Word of advice from an editor who works at a publishing house: YOU DO NOT NEED AN AGENT. (Particularly in this case, but also in general.) An agent's job is to find creators and sell their work to publishers. They can be good if you have no contacts in the publishing industry. But if you already have an in, or your book is already published, all an agent will do is take 15% of your royalties forever. But what about editing? Agents are NOT professional editors. While they do sometimes perform editing, it's usually to make a work more approachable for a publisher prior to submission. If you want an editor who will genuinely improve your writing, then hire a professional editor. But what if dealing with the publisher is scary, and you want to make sure you get a fair contract from them? Then talk to a contract lawyer! It's a misconception that agents have any legal training whatsoever, so if you need someone to look over your contract and ensure that it is not 1. giving away your IP, 2. going to lock you into producing sequels, or 3. overall parasitic and bad for your interests (which big publishing contracts often are, because their goal is to make money, not promote you) then please talk to a lawyer before signing. To conclude, an agent is not necessarily a bad route, particularly if you have no experience with the publishing world at all. They can be a good friend and guide, and they can shop your book around to publishers for you (though don't expect them to make the best possible deal - they'll usually take the quickest and easiest). My advice would be to talk to an agent casually to learn the ropes of the publishing world, but you don't need one to sell your book for you. In the case of "Unfamiliar", Haley's online following already did what an agent would have done. In most other cases, unless you already have some success and following, agents won't touch your work because it will be too unique and unknown. They may even want you to change it so it's easier to sell. The rule of the traditional publishing world, including agents, is "make money first". For all of you aspiring authors and artists, there is an alternate path in either indie publishing or self publishing. I've been following Unfamiliar since page 4 or 5 in Tapas and I feel very happy for you beeing able to publish it!! I've always wanted to publish a comic too so I understand the feeling you descrive in the video (maybe one day I'll get the time to actually draw it hahaha).
I remember seeing Paolini by hapistance going to hastings to rent a movie, just the dorkiest teen imaginable standing at a table by himself, nobody else was there for his book signing. Important to note, even if you are getting self-published, you should NEVER pay to get published. Pay an artist for your cover or an editor to check your work, sure. But paying a publisher to self-publish is called vanity publishing, and it's a scam. Vanity publishers have no interest in you selling your book and making money because they already made their money when you paid them. You will pay a fortune for a cheap, rubbish print run and you won't make your money back. Legit self-publishing studios will take a percentage of your earnings on each sale. That way they're motivated to help you sell books too!
