I love hover flies so much, they're such adorable little things and they're so important for pollination and pest control! We have plenty of them here, I like to sit outside on my hammock chair and watch them zip around in the air.
Nice! Thanks for this, I love my hoverflies and idk it’s taken so long for me to look at their life cycle. You are automatically a king for this channel, love it 🐝
Syrphid (Hover) flies are a gardener's BEST FRIEND! When I first saw them, didn't know what they were but when I saw it feeding on aphids, made me GLAD I didn't kill or remove them!
Live in east-central Pennsylvania, USA and there's lots of Hover flies over here! One plant that really attracts them is "Sweet Alyssum!" If you don't have them planted yet, by all means do so! They have a light sweet fragrance and the Syrphid flies LOVE them! Put them near your other plants and that will boost the Hover fly population in your garden! ;-)
Thank you! On my next trip to a nursery I will look for some. I was honestly amazed when I saw them feeding for the first time. It's kind of scary but magical at the same time. Now I am always on a search for them so I can put them near the newest aphid outbreak areas :)
Yes I did learn something new, that their larvae hunt aphids and use their empty shells to camouflage! That's amazing! I am looking into how I can make my garden more hoverfly friendly, as I have seen very little of them this year.
Glad to know I never have killed one, they definitely do well with mimicry to the point where a person that does fear wasps avoids hover flies just as much. Of course by now I’m 28 and have learned these little insects are social and eat sweat and salt from your hand it’s wild as heck. Love them. Absolutely love them. I literally love letting them land in my hand.
Do you have the rat tail maggots in your balcony pond then? Do you find they stink a bit? I guess there is good air flow up there so it probably doesn't matter too much.?
Hey, yes you are right! I have tons of aphids :( but didnt have much to take care of them. Since building up the amount of flowers, I am seeing an increase in hoverflies and they are sticking around so they are helping me take care of the aphids, the adults pollinate for me and they are mating then laying eggs up here too. So I am getting pest control and then pollinators from the one species. :)
I have plenty in Devon, I’m rural though. They are definitely magical, I chat to them as they hover in front my face. It’s lovely when they land on me, they seem to enjoy one of my tops particularly , it’s very blue

Welcome to another episode of wild urban balcony series lol, I love it
Who knew there'd be so much drama on one balcony? 🤣
@@CloudGardenerUK It's actually pretty entertaining. Here's to more beneficial insects visiting your garden.
@@nareegreel there's more to come next week 🤦🏾♀️🤣
I have made a new pond and one of the first things I have in it is hoverfly larvae. Am so glad they are so useful. Great video
Hi I’m new and loved this and all the info …and your garden. Thank you!✌🏻😘

Would you please inform the size of its pupae was found?
Need for study purpose
Thank you
It was around a couple of centimetres. Really quite a large pupae :)

My ignorance, I imagined the higher your garden is the lower the pest pressure? And less pollinators?

@@CloudGardenerUK That's awesome bro! You've got your own personal garden protection squad.
Notice they hover right in front of your eyes given you a feeling of being in a trance.
