    There are sandy beaches around Malta as well, not just rocky ones. But do not take it for advantage that all the beaches will have sand. Regardless, visiting Malta is an incredible experience and we highly recommend you visiting.

    As a Maltese citizen, I can say that's pretty much spot on.
    With regards to the traffic, if you are going to hire a car here, avoid the rush hour time at all costs unless you want to endure a miserable time stuck in traffic. Avoid driving between 8-10am, and 4-6pm on weekdays. Also, during the summer it is possible to find some main roads that have been closed due to the village feast e.g. 15th August in Mosta - the whole city square will be closed off to traffic, which can be very annoying and frustrating.
    As for the servers, it is pretty much hit and miss. It is, unfortunately, quote true that most restaurants, hotels, pubs etc here are quite understaffed, and while they are generally very nice and helpful, they just can't afford to give that much attention to everyone when they have to attend to so many tables, especially during peak season.
    So unless you are here specifically for the summer life, I'd recommend visiting during the spring or summer, when the weather is much more tolerable and there will be fewer tourists around.

    Case in point about the traffic. I work in an office right next to the airport runway. Last night, a lorry (semi; tractor-trailer) managed to overturn in a corner, at 2:30 in the morning. I left for work five hours after that, and it took me 1.5 hours to get to the airport.
    Which is one reason why I prefer working from home, which works pretty well with a 2 Gbps broadband connection.

    Malta is lovely for a long stay in the winter. You can fly there from UK with AirMalta for about £50 each way. Package trips there from UK are cheap, and there are long stay deals for all of Dec or all of Jan including flights and meals for about £500. You can buy a weekly/monthly unlimited bus travel pass for not much and explore all of Malta, but take an umbrella. I managed to get into the Hypergeum buying at ticket at the door as I was alone and there was a space on a tour. There are steep hills, bastions and ramparts, with views all around so take binoculars and comfy shoes.
    You can even take a flight from Luqa in Malta to Alexandria in Egypt and onward to Cairo or Luxor. Only one per week so book early.

    Great for a holiday but not to live there. Wages are terrible, housing is now the moat expensive in the world and a lack of certain jobs makes a lot of people want to leave. That being said its probably the best country to raise a family in due to adoption of several socialist policies such as child care allowance, great healthcare, free university and schools with an added stipend given out to students who are in college and university.

Check out Captain Morgan excursions they have been going for years and do trips to the blue lagoon ( yes it is blue) and all day trips around the island. Popeye the movie with Robin Williams was made here and in Valletta some of Gladiator was filmed, and don't forget the island won the George Cross during ww2.

    another thing I like about Malta is that there are no homeless people or beggars, as it is illegal to beg in the streets or sleep on the streets. When I went to Rome, that was the thing that really put me off most. that makes Malta super safe. I lived here for 24 years, never got mugged, neither any of my family... However be careful from some shady foreigners as there are repeated crimes on the news committed by foreigners.
    Also can't stress enough the good and affordable food and nightlife, and history. Not to brag, but our history is amazing, and its really a shame a lot of my people don't appreciate it and not even know it.

    I like to watch your videos, they're very insightful and I find them very helpful when I travel. However, you seem to be misinformed.....I don't know who told you that they're only a few sandy beaches in Malta, as a Maltese myself I can tell you that there's actually quite a lot for the size of the country.
    St.Thomas Bay, Pretty Bay, St Peters Bay, Mistra Bay, Mellieħa bay, Għajn tuffieha bay, Golden Bay, Armier Bay, Little Armier bay, Paradise bay, Gnejna Bay, St George's Bay, and Buġibba Bay, are just a few of the numerous sandy beaches on the Islands. It is true that there are more rocky beaches than there are sandy ones, but it would be wrong to say that there's only 'a sand beach' (which to me implies just one).

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  10 лет назад +2

      Aj Turner Thank you for the sandy beaches heads up. All the locals were telling me to just focus on beach bars as there were mostly rocky beaches. Good to know!

    • @TheMaltamonument
      @TheMaltamonument 9 лет назад

      woltersworld in the north there are some great beaches. South not so much. But Golden Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, Paradise Bay, Ghadira Bay and Ramla l-Hamra (in Gozo) are all great sandy beaches, however usually overpopulated with tourists.

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne 9 лет назад +2

      Maybe it's because I'm Dutch (been living in Malta for the last 14 years though), where the beaches stretch for many kilometres, and are very wide, too, but Maltese sandy beaches are very small. There's really no comparison with traditional beach holidays destinations. Plenty to see here, but it's not really the country for a beach holiday.

    My Advice is do not drive in Malta. Get a Tallinja €12 euro plastic card you get 12 journeys and you can go all the way from the airport to your hotel/hostel for just over 1€ . Malta discourages you from driving due to congestion, encouraging buses instead. Don't line up to buy a ticket for Gozo ferry wait until the regular ferry is about to leave and jump straight on the ferry for €5 return ticket paying when you return. Catch a bus to Victoria with your Tallinja ticket go up the steep narrow hill at Victoria for real Italian Sicilian ice cream. Pinacolada is my favourite. Sit outside and eat your Pastizzi after buying your Fanta and Pastizzi from the booth not within the Restaurant, then 3 of you can eat for under €20, when you are ready to return to the Malta mainland don't catch the expensive open top bus catch the X2 and it will take you round the West side of Gozo, your own Island tour without a crowded bus. They take you through the American/Canadian Quarter on the X2.

    About the Hypogeum. It's good that you have to book in advance as it is an old heritage site which tourists want to see a lot and we have to let a number of people at once as a safety measure so that's why you have to book in advance. I'm Maltese aswell

    The Bad...
    1. Malta is an island 50km by 20 max.. so you can't really have 10 flights a day to the place.
    2. Driving: Well it's on the fringe of Europe so sadly they drive like most people in the Middle East/North Africa.
    3. Service: It's all about the money and their pockets - but then which country isn't?
    4. Lonely Planet: They must be the worst publishers and tour guides possible. Very superficial with no details at all, for anywhere in the world. They give a mention to places you should visit, with no other detail. Stay clear of them. Personally I go for Rough Guide editions.
    5. Malta is cheap? LOL I found that even major cities in Europe are cheaper than here for stuff like eating out. Hotels, yeah, they are cheaper. Lunch specials for 5 Euros and a drink included? WOW tell me where!!! Will go there on my next visit.
    6. You forgot to add the locals have ruined their own country with all the rubbish buildings they are going for, such as Sliema point opposite Valletta and that giant dildo they built in Paceville..and more coming up. But it's their own country and they have to live with it.
    The Good (far outweigh all of the above) - the people, really helpful and nice in general when not on ego trips behind their steering wheel ... the food.. rich in culture and so much packed in such a tiny little place.. the history is amazing.. churches..The sea is crystal clear if you're into diving or snorkeling, Gozo is gorgeous and yes, in winter the north part of the island and Gozo are really green.
    Best time to visit - October till June - Avoid July - September (too hot, millions of tourists that add to the density problem)
    Go and Enjoy - very unique place

      DocKnight Philco 1. malta is 15 by 11 km, 2. i've been to tunisia (which is in north africa) and malta, so i'm qualified to say that driving in these countries is literally incomparable to driving in, for example, athens or rome. so it is not THAT bad. 5. malta IS cheap. i'm from serbia and not rich at all, so if i was able to afford a trip to malta and have a great time, anyone from west or north europe should be able to make a trip to malta. 6. de gustibus non est disputandum

    Hi, im Maltese and some of the bad things mentioned have been slightly fixed but when it comes to the transport take the bus and dont use the white taxis because they can easily scam you, use people like Johns which offer a mush better service. And some advice when eating or for doing activities always ask the locals for a better experience. But great vid!!

Malta is not cheap I find it more expensive than the London lol. Btw Malta does have sandy beaches... also not a fan of the food at all. The cathedrals are beautiful and the temples are quite interesting to look at. So far my favourite places have been Blue lagoon (Comino), Gozo (go quad biking), Mdina. I disagree with the beach comment. It is true that the major areas around Valletta don't have sandy beaches, though jumping off the rocks or swimming clubs works just fine. Sandy beaches can be found at Golden Bay or on Gozo. They're best just slightly off-season, when it's still hot enough to swim. These places are super easy to access, public transportation is reliable. I was there in late October 2013, and a day at Golden Bay was paradise.
