You Mark have been an inspiration to me on the smoothie and now it’s my favorite go to gun. Can’t say I’m having as much fun as Mark but I’m trying ! Thanks for sharing the vids. 👍
Thanks for the compliment Mark but it is you that have been teaching us to shoot well Shooting well is not just hitting a mark ! But it is also accepting ourselves and our skills to enjoy our hobby-sport no matter what the outcome ! You teach us to enjoy ourselves ! Thank you so much. 👍
Mark, you are my model black powder shooter...the next time I go to the range with my Pedersoli Trade Gun I’ll use my performance to make other shooters feel good about themselves! 😁 Fred
You sure cheer me up! Getting old with no self judgement! I just made a set of forming dies for percussion caps for the new 1851 .44 pietta. I had no idea how small those caps are! Would have been easier if I had not been using 10 year old beer cans I found in the woods! Hoho now what to put in them thar teeny weeny cups!?!

Wow Mark you got alot of attention on this one. Great video thanks for doing that one for myself. I bet there are alot of smoothie people out there with the same results. Maybe patch it and try from the bench next time. I liked the extra shot with the ball shots that was way cool.
I must say I love your persistence. You definitely don't give up easily and I think that's great. I also love all the fun in between shots. Besides that if you would have hit them in the first 2 shots, the video would only be 30 seconds long 👍😆 PS I hope you're not getting buried in snow. It just started to flurry here about 3 pm
Went to the rifle range a couple weeks ago to shoot my 54 CVA Hawkins. Had just replace the read sight and need to shoot it in... I was the only Hawkin Shooter there and the range guy enjoyed watching me having some shooting fun.... It sure was cheaper shooting Powder, Patch and Ball then sending expensive rounds down range... Looking forward to going again.... I want a powder, patch and ball deer this year...
This is one of the guns that I have been looking at, I really like the Trade Gun or the short Brown Bess carbine for a French & Indian War period gun. It's a toss up between which one I am leaning more towards.
Both are good guns to use. I believe you will like which ever one you choose. The smoothbore is an exciting gun to shoot regardless of which one pick. Thanks for watching...
Hey there friend any where you recommend buying an authentic Kentucky long rifle I see imports all the time but I would like American made. Appreciate the input thanks
Depending on your budget, you can contact Tennessee Valley Muzzleloaders. They can fix you right up with custom built KY long rifles. They have various models to choose from: www.tvmnatchez.com
You can chase the dragons tail trying to make a smoothbore a tack driver or you can do like Mark and I do and just have fun shooting and enjoying range time.
HA!HA! Put a smile on my face! Actually thats not a bad group and that big hunk of lead sure did a number on that board, blew the tack clear into the outer limits. I would definitely call it a Big Foot Driver. A smooth bore is on my "one of these day's list" somewhere off in the distant future.
Thank you for those kind words my friend. The sling was purchased from Mike Eder at Flintlocks LLC. You can contact Mike at (317) 683-5102 Tell him the BPMS says "HI"...
Mark, I just had a rear sight installed on my Pedersoli trade gun. I think I’ll go down to the range and try your set-up to see if the rear sight makes a difference. I plan to cheat, however, and shoot off the bench,!!!!
I just pulled the trigger and ordered one of these for myself and my son. It says it takes 5/8" flints, but doesn't say if they're 5/8" square flints or 5/8 by 3/4". I want to order a few and put them away.
Hmm... Maybe try again....use birdshot maybe? #6 or 15 00 Buck? Just skip the ball all entire...lol If it helps, Lees 58 over sized improved minie seemed to shoot well out of my dads Canoe gun. Same model n make as the one your using here. Out of stock at Dixie Gun Works, but product id from them is CA6407. Our mould drops em out around 0.590. lubed with bore butter or bees wax/olive oil and 80 grains of ffg, his 60 year old eyes were hitting a 3-4 inch group at about 100 yards.
Just a thought. Tight patch the ball. Remove the sling so that is not in the way of your looking down the barrel to see the front sight in relation to the rest of the barrel. Give that a go.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter I have a friend here at our local gun club. He shoots smoothbore and can make a fist-sized group at 50 yards. His recipe is a tight patched ball and a matched powder load.
Ever think of using a chewed ball without a patch I use it in a smooth bore 54 I got and it's a bit more accurate than the patched .530 but it cant be called a tack driver by far cause it's a blunderbuss but with your longer barrel and front sight it may help out
I've been asked to try "chewed" balls or ones rolled on a wood rasp. I need to do this one again sometime trying both type of round balls. That should be interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.
My .62 fowler is slightly more accurate, but the breech end is glass bedded and it has a bit higher quality barrel than what Pedersoli uses, but short of shot loads like you showed, I doubt it could drive any sort of tacks. It's minute of deer vitals within 50 yards, and thats all i really expect of it.

It would be interesting to put a smooth bore like that on a good rest that would eliminate human error. Just to see how it groups. Based on what I see in the video it already groups fairly decent especially when considering being shot off hand and being smooth bore.
