I remember going dress shirt shopping with my dad back in the early 70s as a young girl. I saw Winchester shirts made by Arrow and thought they were gorgeous. I tried and tried to get my dad to get one but alas he never did 😔
I work in menswear and our company tailor uses ex-MTM white collar and cuff samples to "upcycle" his casual check shirts into Winchesters. He has made both spread and cutaway styles and they look terrific! GG viewers may want to ask their tailors to do the same for their old/worn shirts for a more sustainable option rather than buying new. Great video team!
I have been looking at Winchester shirts and was searching for a guide to the last night, literally what are the odds haha. The gentleman to the rescue yet again!
I really like Raphael’s brown combination. One of my favourite outfits actually looks quite the same (detachable club collar, blue striped body shirt, dark brown jacket and waistcoat, tobacco brown trousers).
I love Winchester shirts and I have quite a couple of them. I used to wear both white collar and cuffs, my shirtmaker pointed out, that the ones with white collar only can also be worn without a jacket, whereas white collar and cuffs will look too "loud" without a jacket.
I live in a tropical climate in SE Asia, so it's rare for me to wear a tie. However, most of my shirts are Winchesters, point collar, hidden button-down, convertible cuffs. I'm also fortunate living in SE Asia that tailors are affordable so all my shirts are made with me going into the shop, picking a fabric, and getting a shirt made from it. I'm sure I wear them more casually than you would prefer, but I like the subtle uniqueness of the style--I don't see that many other Winchester shirts over here.
I like Winchesters. Light blue with white stripes, and solid yellow, are my two favourite classics. The solid yellow is great with semi formal morning attire.
I thaught these were bespoke where you had returned to the maker to repair them when the cuffs etc had warn out. AS the material would have run out, white was used. So a sign of a humbler man
I'll be on the lookout for Winchester shirts from now on. I've been so sick & tired of the "same old-same old" of men's shirts, that I've been learning to sew! So far I've made four hawaiian type shirts. (They're easier) They are super casual using print fabric, but ALL have a solid contrasting collar. It really sets 'em off. Never noticed that contrasting collars were "a thing". I thought I'd come up with something new.
Man, I love Winchester shirts. Been wanting to get my hands on one for awhile now. Personally, I think Winchester shirts would go better with a stroller than with full morning dress. I've found a stroller is better suited for lighter, and more festive occasions where the coloured shirt body would make the whole outfit pop. I think I'll be sticking with a white shirt for full morning dress regardless of the occasion to respect the formality of the outfit. Regardless, I love your guys' content and Preston's style - never fails to make me smile :)
A Couple of years ago I ordered a Winchester shirt from my shirtmaker. Blue. green, white mini stripe with the white collar and cuffs. Good looking shirt. I find myself wearing my suits without a tie more these days (extra focus on the pocket square) and I don't wear the Winchester shirt as often as i should. Seems like it just goes better with a tie. Hopefully this video will get me wearing it more often.
Striped shirts with a club collar were very popular amongst the working-class in Britain during the 1910's and 20's. The stripes often hid the fact that the shirt had not been dry cleaned, which was too expensive for most working men of that era.
I hate to be the guy correcting grammar, but there's a big difference between striped and stripped! One happens on a shirt, the other happens at a certain type of club.
Hello, Preston. What's happening? We have sort of a problem here. Yeaahhh, you apparently forgot to include any references to Bill Lumbergh from "Office Space." Did you see the movie? Yeaahhh, if you could just go ahead and make sure you do that from now on, that would be great.
I’m strongly considering getting Winchester collar shirts for one reason. The movie office space since the character Bill Limbergh usually wore Winchester collar shirts
I would also like to recommend another above-decent Japanese brand called "Kamakura Shirts" that also sells Winchester shirts in both twill and travelling stretch fabric at the 100$ range with wide and slim fit sizes !!! I was introduced to the brand by The Kavelier btw
I've had two shirts made for me by Maximilian Mogg - both are Winchester shirts. It's a subtle way to up your menswear game without being too flashy: People react to your outfit positively, but most of them can't tell you why.
Great episode! I have many Winchester shirts. But its almost impossible to find any in a pale green! Especially for under $100.00 Edit: I just realized I am wearing a Winchester shirt in my profile picture!)
I love that a shirt with such a British name and history has it's beginning in the USA. I do like how they look with a jacket, but I find them a little odd when worn with no jacket. I want one now just because of their firearm connection. I guess game night is going to be topless now. *gasp!*
Can you dress down a Winchester shirt? I know you can dress down a dress shirt(to a point) for things like Smart Casual and Business Casual. Is the Winchester shirt too formal for this, or can you wear it with knit wear, like a sweater at home. Maybe a knit tie and a sport coat if you're going out, or even forgo the tie if you're with friends
In the Ivy League clothier world, never heard the term "Winchester". Usually either two tone or contrast collar. Brooks had beautiful Sea Island ones in the 80s.
I have learned something! I assumed that Winchester was to do with either the Duke of Winchester or the town of Winchester in southern England. I had no idea it was an American invention! I’ve never been entirely taken with Winchester shirts; I think they can look a bit odd, but I might reconsider based on this.
While there is a Duke of Winchester, I wonder if you're getting confused with the Duke of Windsor, Brother to King George VI and a famous fashion icon in the mid 20th Century
Thank you for your video. I do have a couple of "commentions". I see many "how to" videos and articles but nothing as a list of places where you can buy contrast collar shirts. AND, if they recommend a place, the shirt is in the 60's 70's US Dollars. I have seen some for about 100-300. I do not know who has that kind of money in this economy. Do you have some input regarding this two parts point?
Okay, the Godzilla moment was FUNNY!! lol. I don't think I've ever seen Preston incorporate wacky humor into any of his videos. That was nice change up. I wish these Winchester shirts could be worn with v-necks sweaters,..but, I'm not seeing it. Cheers.
Winchester shirts look best with suits that really could do with more colour. For instance a dark coloured charcoal suit could really do with a winchester shirt, that brings interest to the outfit. White would look too plain in the body.
Seeing as this style was invented in the US, was it worn at all in europe in the past and today? I'd be interested to know how it was introduced to other regions.
I have one hugo boss light blue wincheste shirt bought from Nordstrom. I really wanna buy more, but it is really quite difficult to find these in department store. I think it would be better to just go for custom made.
One issue with the usefulness of the wing collared Winchester shirt - at "official" events in the UK that require morning dress (I.e. events like the Royal Ascot), wing collars are no longer a valid component of the dress code (along with cravats), so you will only get use out of this kind of shirt at less "official" formal daytime events.
It's worth noting that formal ascots and wing tips are still worn in the UK for particularly formal weddings. The wing tip collar and formal ascot were removed from the Royal Ascot Derby's dress code, partially because the derby is a more casual event, but primarily, at least in my opinion, because all the people showing up who opted for ascots were wearing pink satin pre-tied ascots that just looked awful, and so few people were wearing nice ascots that they just did away with the allowance.
I incorporated Winchester shirts into my wardrobe starting in 2007 with none other than Donald J. Trump line of clothing. They provided an excellent array of business patterns with button or french cuff sleeves.
I remember finding a satin black self-tie bow tie at a thrift store from the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection for $0.99. I'm telling you, if Trump himself wore and altered clothing from his own line, he'd look quite stylish.
Winchester shirt while a fun looking item is hard to pull off I think. The only situations I can see you wearing it is with blazers, suits and that's about it. Because if you think about it, the Winchester shirt is a fairly formal piece.
Prince Charles in those photos and slot of the royal family is going for the classic detachable collar, although is is the same look does it count or to be a Winchester does it have to be attached?
