If using for a 400watt metal halide, and wiring to 12/3 cable where would the ground wire connect to the fixture?

Do you no where you would find a bulb for that size socket? I have a big lamp with that size socket

We do not carry any bulbs that would fit that. Andrew S. suggests we put one of our "Blinding LED" in the socket and let er rip!

These mogul sockets would be rare in a residential setting, because they are typically used with incandescent lamps between 300 watts and 1500 watts, and with HID lamps (mercury vapor, metal halide & high pressure sodium) larger than 150 watts. There are a few variations of the mogul socket. For open metal halide fixtures an exclusion mogul socket is used, and it is pink in color to identify it as such. This socket is designed in such a way only open rated metal halide lamps will make electrical contact and light up, an enclosed rated lamp will screw in but not light. An open rated metal halide bulb will light up in both open and enclosed rated fixtures. Some floor lamps, particularly the older style reflector type, will have a mogul 3 way socket with a bulb rated 100/200/300 watts, 50/100/150 watt bulbs are also available in the mogul base but are very uncommon.

Hey thanks for the video! Do you know you would attach the ground wire?

@@qdott777 the ground wire would be attached to the metal frame of the lamp or appliance, to provide a low resistance path for current to the source and trip the breaker instead of shocking the user if the insulation on the hot wire wears through and touches the frame. Items with no exposed metal parts do not have this problem, and three prong cords and plugs are not required. Same principle with ceiling light fixtures.
