Can't wait for this. That "Stage 5" you were showing was actually the bonus stage from the Master System version. So glad that's in here. I hope they hide it the same way in stage 4 in the finished version. IREM lets others release stuff physically all the time these days. I'd love to see an official physical version of this.
Damn you, Joe! I actually didn't mention it and was waiting for someone to bring it up. Shoulda figured it'd be you. The music for it is in the player as well under Secret Stage.
Keep up the good work. And take your time. Don't rush anything. Like baking. it takes time. And a minor point- don't rush the music.!! Get it right- melodies, harmonies, drums, instruments. I'm not just taking about R Type... in taking all future games. Let your name be synonymous with quality
Loved the Master System version and truly felt it was a crime it never arrived on the Genesis/MD. IMO it’s better late then never and it’s mind blowing we’re finally being blessed with this beauty after all these years.
I don't know how to put this phenomenon into words but this actually "feels" like a Genesis game released from 30+ years ago with this games palette color choices and FM sound settings. They definitely put a lot of love and nostalgia into this one. 😄
Getting serious Mega Darius vibes from this project. If that got an official release via strictly limited and M2, then there is definitely some promise of a physical cart version of this project.
This is quite amazing looking! I've never been a huge shooter fan as I've just not been that good at them, but this is something I will want to pick up and play on my actual consoles when and if it gets a full release. Great stuff!
Been following the development of this for a while. So glad its close to getting released and looking so polished. The SMS version was the one I played bitd, and dispite the flickering , absolutely lived it. Felt like a complete champ when I discovered the secret stage! Glad its included in this version. The MD 100% deserved a port bitd.
This is seriously impressive. I always thought it was a criminal offense that the Mega Drive of all things never had R-Type in any capacity. I'm glad fans love it enough to undo some of history's injustices.
Now this is incredible! I'm a huge R-Type and Sega fan! I always would have loved to have seen R-Type appear on the Genesis. I'm not sure IREM's relationship with Sega back in the early '90s, but it is a shame the Genesis never got an R-Type of its own (until now). I am always impressed by the modding community! This seems like quite the passion project and seems to be shaping up nicely! IREM themselves couldn't have done a better job! I'm looking forward to playing it when it finally releases!
Irem themselves never developed a Master System or Genesis game; Sega licensed two Irem games, R-Type and Vigilante, and developed them in-house or handle the ports to another company (Compile did the Master System port of R-Type). Irem at the time developed games for Nintendo’s consoles and NEC’s TurboGrafx 16.
DYK: The PC Engine/TG16 version of R-Type was originally released in two parts in Japan (as R-Type Part I and R-Type Part II, not to be confused with its sequel, R-Type II) due to four megabit HuCards not being available at the time of its release? The US version was released on one four megabit HuCard.
@@BurritoKingdomAssuming there might have been a special deal for the 16bit consoles. SNES got Super R Type as a big early game. MS got R Type before that but the home computers like Amiga, Amstrad etc all got an outsourced version. So if for example Strider 2 via Tiertex made it to MD surely someone could of ported R Type unless a deal was in place
Huge fan or the SEGA Genesis/MegaDrivr homebrew scene - especially arcade ports of games we never got - but should have. After seeing stuff like this, as well as ports of arcade games like Shinobi, oh how I'd love to see the homebrew scene tackle ports of stuff like ... Alien Syndrome Shadow Dancer Arcade Moonwalker Arcade Quartet 4 Castlevania Rondo of Blood And so much more!
The retro community is just so damn amazing. Excited about this one! Can you do a comparison with it's brothers? I've never played any of them but always wanted to do curious how you think it stacks up.
Very impressive work, this was a game I enjoyed on the master system and was amazed by how good it was back then but this does look very enticing indeed.
Looks amazing! Sounds even better. And I love the interpretation of Compile's Master System special stage! If this could optionally have the extra presentation features from the PC Engine CD -ROM version, it may be the definitive R-Type! Something that may be of interest to hobbyist developers and R-Type fans alike is a free online book written by the programmer of the ZX Spectrum conversion. Look up 'It’s Behind You: The Making Of A Computer Game' by Bob Pape. It's not very long but it's fascinating to learn what he went through, and how the game was squished into such a relatively under-powered system.
I'm a big shooter fan, and I was always a little salty back in the day that the Genesis didn't get R-Type. When the Turbo dropped in price, I made sure to get one along with R-Type.
It's a project i didn't expect but welcome! Many memories of the game on the old Master system. (Also speaking on projects, i love how another person just went and brought over a version of Metal Gear to Saturn! Different aims but always appreciated!)
I can't believe that Irem never released a single game on SEGA Genesis/Megadrive (Except SMS) This is absolute criminal when they never released their games on the Genesis.
Wow R Type looks and sounds absolutely amazing on the Mega Drive, I can’t wait for it to be finished, I also can’t believe that the Mega Drive didn’t receive a port until now because this demo shows that the system is more than powerful enough to have handled a port of R Type.
As a kid I used to play R-type on my 1st console which was a Sega Master System. I really enjoyed it. Oh the good memories... I'm 47 today 😅 Thank you Sega Lord X 🙏
Thank you! that is nice; ould have love some comparison with existing and the arcade because it looks more like a master system stable version than an arcade port to me
Yes, Please! I'll take a physical copy if Irem let's them do it. With the quality that is apparent, let's hope it comes true. It would be a win, win, win.
This looks absolutely amazing!! I assume there will be a physical release. There havet been a lot of cool re-issues on high quality carts lately. The four Toaplan shooters (I manager tog snag Hellfire and Fireshark but missed out in Truxton and Zero Wing). That stuff like this R-Type plus ZPF and Metal Fury is coming out in now is so cool.
This looks really impressive. I just wish the R-Type series was more accessible so that I had a snowball's chance of seeing more than the first few stages without cheats.
@@davidaitken8503 I actually did that. The problem is once you lose a ship and your powerups are gone, from then on you die every 5-10 seconds and it's a terrible experience. The worst part of the arcade experience is its design to gobble up your money rather than offer a reasonable challenge like Einhander.
@@palaceofwisdom9448 True, there are spots like that. What makes you think this version won't be just as cheap and loaded with BS as the other versions? The truth is R-Type 3 is by far my favorite game in the series as it was built from the ground up as a console game. With the exception of stage 4 which can suck a d the game is mostly fair.

Game Sack and SLX, the crossover we love to see
Man, that music sounds amazing on Genesis's FM sound chip.
Hey it's Joe. I love your show.
Between this and the patch to speed up Super R-Type on the SNES there has been a lot of love given to this series. Always nice to see this!
Don't forget about the SuperGrafx reduced sprite flicker version that was released a while back!
R Type on the Master System is one of my favorites.
Thanks for this! It means a lot, specially as a big fan of your channel.
So glad to see you getting exposure!! Big fan of your dev work and R-Type!
Thank the rest of the team from the retrogamers! - This is looking fantastic 👍

I absolutely love R-Type, so I can't wait to get my hands on this demo! I love that it also seems to have the Master System exclusive stage!
It looks great and it makes me feel proud that the programmer was a fellow Italian. 😊
Kudos to the devs for including the secret hidden stage that was in the SMS version
This would be awesome to play on the Genesis! Can't wait to try it out!!
Looks fantastic. A physical copy would be amazing!
Cant wait for this and Earthion in the next year.
And zpt
Oh my goodness, the opening track to R-Type is so iconic, the MD arrangement sounds fantastic. Very excited to see the final game 😊
Wow I am really impressed with this because it is done by people that are not with some big company. It looks great!

I've been following the progress of this on Twitter. It's a truly amazing looking port. Amazing that fans can make such amazing games.
Glad you enjoyed this one! SEEEEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Thunder Force II will always have a very special place in my heart...right next to Sword of Vermilion.

Tragic someone left all this money on the table 30 years ago.
Irem was never a 3rd party licensee for the Genesis/Mega Drive. It would've been up to another publisher to license R-Type from Irem.

So looking forward to this .love it on most systems especially the amiga. Hopefully the demo gets made available for download soon
The amiga version was the only one I ever played until I got MAME... there's a small homage somewhere in this

love to see a port of R type leo arcade

Sega Genesis, Hard Rockin' Hair Metal & girls with no tattoos or purple hair - I miss those days!
R-Type and Final Fight on the MD, good times!
R-type Delta was my favourite.

Love R-Type. Had a copy for the Master System as a kid, still own and play a current port on PS3.
They need to do this with Rastan, or a Rastan metroidvania. The Amiga project looks amazing I'd love to see something like that on the Megadrive.
Aye, nice! I remember playing it on the snes when I was small. I'm going to check out your next vid on this game.👍😄
As a kid I used to play R-type on my 1st console which was a Sega Master System. I really enjoyed it. Oh the good memories... I'm 47 today 😅
Thank you Sega Lord X 🙏
If someone had told me i could play R-Type on a Genesis but i had to wait 35 years for it, I totally would have called them crazy.
I love your channel man.
Thank you! that is nice; ould have love some comparison with existing and the arcade because it looks more like a master system stable version than an arcade port to me
Looks beautiful!
Nice! That reminds me of the Shinobi demo somebody made a while back, it was really impressive, I wonder if they ever added the other levels..
Always found it strange that rtype never came to the MD in any form. It would have always been a perfect fit
Very nice, I played this to death when the original came out.
Goosebumps
Best R-Type soundtracks are found on the Amiga and the C64.
holy crap I am STOKED for this
