- R-Type is one of my all-time favourite games. I’m not very good at shoot ’em-ups but back in the early 90s, I played R-Type to completion on the Sega Master System. Several years later I went looking for a Mega Drive version of the game, only to learn that it never came to my favourite 16-bit console. For the next 30 years, I kept drifting back what could have been. R-Type deserved to be on the Sega Genesis, the sound, the visuals, and the number of sprites, it was perfect for Sega’s console. Well finally, my yearning for this game on the Mega Drive has been fulfilled with Mega R-Type.

This is OUTSTANDING! R-Type for the Master System was my go to game back in the day and I always loved the sound track and now to have this. Wow! The passion and the talent in the Mega Drive / Genesis community is just off the charts and that goes for your amazing physical cart and case for the demo. Really top tier stuff. With all that said, I am simply amazed at what is being made for my beloved system. Thanks for this look. I am with you on the excitement for this 100%!

Don't know if you're aware Mike, but there's only the left channel audio for your straight to camera bits. I promise I'll be the only one to notice this ;)
Really I have left and right through my earphones. I am testing out a new mic and a dedicated camera so it's possible I've f'd it.

The Genesis continues to amaze. This port looks amazing, and the physical set looks really legit. Labor of love all the way around.

As a kid, it was the console I wanted to have but never could, and then I forgot about it... until one month ago, when I found a full Tower of Power on sale at my local second-hand shop. R-Type was also one of my absolute favourites. I played that game so much, I do think I could have easily purchased the whole arcade cabinet for the regular pricing back then.

The Master System version was already extremely competent for an 8-bit port, with few disparities in graphic effects for the arcade. It's unbelievable what they've done there, showing the full power of Sega's 3rd generation console... And I was proud to own both the console and the cartridge. The Mega Drive port is a kind of test run that complements what could still be done to the game using the 16-bit hardware, such as the use of parallax backgrounds. There's practically no difference from the arcade, with very subtle variations in the coloring of the elements. And no doubt the printing of the booklets is very promising, you really are an enthusiast, Mike.
I love the Master System version, I think it is one of the best arcade ports for a 8bit console.

The auto shoot is on be default, and I've never got used to it in shooters. I always find myself pressing the buttons.😅

This looks top-shelf for sure; I tried the beta out and the final product I'd expect to be in the conversation for being one of the overall highest quality shmups on Mega Drive, or at least in the top 20 since there are so many of them. R-Type is far from my favorite game in the genre but I still appreciate the passion put into this. The extras are so nice to just distinguish this from the many versions on other consoles, and the respawn option I believe is probably an exclusive feature. Like you said it could work both ways due to the power-up issue and not having smart bombs to stay alive until you can work your way back like in most vertical shmups. On the other hand it could be handy if you have almost defeated a boss and just need that last bit of offense to get to the next stage.

@@RetroGamerBoy I won't need it, but you definitely belong to those types of people I like: the non-greedy types who don't need to hear a cash register notoriously, every time a finger had been bent, but rather belong to those, who like to share with their fellow man. You deserve a subscription for that alone.
I have loads of versions of this game, loved it since it came out and was always sad it didnt come out on Mega Drive (though the PC Engine version is brilliant), but the big USP of this one is the conversion and 16-bit upgrade of the Master System "secret" stage. That and all the extra options and features make this totally KILLER !!! very happy about it and certainly interested in a physical edition! Although i dont suppose it will be quite as awesome as your home made packaging, amazing job Mike! Somebody started converting Gradius 2 a while ago, sadly that seems to have been abandoned, i hope this project completes.
I'd love to see Gradius 2 come to the system.

I loved r-type - especially in the arcade, but also the slightly dodgy Atari ST conversion which was the only way I could play it at home at the time. Hopefully when it's complete they will release a physical copy with a cover and manual? If not, I may be begging you for a print! 😁

I bought TurboGrafix for R-type, beat the game then sold the console and picked up Sega Genesis...the true winner of the 90's console war.

The SMS was my first home console as a kid, and R-Type was by far the game I played the most on it. So much nostalgia.
This new version for the Genesis looks fantastic. Kudos to the devs for what they've done so far. Can't wait to see how the rest of the project pans out.

I don't mind so much for not getting back then an R-Type version for the Megadrive because of the truly amazing Master System port.
The SNES version of the R-Type is full of slowdown but i guess its an ok port, but the Third Lightning that the SNES got is an amazing addition to the series.
This version (Third Lightning) is the one that i wanted more to see on the Megadrive.
I've never played that, Ill give it a play.
Never really knew why an R-Type game never made it to the Genesis after the original turned out so good on the Master System,I believe the arcade version of part 2 showed up around the same time as the genesis release and an arcade conversion of part 2 for the Genesis would have made total sense at the time in 1990.The original was released on a few consoles Master System,TG-16,PS1 had a compilation of Part 1 and 2 conveniently named R-Types even the Gameboy saw 2 release(regular and color)just not 2 of the major consoles of the time(NES, SNES)the SNES did have a renamed part 2 at launch and the awesome part three that came along a few years later.
It was because Nintendo paid for the console exclusive.

Excellent! The animation and the sound sure look accurate. R-Type on SMS was a huge lift to me. Irem mostly made NES games during that time, but Oh how i loved that SMS game. The Mega version will be a welcome addition, whether i can get my hands on a full version or just pay for the complete rom from those folks, its going to be an amazing trip. So glad you did this and showed your love by completely making the packaging and poster. You are the wizard! On another note: i just found out Panorama Cotton on Switch last night for $2.99. This is an absolute steal if you are into that game. Great time to still love retro, my ma-an!

I just tried it, it's awesome!!! Few problems. Shooting the force doesn't shoot it far enough. I usually shoot the force off against the level 1 boss, but it wasn't working properly. It just didn't go across the screen entirely, and kind of slowed down and stopped 3/4 of the way.
The re-spawn ability is much appreciated, but despite it saying it has invincibility frames, it doesn't appear to be the case.
Everything else is fantastic! The inclusion of the exclusive Master System level was a complete surprise! But a welcome one XD. Once the problems are fixed, this version is even better than the arcade version IMO.
Yeah, invincibility is missing at respawn, will be fixed in the next demo update. The force here is reacting to the boss tail so the tail can stop it and hit it a bit back. you have to shoot it around the tail and be positioned a bit back (to make it a bit more strategic). I also tweaked the control a bit so you can play using the beam button only and tap ity to fire repeatedly, so the shot only button is for who prefers autofire. All will be updated soon
It's a stunning demo and like you said a few niggles that should be easy to fix.

I played this demo recently and really enjoyed it. They are doing a fantastic job on it.
However, i hadnt noticed until you mentioned it that the infinite lives option makes you invulnerable to bullets. I wish that was a separate option as I'd like to have infonite lives but still have to practice avoiding bullets.

Yes I make it and yes I copied the demo to the PCB. When the full game is released I will swap out the demo for the game 👍

Yup but as a kid I had the Master System versions first, so as a kid I was expecting to see it on the MD when I moved over.

I played this heavily on my Amiga, and found the PC Engine version fantastic.
I used to go around my friend's house to play the Amiga version.
Another reason why the master system should've never been made, we could've gotten a arcade perfect version of this and Vigilante.

BTW- left you a comment on your 8bitdo mini controller video; where I explain having to sell my entire collection in 2013....coz life....certainly not at value (rare games including Keio flying squadron demo disc + full game....) - but not a mint condition set up, many, many, MANY miles and well worn/loved...
Alas the 8bitdo mini controller is hanging off my car interior mirror, and having my entire collection on my phone + all the arcades I ever dreamed of owning (14 year old me would not comprehend over 1000 games, not conversions, but running as meant too - and downloaded from "thin-air" [wifi] and all for Free!!!) - and using Bluetooth for the sound - thus my new gaming room is literally my car...the pad is great for convenience....today *and I really recommend this pad-
I now have/run a 8bitdo snk neogeo cd pad (copy of original but better fir longer wear) - basically with arcade microswitch d-pad ....
Again, absolutely awesome!!
Although not as convenient due to size and unable to hang on interior car mirror.. .

Now the only things remaining are a Gradius title and Salamander, even if its based on the simple Commodore 64 version.

I downloaded a rom hack for Super R Type snes that uses the sa-1 chip to use on an SD2SNES firmware 1.11.0. It runs with no show downs, like an Arcade version of the game. 😄

It's shocking R-Type never made it to the Genesis, the Genesis is known as for side scrolling schmups
I know. I think Nintendo had an exclusive deal for it. Nintendo tied up some of the best games as exclusives back then.
Wondering if the sound really used the megadrive sound chip? Seems to clear and crisp. Wish someone would remake Altered Beast as 8Meg or 16Meg cart.
This is captured straight from a MK1 Mega Drive through an OSSC. The sound you hear is what you get. Altered Beast needs something. I love the logo but hate the game. I got Golden Axe at launch and not Altered Beast, and when I finally got Altered Beast I was disappointed.

Hmm....I don't think IREM would glad about this well-made fan game for Mega Drive.
First, it is obvious to be sure that using without permission is illegal even its totally not commercial.
Second....Did They ever had sights of positive to Mega Drive, I guess. According to M2 which is famous and high-estimated for porting retro games into newest consoles and partly Steam, R-Type Leo was planned to be ported in Mega Drive or 32X but IREM rejected for some reason which no one but only they knows.
I just hope the project go smoothly.
IREM don't even take down the pirate games of R-Type. I doubt they will care about this. It would cost them more in legal fees.
