  • Driving on St Helena is probably the best way to experience the island, whether you're a resident or short-term visitor.
    Although St Helena is a British island with most of the same driving laws, there are some unique and sometimes quirky rules and guidelines that are worth knowing, before getting behind the wheel.
    One of the biggest challenges on St Helena is the steep terrain! If that's not enough, the roads are often single lane, tight hairpin turns and blind bends are everywhere and signage is minimal.
    But don't panic!
    Check out this short video with tips and insights to driving on St Helena, designed to help the first-time visitor to have a safe and enjoyable experience getting around the island.
    Some of the videography gear we used in the making of this film:

    Action camera: amzn.to/3On2oAc
    Drone: amzn.to/3K2NBbx

      They’re both beautiful, but really, hardly comparable! St Helena is clearly the result of ancient upheavals and geologic activity, which is what ended up making the island so rugged and vertically oriented… by comparison, isn’t French Polynesia (like many Southern Pacific nations) mainly comprised of coral atolls and more low-lying landmasses? Of course, I’m sure geologic processes sculpted the landscape of the South Pacific, as well…

      Hey @ArtemHemingwey, thanks for the comment and your feedback. Re driving at night, people manage it fine, although, it does help that we already know the layout of the road network. • @Visionery1
    @Visionery1 Год назад +3

    1:54, by rights he should've waited since you were coming up the hill, an old rule from the ox cart days - not even a thank you. One sees no scooters, they would be more practical (parking, no need for hooting, nimble), are they not allowed on St. Helena? If allowed, then their rental would be a lucrative business. BTW, your drone footage is excellent!

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  Год назад +3

      Hey Visionary1, it's probably the angle of footage making it look that way, in fact he was actually coming up what was the very slightest of inclines. Quite often, what actually happens when the road is fairly level, and even sometimes on a gentle hills, the driver closest to a bay tends to pull over first as a courtesy gesture, even if they're coming up.
      Good point about scooters. At a guess, historically, the steep hills have been problematic for the low-powered scooters. However, that said, in recent years there has been a noticeable increase in the number of scooters being imported and used. We suspect the modern models have better hill-climbing capability as they seem to be coping well. Numbers are still low though, at this time. Sorry now we didn't manage to get one in the film.
      Thanks for the feedback 👍 The drone footage took a lot of planning, so nice when it's appreciated.

      @@dexterbeef1132 trail bikes seemed to be quite popular in the 80s & early 90s with younger people (we used to have one ourselves😊) but the trend shifted to owning small cars as first vehicles.
      The winter weather on St Helena probably doesn't help, it can be quite wet, windy and cold for the better part of 5 months from about July.
      Another factor is probably the practical advantages of the car in terms of cargo capacity and a mode of transport for the family.
      There are still a few trail bikes around but their numbers are low.

      Hi Marcos, although Napoleon died and was buried on St Helena, 19 years later his body was exhumed and taken to France where it now rests. However, his original tomb on the island is well maintained and one of the island's most popular tourist attractions, as is his 'prison' house at Longwood. Napolèon was exiled to St Helena and didnt manage to change the traffic side of the road , as he did in most of Europe that he occupied , and perhaps the contrary US 😂😅

    Steep hills and the need to import fuel seem like strong incentives to adopt EVs. Is that hampered by the dependence on the South African vehicle market, or would the grid need updating?

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @gchecosse, thanks for the comment. EVs are beginning to make an appearance on island, numbers still very low though, at a guess this may be to do with the higher costs of those vehicles to buy initially and also there's a tendency towards vehicles we know can be maintained by the garages on island.
      Vehicles tend to be imported from UK rather than South Africa.
      Not sure how the grid and charging is affected. There are no public charging points currently.
      The private sector are leading the shift toward photo voltaic cells in recent years, so it's likely the number of EVs will increase soon.
      Import rates for vehicles are based its emissions. More info here: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/driving/

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  8 месяцев назад

      Hi Asitta, thanks for checking out our video and your comment. 👍
      We actually do have a few industries or commercial enterprises on St Helena, such as fishing, coffee, agriculture & livestock farming and tourism. Unfortunately, visitor numbers are very low and export freight costs are extremely high so most industries still rely on some degree of government subsidy in order to survive, as does a big proportion of the island functions. One or two of the private-sector coffee plantations, we believe, survive on their own via both local and export sales.
      And one major source of income for the island has been offshore St Helenian workers sending home remittance payments.
      Trust this information is useful. Cheers 😊

      Hey @i-craftsdesign3175, no problem at all, it's always good to hear honest and differing viewpoints about St Helena 👍
      People on the island also worry about losing what makes the place so special.
      We noticed ourselves most recently, that excitable buzz that used to fill the town when the ship arrived and the days afterwards, is sadly no more since the RMS retired.
      And we all complain about all the cars in town!
      Like other small places around the world, we really need some good decision-making by those in power to help chart St Helena's progress in the best possible way.

      The island has a dedicated cargo ship, the MV Helena, which operates between St Helena and Cape Town to bring in most goods, including vehicles. A lot of the island's supplies are imported from UK, trans-shipped via Cape Town.
      A very small amount of goods are air-freighted on the weekly flight, but it's quite limited as passengers take priority. Also, expensive by air.

      Hahaha 😂 great question, @janellek21👍
      The Plantation House paddock where he lives is now fenced off, so he is safely contained, no disruption to road traffic, which is good.
      However, interestingly enough, a former keeper who we interviewed once for a newspaper article, told us about the days before Jonathan became famous - before fencing off the lawn - when he would 'escape' and often had to be retrieved from the St Paul's cemetery nearby! This would have meant crossing the road to get there, although, we are talking about perhaps 50 or more years ago, so the number of vehicles on island then would have been significantly less.

      Hi James, St Helena is a British Overseas Territory. The island was uninhabited and undiscovered until 1502 when the Portugese stumbled across it.
      Various nations' ships called in over the years for replenishment from the island's abundance of fruit and fresh water but, apart from those left ashore to recuperate from illnesses who were collected later, basically the island remained uninhabited.
      The British established the first settlement in 1659 and apart from an attempt by the Dutch to seize ownership, the St Helena has remained British ever since.
      The island was never actually an African nation.
      Today St Helena is supported directly by Britain and all St Helenians have full British citizenship.
      Hope that helps clarify things.
