When I was in, junior high, I think, the library had a book on pop art. I looked at it, but didn't really understand what the idea was. As an adult, I have seen various Lichenstein prints, e.g. post cards and such. I admit on a simplistic level, I just like the style, the dots, and the melodramatic emotional style. I don't know what it means, but I can see the appeal. I was reminded of all this today, when I saw a Swatch, with a Lichenstein design ( Swatch has a number of art watches now, all very interesting IMO.)

I feel really lucky to stumble upon this hidden gem, I like to paint when I was young, being an amateurish painter with mediocre talent I do not have much interest in art history.
Your lessons are invaluable, the content are both informative and entertaining, invigorating, thank you very much for revitalising my interest in art.

Thank you for your kind words! If you enjoy the process, keep making art and don't worry about the result and don't be so hard on yourself, I am sure you do not deserve it.

I am sick of so called "art critics" continually describing the source material from the comics which Lichtenstein plagiarised as "banal and cliched". Those words have become synonymous with the comic book images, and I wonder if these critics are even thinking about what they are actually saying, or just reading from the Lichtenstein Foundation notes. The artists whose work he stole, such as John Romita and Tony Abruzzo, were infinitely more talented than Lichtenstein. They drew beautiful, well composed images which is the very reason he stole them.

I remember walking through LACMA some years ago, and I expected to see art I didn't understand. And I was not disappointed by a painting on the wall, which was simply black paint. No textures, no change in color...100% black. I was telling my friend about this one day, and he suggested the "art" was the viewers response to the painting, which made sense. With this in mind, I don't take art too seriously, but I would not call something cliched and banal without a really good reason for it. Millions of people enjoy comic books and graphic novels, I don't see the point in putting down that style. Heck, might be more people enjoy comic book art, then the stuff hanging on the walls of museums. Personally, dutch seascapes top my list of paintings I enjoy.

@@michaelbauers8800 A lot of people seem to enjoy photo-realistic paintings and think they are more deserving of being in galleries than a plain black canvas. I would argue that photo-realism - despite its technical merit - is the ultimate in banality.
