The song was written by Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac and recorded by them in 1968. The 1970 Santana cover, sung by Gregg Rolie, became the popular version.
Greg Rolie was the original vocalist and organist for Santana starting in 1969. Neil Schon was also a member from 1971, joining at age 17. They both left the band in 1973 and were the founders of what would become Journey.
It’s odd how my opinion of the song chances once I find out that it’s Greg Rawlings who is singing! I know who Greg Rawlings is & I know who Schon is. I don’t normally know who playing the instruments! Impressive on their part, I would say. Great singing Gregg!
This is Gregg Rolie singing, he also played piano and sang for Journey before and after Steve Perry first joined the band. Neil Schon and Gregg Rolie were both in Santana and started Journey together. Watch a live video of this song, you will see Gregg singing it. 😊
There was interaction between Sanatan and Journey and other Bay Area Artists. Journey’s guitarist, Neal Schon, was asked by Santana to play with his band when Neal was in high school (prior to Journey). Neal never officially joined the band.
Santana bolstered up an entire genre of rock that was very needed. The Latin flavors, and rythmns gave other artists a new field to explore. Now, please react to Tim Buckley-"Sweet Surrender." You'll thank me.
I can pick out Santana on guitar almost immediately he is one of my faves! He does sing and has a good voice but this was not him singing. He mostly sings backup. You would like the vibe of “Oye Como Va” I am sure you’ve heard it somewhere. Saw him live in Vegas about 8 years ago and he was awesome! More Santana please! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
You often share your 'finds' with your friends. Find a live performance and be blown away. Santana received the Kennedy Center Honor. Partied through the 60's-80's. Dang we had good music. Thanks for appreciating the 'classics'.
I bought this album when I was 16 years old... still have it and still listen to it on my Pioneer Stereo System with the two 4ft. wooden encased speakers from the same era! Priceless! ✌️&❤
Santana is 🔥🔥🔥 I actually saw him the first time live in Mexico, many moons ago. Been in love with his guitar work ever since, was probably 40 years ago ✌ cheers
When Abraxas came out, we were amazed at the sound. The Bay area had been producing great musicians for years. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, CCR, Doobie Brothers, War, Tower of Power, and Fillmore West concerts brought in everyone. The vibe of those days and hippies and free love made SF the place to be
Can you imagine hearing this in your mid teens? I was in my mid teens and immediately hooked...I have never looked back, this feeds the whole body.. no need to see them, just close your eyes and you are right there.. thanks BP.. more classic Santana when you can please.
Definitely need to check out this entire album Santana Abraxis, definitely my personal favorite. Yeah this was trippin music, take you to places unknown, lol. Thanks for sharing B. P.👍💕
honestly one of the best groups you can ever see live, seen them 3 times and each time it was so different, I'm an old short fat bloke but even i could not stop moving their rhythms are infectious
I got the chance to see him and his band in concert on Maui Hawaii back in 1993 being a young German tourist. There were two complete drum kits - six percussionists in total. The whole crowd was dancing from the first to the last second. Definitely the best concert experience I have ever had until today even though I actually was more into much heavier music at that time...
Greg Rollie sang the vocals on Black Magic Woman. He was the original keyboardist for Journey who left shortly after Steve Perry joined the band. Journey guitarist Neal Schon also was in Santana before leaving with Rollie to form Journey. Rollie and Perry split vocals on Journey’s “Same Way You Love Me” and a few others before Rollie moved on and Journey hit it big.
Rolie and Perry were on three albums together (four, if you count "Dream, After Dream," which was not widely distributed), so not "shortly after." Rolie was phased out of vocals, though, and mostly played keyboards. But yeah, Journey with Rolie had some minor hits but didn't hit big until after Rolie left.
Also, Santana is one of the few artists to chart in EVERY decade since the 60’s! 😳 69 - Evil Ways, 70’s - Black Magic Woman & Oye Como Va, 80’s - Hold On & Winning, 90’s - Smooth & Maria Maria, 00’s - Game of Love, 10’s- Photograph & La Flaca.
@ I’ve seen the Stones live several times… but I was thinking they took a break from releasing new albums for a while. I’ll have to Wiki their discography along with Aerosmith. Edit: I forgot about the Blues album they did in 2016. That was the missing decade in my mind. And no on Aerosmith. Their first album was 73 and they haven’t charted an album in the past 10.
Greg Rolle is the original lead singer for the band. He is the organist that you saw on "Soul Sacrifice". He left the band a few years later and co-founded the band Journey. Carlos used to sing backing vocals, but I don't believe he has done that in years.
You have to do "Put Your Lights On" by Everlast and Santana. It will show how you how well Santana adapts. I understand he went to the session with Everlast without even knowing what they would be recording. Everything he did he came up with during the session.
Santana on this song Gregg Rolie Lead Vocals/ Keys Carlos Santana. Guitar Michael Shrieve. Drums David Brown. Bassist Jose Areas. Timbales Michael Carabello. Congos Gregg just has that kinda soulful vocals that fits their music so well , of course he left a few years later to form Journey with teenage guitar wiz Neal Schon who had joined Santana earlier Gregg was the lead vocals on Journeys first 3 albums
It has a bass hook and a lead guitar hook at the same time! Santana is always amazing. Almost forgotten to mention, the organist, forget his name offhand, was a friend of my parents.
Another classic song (and album) from the early 70s, when rock n roll creativity was peaking. Like so much rock and soul from that era, there was so much creativity and artistry in the music of that era, and the jams often made these songs so great.
GREG ROLIE WAS THE LEAD SINGER OF SANTANA. HE PLAYED ORGAN/KEYBOARDS TOO. SANTANA HIMSELF WAS NOT A SINGER. ROLIE WAS WITH SANTANA UNTIL HE LEFT TO FORM THE BAND JOURNEY. SO IT WAS ROLIE ON LEAD VOCALS AS HE WAS ON MOST OF THE SANTANA TUNES OF THE LATE 60S AND EARLY 70S. HE WAS A GREAT UNDERRATED SINGER.
Gregg Rolie was in the band with Carlos Santana. He sang on that recording. Later on, Greg and another guy from that band ended up forming Journey. Carlos Santana makes his guitar emote in ways I have not heard duplicated in quite that way. Mark Knopfler also makes his guitar cry and sing, though they have different styles. Still... hearing either of them sends me into instant happiness and satisfaction.
Santana is the band named after the Guitar Player Carlos Santana, sometimes he participates in vocals but he is pulling out the love from that guitar...BP you have got to go on and watch some live video to get the whole experience...this a song to dance to
As others have said, The song was written and originally performed by Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac in 1968. In fact, Green encouraged to Santana go record the song. I strongly encourage you to listen to Fleetwood Mac’s version whether you react to it or not. It’s very good. It has a blues influence, where Santana’s has a Latin influence (obviously).
It was 1974 or 75, and I drove with my girl from Indianapolis to Cleveland to see a show at Cleveland Stadium. The lineup was Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - The Band, Jesse Colin Young, and Santana. All were great, but Santana was the highlight.
I discovered Santana when buying an album for my daughter to practice Latin dancing. I am ever grateful to the guy in the record shop who recommended Santana! We got to see him live at Wembley - it was awesome!
So glad you listened to the extended, full version, There's a shorter version designed for radio that skips that whole later section which is where the band just goes OFF.
So incredible. I forgot how amazing this song is. Thanks for the reminder of how terrific they were. And yes, that was Carlos Santana on both guitar and vocals.
Carlos Santana was about 23 when he played this at Woodstock, he is a Master Guitarist. The song would be nothing without the music and that’s why we only associate this song with Carlos Santana. This song is a work of art, true art not trendy pop . it will be still played in 100 - 200 years from now. That is the difference between pop stars in true artists.
The original by Fleetwood Mac seemed to put the emphasis of the song on "Black MAGIC Woman". With Santana the emphasis seemed to be on 'BLACK Magic Woman". I had the pleasure of seeing Santana 4 times, twice with Neil Schon. I also had the pleasure of seeing "Journey" immediately after Rolie and Schon left. Great days man.
Carlos sang a little in the very early days, and he's always done some of the backing vocals, but Gregg Rolie was the lead singer during this era of Santana. It was written, first recorded and sung by Peter Green while he was in the very early version of Fleetwood Mac.
Santana is one of the smoothest vibes i love the rhythm yes he does sing but not on here....this album will always be in my top 5.....great reaction...just like you said now this is real music...Sometimes you just have to sit back and just enjoy greatness...
This is Greg Rollie singing who is also on keyboards. He is one of the OGs since before the record deals, played and sang on the first five Santana albums with returning collaborations later and to this day. He left Santana with second Guitarist from the 3rd, 4th and 5th album to go form The Golden Gate Rhythm Section, a For Hire band for studio collaborations. They eventually started writing their own songs and became Journey. Greg was also the main vocalist and keyboards in the early days of Jorney until Steve Perry came on board. Btw, this is a Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac composition originally but Santana not only covered it but also added their own flavor on top of the whole second half instrumental being all Santana creation.
This tune is from Abraxas and could not stop listening to this album in college when it first came out (along with Simon and Garfunkel). Santana does sing, but this is Gregg Rolie.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience is the name of the band as a whole..FYI 😁 Glad you gettin into some classic Santana, on of the best guitarists! I can get the connection to Hendrix too. "Oye Cómo Va", "Evil Ways", and "Jingo" are some great classics!!! Glad you getting into their songs before the 2000s! 40!
Musician Peter Green wrote this song for his band (Fleetwood Mac) in 1968. Santana covered the song in 1970 and made it a success on the charts. Santana's lead singer, Gregg Rolie sang several of the band's biggest hits, along with guitarist Neal Schon left in 1973 to form a new band...Journey.
Saw them play this song LIVE at the Pier in NYC and a storm was forming when a Lightening bolt ⚡came down and struck one of the amps, catching it on FIRE 🔥😲 The crowd close to the stage cheered because they thought it was a special effect! The Times wrote about it. It was absolutely spectacular.
I first heard Santana in 1970 or '71. They were fronting Crosby, Stills & Nash at a concert in Denver. I had no idea who they were at the time, but they sure changed that! My first concert. I was a freshman in college.
santana doesnt just play guitar -- he makes love to the guitar
Massive love. He does indeed meld a guitar into anything you wish or imagine it to be! Magical.... Dive very deep....
I believe Carlos does sing backing vocals on some songs like "Evil Ways".
@@craigreid7178 He sings Back to Rob Thomas on Smooth also
He more than makes love to his guitar he makes love to the listener as it really does grab you and pulls you close like a lovers embrace
The song was written by Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac and recorded by them in 1968. The 1970 Santana cover, sung by Gregg Rolie, became the popular version.
The original Fleetwood Mac were incredibly talented and love that music!
Original Fleetwood were insanely great! Peter Greene was so awesome- by far the best white blues band of all time and all so talented.
Carlos Santana mejoró la versión y la convirtió en una obra de arte

“Evil Ways” also a great one!
This was the music of our youth. We were totally spoiled.
Indeed. Today, it is hard to find music this good outside of Japan.
First three Santana albums are absolutely magical! SO so many great songs, such great music. This was [IMHO] peak Santana years.
The 4th album, Caravanserai, is the best to me.
@unicyclepeon I agree..Neal Schon added to that albums guitar sound and was a way better guitarist than Santana...sorry..he just is.
Greg Rolie was the original vocalist and organist for Santana starting in 1969. Neil Schon was also a member from 1971, joining at age 17. They both left the band in 1973 and were the founders of what would become Journey.
Hard to believe Greg was replaced as the singer for Journey. Of course it was Steve Perry so…
Finally classic Santana! Please go down this rabbit hole! Try to do live shows!
It's a classic Santana Cover of a song
It’s odd how my opinion of the song chances once I find out that it’s Greg Rawlings who is singing!
I know who Greg Rawlings is & I know who Schon is. I don’t normally know who playing the instruments! Impressive on their part, I would say. Great singing Gregg!
Santana. SMOOTH
He and Rob Thomas are magic together on that song
I Agree!! "Smooth" has to be one of the most 'catchy' songs ever !!
And with a dynamite Video to match!
You did yourself a favor by listening to this. Every time I hear it I appreciate the excellence of this total classic song.
They dont make songs like this anymore
Santana is the name of the band. I think sometimes newbies think it only refers to Carlos. The whole band was awesome!!
This is Gregg Rolie singing, he also played piano and sang for Journey before and after Steve Perry first joined the band. Neil Schon and Gregg Rolie were both in Santana and started Journey together. Watch a live video of this song, you will see Gregg singing it. 😊
Very underrated singer !.
There was interaction between Sanatan and Journey and other Bay Area Artists. Journey’s guitarist, Neal Schon, was asked by Santana to play with his band when Neal was in high school (prior to Journey). Neal never officially joined the band.
Yahhh dropping big names bro, I know all music and most word for word thousands I'm saying. Word
Cool insights, thanks!
Santana bolstered up an entire genre of rock that was very needed. The Latin flavors, and rythmns gave other artists a new field to explore.
Now, please react to Tim Buckley-"Sweet Surrender." You'll thank me.
The late 60's and the 70's were a great time for, as you said, "Real Music".🎼🎸🎶📻
On the LP the song didn't end... it transitioned into the next song, Oye Como Va. It's a sweet transition - you should hear it.
Santana has this smooth full-rounded sound. It's signature and amazing!
Smooth 😅
I can pick out Santana on guitar almost immediately he is one of my faves! He does sing and has a good voice but this was not him singing. He mostly sings backup. He can also make the guitar cry!
😮definitely check out Santana's Woodstock performance...it's unbelievable
Carlos admitted be on LSD 25 for the first at that performance. Guitar turned into a snake..
He, already, has.
@@LibraAllWoman oh, shoot I forgot

Yes!
oh my gosh such. great song! Great recommendation!
A must! The video the song, it's great.
Oye Como Va would be a great one to try next. A little more Latin influence.
Written by percussion legend Tito Puente!!
That's a great suggestion.
GREAT SONG!! They were so popular when I was growing up in the 70's. Love Carlos!!❤
Timeless guitarist. Magic track.

Santana personal fav. Loved dancing to this back in the day. This is a trip...in a good way. Bless the hands of the conga players!
I was doing volunteer work in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, laying in a hammock one night this came on the local radio station. It was a magical moment.
