I just ordered one and I couldn't find any decent reviews of this lens until tonight! Thank you so much for this review. Looking forward to getting the lens in the mail next week!
If you want a better built camera, go for the M2, if you want faster reloading, go for the M4-2. I have both and I prefer my M4-2 since it's faster to load and shoot.
Henry Hwang I tried my best waiting for a good priced M2 to show up on eBay haha. I eventually found a Leica M4 in good condition so I took the risk n bought it from someone in Portugal. It’s about to be 3 weeks since I’ve bought it, shipping is super slow 😂
3:15 perhaps a M5, it also has a very reliable light meter, batteries are not hard to find, feels like a tank and is beautifully quieter that any other M film Leicas ;)
No, unfortunately it will not. The M3 has a different rangefinder magnification. One of the many reasons I like the M2. You could also get a separate viewfinder for the accessory shoe, but you wouldn’t have the rangefinder patch.
I know this is 2 years old, but It actually will "work", if you use the outer edges of the viewfinder, that's pretty much 35mm. You CAN add an external viewfinder. So many people say it "wont work with the m3", 35mm lenses will work with any camera. You just need a work around.
If you're an even cheaper cheapskate like me, you can get a fairly fast lens in the Voigtlander Nokton 40 1.4 for only $49 more. To get the lens to call-up the 35mm frame lines (instead of the 50mm) when mounted on my M6, I gave one of the mount flanges less than 10 swipes with a fine metal file.
I don't own an M5, but apparently it is compatible since M5 users have this lens. (tokyocamerastyle.com/post/132011035801/yamashita-park-yokohama-leica-m5-with-voigtlander) My understanding is the wide angles that have deep recessing elements are the ones that are problematic with the M5. Hope that helps.

I just picked up the first version of this lens. I'm going to pair it with my first Leica, either the M2 or the M4-2. Thanks for the review!

It looks like the usual M2 for me. The M5 is quite odd into it's looks, besides the M1 to M7, otherwise. Its not an M5 here.
got the m2 and the 50mm 3.5 heliar, this would be a great addition, small factor is a plus
Have wanted to try the heliar, but went the the planar.
"Entry level". You killed the sale.
Thanks for your review. Just ordered one.
I’m thinking about picking up the LTM version to go with my iiia.
Is lens hood voigtlander lh6 compatible with this lens?
"Great." What about resolution, lines/millimeter? What about contrast? What about edge sharpness? Nothing here except "great."
7:00 for photo examples.
Just bought one today!
LTM right?
This lens work on M3 without that "frameline glasses"?

+Suntoryjim I had thought about the 40, but the frame lines were always the issue, seems you solved this problem.
Can you pin link to lens shade type

Film Purist that’s the 35mm? Was the 50 there?
Does this work with an M6
+ThaCarti yes
LTM right?
LTM version is available. I use one (with separate viewfinder) on my Barnack iiif.
