being sporty and 'manly' you'd prob be out in the sun while the petite frail woman stays inside and does 'feminine' tasks that dont involve her getting tan. Everything's so stupid man
Yep, that’s another interesting phenomenon with how we perceive masc/fem, and it’s got some historical roots. Having a darker shade of skin was considered “masculine” because, in white men, it was achieved by working in the sun a lot, usually by manual labor, something generally perceived as masculine. Being pale was considered feminine because it was achieved by white women by staying out of the sun (like by staying in the house or confining your work to shade) through housework or careful protection, like with parasols. It all kind of ties into the masc = manual labor and fem = housework narrative. Unfortunately, that belief was also used to discriminate against POC women, as people would accuse them of being “too masculine” simply for having darker skin. The origin of our perceptions of masculinity and femininity are very saddening but also fascinating to learn about.
Lol, my characters very often look like this.. I don’t know why, but drawing a cute little short guy standing next to a cool beefy woman is just my favorite thing to do recently. Heck, my main OCs fall into this trope-
Literally tho! a pair of my ocs are just 'Golden Retriever Gf who's strong as hell' and her 'Black Cat Bf who's the one being picked up'. With her being very masc and the bf being more feminine!

Same lmao. I have two characters that are twins, one male and one female, and the guy is more feminine and the girl is masc. Both are the same height, which would make the girl seem really tall.
As a tiny girl who's been mocked by others (mostly guys) for looking like a kid, I legitimately cannot begin to believe that my height is now considered a beauty standard... Kinda speaks of how randomly and abruptly these things tend to change!
I'm kinda short, but I've never been bullied for it, because I'm scary. I always joke that people should fear the short, because they're closer to crotch punching height.
where is being short/petite seen as a beauty standard?? i always see tall/average and curvy being a beauty standard....(or like when people say short they mean 5'2 or 5'1.. which isn't really short 😭)
i think its because masculine features are socially acceptable for all guys and girls, but feminine features are seen as "girls and gays only", like a subtle form of misogyny
I find both attractive 😭 but it's probably cause im pan and don't care what a person "was born with" or how they identify if you know what I mean djajjd
Its kind of weird how humans have vastly different beauty standards for men and women that even other animals would think is weird. Typically in the animal kingdom males are very colorful to attract mates. But for humans that is reversed.
Yea the standards for beauty has changed a lot even just completely normal things that just about every living thing has have been made taboo to talk about
This kinda does show that features that define male and female appearances aren’t just as a result of societal view. I hear so many people say it’s just because of society, that you associate certain features with male and female.
@@kitkat8669It's not even the bisexuality question, I think the more noticeable thing is finding men and women who are very gender non-conforming very attractive. I personally identify as queer/bisexual because it applies but I am most attracted to androgynous and gender non-conforming people which is interesting to notice in yourself
To me, gender non conforming people regardless of gender identity are incredibly attractive. Like I can see how people like masc guys and fem girls, but what are essentially tomgirls and femboys as well as androgynous people are so much more intriguing lol
@@antlerthyme oh shit, same!! Androgynous ppl are so fucking attractive, it's really a shame that I don't live in a place where it's safe for people to look like that :(
The funny thing is, they actually were like this once. Historically, men used to wear heels, wigs, makeup, gowns, and stuff that nowadays is seen as feminine and girly while women wore things that are considered traditionally masculine today. Funny how much those standards have changed.
This is something I've observed when it comes to comments I get on my very pale/porcelain skin tone; I've had some people ask me how I kept my skin so fair and clear when they liked the look of very fair skin (which often aligned with the standards from their countries) and that's always a stark contrast with the ones here in Western Europe, where being tan is usually seen as the attractive standard; and where it's common for people to use tanning beds to achieve that while other countries do the opposite by bleaching their skin (both of those methods can be harmful though and I don't think there should be as much of a pressure to change one's natural skin tone, I'm all about embracing it instead!)
Not true for all body types (for example, overweight is hated everywhere) and knowing that you wouldn't get bullied on some other continent doesn't help those people either.
that thing you said about posing and stances and how it’s considered ‘masculine’ to be “open” in your stance and take up more space while it’s ‘feminine’ to emphasise your petiteness, look as slender possible and fit as compactly into space as possible was. wow. really eye-opening. it’s so commonplace it doesn’t even register as something worth questioning, but it does reflect so much about societal expectations of masculinity and femininity.
As a trans person comments like this are so fascinating. Something I have to put conscious effort to do every moment of my life to be seen how I want to be seen not even being acknowledged by most people is wild It really goes to show how brainwashed we all are by beauty standards
I'm glad you did this! I have more "masculine attractiveness" than I do feminine traits. I'm tall, almost 6", broad shoulders, large muscles, chiseled jaw, tall nose, defined brow-bone, and large hands. These attributes have always made me feel less worthy and less beautiful than any other girl. I've learned that beauty standards suck and I'm okay with how I look now.
really? i thought the expectation for women these days were to have large thighs, big butts and a big back, broad shoulders and slim waist. Also hairless.
I dont think most people dont know this. Its obvious Patriarchy affects everyone. If women are expected to be docile and weak and in need of protection, Men are expected to be the opposite of that: strong and stoic. Womens emotions arent taken seriously, while Men arent allowed to show any emotion except Anger and Lust because its "feminine". This is just Feminism 101 at this point. Theres still much more to it. And I havent gotten into intersectionality because that'll take too long, but you get my point.
@@Milk-ck1wv I would want to agree but I argue too often with too many people online about the very fundament of sexism and how it even exists… (some people do in fact still not "believe" in sexism or play it down by alot)

@@amiable_monster People can just have physical preferences that they genuinely just find most attractive that are different from the societal standard. The same way that people who like women can be attracted to masculine presenting women regardless of their personality (i.e., not expecting them to be dominant or assertive), people who like men can like more feminine ones without it being about fear/distrust towards the opposite. I am OBSESSED with your "Guydeals" woman!! I feel we as a society have been starved of women like this in media, which is exactly why I draw them so much, *especially* in my web comic. The mentor of the comic is a middle-aged, buff, motherly woman, and the main character is a fem who starts off fit and grows more toned as the story progresses. There's also a masculine enby that dresses in a feminine way, and they're dating a muscular goddess of a woman whom herself is probably the most feminine and girly person in the entire story. Point being, "hot" comes in many different forms, and I want to see more variations aside from "Buff, manly guy" and "Small, cute girl". I especially want more old badasses. GIVE ME WARRIOR GRANDMAS PLEASE!! EDIT: Wow, this is getting more traction than I thought it would. For those curious, the comic is called Crossing Worlds on webtoon. The link is in my channel bio! :D
this video really shows how the world collectively views both men and women and the subconscious standards that are in place. I've never seen someone do a video like this, so this was a really interesting and fun watch, thank you!
This is also a good example of how one can mix and match if you're looking for a more androgynous look. Formfitting clothing but open/aggressive stance, bulky clothes but closed stance, deliberately chiseled features but fem clothes, etc. This was a really cool vid!!
There's actually a Game called Trials in tainted space were there is a race called the Kaithrit. They have extreme sexual dimorphism where the females are massive muscular and the dominant gender and the male are small, petite and feminine. Despite the fact they are highly advanced they males barely have rights and are considered to emotional to partake in politics at the same time they are extremely cuddled by their society.
All these videos about women being “beautiful” brings to the light how the male view has really warped female beauty standards, as a woman it just feels creepier the deeper you look anyway, your videos are always a joy, lavendertowne! love ur art!
And yet the moment anyone, regardless of their own gender or age or sexuality, calls out how close the beauty standard for women gets to creepiness towards kids...they respond as if you're delusional. Like, sure bro. Desiring a hyperspecific type of woman that is essentially a child "but legal" is weird. There's nothing wrong with a shorter woman or a woman who shaves/naturally has less body hair, there's a problem with YOU. They need to stop expecting all women to look like preteens, especially when it comes to Asian women...leave them alone asian people are not fetish fuel replacements for children. Weirdos.
as a pansexual this video is an absolute win also i love these characters sm😭😭your real for not wanting them as romantic interests though they totally give off more cousin vibes
there was this book i read a few years ago "The Handsome Girl and Her Beautiful Boy" that this reminds me so much of this idea unfortunately my parents found out about how fruity it was and took it away when i didn't know 😭 ill just buy a new one but it was a really silly little book
Especially the ones north of the Danube and east of the Rhine. They were exceptionally fair, and their blonde hair and blue eyes were of celestial appeal
@tomokokurokiirl I mean the standards for heterosexual relationships have usually been masculine man and feminine woman or masculine man and androgynous woman. I think crossing taht line and letting masculine women date feminine men is a good change, i wouldnt say it changes nothing. When I was a kid I didnt differentiate gender so I always believed for ages that women and men were exactly equal in the relationship and that feminine men and masculine women were a normal couple to exist. Femininity is hated, thats why women can be masc and still be seen as cool (until she doesnt shave or wear mkaeup then she is looked down upon) but men cant be fem without people being cruel about it. Having a Masculine woman (aka a tomboy/ mascgirl) dating a feminine man (aka a femboy/tomgirl) should be more normalized. I've been attracted to feminine men for ages and back when I was identifying as a woman, that was frowned upon and people got mad at me for "tkaing the gay men away" even though I wasnt. but after I transitioned to a guy now Its seen as a normal thing in the queer community.
Well most trans women and femboys like themselves looking androgynous and that's usually before puberty...so it's less so of a baby thing and more avoiding gender specific features... Plus baby is cute not every one like sexy eye candy some just like wholesome and cute...
On a character design level I noticed by myself and my artist friends that artists tend to draw body types and some details specifically as how they themselves look. For example, I get critic sometimes that legs and arms of my characters look weirdly long sometimes, which is a result of using myself as reference and just being a very lanky guy. It is super interesting
since haley is EVER so good at warning about such instances, I'm checking the comments before i hit play from now on because i don't trust like that. thank you for warning others so that they may be more fortunate than us
This might be one of my favorite videos you’ve done! Also I agree, whenever you feel down about yourself, it’s good to remember that beauty standards are always different over times and locations. I learned that when I moved to Japan and some of the features I hated for not fitting into American beauty standards became traits my friends always found most pretty. Beauty is subjective. ☺️

It wasn't mentioned but it's very interesting that the female character with "guydeals" is darker overall and the guy with "girlspectations" is lighter overall. This is actually something I drew for a homemade comic back in high school, I wanted to make an idealized couple who got together, but the guy was the most feminine and the girl most masculine. I kinda miss those characters, I need to find those characters again, it'll take me a while to find those old sketches.
Now for the twist, the girl is actually suuuuper into cute stuff and cant say no to her cute kohai, he lets her try out cute makeup styles that she feels like she cant wear cuz of her face (but once the guy tries it out on her she looks really good with it) and they both go on a slushie date all dressed up and with makeup and they both slay (i will now think about these two for forever)

When she startedd talking about posture, the first thing I thought of was throwns (cus I read a lot of fantasy novels with people sitting in throwns on the cover, and I like drawing them), like if theres a queen or whatever, even when she looks super haughty/proud, with her chin high, shoulders back, etcetera, the legs are usually crossed, aka taking up less space than even just having them resting normally, and the guys are almost always manspreading, and another thing is they usually look more relaxed than the ladies.
this is such an interesting idea. not only does it showcase the insane beauty standard of women in US culture but also the guys. who seem to be less talked about (I say this as an afab person don't attack me lmao) I really enjoyed this video!!
Oh yeah, facial hair (a very typically masculine trait) is a huge turn off for me. Facial hair is good on guys I wouldn’t be romantically interested, eg guys way older than me, family members, friends etc
There's actually a YA book called The Handsome girl and her Beautiful Boy that looks at this, and it's a bit of a trip lol. And it's one of those things I've never regularly seen in literature Also talking about buff women always makes me think of Karlach from BG3 lol, which I love she's the best 😂
I'd be super interested in seeing a redesign for the guy character and how you tweak him! Both of them are really fun, but when you said "I'm not satisfied with him, I might tweak him" it IMMEDIATELY made me think "wait really? Oh shoot, so what WILL you be satisfied with? What are you thinking?" and now I'm so curious to see a "final" design!! :D
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! Lavender, this is a brilliant idea. Completely reversing these norms of what we expect and showcasing that these beautify expectations are unrealistic, and that there is something so handsome/beautiful about a man/woman who is simply beyond what we ask for as a society in America is great. This is so fun! But one thing I do have to mention is that the title made me think you were going to literally reverse the ideals (eg. Clear skin - acne). Like, it would be so cool to take this same list and design some characters with the reversed expectations of their gender!
As a femboy, this whole video made me so happy. Gender norms are the weirdest things, and it makes me so glad that they’re getting addressed. I hope we can get to the point where everyone can just be how they want without judgement. For me, thigh highs are hella cute and I don’t just want to have to wear them underneath pants so I don’t get weird looks…
SLAY!! I (a quite feminine girl) really like feminine men, or just cute/pretty guys in general. If a man wants to wear more stereotypically feminine clothes, that’s just as valid as a man wanting to appear more masculine. Same goes for women of course. If someone’s not into masculine girls or feminine guys that’s fine, everyone has their own tastes and preferences! As long as someone isn’t walking down the street naked, everyone should just mind their business.
@@terdragontra8900 Honestly, it's hard because there are very few examples of feminine male characters. I guess looking at men in other cultures could be helpful, especially if male beauty standards elsewhere are closer to our female beauty standards. K-pop is a potential place for inspiration due to the hairlessness and very well-kept skin. However, they are usually incredibly toned and wear traditionally masculine clothing. I think Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is good for inspiration if you mostly look at part 4 and later. It's just about the only think I've seen that lets the male characters dress in very "feminine" clothing that still looks like it was designed for a male body. Honestly, I have the same struggle too sometimes, and I wish people were more creative in terms of creating "feminine" clothing that looks like it was designed for a male body in a way that doesn't feel like a joke or anything.
@@crashb800 This is maybe a bizarre thing to say, but I don’t really have interest in dressing or acting feminine, I want to act freely without any regard to what we’ve associated with either sex, and I don’t want to be expected to act like a guy in a relationship. But maybe I’m just super lazy. Are there men who dress feminine not because they innately want to but as, like… advertisement?
@@terdragontra8900 No, I don't think there are guys trying to be femboys based on advertisement. If I did, I would personally be a lot happier, but it honestly sucks feeling like your relationship options are either lead or no relationship. I don't honestly know how that will change until girls are really socially allowed to be the ones approaching.
I love the handsome girl, making girls less stereotypical and small is something I really like. Characters with opposite features than their gender would stereotypically have, is something I find incredibly attractive and unique.
ohhhhhhhhhhh my gosh. I, uh, I know you weren't explicitly making this this about trans bodies, but this is very related to my experience as a trans woman. I do my best to present and conform to feminine standards, but seeing that girl with shoulders wider than her hips was a powerful thing. I really and deeply wish more artists would do this sorta thing intentionally, not as a joke , but as an exercise to present other body types. all to say, thank you thank you thank you. also daaaaaaaaaang he's soooo prettyyyyy!!!
traits I find genuinely stunning: -unique noses (dorsal bumps, big noses, etc) -hip dips -moles or freckles (especially LOTS of them) -braces (they bring out smiles) -broad shoulders on women and narrow on men -soft jaws -body hair on women (especially when it’s dark) -ginger or white lashes that are hard to see or short ones -scars -teeth gaps and buck teeth -frizzy hair -acne there’s so much more. if you hate a trait about yourself please remember there’s 100% someone out there who’s attracted to it or wishes they had it too. don’t beat yourself up about things you can’t control ❤

Ya know what I think is kinda funny, how people want tiny soft women and super tall sharp men but if those two have kids they are more likely to end up being in the middle of those two poles, especially with facial features. Although this may vary a bit more with height.
I think it's kind of funny that when you switch the mainstream beauty standards for men and women, you get the kind of people that tend to be really attractive to certain subcultures (particularly queer folks like me!) Yep, that’s another interesting phenomenon with how we perceive masc/fem, and it’s got some historical roots.

Its kind of weird how humans have vastly different beauty standards for men and women that even other animals would think is weird. Typically in the animal kingdom males are very colorful to attract mates. But for humans that is reversed.
It's kind of specific to U.S beauty standards.
I have been thinking that too
Yea the standards for beauty has changed a lot even just completely normal things that just about every living thing has have been made taboo to talk about
This kinda does show that features that define male and female appearances aren’t just as a result of societal view. I hear so many people say it’s just because of society, that you associate certain features with male and female.

I like how every place has different beauty standards because even if you aren’t considered the beauty standard here you definitely are somewhere else

I dont think most people dont know this. Its obvious Patriarchy affects everyone.

As a femboy, this whole video made me so happy. Gender norms are the weirdest things, and it makes me so glad that they’re getting addressed.
@@CorvidayWolfy ok, but what am I supposed to do if feminine clothes look dumb on me cuz I’m 6ft tall with a square jaw? :(
@@terdragontra8900 Honestly, it's hard because there are very few examples of feminine male characters.
Honestly, I just read your response on a very surface level, and I think I get what you are saying now. Honestly, I struggle a lot with the expectation of leading in a relationship (I assume that's what you mean by not wanting to act like the guy in a relationship), and unfortunately, I don't know really how to deal with that.
Ayyy that’s a cool idea

@@kumoric hell yeah
traits I find genuinely stunning:
-unique noses (dorsal bumps, big noses, etc)
-hip dips
-moles or freckles (especially LOTS of them)
-braces (they bring out smiles)
-broad shoulders on women and narrow on men
-soft jaws
-body hair on women (especially when it’s dark)
-ginger or white lashes that are hard to see or short ones
-scars
-teeth gaps and buck teeth
-frizzy hair
-acne
there’s so much more. if you hate a trait about yourself please remember there’s 100% someone out there who’s attracted to it or wishes they had it too. don’t beat yourself up about things you can’t control ❤
The fact that you literally described me (apart from ginger/white lashes and frizzy hair)!
Thank you for appreciating eyelashes that are hard to see 😭😭
hip dips, freckles, broad shoulders, different colored lashes, and frizzy hair are the cutest features ever oh my god
I remember when I was watching your videos when I were in middle school watching the videos about art school. Now I’m an art student studying visual arts in a university. You were always and still are my favorite youtuber.
Ya know what I think is kinda funny, how people want tiny soft women and super tall sharp men but if those two have kids they are more likely to end up being in the middle of those two poles, especially with facial features. Although this may vary a bit more with height.
I think it's kind of funny that when you switch the mainstream beauty standards for men and women, you get the kind of people that tend to be really attractive to certain subcultures (particularly queer folks like me!) I find both characters more attractive than their mainstream counterparts. Your male character here is basically how I want to look too lol, I'm a proud member of the femboy army
