I had the good fortune of seeing The Smile in Brussels two weeks ago. I have mixed feelings about the album version of Bending Hectic. Specifically I really dislike the harsh mix in the final chorus. Live, however, it was incredible - absolutely the highlight of the show. This inspired me to try my hand at a piano version.
Naturally the song doesn't immediately lend itself to the piano because the instrumentation is very dense, so this arrangement is kind of its own thing. I hope you like it!
There are some easter eggs in the latter part of the video, to see if anyone actually gets that far 😂
00:59 - First verse - "I'm changing down the gears..."
03:39 - Pre-chorus - "It might be as well..."
03:59 - First chorus - "I've got these slings..."
04:50 - Second verse - "The ground is coming for me now..."
06:00 - Cacophony
06:24 - Last chorus - "Despite these sings..."
That was immensely beautiful.
Thanks as always 🙇♂️
woh... you really arranged that one string part.. for piano... nailed it
Thank you! Took a very loose interpretation there because I didn't want to get too bogged down in trying to recreate an orchestra 😂
Killer work yet again, Alex. I was wondering how you were going to do this one justice and your interpretation is beautiful.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you.
This is impossible! I love it, Alex! Well done! 👏
Thanks so much!
one of the best songs they've ever done, this is an incredible cover
Thanks, I'm very happy with how this one turned out
Maybe you’ve answered this somewhere but what’s your favorite Radiohead song? Also, time permitting, could you possibly go back to old vids like paranoid android and Perth (my two favorite songs of all time) and add visualizer? I love your channel I learned 33 “GOD” bc of your vid
I have had a lot of requests to re-do older videos so I plan to do some eventually, but it's not a priority for me right now as I prefer to work on songs I've never played before.
My favourite Radiohead song changes all the time, but some contenders for me are: Street Spirit, Let Down, Idioteque, Motion Picture Soundtrack, There There, Nude, Reckoner, Weird Fishes, True Love Waits.
thank you so much. i love this song
You're very welcome.
No way! I didn't think you'd be making a cover of this song! I'm glad seeing it live changed your mind on it, I remember it definitely was the highlight of the night when I saw them live as well
And I really like how you adapted the second letting go of the wheel :0 I didn't think this song could be played this well on the piano, this is truly a great arrangement of a beautiful song, keep up the amazing work!
Thanks for the encouragement 🙇🏻♂️
When I saw this in my recommended I was skeptical how one could cover this on piano, and I simply cannot believe how freakin' good this turned out.
Thanks for this comment. I wasn't actually sure if this one was worth trying originally but I was also pleasantly surprised with how well it came together. Very proud of it, one of the ones I actually listen back to myself regularly.
I usually don’t comment on videos but I just want to say how incredible this piece is. Every cover you do is astounding. You are one of my favorite pianists hands down.
Thank you for breaking cover and commenting, I really appreciate the encouragement!
Insane
It’s beautiful can I ask you for sheet music??
Unfortunately I don't use or write sheet music so I have nothing to share.
this might be the best cover you've done!
oh and is the easter egg spinning plates? love it
There's also a tune from Mario 64 right after the Spinning Plates one, but yes!
This is a tough one. Good job. Happy Easter.
Thanks and same to you
What kind of piano do you play on? It sounds very nice
The piano is a Roland RD-88 and the piano sound is called Native Instruments Noire
nice video really hope myxamotosis is next
Not next but soon.
@@aajfranklin cant wait
Weird fishes soon?
Only when it's ready, too good to cover lightly

Based on your two comments so far, you're gonna enjoy my channel 😅
@@aajfranklin Believe me when I tell you that I have been here for years bahaha. I appreciate you!
@@OtaConnor ha, I underestimated you!
Amazing cover.
Cheers!
Phenomenal cover, and fun easter eggs :)
Thanks for watching to the end 😀
What a beautiful cover. Is there a sheet available to purchase?
Can you play these songs years after you’ve recorded them? Do they live in the brain somewhere or are they forgotten if not rehearsed?
Some songs that I worked on for a very long time (like over many years) I can play will with minimal or no rehearsal. But almost all of them need some rehearsal before playing them again well.
@@aajfranklin can you still play 33god?
Absolutely not 😅
@@aajfranklin lol that was your best one. I’m still trying to learn it to this day. Thanks for the midis
A fantastic warm piano adaptation. 👍👍
👍👍
Wow you did an amazing Job Here also on your other covers of this Album. Is there a chance that you will do a Tutorial of one of these songs and your approach on how to Do a piano cover like that? I am a drummer originaly but try to learn more about piano and i am really impressed that you keep the dynamics when you played the same melody with left hand and changed to the right Hand. Must have been a Lot of practice to play it that tight with no audible difference. Keep Up the great work!
Thanks for the kind feedback, glad you like my stuff from Wall of Eyes. I have thought for a while about doing a video where I share my process but I'm not sure what would be valuable to share or what parts of the process to record. Are there any more specific things you'd be interested to know?
Such a pretty song. Especially the very dry part. Dry dry even
I docking love that dry dry part.
Can you do decks darkk
If you look on my channel, you can find my cover from 2016. I didn't have the same set up as I do now so the video isn't great but the audio should hold up.
Beautiful cover 👏
Thank you!
Great Cover!
Thank you!
Amazing
Thank you
7:30 what was the 'familiar' thing you were referring to
I was quoting Like Spinning Plates on that portion, and then Dry Dry Docks from Super Mario 64, both of which share very similar chord progressions to that part of Bending Hectic. Just a bit of fun.
