    Im not sure if im wrong or im right... Compresive is not posive and tesile stress is negative??? If the top part is compressive and we apply the axial/direct force on the positive y axis, our axia/Compresive stress wont be positive??

      for this chapter, it doesn't matter if you assume compressive as positive or negative, as long as at the end you will be able to tell if your resulted stress will be compressive or tensile. Henry Wickens assume compressive at positive. however, Du Toit use Tensile as positive.
