'Peking-to-Paris' Rally Prepped Datsun 240Z - (Street/Dirt) One Take

- Chris Bury and his father have spent the last year restoring and modifying their 1973 Datsun 240Z for the 10,000-mile, 37-day Peking-to-Paris Rally, one of the more hardcore vintage events that exists in all of motoring. The impeccably clean Z has full suspension, skid plates, off-road tires, and all the lighting, accessories, and safety systems one could ever ask for. And before Chris shipped the car off to China for the start of the rally, he invited us to meet him in the desert and take it for a little spin.

A majority of the chassis and assembly work was performed by John Coffey of Benton Performance, and the car and it's participation in the 2016 Peking-to-Paris is dedicated to his memory and hard work.

I don't even let anyone drive my 240Z, and it's a fraction of that ones value. So I would be quite paranoid.
If it had to do 10.000 miles nonstop shouldn't it be bulletproof enough that you wouldn't care how or by whom it was driven for an hour?
No offense but Matt is a professional driver who could write a check for this build no problem. You'd have to be kind of a lil bitch to be nervous about him of all people driving your car.

this guy is a hero! 240Zs was the car which got me into cars and this rally spec car is stunning.

mrniceguy67545 Did you watch the video? Kid was nervous as hell the whole time, telling matt to "watch out for that rock" every 2 seconds. He's going to have to get over it if he plans to go on a 2-month rally through the middle of nowhere. Half the participants are senior citizens driving much more expensive cars that are twice as old as that Z, so he's gonna need to grow some balls and get used to that car getting fucked up.

I always wanted to do a car like this with a chevy caprice when I was younger. Good cargo volume, better mileage then a full size truck, more comfort then a midsize, decent off roadish capability on a full frame and I wouldn't have to drive an S10. I gotta say this guy has a lot better taste then I did.

Love those old Z's. 280z was my first car.
Not long ago I joked with my mom saying I was going to track down her old 240 and turn it into a rally car. She was like "you'll never be able to take that thing off road".
I'm now thinking its time to prove her wrong!

One of rare rally events I would truly enjoy in participating. There are quite few 70s cars I would love to drive on that event. Like AR GTAs, or going crazy with some DeTomaso :)

the paved will be worse than the dirt - because there will be jagged pot holes.I had a 260z with the 2.8 but running 240 carbs through a janspeed stainless - sounded fabulous.
Damn, I'd love to drive that car across the country.
I would so rock an Alfetta GTV6. Hell if it stayed in one piece, I reckon it could do really well. But then again, a 1965 Giullia Sprint GTA 1600 would bring a tear to me eye. Wow man, the closest I have gotten to this is on Gran Turismo 4 with the Mille Miglia (Thousand Mile Race). The Chevelle and GTA were my absolute favorites. Chris is very fortunate. Good luck man.. Bring it home in one piece.

This thing is super cool and definitely outside the realm of what we usually see in these one-takes.
If I were mechanically inclined enough to take on an endeavor such as this, I totally would. In the very least these guys have inspired me to do something like this with my own Father. Though it may not involve restoring a 240, or building something from scratch, I would like to do something that requires the mind of both my Father and I to properly achieve what we set out to do.

Awesome build
I noticed that the Peking to Paris Rally has a marked amount of 240Zs in the running. In the 2016 video, there were at least a half a dozen. Must be the ideal platform for a JDM rally car.
Matt says '72, description says '73. I can't tell the difference, maybe the dash. Good luck to Chris and the support team. It would be wonderful if the Z won another rally. I would take even greater pride in my '73 Z.

Nice I was wondering about this car. I have a 71' 240Z and the rear disk conversion is a huge help in mountainous areas, the old drums fade. I don't have a bored out motor but I have triple carbs and it's matching numbers, orange. I want an LSD.
