Well, he went from "a nice mentor figure" to "suspicious guy" to "this guy has the final boss vibe from him" as the story went by. His interaction with the Five Elders is the starting point. And (SPOILERS FOR ANIME WATCHER ONLY) . . . . How he mercilessly threatened and destroyed Kidd pirates made people think that there are something else within this guy other than the good persona that we saw during the early One Piece.
when the kid pirates surrendered they got their ship destroyed too. and shanks pioneered the whole "let the weaker guy beat on you" thing, like he could have knocked them out without wasting their ship and possibly killing the dude. like luffy has spared people who did way more to his crew, so clearly shanks is atleast not an overly good guy, and many of his positive actions are starting to look more like him using luffy for his own aims.
It's so cool to me that you actually kind of believe Shanks is going to find it first. Like Luffy's been hyping up the One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates for the entire series, yet Shanks just goes "Hey Ben, let's go find it now. Might be a fun weekend" and there's so much power behind him being so lax about finding the world's greatest treasure

There is a theory that Shanks is half Celestial Dragon hence why he had an opportunity to meet the Gorosei. There's also a theory that Figarland Garling, the judge on World Nobles who's also former champion of God Valley is his dad as if you read the manga, his younger version look like Shanks. Also, Shanks was found by Roger in a chest in God Valley and raised by him. Maybe Garling abandon him since he was a baby in a chest and doesn't care about him and Shanks wants revenge after learning his true parentage for years to World Government and raised his ways to the top by playing both side. He wants to topple World Government and also destroying other pirates. He's using Luffy as his pawn because of Luffy ate the Nika Fruit (or formerly as Gum Gum Fruit) which he stole from Who's Who since there's also a theory he either wants to sell the fruit or give it to Ace who is Roger's son. And seeing how much Luffy becomes a bigger threat as his bounty is getting higher and higher, Shanks realizes Luffy's awakening is absolutely the biggest threat to the world as the reincarnation of Joy Boy and also Sun God Nika.
Shanks once every 10 years: "shows up and has a really cool moment with a one liner about luffy or the one piece" then proceeds to disappear for another 10 years.
Obviously as revealed so far Luffy's fruit (Awakening), is a necessary thing for the one piece (along side the 4 redo stones & the 3 old weapons). So, I think Shanks was awaiting for the awakening of Luffy's fruit to start his journey to claim the one piece for himself. & he was kind of manipulating luffy the entire time (Although, Shanks didn't intend to give the fruit to luffy, he ate it by accident and Shanks kind of found himself stuck with that, you either kill the boy and the fruit respawns someday in another place, or just invest emotionally in the kid and see where it goes)
I think he still cares about Luffy. But yeah, ever since Roger spoke his last words to Shanks, he hasn't been the same. Roger most likely gave him a mission to guide the next Joy Boy to fulfill the prophecy. With that, he went to Goa Kingdom to search for Ace, but ended up meeting Luffy instead. After Luffy ate the Nika Fruit, Shanks must have taken that as a twist of fate, (assuming he's aware of the freewill of mythical zoans). So yeah. It is his mission to guide Luffy to One Piece. Shanks doesn't have an uterior motive. He's an embodiement of selfless. Ever since his teens, he followed his destiny (most likely he'll die fighting Blackbeard to initiate the battle for Dawn). But again, it's up to Oda. I'm just using logic and pieces of confirmed data to establish realistic scenarios.
That would also perfectly tie in Shanks purposefully sacrificing his arm to “bet on the new era”. To me, Shanks and Blackbeard and maybe Imu are the most interesting characters in One Piece. I hope Oda does something interesting with Shanks.

i think people misinterpret this scene and unreasonably call shanks a possible villain, which i seriously doubt. I think shanks will be 1 of luffy's final tests to become pirate king, since he found out about luffy's gear 5. He could be a villain and betray luffy at the end, but i'm seriously gonna be shocked if that's the case considering how many good deeds shanks has actually done.
Not a villain, but possibly the final main antagonist for Luffy to fight. Antagonist role doesn't need to be evil, just the big foe our hero need to fight at climax, that all. I believe that what people been implying too. They just mix up antagonist and villain as the same role
the theory would be that gear 5/nika was needed, he made sure luffy ate it (they wouldn't just leave out a fruit that valuable in a bar), then helped him get to this point for his own aims, and there may be something where luffy has to die to get what shanks wants, but that's pure speculation. funny enough he's voice acted by the actor that plays char aznable and it's a very char aznable thing to do. Plus between his meeting with the gorosei, his comment to whitebeard about god valley, his viciousness to the kid pirates (yeah obv they arent great people but still, the good pirates of one piece usually use the minimum force required like the straw hats). this could all be a fakeout, but he doesn't seem to be that heroic figure implied by the early chapters, i doubt he'll be some one dimensional bad guy or anything but he seems pretty sus right now
I believe that the key to the entrance to One Piece is Nika's heartbeat (Luffy Gear 5) and since Luffy woke up Nika in Wano, Shanks will follow him from now on until he takes him to One Piece. Shanks will use Luffy to awaken the one piece that must be an entrance of an ancient city from the empty century or before.

My guess is that he was waiting to see if his bet was right , you see that he knew the importance of gomu gomu , but maybe wanted to see if truly luffy was able to awaken it , and his reaction on this episode shows it , he was right, now why waiting 22 years ? when the kid pirates surrendered they got their ship destroyed too. and shanks pioneered the whole "let the weaker guy beat on you" thing, like he could have knocked them out without wasting their ship and possibly killing the dude. like luffy has spared people who did way more to his crew, so clearly shanks is atleast not an overly good guy, and many of his positive actions are starting to look more like him using luffy for his own aims.
It's so cool to me that you actually kind of believe Shanks is going to find it first. Like Luffy's been hyping up the One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates for the entire series, yet Shanks just goes "Hey Ben, let's go find it now. Might be a fun weekend" and there's so much power behind him being so lax about finding the world's greatest treasure

There is a theory that Shanks is half Celestial Dragon hence why he had an opportunity to meet the Gorosei. There's also a theory that Figarland Garling, the judge on World Nobles who's also former champion of God Valley is his dad as if you read the manga, his younger version look like Shanks. Also, Shanks was found by Roger in a chest in God Valley and raised by him. Maybe Garling abandon him since he was a baby in a chest and doesn't care about him and Shanks wants revenge after learning his true parentage for years to World Government and raised his ways to the top by playing both side. He wants to topple World Government and also destroying other pirates. He's using Luffy as his pawn because of Luffy ate the Nika Fruit (or formerly as Gum Gum Fruit) which he stole from Who's Who since there's also a theory he either wants to sell the fruit or give it to Ace who is Roger's son. And seeing how much Luffy becomes a bigger threat as his bounty is getting higher and higher, Shanks realizes Luffy's awakening is absolutely the biggest threat to the world as the reincarnation of Joy Boy and also Sun God Nika.

That scene when Shanks says to go get the One Piece is so good. The way the colours and the vibe are make it so dramatic and chilling.
Shanks once every 10 years: "shows up and has a really cool moment with a one liner about luffy or the one piece" then proceeds to disappear for another 10 years.

Obviously as revealed so far Luffy's fruit (Awakening), is a necessary thing for the one piece (along side the 4 redo stones & the 3 old weapons). So, I think Shanks was awaiting for the awakening of Luffy's fruit to start his journey to claim the one piece for himself. & he was kind of manipulating luffy the entire time (Although, Shanks didn't intend to give the fruit to luffy, he ate it by accident and Shanks kind of found himself stuck with that, you either kill the boy and the fruit respawns someday in another place, or just invest emotionally in the kid and see where it goes)

I think he still cares about Luffy. But yeah, ever since Roger spoke his last words to Shanks, he hasn't been the same. Roger most likely gave him a mission to guide the next Joy Boy to fulfill the prophecy. With that, he went to Goa Kingdom to search for Ace, but ended up meeting Luffy instead. After Luffy ate the Nika Fruit, Shanks must have taken that as a twist of fate, (assuming he's aware of the freewill of mythical zoans). So yeah. It is his mission to guide Luffy to One Piece. Shanks doesn't have an uterior motive. He's an embodiement of selfless. Ever since his teens, he followed his destiny (most likely he'll die fighting Blackbeard to initiate the battle for Dawn). But again, it's up to Oda. I'm just using logic and pieces of confirmed data to establish realistic scenarios.

i think people misinterpret this scene and unreasonably call shanks a possible villain, which i seriously doubt. I think shanks will be 1 of luffy's final tests to become pirate king, since he found out about luffy's gear 5. He could be a villain and betray luffy at the end, but i'm seriously gonna be shocked if that's the case considering how many good deeds shanks has actually done.
Not a villain, but possibly the final main antagonist for Luffy to fight. Antagonist role doesn't need to be evil, just the big foe our hero need to fight at climax, that all. I believe that what people been implying too. They just mix up antagonist and villain as the same role

the theory would be that gear 5/nika was needed, he made sure luffy ate it (they wouldn't just leave out a fruit that valuable in a bar), then helped him get to this point for his own aims, and there may be something where luffy has to die to get what shanks wants, but that's pure speculation. funny enough he's voice acted by the actor that plays char aznable and it's a very char aznable thing to do. Plus between his meeting with the gorosei, his comment to whitebeard about god valley, his viciousness to the kid pirates (yeah obv they arent great people but still, the good pirates of one piece usually use the minimum force required like the straw hats). this could all be a fakeout, but he doesn't seem to be that heroic figure implied by the early chapters, i doubt he'll be some one dimensional bad guy or anything but he seems pretty sus right now

I believe that the key to the entrance to One Piece is Nika's heartbeat (Luffy Gear 5) and since Luffy woke up Nika in Wano, Shanks will follow him from now on until he takes him to One Piece. Shanks will use Luffy to awaken the one piece that must be an entrance of an ancient city from the empty century or before.

Why does it seem like even though he said he doesn't want to see luffy it's like he's trying to bait luffy Into going after him. I know its partially because kaido and big mom are out of the picture but why now. Luffy did declare that he would surpass Shanks so Shanks finally making a move will give Luffy even more a challenge.
My guess is that he was waiting to see if his bet was right , you see that he knew the importance of gomu gomu , but maybe wanted to see if truly luffy was able to awaken it , and his reaction on this episode shows it , he was right, now why waiting 22 years ? He was waiting joyboy , waiting to see if all that prophecy and talk he heard in roger ship was true , for whatever reason, there's something tied with joy boy and the treasure , remember roger was too early there.
I don't know if your skipping over the story but luffy already decided to go after shanks when he formed the alliance with kaido so them fighting is inevitable and as for why shanks would go after the one piece now big mom and kaido are out of the picture and arent hiding behind their walls its the perfect time.
