That’s quite often the way: the most imposing villains are often played by the kindest souls in the business. Just a shame that sometimes unfortunately you get the opposite: kind-hearted heroes/heroines played by people who in real life have a penchant for treating other people (including the likes of supporting cast and crew) like dirt.

I'm not sure if it comes across in the English translation, but in Indonesian language, his choice of words and way of speaking are very humble despite his achievement. It's very calming yet inspiring to hear him explaining about Pencak Silat and his experience getting involved in blockbuster movies.

3:10 I really like it when he said of silat as being the heritage of Nusantara (the region encompassing the countries in most of Maritime Southeast Asia). It shows how humble he is in recognizing the shared legacy of silat in the region. The subtitle somehow translated it as Indonesia though.
As a fellow silat practitioner in Malaysia, it pleases me that the martial arts of my people are getting recognized globally, though I wish the movie producers in Malaysia would do more to promote our shared culture through movies, instead of just focusing on stale but profitable movie themes.

I took a seminar with this legend. What people don't know is how STRONG he is. His arm was like steel. He really knows his martial arts. One of the rare cases where someone is WAY better off camera than what you see in the movies. He's the real deal

@@KINGJAPAN12 I don't know much about the other 3 before they became an actor. But for Cecep, he's a Pencak Silat athlete also teacher for a long time before he became an actor
I took Silat for a few years when I was younger (KunTao not Pencak), and I can tell he's real deal. My instructor (Guro at the time) had very similar structure and veins as this guy. Arms feel like steel poles. When I blocked his strikes it still hurt. When he blocked my strikes it hurt even more.
From what I remember, he said if you really want to condition your legs and arms then you grab a pair of arnis sticks (kamagong is best, but fire hardened rattan works, too) and you roll those up and down your forearms, ulna and shins for a few minutes every day. I tried it again a couple years ago and was like, 'Nope! I got too soft for this.'
His stretches are very reminiscent of what we did as well.
@@ryanshannon7703 This is the same shin training in Muay Thai, this is called bone conditioning, you literally break your bones and watch it harden over time, the dead bone tissues gets layered up with new ones that strengthens its defense and offense. When I took Muay Thai lessons, we use to train our calf kick on thick wooden poles for 30 minutes, until our leg were sore from all that low and calf kick training on a wooden pole.
Then I left, since I found ITF Taekwondo more enjoying, and I wanted to improve on my flexibility, mixing martial arts are actually enjoying and the sparring really gives me a good workout and experience. From this day I still condition my forearms and shin with my arnis.
@@Adim0413 That's excellent that you are still participating in the arts, and more so that you're able to adapt your existing knowledge with a completely different system. My instructor was very open to mixing up your techniques from different arts to apply the best 'solution' to a given encounter. I remember he used to teach me some of the basic animal kung fu styles (primarily tiger due to the style of blocks and how the strikes work well with Silat movements and attack lines) off to the side. When I felt a movement was too unnatural or maybe wasn't as effective as it could he would often tell me, 'think about other movements you can do and what position you want to be in. How do you get there? Once you know what each movement does, you can apply something else however you want! Don't ever feel like you're boxed into a specific movement. If it works, it works.'
A few years ago I tried sparring with my friend for the first time ever in boxing (he was doing regular training and I never trained boxing in my life) and the first straight right he threw I instinctively caught it with a hand trap and pulled him in closer to knock him off balance for a counter. I didn't throw the counter because it felt so weird with big @ss boxing gloves on. My friend was struggling to break free and asked what I was doing. I just told him sorry, force of habit. It was at that point I realized boxing *wasn't really* for me. It's fun for cardio though.

Some people who thought they are way ahead with moden technologies and cultures, felt like old cultures are irrelevant. And it goes both ways. Some who are too conservative felt like modern technologies and cultures are just distractions and are only here to destroy the beauty in the old ones.
But the sentiment that this teacher carries just shows how he doesn't critisize one or the other. Rather, he works to preserve the beauty in old traditions and keeps developing with new culture for the sakes of the future. It's truly beautiful

Do not focus on the finger or you will miss all the heavenly glory. Attacks/defense techniques="the finger".
Becoming the best version of your self gaining all the valuable traits, skills, and caracter development to deal with anything/everything in life. (Life lessons) that is "the heavenly glory". In martial arts you learn to defeat your only true enemy in life yourself.

The moment one starts thinking in terms of passionate judgements, the perfect practice gets interrupted.

Keanu is always the first on set for martial arts training and the last to leave he puts in more hours of training than any actor to make it as realistic as possible. He's a legend.
Congratulation for becoming a superb actor and martial artist. Can't stop watching you fight in the raids 2 the ending fight was just perfection. You truly found your way with the Pancak Silat martial arts that is really inspiring.
What he said is true. When you are skilled in martial arts you will most likely do whatever is possible to avoid fighting. Those who are great fighters can cause irreparable damage to a regular person.
Realistically speaking, a great fighter is more likely to leave you less harmed than a novice. More people die in drunken brawls than they do in the ring, and the guys in the ring are actively trying to incapacitate other. All it takes is a single punch to knock somebody unconscious, and if they hit their head on the way down, they die. It happens all the time. Many techniques you seen in movies don't work, you can't snap peoples arms or legs with strikes, and you can't instantly kill someone either. To break someone's limbs or seriously injure them (outside of an accident) you have to have intent to do so.
Being a good fighter allows you to be confident fighting, because you know you won't hurt somebody. I'm definitely not the best out there, but very fight I've ever experienced where I knew I was better from the get go, so I would simply go for a guillotine (standing or otherwise), or try and take the back for a rear naked choke. These are really effective, and easy to get on people who don't know what they are doing. Basically you have control of their body, and if they keep trying to fight, you simply tighten the choke and let them understand they need to calm down. I don't throw punches, and I'm comfortable facing down most people. You should avoid intentionally fighting, but you shouldn't give in to whatever someone does to avoid it either.
You should avoid fighting because you can always get injured, if someone puts their hands you though you need to be aggressive, worrying about the other person is counterproductive if you know how to fight. The aim is always to protect yourself, you do what you have to do so that you are safe. The only time someone gets hurt is if you are pushed to your limit (e.g. one or two people with an intention of causing you serious harm) or if you don't know what you are doing. Sometimes having a reputation as someone not to mess with can stop other incidents down the line.
I have avoided fights because at the moment of truth I looked so confident and self-assured they got scared and backed down and went away. Now that’s true martial arts.
Not to fight to gain your interest is higher martial arts.

@@AveSicarius Not true, a skilled fighter will blow you away in a street fight to teach you a lesson. The reason why we don't see too many deaths in the ring is because BOTH fighters tend to be skilled and prepared to take punishment

Because that's an aspect Western producers are looking for when they're casting an Indonesian: martial arts skill. They don't need Reza Rahardian or Iqbal whatever-his-name-is, they have their own version but better. Not so much with martial artists.
As Indonesian, i love the fact he used the word "Nusantara", instead Indonesia. (Despite "Nusantara" is being translate as "Indonesia" in the subtitle).
Pencak Silat has been around before the countries in the region. Pencak Silat is a culture, a legacy. It belongs to the people, especially those who practise them. It doesnt belong to any nations/countries.

@Pedro Silveira every pencak silat performer do that kind of effect when practicing daily. its not breathing technique. he claps his part of body/arms to make that sound. you cant see it because its too fast

this is why people who know about street fighting always bring a pen or pencil with them, it's useful for fighting and its not actually a weapon yet it's small you can hide it with your hands.
