The military's Joint Helicopter Command unit has been called in to restore a 200-year-old icon of the Wiltshire landscape. The Alton Barnes White Horse has presided over the hills there since its creation by a farmer in 1812, and local residents in Wiltshire decided it needed some restoration. The military was called in to help transport the 46 tonnes of chalk needed for the job.

Well done, all of our chalk carvings should be brought back to life . Especially the Fovant Badges near Salisbury, in memory of all the Soldiers that were camped here in Wiltshire on their way to the front in 1914 1918 , it's up to us the younger Generation to keep their memories alive, and tell our Grandchildren ( me I'm 60 years old ) the Sacrifice their Great Great Great Grandfather gave for King and COUNTRY. God Bless the Forces.

Nice to help the civi population from time to time. That said, I hope it did not interfere with war role training. Would it have been easier/ less expensive to lift the vehicle access rule for a few days and use 4x4, 6x6 trucks.

This veteran wishes you well Troy and thanks you for your service. (The Americans say that and it's a nice thing to do. Here, people burn poppies in sight of the police who do nothing. I propose that the two things are linked, poor funding and no respect for our military personnel, past and present.) BTW I'm British and moaning is my hard won birthright.

@@gusgone4527 Ha believe me we share the same national pastime as moaning and griping about stuff, I think maybe we're just a little bit more argumentative.
Believe me, we do things like this all of the time around our bases, the more exposure we get the better of a light people see us in, ultimately that helps us.
Aside from that I can see this as being excellent training for a multitude of things, both for the pilots and you ground personnel! Your tax dollars are not being wasted here, rest assured.

depending on the slope of the hill surely some bags depending how high and fast they were dropped could end up rolling or splitting down the hill, but the latter would of been useful anyways.
