Thanks for your instructional video. I am a 75 year old woman, and used to doing repairs on my own. Your video was most helpful in re-wiring a lamp. I did it with your help. Great job!
Great teaching video. When I first saw that it was a 21 minute video, I was reluctant to watch it but I was very happily surprised. You didn't pet the dog, talk to your kids, complain about the weather, look for a screwdriver or any other irrelevant stuff. You went to work, carefully explaining everything that you did. The 21 minutes just flew by. I learned everything that I wanted to know. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the wonderful video. I've tried a couple of times but missed steps and became frustrated because I did not understand how the things worked. I watched your video, purchased a "broken" Tiffany Lamp at Goodwill, repaired it and you would not believe the beautiful lamp sitting in my living room! And nobody knows my secret!! LOL !! Thank you for being so kind, so patient and for adding this to the community, very very helpful!!
I’m a 70 year old widow and I followed your very clear instructions and fixed my lamp in fifteen minutes! Thanks for your help! Great step by step info especially on how to figure out which was the hot wire.
Mr. fix-it help me change my lamp socket I was going to get new lamp, but thought that I could possibly just changed it. I am 67 years old and was diagnosed with Early onset Alzheimer’s , before I was able to do a lot of projects without even giving it a second thought. I put in sprinklers, re-wired valves, etc. Things they don’t come very easy anymore. Beyond what he probably thought he could do for anybody. Explain step-by-step how to do this, I had to rewind it several times due to my short term memory but my sense of accomplishment , he gave me that feeling again. Just know that you are best thank you so much
I came here to say the same!!! I lucked up and thrifted a pair of lamps for free!! Three trips to the hardware store but it was worth it lol 🤣 in DID l!
Thank you so very much! I am 73 and have 2 lamps that need new switches. Your video will allow me to confidently replace them. I have watched several videos and yours is the most detailed. Thank you!
You should be teaching: right pace, perfect delivery of steps without unnecessary commentary, no frills, camera set in good position with right light and each piece shown in focus. Thank you. 🎉😊
Thank you so very much ESRepair. Your video was excellent and your instructions were very easy to follow. I purchased my 3-way light bulb ($10.97, 22+ year life span) and my 3-way socket turn nob style ($4.97) from Home Depot yesterday; and I watched your video last night and today I performed the "miraculous" with a little help from my friend (SMILE). I am so very happy, again, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
I know this video is 8 years old but I just wanted to thank @ESRepair. I was actually able to fix my lamp by replacing the 3 way switch with a regular one. I had a hard time figuring out which wire was hot and neutral, so I hope I got it right. Anyway, thanks so much! You are a brilliant man!
Thank you for this video. It was clearly explained and helped me repair a table lamp where one of the three settings (low) did not work. My wife hates the higher brightness settings, so she has not been using the lamp much recently. My lamp did not have the lock nut at the bottom of the socket, as it had a screw cap at the base of the bulb, to take the socket apart. Replacing the lamp socket was easy and took less than 10 minutes. Your explanation on the wiring (hot, neutral) was very helpful. Just think, there are local repair facilities here that charge $80.00 to repair a lamp. Thanks for the video and helping me save some money.
This tutorial is STILL helping people! I just fixed my floor lamp switch (a bit more difficult due to how it's constructed) that had burnt out the switch in an ugly mini-explosion. Everyone wanted me to throw the lamp away. Why? Everything is solid except the switch. Your how-to took the fear out of fixing stuff that has to do with electricity. I was very careful to pause the vid and work on mine, pause then work, until I was assured I was doing it exactly as instructed. Voilá, like new again! Thank you for helping to keep the landfills from growing!
thank you! I watched another video and the guy said it didn't matter which wire went where. When it didn't work I watched your video. THANK YOU. I just replace the cord and the socket of my mother's 50 year old floor lamp. My daughter is going to love it.
Mr.Fix-It, thank you for this video. My wife and I watched together. We were informed about the difference between the "Hot" wire which is smooth and the "Neutral" wire, which is rough.. I don't remember ever hearing that before. Thank you, again Mr.Fix-It.
Thank you. The explanation starting at 3:10 about how to remove the lamp socket was especially helpful. I replaced my faulty 3-way socket with a simple push on/off socket.
Thank you! I was able to fix my daughter's monkey lamp and she made me feel like a hero. LOL. I never knew there was a hot and neutral wire or how to distinguish the two. I now know. You're the best!!
I just needed this video badly, I didn't want to throw away my table lamp...And your video helped me fix it all on my own, I'm a disabled 5oyr old women...Thank you so very much.
best '' how to '' replace a table lamp socket video out there ! i replaced mine with your instructions and it works ! now i don't have 2 throw it away .. thank you
I like the detail this video provides. Very thorough with attention to how to correctly install the new socket so that it is safe. If the hot and neutral wires are crossed, this can lead to a dangerous lamp and Mr. Fix-it explains very well how to recognize the difference between the hot and neutral wires.
Hello Mr. Fix-It! Thanks so much for helping me get the little cup base of the old socket. Secondly, I knew that one wire was smooth and one was rough, but I didn’t know which was which or which went to silver and which went to brass, so that was helpful. Finally, it might sound silly, but your “tighty righty lefty loosey” rhyme is going to help me for the rest of my life. (My dad left when I was 6, so I never learned that stuff.)
I just wanted to tell you that I feel so happy that I came across this footage!!! I have this beautiful lamp that broke..I found out it was the socket and the part that turns the light on & off...I was so upset because I thought I was going to have to throw it out..Found out differently thanks to you!! My lamp now works perfectly...I'll be tuning in for more fix its.. Keep up the great work
I really enjoyed this video - it was very well done, easy to understand, Mr. Fixit is a great teacher ad speaker. Thank you! I fixed my lamp thanks to you!I will be looking for more of your videos.
Wow, replace a lamp socket 101!. So easy to follow and understand.. My cord had a knot in it, which made it very difficult to replace the socket. I untied the knot and it slipped right on. I noticed the comment below about an underwriters knot. What the heck....repaired without much easier. Thank you again, Mr. Fixit!
Thank you for the step-by-step instructions done in real time. I know nothing about electrical devices, but I'm certain I can change out a lamp socket. (A few hours later) Good news! I was able to successfully change out the lamp socket. Keep in mind: I have NEVER done anything with electrical devices but I just did. Thank you so much.
I just want to say Thank you for helping me rewire two lamps for my parents! I’m a Plumber by trade and always stayed away from anything electrical until today! Tremendous help to a guy that gets wet for a living! Lol
Excellent video!! Just replaced an old harp that wouldnt fit with a new one from Amazon. Bless you! When I saw the 20+ minute runtime I said "Oh no! Someone that's going to talk in circles," but everything you said was at least a tip or good info to make sure the job was completed correctly. Great video! Saved in my Home Economics playlist. Hehehe.
Thank you for your video! I found two beautiful lamps in the trash and they didn't work. Bought sockets, watched this video as I went, made some mistakes, and a few hours later, they both work! I will say my lamps wires were in a plastic base thing and you need to use a paperclip to dislodge the wire. My bases didn't pop off. They are not perfect but I am proud of myself.
Thank you for reassuring me about the two wires that I was afraid to connect. Now I will remember which is which. i was able to save a favorite lamp thanks to you.
Dear Mr. Fixit. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I bought a beautiful lamp at the thrift store and quickly the mechanism quit working. Now, finally after several years, its working! Under $5. I'm sure this lamp was once over $100
Another Great Video Leah. I have a floor lamp I'm putting a light socket in, that takes a 3 way bulb, I looked through my socket bag and found one but it had 3 screws with a black screw and two silver screws. I looked in where the bulb goes, and saw it had the two contacts, but wasn't sure where to hook my 2 lamp cord wires. I do know, that the wide terminal on the PLUG IN is the Neutral wire. So hooked one wire to a sliver screw, the other wire to black screw, then screwed in a 3 way bulb, turned it on and my shop lights almost went out before I turned the switch off. So I surmised that this socket with 3 screws, must be for the Lamps with other bulbs hooked to the switch. So I looked through my socket bag again and found a socket with only 2 screws, but still had the extra contact where the bulb goes in. So tomorrow I will put this socket in the lamp and see if it works with the 3 way bulb. I'm not an electrician per say, but the socket with the 3 screws steered me to RUclips to see what the difference is with the two 3 way sockets. I'm still a little perplexed though by the 3 screws socket. Thanks for the Video.
Your a great teacher! Your step by step explanation is perfect for newbies like me who have never done this. My son bought me a beautiful lamp at a thrift store but, they didn't have a bulb to test it. So just in case the 3way bulb I am about to buy doesn't work, I will move to this step changing the socket. Thank you!
Great video! I hadn't done this task in decades, so Mr. FixIt gave me all the info. I needed to accomplish this! Easy to follow, and good explanations!
Extremely helpful instructions. I was able to repair one of my favorite lamps. Had already bought a replacement which didn't measure up. So I decided to try to replace the socket. It's not that complicated once you know how its done and you made my day.... Thank you!!
At 9:10 that was exactly what I needed to know! Bought a rewiring kit from Lowe's today and of course they don't tell you what wire is hot and what's not. You'd think they'd make black for hot and white for neutral. Thank you!
Thanks! I like it that you speak slowly so we can more easily hear and see what you are talking about. Constructive criticism: please don't edit / skip forward, ex.: when the socket didn't twist off by hand, you mentioned that you can loosen it with a screwdriver ... but edited out your doing so. I'd have appreciated it if you recorded your doing so. Again, keep up the good work!
I just want to say thank you so much for the video very informative reassured me I was doing The repair correctly. Information is the most sought after commodity in this world. Thank you so much greatly greatly appreciated.
YAY ! I did it too on my own! with your help! following your instructions step by step I even skinned the wires that were too short , wow THANK YOU! So proud of myself you'd think I won the Nobel prize hahaha😆
Thank you so much. Although I didn't need to replace the socket just yet, but it helped to ensure that the connection was together. Was really easy to follow your instruction.
😅 I actually had the patience to do this! The hardest part of my job was trying to feed the cord throw the base from the bottom to the tiny hole on top ugh. After that I got it! Thanks ☺️
Very thorough video. One of the other videos here was replacing the innards of the socket and reusing the old cardboard insulator and casing. This makes more sense. BTW, when you disconnect the old socket, you can use a Sharpie or something to mark the hot wire, and just duplicate the hookup on the new socket. It’s good to know the way to identify which is which (especially of you have to cut the cord), but common sense is a good thing as well. Speaking of which, when my husband was still just my roommate he started “repairing” a lamp with out unplugging it! He touched a screwdriver to a wire and BOOM! I said something like (gritting my teeth), “Why did you not unplug it?”, and he said it was turned off so the flow of electricity should have been cut. Um....yep. I married him anyway. He’s smarter now. :-/
QUESTION: I dropped a lamp I like very much from the 1990s that is touch sensitive with three levels of brightness. Originally, the bulb would screw in 100% of the way until it stopped and was very firm. The bulb did not wiggle or wobble at all after being screwed in. However, after being dropped, the bulb screws in about 99% of the way and "almost" feels firm. However, the bulb never screws in 100% of the way now. The bulb will always continue to rotate. Once this point of 99% has been reached, the bulb wiggles and wobbles back and form. The bulb does still work, and the lamp still turns on and off with three different levels of brightness. But, I'm concerned there would be a potential electrical problem or fire problem if the lamp has a wiggly bulb plugged in like that. What are your thoughts? Is this lamp safe to use in such a way? And also is this something that can be repaired? It looks like there are places online far from my home that repair lamps. But, touch sensitive lamps like this have not been common for a long time. Any help would be appreciated.
I needed to figure out how to tell which was the hot wire that connects to the copper terminal (it's been a couple decades since electronics class in high school. Do they even have trade classes in HS anymore?). Thanks for the quick tutorial.
I knew the lamp in my living room was a 3 way, I didn’t know what that type was called, and one day it only turned on and off, when I asked my mom about it she said it was always like that. So it tripped me out a little bit, thanks for the video, fixing the THREE way lamp tonight
thank you! this helped me fix a 15 year old lamp! mine had the two sharp teeth that punch into the wire at the end, not screw terminals. i just yanked it out, snipped the wire to give it some fresh wire to bite into, and it worked!
Thanks for your instructional video. I am a 75 year old woman, and used to doing repairs on my own. Your video was most helpful in re-wiring a lamp. I did it with your help. Great job!

Thank you so much for demonstrating slowly and so detailed for I am a senior woman and needed to be shown that way. Now my lamp works. :)
Same here! Excellent explanations.
Your video is the only one that shows how to id the cord's to hook it up! Good job and thanks for the help!!

Thank you very much for taking the time make a simple, comprehensive, visual manual. Keep up the great work!

I am now going to try and fix my two living room lamps. They have been sitting on the tables broken for way too long!! Thanks!!
Very helpful and not intimidating. Cost saving and there are few places to have a lamp repaired these days. Thank you. Brie

Very clear and precise instructions. I just replaced my first lamp socket thanks to Mr. Fixit. Thanks so much!
Great video! I hadn't done this task in decades, so Mr. FixIt gave me all the info. I needed to accomplish this! Easy to follow, and good explanations!
You covered some topics that other videos did not such as the hot wire and using the wrench to stabilize the lamp infrastructure. Thank you!!
Yea but my cords both are smooth so I'm concerned
Extremely helpful instructions. I was able to repair one of my favorite lamps. Had already bought a replacement which didn't measure up. So I decided to try to replace the socket. It's not that complicated once you know how its done and you made my day.... Thank you!!
Dude!! You not only showed how to do it, you provided some great info. Thank you so much!
At 9:10 that was exactly what I needed to know! Bought a rewiring kit from Lowe's today and of course they don't
tell you what wire is hot and what's not.
Thank you for explaining how to do this in an easy to understand manner. I've never fixed a lamp and did it without any issues.
Thanks! With your help I put a new socket in my grandfather's desk lamp.
Thanks Mr. Fixit. Straightforward simple and effective video
Found your video.....thank you so much....you made it easy...best wishes
Bravo! I am about to replace the socket on an old MCM stiffer table lamp and you just taught me how! Thanks 😊
thanks for the detailed description. trying to salvage a deserted lamp with very classy appearance.
I just want to say thank you so much for the video very informative reassured me I was doing The repair correctly. Information is the most sought after commodity in this world. Thank you so much greatly greatly appreciated.
Excellent detailed demonstration of the task. Thank you so much Mr. Fix It!
Most welcome!
Thank you! Very good instructional video. :)
I found this really informative and helpful. You somehow provided a huge level of detail in a clear & concise manner. Thank you!
YAY ! I did it too on my own! with your help! following your instructions step by step I even skinned the wires that were too short , wow THANK YOU! So proud of myself you'd think I won the Nobel prize hahaha😆
Glad it helped!
Love this video, was about to replace lamp, now just have to replace socket. Thank you.
Finally! A video for this repair that actually helped me! Thank you so much.
Thanks for the tutorial. My wife is happy and that means I am happy :-)
Thank you Mr. Fix it. I'm on my way to Home Depot to get thel socket to fix my lamp. Thank you.
This was a great tutorial. Thank you so much, Mr Fixit. I am going to replace a lamp socket today.
Nice, careful video. I've got a few lamps to fix, and now I'll do it this afternoon. Thanks!
Exceolent video. Especially liked the explanation of which wire is hot and which is the ground.
Thank you! I just fixed my lamp that I haven't used in years.
I'm going to try to repair mine, too!!
@@marlenecannon4142 it's super easy 🙂 Good luck!
Excellent in many ways! I think I love you as a really good friend who actually taught me instread of trying to make me look stupid. Best to the best!
I'm glad that I can fix my lamp now. Thank you Mr Fixit.
thank you for taking the time to make this video, very kind of of you. Excellent walkthrough and I love the tips you dropped in here and there.
Thank you so much. I use this tutorial every time I have to change the switch in a lamp.
Thank you so much! I can't believe that I was able to repair my lamps myself!!
nice video--I like how you explain hot vs the ground wires--textured side vs smooth
What happens if they're both smooth??
Clear and simple instructions. Just what I needed. Thanks!!
Good as new. Followed your instructions to a t and I got my lamp back. Thank you kindly.
Thank you for the excellent step by step instructions.
Thanks for the video. Getting ready to change my first cord on a vintage lamp.

You are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed to see to replace the socket on my lamp😊
thank you! this helped me fix a 15 year old lamp! mine had the two sharp teeth that punch into the wire at the end, not screw terminals. i just yanked it out, snipped the wire to give it some fresh wire to bite into, and it worked!
Thank you for the video. I just changed mine after taking it out of the trash! 🙂 Works like new.
Thanks 😊
Your video helps me a lot… I replaced it and I didn’t have to buy a new lamp… yeah!!!
