Thank you, Lord! I took the old socket out so fast that I didn't pay attention to which wire went to which screw on the new socket! Lamplight!

It wasn't there to begin with so I guess the lamp manufacturer did it wrong??

No, but the hot will be side of the socket instead of the bottom of the socket.

How do you change a a 3 terminal socket

On a three terminal socket usually called a two circuit you would be best off looking up a wiring diagram online. I've only ever changed a couple of those and had to Google a diagram each time. Sorry

What happens if you get this backwards? i wired mine but its never turns on a 3-way bulb , but it will turn on a standard bulb on the third click, does that mean i wired backwards (i wired it exactly like the old one i replaced, which was single one).

The only thing that happens if you wire it opposite is that the "hot" is the outer shell and the neutral is the piece at the bottom of the socket. Maybe you have a defective socket or bulb?

    Don't confuse a three-way socket with a three terminal socket.Very different.
