Hey, my 87 year old father died last year and ever since this song was released 69/70, dad always said to play this at his funeral, that's what we played as our exiting music to the service. Couldn't let him down after being such a brilliant father despite his latet dementia and I hope he looked down with a smile on his beautiful face
We danced around my Granny's Casket to this when she passed in her 80s . She never wanted a somber funeral, she always wanted a party. I'd like the same.❤
Only one word for this: iconic! Didn't read all the comments so I'll say it. They asked Norman what this song means to him. He replied "It means I'll never have to work again". Classic!
Yeah, It was the Porter Waggoner show. Porter always ended his show with a gospel song...the Network hated it, but Porter said it was his show, and he wanted a gospel song.
There's also an error in his lyrics when he says "never been a sinner-I never sinned"-wrong!! that's all we do as humans-without Jesus we would never enter God's Kingdom-Jesus is the one who has never sinned not us-however he wipes away all of our sins when we repent and follow HIM.
Actually it is not an error. When taking Jesus as your savior he treats us as if we are sinless, it is the only way we make it to Heaven. The lyric is often misunderstood.
Your daughter will remember these moments with her daddy for the rest of her life. A cool Jewish guy that liked gospel music and wanted to give it a try. Brilliant song that has appeared in dozens or hundreds of movies and TV shows and covered many times.
Maybe it's a little closer in doctrine than it looks. Yes people sin but if you believe, Jesus will forgive your sins therefore you wouldn't be a sinner any longer. But I do get your point.

This song is on my daily play list. It always makes me think of my grandmother who we lived next door to. Gramma didn't have a mean bone in her body. She was very religious yet not in the sense that she had to join a building full of people to show her belief in God....she lived it every single day in everything she did. I never heard a radio play in her house. She didn't watch t.v.....she read her Bible, baked, took care of her home and watched the wildlife outside of her windows. She and I had a very special relationship. One of the things we liked to do with each other was pick weeds out of her front yard. One day I saw her in the yard, so I walked over. I had with me my handy dandy portable radio tuned into the one AM station we had where I lived. I turned it down, set it on the ground and joined Gramma picking weeds. I heard the DJ introduce this song so I asked Gramma if she would listen to it with me. She answered yes, so I picked my radio up, turned it up and stood beside Gramma. Within moments she was bopping to the beat....something I had never seen her do. She faced me, reached her hands out to me, so I set the radio down and we stood there dancing in place while holding hands through the whole song. Nothing like that ever happened again with me and Gramma but on that one sunshiny day, Spirit in the Sky had a 60+ year old woman and an adolescent girl vibing and dancing together in her front yard. It was beautiful. Thanks for your reaction and for reminding me of that happy day. Take care and be well. Peace.
Among the nastiest guitar tones of all time, and remains an undiscovered holy grail to this day. Even Norman himself was never able to fully capture it like they did in the studio.
I read an article online years ago that said they brought in a session guitar player for this one. He had an amp that he used a razor to cut slits in the speakers.
@@robertthomas4016 A legendary tone such as this, is bound to have some legends told about it. I have no idea which are real and which are not. The particular one I heard, was he was using someone else's guitar that had an early and crude amp built in to it, sort of like Clapton uses. I do find it amusing though, that a Jewish guy wrote one song about Jesus, and basically retired off it in his 30s.
I read in an interview with Norman, there was an add-on for the guitar (instead of the pedals which was apparently the usual way - not a guitarist here so it's all dutch to me) a band member had invented, but he later disappeared and they couldn't reproduce it and so they were never quite able to reproduce the exact same sound again.
Hearing this song on the radio when I was a kid, I always thought it sounded like a saxophone. My dad played sax ( still does today) and he sometimes got a somewhat similar sound while warming up. I didn't learn until many years later that it was really some weird guitar fuzztone that nobody has been able to recreate since.
My husband knew Norm , he was a friend. After Norm became Christian, and this song was a HIT, the sludge of the L.A. Music Industry were really after him, & before they could drag him back to the 👹, his wife & he became kinda hermit ranchers up in the northwest somewhere...
As an atheist, I can say this is probably my favourite religious song. Followed by U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". This is definitely a banger
You gotta hand it to Norman. He was able see that a Christian song would be more popular than a Jewish song. He also took the folk base and added some psychedelic rock and created a song that everybody loved. When you can get a Jew and an atheist to sing, "I got a friend in Jesus", you know how to sell your song. I guess its all about appealing to your target audience.

I love watching you with your daughter discovering these iconic songs. Expanding your reality. We had the best music back then. 68 now. Great time to be alive! I know that am going to the live for eternity with Jesus! 🎚
Great reaction. Showing my age here but I grew up with this kind of music. A lot of Viet Nam war music and a lot of 70's stuff. Best music ever made! Hell, every commercial on tv has a 70's song for their cars or whatever.
In the 80s this songs Spirit in the Sky was redone by a group called doctor and the medics. You need to check them out on your channel you'll be surprised as to how they sound and what they look like.
I am 72 years old. This song I have loved since it came out. lol The year I graduated from High school. I hear it and I want to dance. This song I want played at my funeral. Actually I want a celebration of life, and I want my family to play this and dance with joy. Not sorrow that I passed but joy that I had a good life and am going to be at peace. yup..DANCE!!
I decided when I was in high school in the 70's that I want this played at my funeral. Still do. Loudly. And I want people to be dancing and singing along.❤
This song was all over the radio in 1969! I was 7 at the time, loved it then, love it now! Norman was a Man Massachusetts boy at the time, he's now an organic farmer in Wisconsin with his wife of many decades.I watched an interview with him on RUclips recently. He said many musicians asked him how he got that fuzz in his guitar, and he had to tell them he couldn't remember 😂 super cool, down to to earth nice guy. Great pick!
Every time my dad street raced old school back in 74 and played this song on 8track he won the race quarter mile 1971 Dodge Swinger 6-pack. I love the Song by Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions / the lyrics are mind blowing crazy good 👍🏻👍🏻 if you know you know the Joke 😂
When my dad passed away we played this at his graveside. It was his one request. Hearing it blasting out over the cemetery is my best memory of a supremely difficult time. I know he was up there rocking out to it. I will always cherish the looks from everyone there to honor him. At first complete shock, then total understanding because they knew my dad and that this is the way he would want to be remembered, rocking out until the end. My sister and I couldn't look at each other while it was playing, we would laugh every time we made eye contact. He knew the reaction it would get and it tickled his mischievous funny bone every time he talked about having it played. I miss him everyday, but this song always brings him back to me.
This was such a GREAT reaction, Pegasus. I love hearing your thoughts about anything, cuz I (a white dude that's gonna turn 59 in a month) agree with your views over 90% of the time. Played this at my brother's Memorial Service - when we were kids he bought this 45 and played it every day for years. A great song by a nice Jewish kid that Christians loved and atheists even liked singing along with!
Love this song. She's adorable!!
I love watching you with your daughter discovering these iconic songs. Expanding your reality. We had the best music back then. 68 now. Great time to be alive!
I know that am going to the live for eternity with Jesus! 🎚
She’s adorable😂 glad she got to witness this song! Great reaction! I’m glad you got this finally!
He's living everybody's dream. He did this one hit and retired. Still living off this song. One of my favorite stories.
Great reaction. Showing my age here but I grew up with this kind of music. A lot of Viet Nam war music and a lot of 70's stuff. Best music ever made! Hell, every commercial on tv has a 70's song for their cars or whatever.
I read that Norman Greenbaum noticed that there was no cool Christian rock then. So he wrote this. A success! This song is always so cool to hear.
This was my mothers favorite song RIP Mom
So fun seeing your daughter make an appearance! Cute!!!!
There's nothing better than being a Dad is there ! ❤
She is just adorable! Cute as a speckled pup under a cabbage leaf, as we say.
I'm sorry don't know your daughters name..but she's sweet and to be part of the reaction today it made it extra special !❤
This song just pulls you in ..
She’s an angel baby!!
I decided when I was in high school in the 70's that I want this played at my funeral. Still do. Loudly. And I want people to be dancing and singing along.❤
I've been listening to this for over 50 years and it's still good!
Great pick!
Bringing back some old memories dancing to spirit in the sky 😂
Ok she is ADORABLE! Dancing on dad’s lap. This has been a fav song of mine since it came out!! Catchy tune too!
She’s so cute 😊
Every time my dad street raced old school back in 74 and played this song on 8track he won the race quarter mile 1971 Dodge Swinger 6-pack. I love the Song by Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions / the lyrics are mind blowing crazy good 👍🏻👍🏻 if you know you know the Joke 😂
Old school guitar fuzz always the best
Your little shorty stole your show! Darling baby! Great song!
I’ve got a friend in JESUS, LETS GO!
OMGoodness! What a gorgeous little Darling! Great job Dad! That was fun! 🥰🙏💖
That little lady is a super star brother bless you and your family . Great show I'm watching thank you
When my dad passed away we played this at his graveside.
It was awesome seeing you with your daughter! I can see why you're so proud of your family. God Bless all y'all. Peace! Keep up the great work! 🤟
You have a beautiful daughter, mine still lives w/ me @ 33, sometimes we have arguments but we always hug and make good. My wife, RIP, daughter, son and family is what I prayed for and got exactly what asked for. This song brought me back to the mid 80's when I bounced @ a bar called the Ram's Head. Thursday night was oldies night and always packed. Songs we never hear anymore. Thank you.
Best sidekick ever...lol. Loved watching her jam out. Super adorable.
That was very wonderful of you to let her join in this reaction tapping. God bless 🙏 all of you.
I've had this on my list for so long!! So happy u finally got to it!! And what an awesome song for Alynia to be introduced to! I love when she randomly pops in!!
Even back when I was Agnostic (now Christian), I loved this song. Such a great vibe. And great message.
