I’m gonna be honest; as a lifelong Transformers fan, I don’t mind any of these mods aside from one: completely gutting his “belt” area. I’m sorry but the removal of so much bulk there looks atrocious to me and it looks like an unfinished figure. G1 cartoon Optimus always had a distinct and wide “belt”, and in terms of his silhouette, G1 Prime’s body started out wide at the top, narrowed slightly in the middle, and widened out at the belt again, effectively creating an hourglass figure, albeit very slightly. With your modification Prime’s body has more of a triangular figure, starting wide at the top and continuously narrowing until you get to his crotch. I apologize for my harsh language, but I frankly cannot see how that modification looks better to anyone.
I honestly think these mods are almost completely pointless cause it defeats the whole point of the figure, it is CLEARLY a homage to the toy, with only a bit of animation model thrown in. Though the articulation mods are nice.
I know that Tommy says that he has a problem with the "silhouette" with the 'belt' attached, but as Transformers fans we easily recognise that the 'belt' is just as necessary in the silhouette as the chest windows or the smoke stacks of Optimus, because it's what makes Optimus as a whole (with a few exceptions of course). (Unless you're the kind of person who prefers the TLK Optimus design, then I could see why you wouldn't like the 'belt')
I understand removing the wheels because it’s not animation accurate and is more a fault of the transformation but removing his whole battle skirt doesn’t work, it makes his legs and body seem to skinny and gets rid of a major design part of g1 Optimus prime which this set is trying to capture
While I agree that a dedicated robot mode would’ve been better, the amount of outcry LEGO would’ve gotten for finally making a Lego transformer that doesn’t transform would’ve been bigger than the outcry we have now
At least we got a figure instead of them doing something like a bust of Optimus Prime's head or a brickheadz of him. Then we would have definitely gotten an outcry.
I'm very happy with this set. Honestly, I get making things more true to the cartoon. However, I feel this model is very true to the actual G1 toy, which for me, is more important.
I’m so glad you started this right off with those two triangle wedges on his posterior. I went back a few I was in the instructions thinking I had done something wrong as I got the exact same result as illustrated. Turns out it’s just a design flaw! Thanks for that one especially!
Thank you so much for featuring my head mod! How ever it shouldn’t effect the transformation since it’s the same size as the original one (just one plate shorter then the original one)
You totally seem to overlook this lego set is a remake of the original toy. not of the screen character. and in my opinion most of these mods take away from this specific look. Also, you talk about it all not being strong, and next thing you take away from this more. maybe the fingers of your model stay on like that but there's a tolerance in the mold fitting and for some people the fingers will fall off when you remove that 1x3 plate from them. And the wedge plates as well as the 3x1 plates make a big part of the integrity of the truck mode. Lego did not get it "completely wrong" because you don't understand what they were going for, or have no insight on why certain things where done the way they were done. It's mods we maybe could do, but really shouldn't.
it's more of a hybrid between g1 toy (the darker blue grey stripe in truck modeand wheel placement), g1 cartoon, yellow crotch plate, jetpack, axe and blue eyes), masterpiece, silver shin vents instead of blue, and rts ledends class optimus ( general transformation and they share the same designer
Bro, if we wants to modify it let hime do it. Theres no rule, sure LEGO has its own purpose, but he continously says that you should do the mods for robot mode. Everyone has their own proferences so let him be.
3:07 NGL, that pose u have Lego Optimus Prime in looks pretty BADASS. Now he looks much better & G1/Cartoon Accurate. I'm not even finished with the video yet, but I just had to point this out real quick.
Another mod I recommend is not for Optimus Prime, but for his Matrix. Swap the Gray and Orange transparent upside-Down 2x2 Dish pieces for Transparent Blue (light blue). Also swap the Gray 2x2 round plate for an orange one. Then you will have an accurate looking Matrix of Leadership
That is the 1 mod my 7 year old made to this set. And the one inside the chest. I wholeheartedly agree with the mod. If only the ax could also be made blue.
I stay G1. His Axe was Orange. Additionally, energon has no distinct color. In G1 (s1) it was white with rainbow-y specks. In animated it was solid pink
@@DeliveryWave Yeah, I tried to explained him that the colour might differ but he was adamant. Well, he just turned 7. Lots to process. He also said he is not building the jetpack that comes with this set because Prime needs no jetpack.
Good mods, but a major one is adding knee joints. It would make the figure more balanced and add some articulation to the legs without affection the truck mode.
Unfortunately I just don’t think this design can be supported with knee joints It’s already really fragile in places so adding extra points of weakness probably won’t let it support itself Besides the ones in the arms already feel too weak so imagine trusting them to hold the weight of the torso
Love this, the replacement bumper/belt buckle fits perfectly above the matrix inside for storage. My main issue is how the whole body comes off when transforming, the bit that connects the top half to the bottom half which is the rotation peice just isn't strong enough.
This was a very polished build, and honestly, if I ever get my hands on this, I am fine with how it looks as it is. When making things with Lego it is very hard to make something that looks very accurate to the real thing.
I cannot personally imagine a Lego kit of Optimus prime being worth it unless he can transform without having to rebuild him. If you had to, he's not much of a transformer! So props to let go for making it happen. I would give up the perfection of robot mode for transformation anytime.
Actually-- the 2 1x3 plates you pull off the free up the fingers can be used to replace the gray wedges on his hips, instead of the shown 2x3 plate. It should work just as well and uses parts that came with the kit, rather than having to get any extra bits. That's what I did.
A mod I have done, is add 1x4 plates under the toes. Since the original model has a slight forward lean, and the plates make his stand more vertical and don’t affect transformation at all.
If you get the speed champions Lamborghini countach and swap out the white for different colors and you can have sideswipe, sunstreaker, red alert and various other characters that use that mold (extra pieces needed for the booster and sirens) sure they won’t transform but you can either have a convey in truck mode or have Optimus doing the “transform and rollout” pose in robot mode
I had already done a red swap out for the Countach before I got the Prime. It's not easy but it actually does scale well with them both now around 1:28 scale. MP10 is actually way too small in truck mode for example.
@@Benjamin0119 yes, the roof piece only comes in white but there is a red one within the straight window edge but a small strip of red PVC tape was an exact colour match.
I have made some small, but significant changes to me. I added some smooth curved pieces at the edges rather than in between the headlights because that would have looked weird to me. I also added some smooth red flat pieces to cover up the white stripe and it looks much better in my opinion.
My concern (I am building my Prime this weekend) is from my Voltron build where after a year of the lego kit being in individual lion modes the black lion started falling apart due to the thing pieces weakening over time. I ended up 3D printing stronger hinges that would stand the test of time better. I'm wondering if this will be an issue on Prime.
Sorry to here that I haven’t got the Optimus yet but I do have the Voltron and it’s been in the combined mode for a year (I only go into the lions just to show people) and it’s been fine so hopefully it’s just bad luck on your part and it won’t happen to the Optimus Prime.
What I did with mine was move the ear fins down by one stud and used a 1x1 clip piece. It makes the ears a little shorter and more accurate to the toys and cartoon.
Just got one for Xmas so I’ll definitely keep some of these in mind especially the waist to stop his cab popping off when posing hopefully when I go to my closest Lego store I can pick and brick(love that pun for a Pick’n’Mix) that 2x4 deep blue tile like you used

Same about the Disney+ shows. I want WandaVision sets. It sucks that all we got from the show were the 3 CMF figures. And I would love Moon Knight sets too

It does look very beetle like the second one looked a whole lot better. The fact remains these are Lego sets. Are any of the mini figs proportionally accurate? 😜😜😜
It's great to work out that Optimus can flip the bird. Very happy with this LEGO set. Got the new Batmobile to build next, which is the crappest of all the Batmobiles (and no mini figures) but I needed it for my Batmobile collection. Do you think a Megatron is coming out soon? That would be very cool.
Question, when you tried transforming him with SleepyCows head, did you turn it around first? I ask cause that's what I did and he transforms fine. :) (thanks for the "heads" up on him by the way, lol).

Moving the shoulder pads like you said and the bit that keeps the fingers together you can actually get him to hold the Matrix by his 1st and 3rd fingers just about with both hands. So may want to extend the fingers out somehow. I am going to look for a blue glow piece to replace the orange one on the Matrix hopefully

Thank you for the video. If you have a mail, I can send you some pics of how I modded my Optimus head only removeing the two 1x1 black pieces that holds the cheeks plates and adding one fairly common brick, not in the set.
On the head issue, could you not just move that flat piece that's below his eyes to be above it? It would move the eyes lower, and still be functional in transformation. I don't have the set to test, but seems like it'd be easier than building a new head to just fix the eyes
No as there's only one point on the head to attach the eyes to, as I discovered when I tried to do what you suggested. The only way to fix the eyes is to do a completely different build.
I have the same problem with the set breaking in two when I moved the legs. I was just curious if modding it the way you showed would affect the transformation or not?

No as there's only one point on the head to attach the eyes to, as I discovered when I tried to do what you suggested. The only way to fix the eyes is to do a completely different build.
those dark blue brackets are in a current production set for $4, the Para-Biddybud Mario ser 4 figure
I wish knee joints were added
I'm really surprised that nobody had released a mod to give the set knees. I've just finished my build and it shouldn't be that difficult.
"5 simp mods" i like it.
can you show a leg build with proper knee joints please
Did you have to purchase a 3x2 dark blue flat brick for that hip mod or is that an extra one? I haven’t finished my build yet.
I just realized: just add the 2 1x3 plates that you got from the hands and put it as the first mod 😮😮😮😮😮
I never even ended up putting the 1x3 play on the fingers
I have the same problem with the set breaking in two when I moved the legs. I was just curious if modding it the way you showed would affect the transformation or not?
Not if you only do the leg mod
Thanks
