I'm a little surprised he was able to apply for a Russian visa without US officials knowing. If you have a security clearance you're also required to report contact with foreign nationals. I hope he will return safely but I find it hard to avoid feeling like he brought this on himself.

He didn't have any of that because he would have never been approved. I think he may have just boarded a ferry to Vladivostok and was immediately stopped when he entered customs at the port.

I traveled to Russia while on active duty many years ago. I went to the S-2 shop before going and asked what the parameters were at the time. They gave only advice not to go. I asked whether they would revoke my security clearance if I went to Russia, they said "no." I sent my travel passport to the Russian Embassy for a tourist visa and I let my S2 and command know about it. The visa was approved, I registered my trip with the US Embassy STEP program. When I went on leave, my command wished me a good trip and that was it.

It costs over $800 for a round trip ticket from Seoul to Vladivostok. He allegedly stole $100. So the cost of his ticket and the theft make no sense.

The Russian woman likely wasn't a spy. A Staff Sergeant doesn't have enough intel to use resources to try to catch him in some concocted scheme to argue with him only to return back to Russia to trap him in case he follows.

You can but certain places may require approval or can be outright restricted. Before you finalize plans you will need to check with the unit security office and follow their guidance which would come from a higher level advisory. Russia??? I would have laughed and said “sorry, not happening”.

My last duty position before retiring from the military was security manager, which included helping folks with and advising them on travel. Plenty of servicemen and women do it smart, advise the right people, and follow the directions they are given. This guy…😑
