Yes, of course!
So beautyful, so dark, so heartbreaking sad. Gives me goosbumps in the brain. One of their best songs, ever. Maybe The best version I’ve ever heard. Thank you so very much for posting this. Seen it at least 20 times in a row now.
Hey if you haven’t heard, I suggest you listen to the Live in Sydney 1981 version of this. I think it’s the best version, it sounds really eerie and haunting.
What can I say? My skin still shivers 25 years later, when I listen to it again... a pure essence of the Romantic age, forlorn... echoing in the emptiness of past...
@@USMCLP yes... definitely... I just melt... I can't listen to it much tbh though... I become an emotional mess and just wan to cry my eyes out 🤪 It's a mind-blowingly gorgeous song that is also my own personal emotional torture instrument 🙈 I do love it though
'Drowns her at its ease' are the beautiful words of Mervyn Peake from the Gormenghast novels, where Fushia Groan accidentally drowns in the second book. This song is all about that. I read the books as a teenager, and then many years later finally realised I heard 'Fushia' in the song, and then realised the connection.
Danny Summers that trilogy takes a lot of patience, but it's really well written. You start with Titus Groan, then Gormenghast, then Titus Alone. Robert sort of fell in love with the character Fuchsia, and he says he cries when he reads about her death. If you actually get through the books, I hope you enjoy them! A lot of Robert Smith's lyrics are based off of books, and they tend to be good ones!
Mark Harris I listened to my first cure album at 13 and it was the drowning man that stood out for many yrs I thought Robert Smith took it from life then the color fuchsia I thank you so much 2o yrs or more I found out that answer I have to read it....
I havent read the book yet, but yes I know the reference. Should read it. I love Robert for that reason. Though he had the punk thing going on, he had literal references, instead of lashing out on the system like everyone else. Or whining about politics. They became more interesting in that way.
Mark Harris seems Roberts a bit of a book worm writing songs from numerous books. Such a talented artist. I’ve been listening to the cure for 35 years! Bless you Mark
The guitar trickles around a long bass descent to an endless abyss. The constant repetition of the melody leads you to a soft melancholia, there is no escape, no break, no chorus.
One of my fav track of them when performed live, it gets another dimension, more atmospheric, less intimate, not the same guitar sound...Real top cold wave material, immortal classic ... enjoyed it a lot, thanks for the post !
I do love Pornography, but I feel that it has overshadowed the wondeful Faith and Seventeen Seconds albums (which are quite different, but just as excellent).
I personally think pornography is one of Roberts less inspirational moments. I have listen to the cure every day for the last 35 years!!! Ha.. that makes me old! 😆
I sympathize with both of you...this version is beyond monumental. To hear this live, crushing, raw...in the days when this song was birthed....it’s unbelievable.hearing it now, I’m taken back.
I was 11yrsold when I first heard the cure this one is dedicated too the losses I believe almost turned my heart cold thank you the cure so many good memories
And to think... it's only a mere book report based on The Gormenghast Novels by Mervyn Peake. The character Fuchsia resounded with Robert. She left him breathing like the drowning man.
If I was deprived of all of my senses except for my hearing in a dark topological manifold and I was given my choice of the entire discography of one band it would be the Cure.
this is clearly 1 of my favorites within all the other favorites that the cure do, but i wander. i felt deeper into the song once i learned how to play it on bass, i actually felt myself in a sense of a continuance of drowning- it just left me lifeless, hopelessly dreaming, breathing like the drowning man...
There are a lot of different songs, that are outstanding emotionally, but this one always kicks me out of every thinkable situation... truth itself always wins...
i love this song..., it's so profound, i grew up listing The Cure and always will be in my heart n mind, thanks theres amazing music in this mediatic world...
I'll be seeing them September 26th FINALLY!!! First time in Montreal in over 10 years and if they're playing songs from what is arguably my favorite period of theirs, it's going to be an awesome show.
lets see when i heard this was back in the early 80's and to hear it like 30 years later and with porl back it is like a dream what a trip the cure rules the universe lol!! :P
i was there in hungary, szeged. i cried because a dream came true-i never heard this song live in front of the band, before... very emotional song from the ancient year of 1981.... simon was on his knees during this song...

Probably the best Cure Song, for me
One of the darkest for sure
Yes, of course!
Yes...
So...
Definitely one of the best.
It’s the only song in the world that, every time I listen, makes me shudder and raise the hair on my arms...
So beautyful, so dark, so heartbreaking sad. Gives me goosbumps in the brain. One of their best songs, ever. Maybe The best version I’ve ever heard. Thank you so very much for posting this. Seen it at least 20 times in a row now.
Ja, jaja, cool. Pienso lo mismo. Es un version magnífica. Tan lle
na DE.MATICES.SALUD.
❤️❤️
The Drowning Man is The Cure at their finest!
I Never get tired of this track and it STILL
moves me tremendously.
This version is absolutely brilliant. Intense and deep, despite Robert's age. Indeed his age doesn't seem to matter, does it?
Considering the song lyrics, I would say that his age matters even more. I would say his age is what makes this version so good.
Man , its still doesn’t
How mano bands could dov the same??,
This song will haunt me forever 💖

this song was recorded in 2005, szeged, hungary. i was there, and i cried.
My favourite Cure song...
Me too.
What can I say? My skin still shivers 25 years later, when I listen to it again... a pure essence of the Romantic age, forlorn... echoing in the emptiness of past...
Or the emptiness of the present!!!
Best live version of this song!!!
That's your opinion ;-)
PPTTCureboy which would you recommend? I'll give it a listen!
@Smoking Poetry Sydney Live 1981 is by far the best version. Very eerie and raw.
@@USMCLP yes... definitely... I just melt... I can't listen to it much tbh though... I become an emotional mess and just wan to cry my eyes out 🤪

Mark Harris that is amazing I waited many yrs to find out the purpose for this haunting song and now I can read it as well

What an amazing performance of one of their finest songs! Robert's use of guitar effects is stunning! It's even more haunting than the album version.
In my mind this has always been the best cure song...This and siamese twins...
I wrote the lyrics to Siamese Twins on my bedroom wall in high school...I may do that again.
The Cure are timeless... defying catagorization. "Drowning Man" nails it for any of us who have struggled with alcohol or drugs.
The guitar trickles around a long bass descent to an endless abyss. The constant repetition of the melody leads you to a soft melancholia, there is no escape, no break, no chorus.
My funeral song. Their best.
smith is never embarassing and he doesn't grate...don't tell stupid things...he's 50 yo and his voice is still one of the bests!
The feeling is so intense !
simply AWESOME the best singer ever..........
Amazing live version, thank you
This song is incredible, this album is incredible. This sound is the "CURE" sound. No one else could have invented it.

The best track from one of the best albums ever recorded. Simply wonderful, thank you for posting this.
I was 11yrsold when I first heard the cure this one is dedicated too the losses I believe almost turned my heart cold thank you the cure so many good memories
Heh, this song was from the period when they really earned their reputation of being a depressing band, before they went all jolly-sounding. Love it.
Such a great song...Really gets me into the cure again.
I love this song, it's impressive!!! One of my favourite!
who else could voice things like this...one can never be the same after this...
And to think... it's only a mere book report based on The Gormenghast Novels by Mervyn Peake. The character Fuchsia resounded with Robert. She left him breathing like the drowning man.
I do agree it's one of the most beautiful songs in the world. I wish it all was true. I wish it could have been a story.
this song shivers me for almost ten years
I've never met anyone who hates The Cure.
Big Mclargehuge many there are, but we love them especially in their dark tunes.
Morrissey hates them...
+Big Mclargehuge you should have been a fan before the ´ head on the door´ album then hahah
+vincent c. insomnicide :I hate Morrissey
Morrissey is nothing compared to the talent of Robert smith and I am a smiths fan aswell
great song💌thank you so much the Cure
Second listen I can't get enough
oh wow. I feel it
***** díky :)
Shivers my spine. Bobs voice clings to the ears. Genius at such age...
If I was deprived of all of my senses except for my hearing in a dark topological manifold and I was given my choice of the entire discography of one band it would be the Cure.
Bellissima ❤❤❤❤❤

One of The Best song even written all over the world
Reminds me of writhing naked on my bed with my first 'true love'.... Always found it tragically romantic & sexy!
this is clearly 1 of my favorites within all the other favorites that the cure do, but i wander. i felt deeper into the song once i learned how to play it on bass, i actually felt myself in a sense of a continuance of drowning- it just left me lifeless, hopelessly dreaming, breathing like the drowning man...
