Thanks Charlie Baker, glad you enjoyed the video. There have been occasions (not many) since we opened when there have been 2 or 3 aircraft here at once.
@@elliot7753 Not really. It's normal procedure when you want to cool down your landing gear quicker, for example when you're planning on doing quite a few short landings in a row, especially on a hot day. Yes, you'll get performance penalty, and yeah you'll burn quite a bit more fuel, but they're not really going anywhere and overheating brakes are a lot bigger concern here.
Dankie/ Merci Saints for this video. I watch it 2x. I thought it was possible for 3 000m runway. I will be in a cross to Runway 20. Now I see, with St. Helena in the back-round. I will be very very expensive job. Too expensive, BUT not impossible....
Thanks for the comment David. At the end of the day most things like this boil down to funds. In hindsight, a tiny bit more length on the runway would probably have made all the difference and travel from here would have been a lot more affordable. Glad you liked the video. Cheers
We obviously don't get many aircraft, even before all the 2020 disruptions, so just hearing jet engines is quite a thrilling novelty here on the island :)
Hi Angelo, the Titan Airways flights (in this video) operated for two years, 2020-2022, during Covid-19 isolation. Since March 2022 the island is once again served by a regular, weekly flight (Saturdays) from Johannesburg, South Africa, by Airlink. You book tickets via the Airlink website. And for holiday accommodation on the island, see: travelsthelena.com/
British and St Helena government - our normal weekly flight from South Africa has been suspended since 21 March 2020, due to lockdown in SA. This was the second charter from UK since that time. Since this 757 flight, four more charter flights have been announced between now and January 2021. It's the only way on or off the island at the moment and it still seems some way off before SA lockdown is lifted to allow flights in.
I would love to go. It all seems so beautiful and serene there. Would love for my kids to grow up in a place like St Helena. Who knows I might one day get the chance.
Thanks for the commetn, JdeMunter 👍 Sometimes when we look at the turmoil in the news, from other places, it does make us appreciate the peacefulness of St Helena even more. Hope you do manage to make a visit one day. If you do begin to plan, then check out Travel St Helena for holiday accommodation options: travelsthelena.com/ Cheers 😊
Just read the blog and watched the footage. Very interesting and well documented. Also making your island more interesting and keen to visit. I think the B757 is the perfect plane for St. Helena airport for tos landing, take off performance, payload and range. The load factor will be the main decision on this. Will keep watching.
It is rather magnificent Anthony, as you say. Living here it's easy to become used to. However, when we travel abroad for a bit and come back the dramatic make up of the landscape really hits us again.
The Titan Airways 757 certainly did serve the island well. All we ever heard back from people who flew in/out of St Helena on this aircraft was positive 👍😊
We're all desperate for the day it's safe to begin travel again, Richard, in and out of St Helena. It's been over a year now since the last scheduled flight. Locally the AstraZeneca vaccine has been rolling out, so there's light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for the comment :)
@@mthef10 yes the situation has changed in the last 10 days. Firstly, an incoming passenger on recent charter flight from UK, 24 March, who went into home quarantine, tested positive, but has since tested negative while still in quarantine. Second, a Spanish fishing vessel arrived on 25 March requesting medical assistance. Cases of Covid-19 were confirmed by SHG Health to be onboard. The vessel is currently in quarantine off St Helena, however, one person's condition worsened and had to be brought ashore for medical care and is now in Bradley's Camp's dedicated medical facility awaiting a medical evacuation flight. Currently it would seem the cases identified have been confined to controlled environments with no community spread, which we hope continues to remain so. It is also worth noting the island will begin administering the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine next week to the community. There are enough vaccines now here for every eligible person to receive the two doses.
Very cool video, and I am glad a relatively large plane like the 757 makes an appearance at St.Helena. Hopefully it means more opportunities to visit the island when this coronavirus non-sense is done and be over with.
It's a much appreciated effort here on the island as well. Moving into 2021 we thankfully remain Covid-free still, with 100 vaccines received on the first charter flight of the year. Looking forward to receiving more as they become available which would allow incoming travel restrictions to be reconsidered. Thanks for the comment Jonathon.
Not flown on it ourselves, but we know others who have said the same as you. Good to have Titan Airways serving the island at the moment. Thanks for the comment Luke.
Island population 4,680 (Jan 2019). This flight had a limit on pax numbers to match the island's quarantine facility capacity which is approx 52. There is some additional scope for special circumstances, but generally, for now, incoming numbers will be limited to what the quarantine facility can accommodate.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Yes, just a joke. But I didn't think about Covid (how could not?). This, of course, is how it spreads! Interesting how many people post about this tine island airport and it's new jet traffic.

I watched a documentary about this island a couple of years ago. Until the airport was built St. Helena Island was one of the most remote places on Earth. The only way to get there was by ship from South Africa that ran like once a month, if I remember correctly. The building of the airport was quite controversial for local islanders who were accustomed to their seclusion and way of life and feared that it would come to an end with the introduction of daily air flights. I wonder how most islanders feel now that the airport has been operating for a couple of years? Have things really changed a whole lot since its construction? Are the old ways still alive or are the comforts and conveniences of modernity infiltrating people's minds and way of living?
@@somerandomflightsimmer4188 No, I watched several documentaries on the island, but that wasn't one of them. I think the one I was referring to is titled, "Our World - St Helena - An End to Isolation." Check it out. It's about 23 minutes long and talks about the airport and how it will change the island. Some pro, some against. There are other videos about life on the island that are interesting as well that don't have anything to do with the airport....
This is the perfect jet to land there it’s has excellent thrust to weight. It has the range and if it can’t land it at Helena it can fly back to Africa or Acension Island. And it carries a shit load of frieght and 200 passengers.
It's nice to see a B757 operating there, great performer and good looking as hell. However, it came to my attention that the landing was a bit tight even with 1/4 of its full passenger load. It could be better if an airline acquires a B737-800 or A320 with the modifications used to operate at Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont airport. These special aircrafts have improved braking force to operate at similar extreme conditions (only a 1300m runway, steep aproach, hot and humid!)
The issues with wind shear at the airport were revealed in 2016 with the arrival of a 737-800, and the thinking seemed to come from that to use a different aircraft more suited to the local conditions. In the four years since it's been a slow process of acquiring more information about conditions and aircraft handling, and then trying other planes.
Not sure if it can - the runway on St Helena may possibly be too short. It's only 1950m in length with 1550m available for landing. The airport runway is also situated approx 1,000 ft above sea level. What does the A321LR require in terms of runway specs? There are also going to be other factors to consider, such as the location of the nearest diversionary runway (Ascension, 700 miles).
...dear @Mauri5io!! The 321 LR (stands for long range) is more than capable of using the runway at St. Helena!! The LR can easily brake and stop at some 1100 meters and take off at some 1400 meters!! Buen final de semana, por favor!! Jacob Hansen, Escandinavia del norte...
Does not matter - wait until the next generation of planes comes, they can reach any point likely round trip. Engine tech and aerodynamics are close to putting some crazy different stuff into production in the next years.
If not a LOT more fuel-efficient jets are coming soon - way better engines - and I would expect within the decade that any place on earth is reachable by a small business jet with VTOL capacity. At least if one specific startup - that is well funded and has quite some published papers - is right, things will change immensely in the aviation industry.
I wonder will Airbus attempt to use the A320neo or the A321neo to fly to this airport from Cape Town. It's certainly within the range of either plane to make the flight regularly.
Range isn’t really an issue. Landing/Take Off tolerances are. An A319 could likely do it in most conditions. An A320... more limited. An A321 likely will not be able to, especially loaded.

We still have challenging weather conditions, especially wind, however, the knowledge gathered these past few years and the weather forecasting expertise all now contributes to a smooth and reliable service.
Delays, when they do happen, are mostly due to low cloud conditions rather than the wind.

That's a gorgeous airstrip and airport ! Wow !
The setting is pretty special 😍✈
These where my first experience. Loved it and still do.
Great views from the other side of the runway. Lets hope this mammoth engineering feat gets the usage it deserves. Go Saints!
It was our first time on the other side of the runway, very cool position. Thanks for the feedback Prof.Heinous
Kai Tak, Gibraltar, now St Helena. The BOTs have had some terrifying airports over the years.
Would love to visit once the world goes back to normal
That would be great - please come and visit.
You can buy St Helena coffee in the UK from Cardews of Oxford, currently £18.75 for 125g, by mail order or at the Covered Market, it's nice stuff.

Thanks for the comment, Mery 😊
great shots of historic moment for the island's airport (Titan Airways) ZAP 757 thanks for up-loading
You're welcome Richard, thanks for the comment
A 757 on a 1600m runway surrounded by cliffs and strong winds. This is actually really amazing
For most Saints, (as people of St Helena are known) who've only had an airport since 2015/16, it is still a real novelty to watch a plane landing here. It will be a long while before this wears off.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext runway lenght is 1850 meters or 6070 feet when read data on FLIGHT RADAR 24. True or not??

Seems odd they need a control tower in St. Helena. Cool video!
Thanks Charlie Baker, glad you enjoyed the video. There have been occasions (not many) since we opened when there have been 2 or 3 aircraft here at once.
What The Saints Did Next very cool! I find airports like yours really interesting. Best wishes to you all.
Perfect landings, nicely filmed and great sound!
Thanks a lot!
I’ve been on 3 757s and there amazing planes
3:37: Positive rate, Gear up
3:44: Positive Rate, Gear up?
3:50: Jerry! Raise the f**king Gear!
Lmao i noticed that too. T’was strange
Elliot like imagine how much fuel is burned due to drag trying to climb with gear down
@@elliot7753 Not really.
@@elliot7753 Brake cooling

Nice one , I’ve seen this 757 a couple of times at Belfast International.
Cheers
what a sound those engines radiate, just Great
We obviously don't get many aircraft, even before all the 2020 disruptions, so just hearing jet engines is quite a thrilling novelty here on the island :)
RR 'chainsaw' sound, as it often described.
@@glynnwright1699 ah, can hear what you mean. Thanks. We will start using that as well now :)
This is great news having flights to visit
Hi Angelo, the Titan Airways flights (in this video) operated for two years, 2020-2022, during Covid-19 isolation.
Since March 2022 the island is once again served by a regular, weekly flight (Saturdays) from Johannesburg, South Africa, by Airlink.
You book tickets via the Airlink website.
And for holiday accommodation on the island, see: travelsthelena.com/
Very skilled pilot. Bravooo
I wonder who charted it... this is a very unusual event!
What The Saints Did Next superb explanation mate ! thank you

Sometimes when we look at the turmoil in the news, from other places, it does make us appreciate the peacefulness of St Helena even more.
Hope you do manage to make a visit one day. If you do begin to plan, then check out Travel St Helena for holiday accommodation options: travelsthelena.com/

Just read the blog and watched the footage. Very interesting and well documented. Also making your island more interesting and keen to visit. I think the B757 is the perfect plane for St. Helena airport for tos landing, take off performance, payload and range. The load factor will be the main decision on this. Will keep watching.
I literally watched this plane land on Flightradar24 but it stopped moving right before landing... I have no clue why
Looks a magnificent sight to behold amidst the rocky terrain.
It is rather magnificent Anthony, as you say. Living here it's easy to become used to. However, when we travel abroad for a bit and come back the dramatic make up of the landscape really hits us again.
Looked on the money to me and room to spare on all of the landings/take-offs. What a very nice job they did with this great airport.
It certainly looked good from close up :)
skilled pilot
For sure 👍
The 757 is best suited for St. Helena's short runway. It's a beautiful super powerful aircraft.
The Titan Airways 757 certainly did serve the island well. All we ever heard back from people who flew in/out of St Helena on this aircraft was positive 👍😊
Braziliam Embraer was first approved craft for St. Helena
That was a very good looking training. Thank you.

You are welcome. Stay safe for the summer.
Fantastic. Can't wait until they build an airport on Pitcairn Island...
The company who built ours on St Helena, Basil Read from South Africa, certainly did a great job :)
They built one on the Isle of Dogs
Still looking forward to the day I can book a flight from the UK and visit. :)
We're all desperate for the day it's safe to begin travel again, Richard, in and out of St Helena.
It's been over a year now since the last scheduled flight.
Locally the AstraZeneca vaccine has been rolling out, so there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for the comment :)
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Thank you. :)
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Has there been any cases? Is the spread contained?
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Great that there is no serious spread!
Very cool video, and I am glad a relatively large plane like the 757 makes an appearance at St.Helena. Hopefully it means more opportunities to visit the island when this coronavirus non-sense is done and be over with.
Yes, let's hope Paul. Thanks for the comment.
Good see the UK Government along with our sister nations working together to keep everyone safe.
Can't wait to visit this airport in msfs 2020
Flown on that actual aircraft G-ZAPX several times. She’s so well looked after, credit to Titan people.
Not flown on it ourselves, but we know others who have said the same as you. Good to have Titan Airways serving the island at the moment.
Thanks for the comment Luke.
What a beauty!!! 😍
It was a beautiful sight :)
51 passengers? That's about half the population, right?

Are the old ways still alive or are the comforts and conveniences of modernity infiltrating people's minds and way of living?
lemme guess it was by wendover productions called "the worlds most useful airport"
Beautiful island & i love it.

3:12, the engines sound like they're labouring and there's hardly any increase in speed. Maybe just an optical illusion?

This is the perfect jet to land there it’s has excellent thrust to weight. It has the range and if it can’t land it at Helena it can fly back to Africa or Acension Island. And it carries a shit load of frieght and 200 passengers.
Thanks for the comment, Estoy Gringo. It's certainly made a good first impression here on the island.
How a 757 200 landed on a 6500 ft runway ?
Brakes, ground spoilers, and reverse thrust.
Great sight ! Isn't the 757 one of the aircraft Atlantic Star are considering for the route?
I believe so. They almost made the flight a few years back but it was cancelled unfortunately.
Great Video, Thanks!
You're welcome, Tim :)
Parabéns pelo registro,imagem belíssima
Obrigado Keith
I wonder if the new A321LR can land at the St Helena airport!!!
Cheers from Mallorca island (Spain)
Not sure if it can - the runway on St Helena may possibly be too short. It's only 1950m in length with 1550m available for landing. The airport runway is also situated approx 1,000 ft above sea level. What does the A321LR require in terms of runway specs? There are also going to be other factors to consider, such as the location of the nearest diversionary runway (Ascension, 700 miles).
possible with A220
@@ppc7457 hope we're there to photograph the first one, if it comes 😎
...dear @Mauri5io!! The 321 LR (stands for long range) is more than capable of using the runway at St. Helena!! The LR can easily brake and stop at some 1100 meters and take off at some 1400 meters!! Buen final de semana, por favor!! Jacob Hansen, Escandinavia del norte...
@@jacobhansen6450 so the newest A321XLR could also land on that runway! Saludos desde Mallorca 😄

Thanks Mike, would love the chance to do a film from the cockpit! That would be soooo cool :)
An A-220 can now probably operate direct nonstop flights to London and Johannesburg from St. Helena.
It would be brilliant to have direct flights to UK/Europe again one day.
Does not matter - wait until the next generation of planes comes, they can reach any point likely round trip. Engine tech and aerodynamics are close to putting some crazy different stuff into production in the next years.
@@ThomasTomiczek that’s why I mentioned A-220. check out its specifics.
Not sure for the A220
If not a LOT more fuel-efficient jets are coming soon - way better engines - and I would expect within the decade that any place on earth is reachable by a small business jet with VTOL capacity. At least if one specific startup - that is well funded and has quite some published papers - is right, things will change immensely in the aviation industry.
Tailwind landing with the sea at the far end of the runway... what could possibly go wrong?
I wonder will Airbus attempt to use the A320neo or the A321neo to fly to this airport from Cape Town. It's certainly within the range of either plane to make the flight regularly.
Range isn’t really an issue. Landing/Take Off tolerances are. An A319 could likely do it in most conditions. An A320... more limited. An A321 likely will not be able to, especially loaded.
Also depends on demand
Of course a 757! I knew it could do it! The sports car of passenger jets!
A number of people have been suggesting the 757 over the last few years, so it was good to finally see it land here.
