New York City... Right around the turn of the century... it was common for apartments to have bedrooms built on top of each other with very thin floors. Another commonality was hearing the upstairs neighbor take off one shoe... drop it, and then of course repeat the process with the other side. This would leave downstairs neighbors “waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
This was the birth of an American expression - signifying “anticipation of things to come.” And THAT, leads us to our topic today.
There's days where I wake up on the proverbial “right side of the bed.” There's a bounce in my step. Music sounds amazing. I'm productive, optimistic, social, sexual, playful, and I feel connected to others. These days can be a nice break from the depression, agitation, and paranoia that goes along with my illness.
As my self-awareness has grown, I started to notice these little fears that would taint the good days. I'd be out with friends, and start to worry about enjoying my time... I was afraid of possible hypomania progressing into full blown mania. I was afraid that the good moments wouldn't last. I was also afraid of the depressive fallout if I went to high. These are super valid concerns - and they often prevented me from enjoying my life to the fullest.
So I guess the big question is... How do we cultivate a healthy sense of caution... Where we can enjoy life, but still know when there are signs of trouble?

I just became a patreon member last week. You've helped me be a more understanding and helpful parent to my 17 year old son. He was just diagnosed with bp2 this past year. He's a sweet, lovely person and very talented musician/song writer. He just had to be hospitalized, admitted after 3 weeks in bed today. This is the 3rd admittance in the past year and a half. You give me immense help and encouragement. I know it's very difficult, but you work and you are life affirming.

Honestly I feel that I fear and feel suspicious of enjoying life too much. I don't want a "really good day" because I have to ask, "Is this the start of another bipolar episode? Is this another start of a new flare up?" At this point I prefer the certainty and predictability of a bipolar slog than the tumultuousness and emphermerality of feeling really good. My worst episode wasn't insidious and bad because I felt bad. It was because I felt good doing things that I thought were good for me and others but weren't.

Ahhh I was just talking about this today! I love my new job and already am moving up after 2 months. I’m so afraid to take it on in fear I will crash and they’ll know I’m a “fake”.
I was recently diagnosed about a year and a half ago at 30yrs old. My whole life now makes sense.
I haven’t held a job for longer than a year my entire adult life. So many highs followed by suicide attempts.
I’m so blessed to be in s good place, but dread when it will end

After a long mixed episode this summer I was waiting for that shoe to drop so that I could have a deep rest (well, we all know what that means). Now I'm tired of resting and pulling myself off the bed as some kind of useless blanket. My 'rest' is not that bad these days, and I think I'm doing great, but I'm still somehow waiting for the shoe to drop again and bring me energy and joy (the first one is what I always miss the most). I know my manic standards are still too high and I appreciate every little thing I do when even breathing sounds as a pretty tough business to do, but sometimes it feels like waiting for the sun to rise again.
Well, I did not want to write about myself, but your videos are something that feels like home - most literally, and home is where you feel like speaking about lots of different stuff you care about.
I just want to say thank you - Rob, the Team, every single person in the comments whose stories I enjoy or relate to.

"anticipatory anxiety".... I think it's too easy to view this type of anxiety as a tool, some kind of necessity... something that helps us keep things in mind so we can prepare in how to deal with the future. Sad thing is, it has almost no constructive purpose. And just like your second story in the video, I feel my parents taught me how to do this... like we can just have one enjoyable perspective or something. They thought they were teaching me how to deal with the world by teaching me all the dangers and downsides to worry over, too. My mom has used this phrase "waiting for that other shoe to drop" so many times in my life, I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard it. My husband likes to tell me, and my daughter, "If you really want to worry and feel bad, there will never be a shortage of things to fixate on to keep you in that mindset.... choose something else to think about, because you have the freedom to do so." We truly do have the freedom to choose happiness almost any moment of any day. Thank you for another great video!

Yeah, this makes sense. I'm in a place right now that I've been in for awhile. Within this place, I've gone up and down, coming close to "the end" twice. I'm living each day not knowing what my next move should be or will be and have several different parts of my life that I simply don't know how they're going to go. Some of those unknowns affect other unknowns and make it impossible to take control of my thoughts and fears. I'm on a dark, winding road with no exit or turns in sight.
This is a fantastic message! It definitely added a little perspective to my current state. Even so, it remains to be seen what's going to happen, what I'm going to do (or not do), etc. I'm kinda thinking a lot about giving up. I'm tired. So tired. Mentally, emotionally, physically.... I'm just so tired...

@@PolarWarriors Thanks... I actually downloaded the app and joined the group the day he posted that video. I've been in most meetings since. However, I really need to be sure to be there tomorrow morning because you're absolutely right- I need the support, feedback, and love. We're all like family there. Since the original room fell through, the mods have started a new one. Same basic structure, slightly more casual, still the same love and support.
As much as I would love to join Patreon, I haven't been at my job for 2 months. I cannot reasonably commit to $10 per month without that solid income. It sucks, but these are the consequences of my actions. And lack of actions. Since yesterday, something new and rather serious popped up, so now I got that going.... I'm really, genuinely ready to give up. I'm not going to yet, but it's a huge possibility if something doesn't change soon. Hopefully the group will be helpful tomorrow.
Thanks again for your reply! And I'm sorry for putting all this here. I guess it needs to go somewhere and this seemed like an appropriate place. Anyway, have a great day! 🙂

The timing of this video is great, of course for me. I'm in the middle of a hypomanic episode and I can predict how long it will last depending on my earlier experience. And even though I'm super productive, helpful and doing all the good stuff for others, I can't stop thinking what will happen when this state eventually ends. I'm worried about the plans I made for the next two weeks because I know that time is around when all the crushing happens. It's hard to enjoy the beautiful road when you know there is a cliff by the end of it. Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work!

I believe our friendship and the belief that we will never betray each other has helped him learn to make good decisions. Jesse is aware of himself and the stigma of mental illness. My approach has been to point out that he is not the only one and that I am not so different. Progress can be slow, but I am quick to celebrate the successes and note the failures in passing. Being bipolar has been very challenging. I was diagnosed at 23 years old. My first episode was triggered from stress during college. I was with my ex boyfriend at the time who ended up leaving me last year after we were engaged for half a year when I had my last episode. I ended up throwing water on a cop during my episode and instead of hospitalizing me at the time, i was arrested. i was so incoherent that I was there for a month. it wasn't until i injured myself in jail and needed surgery that I got the treatment that I needed for my episode. after i left jail my partner had enough time to reflect and ended our six year relationship. It crushed me. Its almost been a year since the breakup and i still think about him daily. Being bipolar is incredibly difficult and I struggle heavily with depression and think about ending it all more often than I would like to admit. Your videos do bring some comfort but it is still very hard to live with this illness and accept the consequences of mania. But I do appreciate you taking the time to share your insight and experience.

Having your fiance end things must have been so painful. I find I can relate to what you said in a couple ways. I was also diagnosed at 23 years old and my boyfriend at the time ended things after an episode. Long story but I was crushed too. I hope that you are able to find healing for your heart and peace for your mind. It can be such a difficult journey at times. Please hang in there and don't give up. I make those things that I worry about happen (self sabotage). So it feels like a 100% chance of something bad happening. When things are good I know I'm going to mess it up, and I do. I don't know how to stop, but I'm learning to keep going even after I quit or mess something up ( a job, studies etc). So even if I mess things up and quit, I still go out and try again and not let anyone judge my pace. The more I keep trying, the better I become at enduring challenges and I don't quit as soon or self sabotage as often as I used to. My life is constant trial and error with either huge success or complete failure. I'm very good at starting things and I'm always the best in the room at jobs and in classrooms... however when that depression hits I just don't want to try anymore and I get crippling anxiety to do things that I've been doing exceptionably well for weeks. The hardest part of bipolar is justifying it to friends and family because I know they see it as an excuse. It is not but I'm done trying to justify my challenges. I'll just keep trying my best no matter what that looks like to others.

Robert thank you once again for putting your all out there and being so candid. I learned from this video, and not just about me but about you too. I know I've said we're just alike and in many ways we are but I know more how people like us who experience so many of the same feelings each one of us reacts differently. I've never let myself stop once I get going on a manic episode. Even though I know I will pay for it heavily in the future. I just go until I can't then I crash. Trying to explain to my brother one time what it's like being bipolar I told him you just do stuff now and worry about the consequences later. And my childhood was great except I was always the cute little boy who could play guitar and had some people try to get to me sexually but somehow I escaped everyone until I was 14 and made it with the 18 year old neighbor girl down the street then a very nasty situation with a georgius 28 year old married lady with 2 kids later the same year. But I lost my Dad, my rock to a heart attack when I was 19. Then life got crazy. But I handled my bipolar really well until my last divorce and then I had a nervous breakdown. That's when the PTSD set in and I worry about everything all the time. Thanks for the good advice on that! And thanks for mentioning trauma. I have a mess going on in my head. Bipolar II, Seasonal Affective Disorder and PTSD and maybe CTE from the many concussions I had due to my reckless lifestyle. Still after saying that about me I honestly felt sorry for you in a way I never have before. You told me once you were here for me and now I'm telling you I'm here for you also.

Rob, I was looking for a email address for you but couldn't find anything. This is really more appropriate for a p.m., but oh well I still feel like this is a good topic for a video. So I know you said before that you don't like talking about famous people with bipolar but I think Kanye west is a good subject for an example of the famous with this illness! I DO NOT AGREE with his statements he has made over Twitter and IG AT ALL!! But I feel like all the stuff he is going thru has alot to with his behaviors. And bc of that it is soooo sad that this man w so much influence has this illness bc the media just go all kind of crazy on him making him look sooo bad and do not share that he is very sick! So people just think he is a crazy racist asshole! I wonder where his family is ? I really hate that no one ever mentions his illness they just go on bashing him with out having any empathy! I again do not agree with him but I do know what it's like to have alot going on and be triggered and say ALOT OF STUPID things, but I have the luxury of it not getting out to the world so the media can bash me and my whole lively hood go up in flames. I'm sorry just a thought? I just think he is a good example of how to explain this illness to someone that doesn't understand. And I pray Kanye receives help 🙏 and for anyone that may see this post to remember to have empathy twords ppl with bipolar when they say stupid things when triggered we do not always mean the terrible impulsive things we say. Thanks and God bless!

People with Late Onset Bipolar Disorder (over the age of 50 - most people are diagnosed by age 21 or young adulthood) should be investigated for bvFTD or other degenerative brain disorders to make sure, as this is uncommon to be diagnosed so late in life with Bipolar. We are having my husband tested soon, (MRI scan, genetic testing and other tests, questionnaires that differ from normal psych tests), as he was given the Bipolar diagnosis at 54. Just wanting to make people aware, not scare anyone! The behavior issues manifest so closely, that it's worth checking into. Most people will not be diagnosed with degenerative brain issues, but always better to know what is going on for sure.

Thanks for the video. I'm really struggling lately and the shoe has been waiting to drop for half a year. So many things are going well, I'm on a great path, but I fear there are 2 or 3 potential wrecking balls are about to come down on me, and one in particular is all it would take (and in my brain this is imminent. This video helped a bit, just a reminder that my struggle is genuine, my experience is real. I have been spending more time around people who do not struggle with mental illness. I keep getting confused as though my symptoms are not real, and I just have to shift a behavior here or a thought there and everything will be fine. I wish I had a pocket textbook to pull out and convince people its not so easy to manage this stuff. A clinical disorder is serious business, on one hand I'm healthier than I've been in over a decade, but the stress is causing some serious internal issues.

Hi Rob, I totally get what you are saying, I've been there, I think it was in fragile times. There's also another side to this - I've realised that when I've come out of my worst depressions, I've become involuntarily infused with such a deep relief and joy that I did not disappear and die in it, that it goes into everything, it causes an underlying euphoria that gives humour into so many situations, and just an underlying joy that I think is like a controlled explosion of thankfulness. This, I believe, is something anyone can experience.
