Hey man, great reaction. Anyone that reacts to Portishead and can appreciate their music earns a sub in my book. Good work!

This whole entire Album is like life in the 90's as a High School teenager going through a break up, being depressed, buring friends, and just being lost. Hell we've all been there. Great reaction dude.

Portishead was an important band at the beginning of the whole trip-hop genre in the 90s. You could also check bands / artists like Moloko, Mono, Hooverphonic, Cinematic Orchestra, Groove Armada, Faithless, Skinny, Archive ( especially the Londinium album ), Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, Morcheeba, Nitin Sawhney, 4Hero ...... again, a whole list of great shizzle. You wanna get a little bit deeper into EDM type stuff then bands / artists like Leftfield, Prodigy, Underworld, Tipper, Deadmau5 are great gateway stuff.

EDM is a term people who lived through this era don't recognise. EDM is a term Americans constructed decades after the UK had embraced Chicago House and created a global dance music movement.

    Dummy is a classic album.
Some other great triphop tracks worth checking out imo,
    Sneaker Pimps, "Six Underground"
    Massive Attack "Angel" and "Karmacoma"
Tricky, "Hell is around the corner" (which actually samples the same Issac Hayes song Portishead does in their song Glory Box [quick edit there, had the wrong song])
And for some stuff that's related but more energetic, try Propellerheads "History Repeating"(featuring the legendary Shirley Bassey)

Immortal classic trip hop number from the decade of trip hop - the 90s. As soon as that organ plays, you know you're gonna be in for a ride, and "Roads" takes you on that trip, with those strings taking you out into the atmosphere.

Portishead have so many great songs. As do their fellow Bristolians, Massive Attack. If you haven’t checked them out, here’s a nice little career progression - Unfinished Sympathy, Protection, Angel, Butterfly Caught, Live With Me, Atlas Air. You won’t be disappointed, I promise!

Loving everything you do here, man. If you like what you’ve heard from Portishead, check out a song called “The Rip.” It has some interesting elements (as always from them) and Beth sounds as haunting as ever.

So one of the bands I wanted to suggest to you has a link to Portishead - Talk Talk. Paul Webb, the bassist of Talk Talk later worked with Beth Gibbons (Lead singer of Portishead) under the name Rustin Man. Which is funny, because I noticed a long time before the similarities between Mark Hollis, lead singer of Talk Talk, and Beth. Sorry... Geeking out, there 😅 Anyway. Talk Talk have a very interesting sound progression in their career - much like Radiohead (which I'd also love to see your reaction to!) TT started off very poppy and got more and more experimental. So much I'd recommend, but maybe try 'The Rainbow' from their penultimate album 'Spirit of Eden' 😊🌈

the strings you hear are more than likely a Mellotron, they are/were amazing and pretty rare. it's basically an analog sampler before samplers using recorded tape loops. in this case the String Tape Loops....mind boggling how dude figured this out in the late 50s early 60s, i believe. at some point the 60's british rock bands got hip to them. it's all over records of the '60s/70s, King Crimsons entire Orchestral String sections are all Mellotron, it was/is signature to their sound. Moody Blues Band, Beatle song "Strawberry Fields" intro is a Mellotron but the 'Flute" samples. depending on which model you had, you may need to open up the machine, hand change and tune all of the tape reals to go from one instrument sound pallet, "patch" in modern terms, to another.... lol. ain't no Fruity Loops sampler...but i bet money FL Studio has Mellotron Samples! lol

    Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
    Never found our way
    Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong
    From this moment
How can it feel, this wrong
    Storm.. in the morning light
    I feel
    No more can I say
    Frozen to myself
I got nobody on my side
    And surely that ain't right
    And surely that ain't right
    Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
    Never found our way

If you love Portishead, you will like this song. ruclips.net/video/ffLr6tBndsQ/видео.html. It is by the group Low and the name of the song is Monkey. It is hypnotic and haunting. Low is really under the radar, but one of their biggest fans is Robert Plant from Zeppelin fame. He did a cover of Monkey on his 2010 album, and as he has often said, he only covers other people songs if he believes in his heart that it is superior to anything he could do. And coming from him, that’s high praise indeed. Hope you like it.

I'm pretty late, but if you like Trip Hop such as this band, I can't recommend "Big Calm" by Morcheeba enough. It's not exactly like this song, but it's a smooth, mellow jam with some decent bars over the top.
