Basicly silat is not self defense, its war technic sistem creat by Mahesa Anabrang Elite Division Commander from Singashari Kingdom and later on become Majapahit empire (both are ancient Javanese kingdom) call Kali (sansekerta word) and still used the origanally word in philipine while later on in Indonesia it self used term Silat from silaturahmi (islam influence means meet or to someone) so basiclly Kali, Kali Majapahit, Silat, Pencak Silat, Sundang its same thing Mongol know how it was, Once try conquer with 4000 ships to Java and never came back again. So when it come close range combat this sistem is roughly dangerous.

Even, the strong kingdom got obliterated. 4000 ships are ridiculous also. In the greatest naval era, Zheng He only had 100 ships. How the hell did the fast invasion of Mongol keep up creating a thousand ships? They got another region that needed to be taken also. You should check your information bro.
Silat was shown in small quantities in the likes of "Black belt Magazine" and "Kung Fu Magazine" in the late '80s early '90s and always seemed like a fascinating system. It wasn't until Iko Uais in "The Raid" that Silat became more globally displayed and recognised, but I also discovered a unique system of Silat as practiced, taught, and demonstrated by Australian Luke Holloway. The system Luke shows seems direct and effective in the empty hand arena, and his knife boxing is superb.❤😊
The first article on Silat in the USA was in the June 1965 issue of Black Belt. Magazine. There were several articles published throughout the 1970's it didn't just appear in the late 1980's it has a long but though not well known history in the United States.
Its Don Draeger from Black Belt Magazine who bring Silat to the world in early 70's. Several decades before, in Dutch colonial era, Silat is much more shrouded and practised underground (and disguised as an artistic/dance style). As the dutch saw it as a dangerous weapon for local resistence & their guerilla warfare system (as similar as happen in Phillipine with their kali/escrima under spanish colonial rule.)
The most effective concepts are typically not shared with the public. 40+ years under my belt and I had to label it Southeast Asian martial arts in order to enjoy my journey through the world of martial arts. Gotta remember that Westerners typically downplay or outright ban these styles. This was common in the 70s and 80s and it's still prevalent today.
yes, but Iko Uwais is making mistake. The art of killing is not supposed to show too openly like that. Some silat gurus do not like it. some of the technicque must keep secret until it's reavealead to kill. That's why it's called secret system

The video was very interesting and one can clearly see the typical fluidity of motion in your silat guru that only high level practitioners of their respective system typically reach. Hat off to guru darren, i as indonesian see no wrong in his presentation, just a small miniscule remarks. I really like how he understand the application of suliwa the way he use a triangle system. A bit p.s. Kujang is the exclusive weapon used in west java, not sumatera. Kerambit characteristics are the smaller the deadlier, since almost imposible to disarm or block. Celurit is a gardening tool to hack grass, used as weapon mostly in east java. Golok play really sleek, he understand it is mainly for finesse, just slice and slice no need power on it, hatt off. Great stuff. 100% of fights start standing. And that statement of 90% of fights end up on the ground doesn't mean both fighters. Your objective in a street fight or combat situation is for you to not go onto the ground but to knock your opponent onto the ground.
In Indonesia, all fights will end in multiple attackers and often with weapons. you drag down your opponent to the ground fighting means you're a deadman.
In the early 18th century on the island of Java there was a mass movement against Dutch colonialism, by a group of people led by Sunan Kuning. This group had extraordinary silat skills that could destroy armed Dutch soldiers in dozens of bases on the island of Java. This made the Dutch Afraid and finally the Dutch decided to share the area of power with other groups who also had troops equipped with great "silat" skills. and that successfully ended the episode of the sunan kuning movement. After that the Dutch had extraordinary respect for the Sultanate on the island of Java. and chose to share power with them, because the Dutch did not want the previous thing to happen again
Traditional silat and muay bhoram (muay thai as we know) are build us as fighters at battle field back at the day when kingdoms are everywhere at south east asia
Muay thai is more simple on defending & striking for people to learn, but silat is brutal and more complex to learn because they're fully martial art rather than just self defense like muay thai. You learn catching, striking, grapling, etc. At same time for the efficiency of positioning in self defense. For me muay thai is good for basic to learn self defense mindset. But getting expert you can choose for expanding your martial art mindset with silat. And for me the +poin of silat is catching & striking.

This video is absolute fire! Silat is super dangerous and the indonesians are ridiculously fast. Been waiting for this video, thanks!
Basicly silat is not self defense, its war technic sistem creat by Mahesa Anabrang Elite Division Commander from Singashari Kingdom and later on become Majapahit empire (both are ancient Javanese kingdom) call Kali (sansekerta word) and still used the origanally word in philipine while later on in Indonesia it self used term Silat from silaturahmi (islam influence means meet or to someone) so basiclly Kali, Kali Majapahit, Silat, Pencak Silat, Sundang its same thing
Mongol know how it was, Once try conquer with 4000 ships to Java and never came back again.
So when it come close range combat this sistem is roughly dangerous.
Silat is very brutal because it is meant for dead or alive situation.
@@bagoesogomNgawur dasar jawirrr, gk ada hubungannya sama jawirrr, Silat first existed in the Malay (Sumatra) and Sunda (Pasundan/Parahyangan, West Java) regions. Moreover, since when did the Mongols bring a fleet of up to 4000 ships?? Jawirrr
@@bagoesogom you wrote nonsense. Is there any source you could back up that silat is used to beat mongols? They just couldn't keep up without their horse cavalry.

His videos are great for sure!
That's why it's called secret system

correction:
- kujang is a traditional weapon of sundanese (native western java).
- kerambit is a conceal weapon.most of silat styles won't show their kerambit in front of their opponent.
Yes he meant the kerambit in Silat is concealed. Was just a flub and no way to edit it

as an indonesian, i would say that keris dagger is more often used for a dark magical ritual by shamans (may they be damned) than a close-combat-poisoning fightings. but occasionally, it also used for a wedding ceremonial, yet also to show someone’s status back then (such a kings, sultans, or known figures)
true. most of shaman who practiced black magic, they use keris/kriss dagger for ritual purposes in Nusantara area region (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and South Filiphines or Southern Thai)
17:13 the first weapon is called kujang originally from west java(sunda land), the second one is kerambit(tiger's claw) it's origin from Sumatra (padang) then spread along other regions.

I am Indonesian and have stopped many world martial arts, but our love for silat is a martial art inherited from our nation's ancestors which contains many good philosophies. So you don't just train yourself as a fighter, but you hone your soul so you can stand on the truth
What do you think of Silat! Let me know!
The video was very interesting and one can clearly see the typical fluidity of motion in your silat guru that only high level practitioners of their respective system typically reach. But after all there are too many aspects that I think would likely not stand the test of a truly aggressive and violent opponent (the goal to intentionally engage in short range fighting with long range weapons, blade blocking behind back, etc.)
@@wiezumteufel9024 it’s a demo of the system. They have much simpler movements and more complex ones as well. It’s meant to show the uniqueness of the system

big respect for the Guru! but want to straighten out a little information that the "Kujang" weapon does not come from Sumatra but comes from the Sundanese tribe in West Java 16:59

Great stuff.
100% of fights start standing. And that statement of 90% of fights end up on the ground doesn't mean both fighters. Your objective in a street fight or combat situation is for you to not go onto the ground but to knock your opponent onto the ground.
Exactly

Great share!
Thank you
Muay thai is more simple on defending & striking for people to learn, but silat is brutal and more complex to learn because they're fully martial art rather than just self defense like muay thai. You learn catching, striking, grapling, etc. At same time for the efficiency of positioning in self defense.
For me muay thai is good for basic to learn self defense mindset. But getting expert you can choose for expanding your martial art mindset with silat. And for me the +poin of silat is catching & striking.
