Witnesses told investigators that Robert Odegaard looked “sharp” and “crisp” flying his airshow routine in a Sept. 7, 2012, practice over Valley City, N.D.
Then, for reasons unknown, he added a figure, what appeared to be a barrel roll that was not in the script. This maneuver began a few hundred feet off the ground and reached only about 1,000 feet at the top, witnesses estimated. The roll stopped with the airplane inverted, and then the nose of Odegaard’s Super Corsair pitched down. Vapor trails appeared from the wingtips as the dive progressed, Odegaard apparently trying to pull out, the nose approaching and nearly reaching the horizon by the time the vintage warbird slammed into the ground and shattered.
Investigators found no cause for the accident beyond an aerobatic maneuver that began too low.
