My first webcomic was called Reinvention, a slice-of-life story about a rich kid who ended up in a homeless shelter and ends up becoming a completely different person. I dropped it after three chapters, mainly because I discovered the endless scroll format just wasn't for me.
After that ended, I drew some one shots, entered some contests, and now I'm getting revved up to try a new story I've been sitting on for five years! This time fitting the tastes I discovered while drawing one shot comics

A MESSAGE FOR STAR!!! I really hope you read this.
So I've been reading your webcomic for a few weeks now, and I LOVE IT. I wanted to thank you for making it, but not just in the normal old "oh thanks for making this becuase it looks pretty and I love the storyline!" way. Well, that too. But I wanted to thank you for writing Vector the way he is.
He really resonates with me. I have severe anxiety and agoraphobia, and these things make me feel like I'm dying when I'm in a crowd or meeting new people. I read this webcomic and thought to myself, "hey, Vector's got the same problems as me!"
It really means a lot to see myself represented in such a powerful way, and through a media I love. So, thank you Star. Thank you for making me feel seen

I'm working on a comic called 'Marionette'. Its gaslight fantasy (steampunk with magic). The title has a lot to do with it as my main themes revolve around being controlled and used as a puppet. The first part of the comic is going to focus on a murderer known as the puppeteer who hangs their victims by the hands and legs resembling a puppet 😤

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for everything you do, Star! You were one of the many few inspirations for me starting my webcomic series. It's still in it's infancy, but I do already see massive progress on both my art style and consistency, but also my pacing! It's not an easy task, and there are many moments of burnout and heartache along the way... that's one of the harder pills to swallow when it comes to comic making, and I am just now learning that it's a common, and very human thing.
I guess, all of this to say, I am most inspired by your persistence and determination to make something cool that you liked, and pushed through all of the hardships to keep it going even today! That takes a lot of dedication and focus, and you've come so far in your journey! I'm proud of you, even if it is weird, me being a stranger from another corner of the world-wide web. :P

Love the video! Its crazy to see how long and bumpy castoffs rise is!! Ive been in the works jumbling ideas for my own comic, its about a team of mercenaries who work for the steampunk state, are given their hardest mission ever; being to assassinate the King of the utopic futuristic rival country. With each member having their own disability (blind, deaf, and mute) they uncover more and more dark secrets about their own state as they struggle to carry out the mission. Most of the characters are based off birds because i have an unyielding passion for birds, and I swear its a lot more detailed than how i said it. Its an idea that feels like a dream, and im unsure about how much do I actually dedicate to this idea. But seeing your channel gives me inspiration, I even got your book lol. Because I wanna become a better artist and just make something me and many other people could enjoy and love

The story takes place a year after the massacre and they would meet Emily and Eddie. God, I love hearing the origin story of your own comic! It gives me a lot of motivation/inspiration for my own story that has been sitting around doing absolutely nothing.
I'm thinking of just going full mixed media at this point as no single medium seems to keep my attention for very long. I also love how ours has very similar origins being in dreams, at this point I've kinda made it a thing where most of my dreams that I remember are basically canon since they actually seem to have some sort of plot? All I need to do is fill in the blanks and I've got a story!

Y'know, what I appreciate the most about this whole thing is knowing how long it takes you to do this, even though technically, this is your job, around 5 years in your head or with just rough drafts, and now 7 years actually making the polished version. I've had a story in my head for 2 years now, don't have art for it except the design of the main character, and I thought I've taken too long. I haven't realized how much I need to change the way I look at this. This is a journey, a passion project, heck, if it was a life-time project, who cares? I should be excited by how long it'll take me, not be afraid of it! So thank you for not being a ridiculously fast artist.
The other problem is that I don't have any experience in making comics, and yet, I would HATE for this story to be left behind. This one is important to me and yet I want to learn while making it. I don't know how this'll go but I hope I won't screw it up.

I've written so many stories! I am trying to work on one right now that is currently titled "Goldenrook." It focuses on this little "mobile game" world where the main character explores some of the troubles that come with being a brand-new adult, family drama, habits, and mental health. I have another comic that is currently being called "Switch Fate" that's kind of a spoof off of "Growing Up Gerudo" by Junior and Roy. And because I can't seem to stop writing new things, I have another called "Lore of the Skies" that is an original mythology drama comic from some of my own books.

I've never really thought about creating a comic, I always wrote stories and I draw stuff (like the character from my stories) but I never really had the intention to combine it, but lately I've been watching so many of your (and other creator's) videos about web comics, I kinda wanna give it a shot. So far I've only got a rough idea in my head:
We've got a world where magic technically exists but it mostly forgotten, the last wizards died centuries ago. The protagonist is a kid who grew up with stories about the ancient times and decides that they want to become the first new age wizard. Magic is a skill and a science and there is no one left to teach them, so they travel the world looking for old texts and artefacts to reconstruct how magic was used, kind of like reconstructing an ancient dead language.
They're not alone on their quest, they are accompanied by a talking, way too enthusiastic hamster, who ate a magic artefact that made him sentient. The hamster's goal is to slay a dragon and therefore he needs an adventuring party, good thing he already found a wizard! Now he just need to find a dragon to slay

My webcomic is about a witch, a demon girl, a dragon humanoid, and a psychic with supernatural abilities living in an apartment complexes and trying to live normal lives, but they end up in supernatural situations. They're usually backed up by a fashion magazine VP (who also happens to be the witch's mother) and their landlord, a retired monster hunter. I've come up with the idea since March of 2020, the time where I first started writing the script for it. Boyfriend helps me in the script department

Hi, just want to let you know that I'm really enjoying your comic! I found it when I stumbled upon another of your videos last year, the 'things to never do in your webcomic' one. I got curious about the couple of pages you showed in that video, investigated it, and got completely hooked: you have such a great storytelling style and pacing that I was drawn in from the first chapter, and it's definitely become one of my favourite comics. The art is so beautiful and atmospheric, the main characters are really interesting and appealing (I think Rori's my favourite - she may be a bit of a brat but she's also a lot of fun as a character! - but I love precious baby boy Vector too), and I'm always excited whenever I realise it's a new page day! I also keep returning especially to the Goldview arc to read again and again, there's just something I find incredibly satisfying about that one in particular.
All this basically to say, I'm really enjoying it and look forward to see where you're going to take the story next! :D
As to the question from the video, I've got a comic idea in mind but I'm mostly focusing on refining my skill at animation through various small projects at present, so they're taking most of my creative energy right now. Maybe sometime in the future, though. The story, in its simplest form, is about a group of puppies working together to survive in the big city as they try to figure out where they belong in life; I have the characters designed and a rough overall plot, but definitely need to do a lot of working out specifics ^^ Interestingly, Amber - my secondary main character - was a design from a dream, just like Vector was for you!

i have found you through your sneak peaks of your book and now i have found your channel by sheer concidence!
your story of how your webcomic came to be is almost similair to mine except...
i am hella stubborn and i will not let go of constellargaze (and it's past iterations) no matter how much i am struggling kowkey sick of it.
but as an austic person, i cannot. this is basically my lifeline, my only friend though out all of my life. and encouragement of making friends (although i aint good at it)
so i stubbornly tretch on. working into it's lore, over and over and over again. and eventually i have 4 stories in one, i was intially working on only cosg, but.... i could not leave the other 4 stories behind in the dust...
so i let them come along, it's a long and hard process. but i have molded them into the stories i want them to be. although i aint satisified with some of them. but they won't leave my head, no matter how much i pondered and worried if it will become flopped
i will be damned if i don't, and although there are some medias that have multiple stories, like live a live and octopath traveler. i hope to release them someday, even if it literally took me years to get to them.

    2. 1 of the series, was funnily enpugh, the exact same way you came up with castoff, a dream. So the plot is tweaked and molded around the dreams. And the orignal dream is not at all what I came up with originally, I had the dream when I was 8, and while working on my other comic, I redesigned the charcters, and that night, I had a dream about them, in REDESIGNED FORM! 6:45 oh lawd. Had a dream where this mage was being tasked by this kingdom to kill this dragon that's been terrorizing the world. He finds an old tome and completely misreads the note thinking that this was some amazing ritual that grants the casters incredible powers. So he gets a bunch of mages together they go to a field and do the ritual, blinding flashing light, Protag-Kun wakes up in a field of gorgeous flowers. He can't find the other people though. He tries to cast magic to find every body and a bunch of flowers around him wilt and die and the detection spell shows he's surrounded by everybody. The ritual turned eveyone else to flowers and tied their power to him, so he has this immense power, but if he uses it everyone dies. So now he trying to beat the dragon without using the oneshot magic spell that will leave the field barren and tries to find a spell that will turn everyone back. .. . And that's when the Orks attack. . . .
I tell this dream to my cousin who promptly replies with "You need to lay off the melatonin" I said heck no, it's cheaper than netflix.

I've wanted to do a manga/comic all my life. In high school I had started brainstorming a manga that was pretty much "Bibleman" meets "Ironman" meets anime...that was utter trash XD. It's like you said, the first comic you ever do may never see the light of day or just not hit with you. I went through two to three comic ideas that never hit the illustration phase. Eventually I started working a manga idea that was based on some illustrations I made for my wife that was just us but in different franchises. This multiverse idea sprung up and over time I ended up writing a fanfic story of these characters all meeting and facing a multiverse threat, even made a t-shirt of it. Eventually my brother mentioned the idea of doing this story as an original piece and that made the story go in a reboot phase. Fast track a year and it started to have its own life. I've now created a power system, characters, and even a skeleton of a plot. It's been a fun journey and I think about it often. Your video was very helpful and inspiring, so thank you. Your work is awesome and makes me want to push myself and take this story further and hopefully within a year make it to a platform.

You have some excellent prose and I can tell how skilled you are in script writing in how you speak in your videos and how some of that has leaked into your auditory storytelling. Can't wait for the updated book! You are amazing and I wish you continued success.

Currently working on a web comic called Aaron Slak. It’s basically about this guy trying to shave off boredom with crazy consequences. Been meaning to make one for awhile but I keep getting rapped up in the story. So I decided to just start and let the story come as I work. Might not be great but it’s better than nothing.

I have been thinking about my characters' stories for a while and think it would be really fun to tell their stories as a webcomic. I wanted to do a story with themes of anti-establishment and punk ideals, but it's kind of complicated and a bit too much for me to tackle straight away. So, instead, I decided to do a simpler story that explains how the 2 main characters, Ash and Fountina, met and subsequently started being a couple. They meet in a rough situation in the city and Ash has to save Tina from a street fight. Ash makes sure she gets home safe and realizes she's loaded and her parents own a mansion. She thinks that she'll never see her again but at least she did a good thing for a stranger. But, within the same week she sees Tina getting in over her head again in a fight and has to save her again. The rest of the story is about them getting to know each other and Tina either reconciling with her parents or chosing to leave and live with Ash, even if their less well-off. Oh yeah, and every character is based on a specific art supply, Ash is a piece of compressed charcoal and Fountina is a fountain pen. I have a tiny little side story about Ash and Tina's pet cat that is also a ball of yarn.

Hey there. I ran across your RUclips channel a few weeks ago, and I eventually ended up on this video. It was the one that convinced me to read your webcomic, so I found the link in the description and I binge-read the whole thing in two days. I'm very curious about Sage now. And I'm wondering why pancakes are apparently a running Castoff gag when Frankie only mentions them one time in the actual comic...?

However I am in the same boat you were where you had an idea in your head for years. I thought about writing a novel based on characters I wrote back in high school but have scaled waaaay back to childrens book as it seems more appropriate. I've sat down the last couple of months and finished! I am in the process of finding a publisher

    Nice backstory!
I have an idea for a comic, a fantasyish fiction 'slice of life' more centred around character development (a fancy way of me saying putting my issues into a persona-esque character and having them heal for me over time), but I've gotten demotivated thinking about worldbuilding. I've heard people say that fantasy is one of those genres which needs super extensive planning for the setting, although I've just made a brief list of some elements which I think show up in everyday life (food, culture, clothes, where stuff comes from, and magic types), but I really wish to move on with actually writing down the plot and defining my characters and drawing stuff! I'm planning on not dwelling on it too much anymore (once summer break starts I'm starting on the fun stuff), and to hope that it doesn't cause an issue. Does anyone have any insights?

I used to draw little comic strips back in grade school and through most of high school. Nothing note-worthy, I was just trying to keep myself sane through the misery and boredom of our broken and very outdated "education" system... but I wonder if I could build on that old, flimsy foundation I wrote back then now that I have some real world experience and knowledge to inject into it...

Don't know if that helps but you don't need to show it to anyone or even tell them that you are working on something, if you mess up, it doesn't matter, it's only for yourself. Once you end up sort of liking it, show it to a good friend or random strangers on the internet and see if they like it too
