    I’m happy you’re getting into carnivorous plants! They are so interesting, but can be challenging at first. The biggest tip I have for pinguiculas is they love to have “wet feet,” which means they prefer to have the tips of their roots always in water. This is true for many other carnivorous plants. They won’t really be happy, in my experience, unless you always keep them in a tray of water about 1-3 inches high. Some people also grow them on porous rocks, but still have that water reservoir. Once you do that, the need for humidity should lower. I know it goes against a lot of houseplant advice, but carnivorous plants are just special :)

      What soil mix do you use on your carnivorous plants?

    • @rhiannonc2884
      @rhiannonc2884 3 года назад

      @@oldcrowhollow I use a mix of about 50/50 peat and perlite. I know peat isn’t very eco friendly, but its pH better aligns with carnivorous plants than coco coir. I’ve also seen people have success with long-fibered sphagnum moss when using the porous rock method.

    Some thrips have a life stage in the soil. I've had a very bad western flower thrips infestation on some of my orchids. I first treated the leaves with a pyrethrin based pestide and the medium with the nematode steinernema feltiae (2x). I then added Neoseiulus (Amblyseius) cucumeris (after the pyrethrins were degraded). They are now free of thrips. Minute pirate bugs are also good in an enclosed space, they feed on the adult thrips. Best approach imo is treating against all stages at the same time.
    Neoseiulus (Amblyseius) Californicus or Phytoseiulus Persimili are excellent against spider mite.

    I'm glad you are excited to grow veggies! I really love my houseplants, and they get me through the winter blues, but my reason for breathing is growing that outdoor garden💚 it's so important that we take back the power the food system has taken from us as consumers, even if it's just a couple of plants tucked away somewhere. Every little bit helps!☺️

    The first infestation of thrips I had, I never even saw a single one! It took so long to figure out what was happening. All I saw were scars and holes being chewed in my leaves and little black dots on the leaves (which I found out is their poop). For weeks these new spots and lines appeared but I never saw a single bug. Luckily I was able to determine it was thrips even without seeing any and treated with bonide systemic granules and captain jack’s dead bug brew spray. Found that combo very effective. Insecticidal soap like the one you use to treat spider mites didn’t work for me with thrips. The little shits are relentless omfg. Saw thrips for the first time during the second outbreak just a few weeks ago and it made my skin crawl 😟 Knowing the damage thrips can cause and the audacity they possess, their appearance and presence in front of my eyes disgusts me lol

    I feel your pain Chickadee..just recently went through the battle w thrips. Still have many plants in quarantine. For the first treatment I gave them all a soap bath soak and changed the soil in all of them/transferred some to water and leca. 70% have not had thrips return...the other 30% are getting blasted w insecticidal soap and again getting new soil. It's been working so far. I haven't seen any thrips for about a week now. I'll wait another few weeks before reintegrating them back in w the other plants. Thanks for the video..it's nice to know that even experienced plant Moms like yourself battle w pests too.

    Spider mites LOVE miniature rose's. Put a miniature rose from the grocery store in your collection. If you have mites they will congregate on it. You can then just toss it out. It's a good indicator of when to treat for mites again.

    I’ve used the Bonide Systemic Houseplant insect control when I had thrips and it worked sooooo well. They went after most of my anthurium and not my hoya. I also sprayed the plants down with alcohol and dawn dish soap spray and let it dried and then sprayed again with Neem.... it’s quite the ordeal!

  • @clairey9414
    @clairey9414 3 года назад

    For your ping - they don't need to be enclosed - you can grow them on a sunny windowsill with lower humidity. They like to be constantly damp with distilled water. That might by why yours is unhappy? I use the tray method with mine so they always have water. Good luck!
    Some also go dormant in winter months where they have smaller non-sticky succulent leaves.

    For thrips, (and most pest) I would repot in fresh soil and add marathon granules. Then spray everyday with half and half of isopropyl alcohol/water mix with 2 drops of dish soap. Continuing spraying for about a week and a half. Works great to rid of thrips on my orchids.

    Ughhh I feel you on your thrips journey, I felt like I was doing a soapy neem treatment every month for all my plants (which gets tiring when you have a small apartment and a non ventilated bathroom lol). But I've been using systemic granules as a preventative measure along with the usual neem treatments and it really has made a significant difference in how often I see a breakout. I use the one by Bonide with the label that specifically says it's for houseplants.

    The Cissus Discolor you will either have to water propagate or use rooting hormone on a cutting in sphagnum or soil.

      Same I took one in that had 4 leaves, and now just a few weeks later it has so many new vines and leaves it’s looking like more than a pot of sticks now! They grow so fast like inches in a day

    I've had an ongoing battle with aphids on some my hoyas over the winter. I kept treating with neem oil, dish soap, and rubbing alcohol repeatedly with no success. I finally unpooted all of them, threw the dirt outside, and left the pots in the snow for a week to let any leftover a**holes out to freeze to death. Then I washed the plants down completely with soap and water and stuck them in prop boxes to quarantine. They were still in there, spray with neem oil and sealed the boxes for 3 days, they were still there. Tried insecticidal soap, sealed again, they were still there. Just got some captain jacks and sprayed on them, sealed up again, checked yesterday, and the little mother f’ers are finally gone!

      The spinosad thing is the only thing that helps when you have a big outbreak. It is also used in biological farming so less unfriendly for nature than the chemical stuff and if you use a lot of bonide and other systemics thrips can get resistent to it . With spiinosad you don't get that resistance so captain jacks is the way to go for nature and your plant.

    Hi my dear! I tried Orchidgirls method I found on you tube, she have 400+ orchids. According to her research mineraloil is lighter than horticulturel oils and evaporate quicker and allovs leafs bread better, bur effective to mosters. Luke water, paraffin, and some dish soap.My velvety leaf plants did great. I hand sprayed some of my plants that I loved most , for the rest of my plants I filled up my sink with the mix, put a bag around the pot and dipped the hole plant 2-3 times. 9 months spider freeeee!!!! Love from Stockholm !!!
