      This really proves that he really understands what he's talking about, not just reading a script in the back of the camera. And sure, he really did the research before delivering any video.

Honestly would you react that way if we were all in the same room and this conversation was actually happening out loud? Holy crap, how have I not discovered this wonderful man after being on the internet for 6 years? Judging from some of the comments which I thought made sense but weren't agreeable with his calculation on the "weight of a video", I still think it's useful information nonetheless. Even if he were incorrect, the fact that such a philosophical question facilitated a discussion is fantastic because everyone can benefit from it simultaneously. Before this video, I wouldn't even have known that you can actually calculate something that isn't physically present, if you get what I mean. That itself is already fascinating and I love how he draws audiences in by arousing their curiosity which is darn smart - The world needs more educators like him. The current focus in the education system in my opinion isn't so much focused on getting children to learn because we're curious individuals but because we want a stupid distinction on a test paper. I think it's sad like that because if we're constantly drilled into the head that, that's all learning is about - getting an A for an examination - then it already defeats the true purpose of learning. It also teaches kids that learning happens only when you're at school and that it isn't a lifelong process, which is not the case. I'm glad he's on RUclips to properly educate people, not that the education system is doing it 100% wrong, I just don't see eye to eye with their current focus.

    So, based on the fact that 1 minute of video weighs 10 to the negative 19, or 0.0000000000000000001 grams, could you take an empty 100TB HDD, weigh it, fill it up with hours and days of videos, weigh it again and see a measurable difference on a scale? Or, to rephrase, how large, in terms of storage capacity, would a HDD have to be, for us to measure actual weight of data, whatever this might be, using an ordinary, albeit very precise, scale?

    • @Kanglar
      @Kanglar 8 лет назад +2

      +alxcsb
      Data stored is just the product of a particular arrangement within a solid state device, consisting of bits that are determined to be either a 1 or 0. An analogy would be a bunch of coins with either heads facing up or tails up. If you flip a few coins you have changed the data (downloaded the video), but you still have the same amount of coins that still weigh the same and even have the same relativistic weight as they still have the same energy. What happened is it took energy for you to flip the coins, this would be analogous to the energy that comprises the "weight of the video". In the computer that energy is dissipated as heat and thus power is consumed.

  • @MarkHidden
    @MarkHidden 10 лет назад +6

    This kinda bugs me, because he is measuring the transmission weight, not the video weight, which could infact be negative with respect to the device that is storing the information. In the same way that a blank punch card weighs more than a punch card with holes in it. Now to make a fair comparison, we need to talk about the proportion of the hard drive or the memory card that is being used to store the video.

    • @MikeGyorgyiMMG
      @MikeGyorgyiMMG 10 лет назад +2

      well, at least he made me think about it and want to understand it better. Most people can't even understand that data weighs (or that it's actually physical, it has a body)... And that's the point that Michael wanted to make. If you know how to talk, and how to get the attention of people, you can "accidentally" teach them something.
      Most people these days avoid education, they are "too cool for school". What he is doing is teaching us a way to get people interested and encourage even the most ignorant of people to learn new things.
