This was released on one of the best rock albums ever. Every Picture Tells a Story. Every song is great. Mandolin Wind and the title track are my favorites.
"Mandolin Wind" is my very favorite song of his ever. It's beautiful. I used to play the mandolin part on my mandolin over and over as a kid, after struggling to figure out my best version I could come up with. But I've seen Rod playing it on the banjo too. The melody just pleased my ears so much! It's such a beautiful song. 🎵 🪕💃🇺🇲
I am 74 and have never examined a song so in detail. Was 21 when this song came out, was married, two kids and we loved the music of our time thanks for the memories. I still have all our old records.
In the January 2007 issue of Q magazine, Stewart recalled: "Maggie May was a true story, about the first woman I had sex with, at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival."[5][6] The woman's name was not "Maggie May"; Stewart has stated that the name was taken from "an old Liverpudlian song about a prostitute."[6]
I have watched at least two interviews where Rod has given the backstory of this song. He stated the story is “loosely” based on the experience he had at the festival. He lost his V-card to an older, big woman in a tent at the two day festival. They didn’t exchange names and “as far as he knows, her name could have been Rose”. It was over before it began, (not surprising, first experience and all). In and out, no info exchanged, he didn’t mention if there was money exchanged though, lol. Rod has some great stories to tell. He certainly made up for that experience with some of the most beautiful women of that time.

He wrote this song as a teen. Iconic song. Have seen him many, many times live--with the Faces and solo. The tingles I feel when the entire audience sings this song with little prompting. Proves music is universal. Re, his longevity, he has always prioritized his health--he LOVES his soccer. Very fit guy. He admits to being vain about his hair--he does that himself--for fans, it is one of his endearing quirks. His early solo work is amazing. I have always counted the 'Tom Dowd' period as a low point. (the disco period). He and Ron Wood (woody) were part of Jeff Beck's early group the Small Faces. Woody and Rod have been friends since forever. Jeff and Rod had a complicated relationship. Rod always loved the man. I have marveled that so small a country produced so many superlative musicians, singers, composers. Woody published a book in recent years based on his diaries from back in the day.
I was three when this song came out. My mother says that I would be running round crazy in the house, but if this song came on the radio, I'd immediately stop whatever I was doing and sit next to the radio calmly and listen to the entire song. Once the song was over, back to the insanity. To this day, it's still one of my favorite songs. Even named my dog Maggie May.
His first love affair was with an older woman and he wrote this song about that experience. He was 16, she was grown woman that he met at a music festival.
Young guy, older woman. Maggie May is kind of a universal theme. You don't have to be so literal. Just enjoy. Rod Stewart was always oozing raw sex. Just his angle. His voice and his delivery was and still is unique. I always loved his music, and he's a hell of a showman.
It’s great to hear his voice from the 70’s, cuz it really hasn’t changed much. Actually became more seasoned, he did a song with Sting & Bryan Adam’s for the 3 musketeers movie. Now there’s a video watch and react too, 3 great rockers who have aged well but stayed humble.
The guitarist in the yellow pants and black & white jacket (long dark hair) is Ronnie Wood, he went on to join the Rolling Stones in 1975 and nearly 50 years later he is still playing with them 👍
My very first concert when my parents let me go on a date alone in the guy’s car was to see Rod Stewart and Faces. Sweet memories of being 16 in 1971. Thank you!
You’re insticts were right! I think you missed the verse in the beginning, “The morning sun when its in your face really shows your age…”. I love this song, it envokes a certain retro emotion in me I can’t quite put a finger on lol
I've always taken the story as a college-age guy hooking up with an older woman - it's the line "All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand." He was looking for a mentor and she turned into a lover. It's a song that to me has always been the "Should I break up with her or not?" type of song. He's torn. He loves her, but he's realizing this relationship may not be the best for him. In the end, he stays - for now.
I was in the 4th grade when this song came out and I loved it from the first listening. I'm now 62 and it is still in my Top 5 favorite songs ever list.
This is the first song I ever heard by Rod Stewart. I immediately bought the record, lol. Surprised my parents let me. Great song, even though I knew what the story was about. I was a teenager and I knew good music when I heard it.
This is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I still remember hearing this for the first time when I was 7 years old in Oakland, California. An endearing memory I cherish to this day! Ron Wood's guitar is simply fantastic and one of my all-time favorites as well.
Great Song! It never gets old. When I was 15, I had a Maggie; she broke my heart. On New Year's Eve 1994, Rod Stewart performed to an estimated 3.5 million people at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When that many people come to see you, that should say you have done something right. Mandolin Wind is another song I love by him. And yes, "Maggie May" is about his first sexual experience with an older woman at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival.
I named my youngest daughter Maggie Mae.. I always loved this song. I was named after a song too. I guess that makes it a family tradition. 😆 Mine was Carrie Ann by the Hollies in 1968.
Yes me too but I was 7 I still grew up with that music. It was just the beat back, music all I heard was Maggie mae😮until I got older. Kind of like coming of age you realize😅
Rod Stewart is multifaceted like a diamond. His "Hot Legs", "Tonight's the Night" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" are bangers that show another side of his talent. 🤘Rock on, Kelly 🤘
In his memoir Rod: The Autobiography, Stewart provided details of the experience that led to this song. Wrote Stewart: "At 16, I went to the Beaulieu Jazz Festival in the New Forest. I'd snuck in with some mates via an overflow sewage pipe. And there on a secluded patch of grass, I lost my not-remotely-prized virginity with an older (and larger) woman who'd come on to me very strongly in the beer tent. How much older, I can't tell you - but old enough to be highly disappointed by the brevity of the experience."
Rod’s catalog is over 60 years deep! Mandolin Wind, A Reason to Believe,Sailing, The Motown Song, Young Turks, The First Cut is the Deepest,I Din’t Want to Talk About It, I Was Only Joking… just to name a few favorites!🎤🎼
Oh, my. My all time favorite. This was being played on the radio in the spring of ‘72 and I was very pregnant with our first. Always takes me back down memory lane ❤
That last riff was a mandolin. The story is phenomenal, this is my fav Rod Stewart song. He did it in concert last year and sounded very close to the same voice as he had then :)
As mentioned this is actually The Faces, the giveaway is Ronnie Wood playing guitar, Rod actually was out of work for awhile after they broke up, became a grave digger, literally, then made a huge come back
You just can’t go wrong with Rod. My childhood consisted mainly of Rod. Seen him a few times. It’s even passed to my kids. Me , my parents and my kids all went to see him and it was a really special night. You just literally can’t go wrong with Rod ❤
This is a legendary video, Top Of The Pops had a history of making musicians lipsynch to recorded music, on this particular day Rod decided he was going to turn that on its head, the guy pretending to play the mandolin is magnificent radio dj John Peel, if you manage to find the entire video by the end they are playing football (soccer to you) around the stage while the music is still playing. Notice The Faces and Rolling Stones' Ron Wood is there. The song is about an older woman Rod met at a Jazz festival in France when he was 16, they met again many years later.
My 1st concert was Rod Stewart in like 84 then The Jackson 5 the next year. I was like 5 or 6 but still remember alot of those shows, Rod kicked soccer balls into the crowd all 3 times I seen him back then.
"The morning light really shows your age" Yes, she is an older woman. The story is about a college Freshman who is still living at home. He meets an older woman and has a summer time fling with her. Now he has woken up one morning and is trying to decide what he is going to do with his life, because the world doesn't look the same to him anymore.
❤❤Rod Stewart is so good. I love him. I really hope you find your way to People Get Ready with Jeff Beck. That is one is all about the feels, and guitar. Hands down my all time FAVORITE Rod song.
LOL! My boyfriend (who was younger than me) back-in-the-day used to randomly strum and sing this when I'd walk by. It's always been one of my favorite songs, so I loved it. 🤣 It always made me laugh!
young man with his first older woman he is torn between some hot older woman love and going back to school...but she is just to damn good to leave...speak the truth bro thats why im here..
The Rod Rocker before he wore the pink satin shorts on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. My older brothers first concert 1973 SF Winterland, he still talks about it...they rocked!
"Maggie Mae" my favorite of Stewart's, too. Rod co-wrote it with someone else. When he says he couldn't give her anymore, he means of himself, as he gave his all and not just sexually. He would have been talking about college, not high school, and yes, an older woman. Also, he evidently cares about her more than she does about him. It is said the we humans have two main topics on our brains mostly--sex and death. Lol. Love the men's colorful clothing--yellow pants, big ties, patterned jackets and shirts, red suit, etc. Men, start dressing nicer and more colorful, like they did in the 60s ad 70s. Celebrate our lives!! '-)
I sing this song everyday of my life bc of my mother! My cat's name is Magento and she called him maggie and she listened to Rod Stewart all the time. I walk around singing this song to my cat hahaha
I've always liked Rod Stewart. He looks soo young! We're probably similar age. His hair back then, not great. Probably sign of the times. He does have a few spiky parts, but thinks he looked better when he got older. I agree with you 100% about your analogy of the song. Absolutely, love you!
This is the first song of his that I ever heard. I loved him right away. He wanted to become a big soccer player. He got an injury early on in his life so music was his next go to career. I would say that he did very well in his second career. He’s been singing for about six decades.
Opening line "The morning sun, when it's in your eyes, really shows your age." Yes, he's in cougar town.

70's were fab.....18yrs old when this was released!❤
My all time favourite Rod Stewart song. Every picture tells a story will always be my favourite album of Rod's
Yes, it was highschool, he was 16 in 1961 when the encounter he is sing about occurred.
"All For Love" Great Song I haven't seen anyone react to it.
I named a cow after this song! She actually became a multiple time world champion Longhorn!😂
❤
My favorite Rod Stewart song! It is a classic!!
The guitarist in the yellow pants and black & white jacket (long dark hair) is Ronnie Wood, he went on to join the Rolling Stones in 1975 and nearly 50 years later he is still playing with them 👍
The drummer is Kenney Jones, who went on to replace Kieth Moon, with The Who.
Sting,Brian Adam’s and Sir Rod Stewart- All For Love! Great video and a great collaboration!
I adore Rod!😊
I've always taken the story as a college-age guy hooking up with an older woman - it's the line "All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand." He was looking for a mentor and she turned into a lover. It's a song that to me has always been the "Should I break up with her or not?" type of song. He's torn. He loves her, but he's realizing this relationship may not be the best for him. In the end, he stays - for now.
I was in the 4th grade when this song came out and I loved it from the first listening. I'm now 62 and it is still in my Top 5 favorite songs ever list.
This has been on my playlist for decades
This is the first song I ever heard by Rod Stewart. I immediately bought the record, lol. Surprised my parents let me. Great song, even though I knew what the story was about. I was a teenager and I knew good music when I heard it.
One of the greatest albums of all time.
"You Wear It Well" is another great song from Rod, from that era.
This is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I still remember hearing this for the first time when I was 7 years old in Oakland, California. An endearing memory I cherish to this day! Ron Wood's guitar is simply fantastic and one of my all-time favorites as well.
One of the Greatest Songs of All-Time.
Love the mandolins in this song. The full intro with tjr mandolinr is gorgeous.
I have seen Rod many times in concert 🎵 He is so good!
The soundtrack of my 7th grade. I bought every album he put out during those years. Thank you!
You make me laugh, thank you , I forget how young you are, to me this song is a great memory of my young life , I’m 76
I named my youngest daughter Maggie Mae.. I always loved this song. I was named after a song too. I guess that makes it a family tradition. 😆 Mine was Carrie Ann by the Hollies in 1968.
I was 11 when this came out, love how hearing the old classics take you back, we enjoyed the music and didn’t really look that hard at the meaning.
Agree plus Sailing.
My least favourite of his songs. I much prefer his amazing ballads, and Sailing.
Several of Rod's songs have mandolin playing in them as well as other people's hits so that may be why that riff seems familiar.
Great Reaction... Maggie May is one of those songs great on a road trip mixed tape as is upbeat and fun. The 'mandolin' riff at the end makes it ..
Oh, my. My all time favorite. This was being played on the radio in the spring of ‘72 and I was very pregnant with our first. Always takes me back down memory lane ❤
This songs brings back so many memories…I was someone’s Maggie Mae! Yes sir you are absolutely correct about the story.
That last riff was a mandolin. The story is phenomenal, this is my fav Rod Stewart song. He did it in concert last year and sounded very close to the same voice as he had then :)
Keep listening to the old stuff there's a wealth of gold out there
As mentioned this is actually The Faces, the giveaway is Ronnie Wood playing guitar, Rod actually was out of work for awhile after they broke up, became a grave digger, literally, then made a huge come back
And then he joined the Rolling Stones in 1975.
The grave digging job was very brief as a young lad before the Faces . The Faces split and Rod went solo moving to the US
You just can’t go wrong with Rod. My childhood consisted mainly of Rod. Seen him a few times. It’s even passed to my kids. Me , my parents and my kids all went to see him and it was a really special night. You just literally can’t go wrong with Rod ❤
"People Get Ready" will show you yet another side of Rod and one of my all-time favorite tunes. Haters gonna hate, just ignore the trolls
Yes ! With the late Jeff Beck ... amazing peak Rod Stewart .... loved 'People Get Ready' ❤ x
The song is about an older woman Rod met at a Jazz festival in France when he was 16, they met again many years later.
i've seen the video many times and was waiting for the football to appear.
@@sarablack2547 If you go looking for it only the cut version appears, it might have been removed.
@@isabelsilva62023 that's a shame I love seeing some personality,sense of humour,life in a 'live'performance.
You are forgetting Kenny Jones on the drums too, Small Faces, Faces and The Who.
Love seeing Rod rocking his shag haircut😍 Oh the memories!
The legend Rod Stewart and one of the best songs ever-check out his Every Picture Tells a Story/Stay With Me❤🔥
My 1st concert was Rod Stewart in like 84 then The Jackson 5 the next year. I was like 5 or 6 but still remember alot of those shows, Rod kicked soccer balls into the crowd all 3 times I seen him back then.
Too funny don't listen to the haters I love watching you don't change
This is one of my favorites! Brings me back to my teens.
“If you think I’m sexy”, was one of my favorite songs. I was only around 10 when it came out.I even had the record!❤️🔥🙀
I love this song ❤ As a little kid I would sing it word for word but I had no idea what it meant 😂
What I have always loved about this song is that it doesn't have a chorus. Just an amazing story and musicianship.
young man with his first older woman he is torn between some hot older woman love and going back to school...but she is just to damn good to leave...speak the truth bro thats why im here..
The Rod Rocker before he wore the pink satin shorts on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. My older brothers first concert 1973 SF Winterland, he still talks about it...they rocked!
This was my favorite song for years.
Welcome to prude America, this was on TV in the '70's when we were kids and watching it with mum and dad
No, no, no. Rod Stewart didn’t shy away from sexual topics. You’re 💯 right on about this song.
This was my favorite song in high school. Love it and love your reaction!
Mandolin Wind! I know you will love it too. Rod plays the banjo, a must see!
One of his best!
A very favorite oldie.
I sing this song everyday of my life bc of my mother! My cat's name is Magento and she called him maggie and she listened to Rod Stewart all the time. I walk around singing this song to my cat hahaha
This is my favorite Rod Stewart Song ever!
I've always liked Rod Stewart. He looks soo young! We're probably similar age. His hair back then, not great. Probably sign of the times. He does have a few spiky parts, but thinks he looked better when he got older. I agree with you 100% about your analogy of the song. Absolutely, love you!
That’s called a mandolin. 😊
was john peel playing the mandolin (guy on the stool)?
@@carolynwatson7817 Yes. I didn’t know his name, but, yes.
Guy sitting on the stool is John Peel. Much loved, much respected radio DJ.
Oh! You gotta do a reaction to "Tonight's the Night" by Rod...oh yeeeah!!!
This is the first song of his that I ever heard. I loved him right away. He wanted to become a big soccer player. He got an injury early on in his life so music was his next go to career. I would say that he did very well in his second career. He’s been singing for about six decades.
