Taxes are high but you also get what you pay for. Loudoun and FFX have elite public schools that pay teachers a living wage, excellent roads and reliable enterprise-level broadband. Proximity to the Federal Government also ensures a stable job market and higher than average wages. We all would like to pay less taxes - but I’ve also done enough traveling around the country to see what the gets you.
I lived in Centreville, Tysons Corner, Springfield & Alexandria. She is correct, Housing and rent are expensive. The traffic here is worst than LA. And the yearly Car tax is crazy
Also while the schools are well resourced, it is a very pressure-cooker environment for kids. You have to be signed up for travel sports in utero to even be considered for a high-school team. Everyone thinks they’re important. This is part of why we will never live there again but will keep our house in Springfield for forever and rent it out.
I understand that Northern Virginia is expensive, but Maryland is also costly. Currently, Maryland is ranked as the 5th most expensive state in the U.S. (according to World Population Review). Even Montgomery County, MD has higher taxes than Fairfax County, VA.
I agree; I was born and raised in North Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland, and I can say it's quite expensive. My family decided to move to Tysons in Fairfax County, Virginia, mainly because of the high cost of living in Montgomery County.
That personal property tax on cars feels like such a scam. I paid it for the first time this year and I'm ready to move out of here. I'll see you soon Maryland!
I grow up 30 miles north of DC .. now living 80 miles west of DC .. so lived in MD and VA .. My advice don't move here unless you are very rich...low quality of life. I will leave the area when I retire soon ...If you are retired , why live in this expensive , crowded area ??
I knew a family that was in Dale City, VA for a long time. Then when he hit 61 he retired and sold the house and they moved to Florida, I forgot to ask them how they're doing!!! I'll try Facebook. Wow!
I’ve lived in Northern Virginia (and DC) for about 22 years total. First came to the area in 1995 for year-long training when I was in the military; newly married with a 2-month old daughter. Lived in an apartment complex in Annandale VA next to I-495. We struggled on my Sergeant/E-5 salary. Moved back to the area in mid-2000 for another year-long training stint, but lived in base at Bolling AFB (now called Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling) in DC. Both iterations of training were between overseas military assignments. Then, in 2004, we moved back to Virginia (stationed/place of duty in DC); we’ve been lived in the area since then; about 12 years in Prince William Co (Dale City and Woodbridge), and since 2016, in Loudoun Co (close to Leesburg). I retired from the military in 2014; weeks decided to stay in the area for my wife’s federal govt career and it’s the only place our (now adult) kids call home, as we lived overseas for much of the time they were y years old and under.
The only two toll roads that you can’t avoid if you are traveling in that direction are the Dulles Toll Road (unless you are going to Dulles Airport, which is free) and I-66inside the beltway. Which can cost >$40 one way on a bad day. All the rest have free options.
I've lived here for most of my life and I am now retired. My family is here, that's the only reason I haven't left. IT IS CRAZY EXPENSIVE LIVING HERE, ESPECIALLY HOUSING!! I just paid my annual car tax, and it was OVER $1,000.00!! And I only have a 2023 Honda CRV. The weather in the summer here sucks because of the humidity. I like fall and winter because it's not as humid. Traffic is a nightmare that you never wake up from. It will take years off your life if you have to commute to DC during rush hour. And people that pay to ride in the toll lanes must be rich because your average joe can't afford it. Everyone is in a hurry because of the traffic so watch out!! My advice: DON'T MOVE HERE!!!! Just sayn
I live in northeast AZ. I paid registration/plates on my 2 cars and it came to a whopping $165. One of the plates expires in 2027, and the other expires in 2029. And I just got my property tax bill -- $800.
Even after moving here (well, MD actually) a bunch of years ago, it's good to know that some things I'd observed are 'normal' for the area and not just in my head 😅 Do you have any plans to make a MD-version of this list, too?
Sounds like half the problem is owning a car and driving it to places in one of the most densely populated places in the country. Maybe people should consider using WMATA more, since they're doing great amount of expansion and improvements. That family of 4 owning 4 cars is just textbook gaudy lifestyle. Not once did they consider reducing to 2 or even 3 cars such that one of the children get picked up by others.
Additionally, leasing a new car every 3 years is considered by financial and car experts as the worst way to have a car. You take the biggest hit in depreciation AND you don't get to reap the benefits of owning for several years after the depreciation. You will save substantially more money both for owning and in the property tax by buying a 3-5 year old car and keeping it for even as little as 3-4 more years. The longer you keep, the lesser the per year expense becomes.
Good morning, I have a question about northern Virginia car tax which I believe you have the Knowlege to answer for some of us headed to the DC area for work. If I live and vote in another state and have my vehicle registered in that state, but I buy a second home in northern Virginia and Stationed that Vehicle at that second home do I have to pay Northern Virginia car tax every year. I have tried asking your DMV but they seem to not want to answer, or they say they don't know depending on who answer the phone. do you have any insight on this question.
This video is extremely misleading in many respects. For one example, using Falls Church as if it were typical of all of Northern Virginia. Let's compare. Falls church covers only 2.2 square miles, while Montgomery County MD covers 507 Square miles. That means there are 230 neighborhoods in Montgomery as large in area as Falls Church, and I'm sure there are some of those 230 neighborhoods that are just as wealthy and just as expensive as Falls Church! Similarly, Falls Church has a population of about 14,600 compared to 1,053,000 in Montgomery County -- 72 times larger! Those from outside the area wouldn't know that from watching this video!
Are you saying that Montgomery County Maryland is not also expensive? As you said in the intro to your video, your "information" was supposedly aimed at people who were choosing between the Virginia and Maryland suburbs, But absolutely nothing you said negative about Virginia isn't just as bad -- or worse -- in Montgomery County MD. Higher income taxes. Higher utility costs. Equally or higher housing costs (unless, of course, you're trying to push people toward high-crime Prince Georges County which is more accessible to downtown Washington than is Montgomery County..). Same sales tax rate as Northern Virginia. My comments stand.

yeah, and then you can pay Montgomery county income tax!
@@Joes432 It's still less expensive than Arlington County tax + vehicle property tax
@@prospectnyc it's literally not for most people.

Nobody makes anyone use the toll express lanes, i personally refuse to ever use them. i'll sit in the traffic and save the $26 or more

I lived there for a little over a year and moved away. What a greedy area, especially that 267 toll road
The nickname for Ashburn was Cashburn I remember that much.
You don't have to use the toll roads
Make one for MD please!
