The album on the shelf is Betty Davis - Self Titled (1973) in case anyone was wondering. It's an in your face funk/soul gem which laid the groundwork for outspoken explorations of female sexuality in popular music and influenced artists like Madonna and Prince

Fortitude is one of my favorite metal albums in the past few years. Between the proggy music and the conscious lyrics, I just feel like Gojira is bringing something to mainstream metal that hasn't really been seen in a while and isn't as prominent as I wish it were. The Chant absolutely slaps btw. I'd give the album an 8.5/10 personally.
Yea I was surprised by Anthony’s fairly tepid review here honestly.. this album is amazing to me, The Chant especially .. baffled by how critical he was of that one
Love to see Melon reviewing Gojira in a full review rather than in a YUNOREVIEW. Gojira are far from perfect but they do so, so many things better than 95% of modern metal acts imo.
It’s already mine (from this record). The whispered vocals makes it seem like an alt metal version of Agalloch - something I never knew I needed until now
The Chant is personally one of my favorites on the album and since I’m a huge fan of Korn’s music, I can easily excuse the wonky and not-quite-there vocals. Amazonia is my definite favorite and quite possibly my overall favorite Gojira song next to From The Sky
The "jaw harp" you meantion on Amazonia is actually Berimbau, a typical instrument of the area. It does sound like a Jaw Harp and makes it odd because we cant disassociate it
The train crossing ding ding to me sounded first like an alarm when a storm is coming or something. Which given what Mario, the drummer, is able to play here is fairly accurate imho
He does it throughout their entire discography... multiple times in fortitude even. Mario keeps a consistent beat of 4th or 16th notes on either his snare, ride bell or kick drum to keep a head bang feel to his rhythm. The ride bell has become his signature sound.
I love the pounding and spiraling guitar riffs on Another World as well as the pure emotion behind Joe's harsh wailing vocals! Gojira to me is like Death, Tool and Korn combined. Truly Gojira is one of my favorite bands! Fortitude is emotional, powerful, complex, just overall crazy good. Gojira is a force of progressive metal nature.
To give a more indepth comment then just saying another world is bad global warming. The whole album is simplified in comparison to anything gojira has done before. Safe and mediocre. Anything that sounds complex is a rehashed and slightly altered from their earlier works. All the new bits of experimentation is extremely safe or just bad hard rock singles. There is nothing ground breaking on fortitude. I do wish I could actually hear what so many people are hearing but at best this album is a 2.5 /5. There is nothing on it that brings me wanting to come back when I can listen to Mars to Sirius, the way of all flesh, the link and les enfaunt sauvage. Those albums doing every idea and concept that fortitude has but far better.
That’s silly. He’s here to review the music. I think Mario is one of the greatest drummers of all time and a huge inspiration for me but it’s not like Anthony is obligated to learn every band member’s name of everything he listens to, regardless of their talent.
Awesome that Anthony can appreciate Gojira’s approach. Their melodic material is fantastic, making up for the move away from Death metal with huge atmosphere & emotional depth. Not as good as pre-magma but still Gojira
Definitely, magma is my least favorite album by Gojira, it's still good though, but some of the songs felt lazy. I wouldn't say any song on fortitude is lazy but some could have been done better
The Chant is the rock/metal earworm of the year. Pretty decent album, not totally blown away, but it's a grower. Needed a few more blistering Mario drumming tracks tbh. Fortitude is a Diet Magma, a Magma Lite...
This album made a fanboy of the band, it's perfect. I really had no specific expectations before it, I just knew that I would probably like a lot of it, but I didn't expect to feel such a strong connection with it.
Love the album but what was the vocal intro to Hold On .. Ive been grinding and grinding? Sounds like a rap lyric more than a Gojira lyric, a fair review thou, thank you!

Magma I can appreciate, especially Pray, but it's a different stylez that I don't like as much. Fortitude is a step heavier than magma but also proggier. Definitely agree that the worst part is concept, as well as some very ambitious moments that overstretch. But this is their finest work in SO long. Love this album, seriously, lol.
As a diehard Gojira fan, I don’t love this one. First time I’ve ever been disappointed by this band. I enjoyed magma, I thought the simplification and focus on atmosphere was a refreshing direction, although the songwriting was lacking a *little*, especially on the radio single Stranded. I had hoped they wouldn’t continue in that direction for this very reason. The layered vox were really cool as a background reverb-y atmospheric thing, but now that they’ve been brought to the forefront and they’re writing songs around em, they sound a bit awkward. Also I really wish mario stepped up the technicality a bit more, as there were moments that were just begging for nasty drum fills and left me feeling super let down when they didn’t get them (like the drum break in Another World and that simplistic tom fill in Amazonia). I was dying for some sick-ass grooves and fills. The snare-ride thing Born for one thing is the coolest one on the record imo. The other few instances of technicality feel forced and lack the intentionality and effect of past endeavors. They stripped down their sound too much for me on this one, and the complex songwriting that they are known for did not seem to be there. It’s certainly not a BAD record, but just not what I want from a band like Gojira, who I come to for their energy, their technicality, and their ability to channel extreme emotional release. I’d give it a light 6 as well.
It was a solid 6 for me. Some great riffs and incredible drumming but about half way in I found myself getting bored and losing interest and not much was able to gain back my attention. It's better than Magma, but pales in comparison to TWoAF or FMtS, or even L'enfant Sauvage.
Agreed. I really enjoy the album, but on first listen I did find my mind kind of drifting in the middle. The Trails brought me back to focus though, and Grind was a sick ending. Overall there's not a song I dislike!
I think it just seemed so negative because the things he was pointing out that he didn’t like are actually kinda small and won’t ruin the song he’s just gotta be critical so it seems worse than it is
I found the bell in into the storm playful with the guitars, overall makes a fun polyrhythmic. Also he uses a very heavy ride with a huge bell, that makes a sound that you cant really turn down volume wise.
Mario’s iconic sounds include a constant rhythm with either snare/kick/cymbal bell. The Lyrical content and the ride bell add a sense of danger. It’s badass.
Dude, completely missed the point of the bell cymbal being used in 'Into The Storm'. It serves as a continual warning that danger is imminent, the siren sound being created fades in and out but is always present. It drives the track perfectly and Mario's intensity is superb. Dude, you'll come to love it sooner or later!
Love that you glossed over the track "Sphinx", I genuinely think it's best track from the album. Also, lots of lengthy outros on the album, which I'm not sure I'm into 😅
They’re a progressive groove metal band. Their outros offer so much substance and replay-ability and are long if they are trying to get a certain feel/groove across. At least it isn’t “The way of all flesh” long.
Was not expecting a 7 in this review from the Melon given his past dislike for some of the band's stuff. The first 5 songs of this thing are just "conscious bangers" one after the other. And although The Chant is definitely not my favorite Gojira song, you gotta listen to Fortitude and The Chant in the car LOUD and just vibe out. The song will be so good live. Sphinx is fantastic obviously. Into the Storm is a good song,, not really into the cheesier, repetitive lyrics but I believe it'll be a great live song. The Trails only gets better each time I listen to it. And Grind? Best ending to an album I've heard in a long time. First leg of the track is dark and almost hopeless talking about grinding through today's society and the laws that make us cringe, turning into an instrumental on the back half of the song that sounds hopeful. To anyone reading this, thanks :). I'm just a Gojira nerd that is glad that, although they have softened up and gone slightly more commercial, they haven't lost who they are. This album feels like such a good mix of their old stuff and Magma era stuff. 9/10 for me.
Gotta disagree about The Chant. Actually thought it was very beautiful. Especially when you watch the music video. There's this amazing melancholic feeling going on. I just loved the melody, soloing and the little screams/growsl placed in there too work quite well.
My favored thing about the song is when the second verse comes in a tambourine starts jingling and it’s so beautiful cause it’s paired with joes vocals falling apart. I love it.
I've interpreted the "Train crossing" sound to be because when a hurricane, or a storm if you will, gets closer and closer it sounds like a train. Only gripe with this is that hurricanes sound like "Chuga Chuga" not "Ding ding"
I enjoy the new album. I'm so happy to hear more Jean-Michel on this one. I always miss that bass in their music so to hear him shine a bit more on this project is nice.
Gj dude, just found your channel and dig it. I'm currently mega hyped on "Fortitude". Can we also appreciate the album cover art? It's such a worthy compliment to the music itself. Best album I've listened to for a while!
I complete agree with you on MOST of what you say about the album. Into The Storm is an amazing track. The cymbal does sound like a train crossing bell and I’m not sure if that way intended or not? Perhaps trains do not have this sound in France? I appreciate your criticism to this album and not just fan boy it even though I almost wanted you to. 😁 - I will say that it’s gets better with more listens.
I like that we all get different things from the music we listen to. I’ve listened through the album about 4 times so far. It has grown on me each playthrough. I think the only one I don’t go back to is The Chant, but for different reasons than A-Fan. I definitely like this album better than The Way Of All Flesh (though that one has my favorite Gojira song of all time on it).
You like it more than The way of all flesh? Fucking how. Like regardless of the fact that fortitude is a good album the way of all flesh conceptually and in quality of songs is basically legendary. Has unique songs like sight to behold that is super catchy, The art of dying, toxic garbage island, Vacuity. literally all of them are better than the best song on fortitude. Yeah I know its all opinion but like..how?
Not sure i really agree with melon's thoughts on Fortitude/ The Chant. I'm a big fan of their early work and even own Terra Incognita on Vinyl, so i'm a big fan of their heavy stuff but i really think those two tracks are really catchy and really embrace Gojira's softer side really well. The album is a Light 8 for me. FYI Grind is the best track.
Gojira’s made 3 of the best metal records of all time consecutively, being From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh, and L’Enfant Sauvage. I’m glad to say that Magma and Fortitude, while obviously inferior to the big 3, are still fantastic records
I’m pretty sure it is a jaw harp. They’ve used it in the link. I think they wanted to stick to a “Gojira” sound while still trying to get a Brazilian feel for the track.

One of my favorites on the album. Just a fantastic vibe in that one.
I love it too. It's a sleeper, and a damn good one.
so glad you've been reviewing metal lately. this and the new corpse album are my favorite records this year so far
The Chant is personally one of my favorites on the album and since I’m a huge fan of Korn’s music, I can easily excuse the wonky and not-quite-there vocals. Amazonia is my definite favorite and quite possibly my overall favorite Gojira song next to From The Sky
I LOVE FROM THE SKY AND AMAZONIA TOO
For some reason when Gojira does something "not-quite-there" as you put it, I just find it really endearing. I don't mind it not being perfect.
@@guitaridiot9000 that’s a beautiful point of view
The "jaw harp" you meantion on Amazonia is actually Berimbau, a typical instrument of the area. It does sound like a Jaw Harp and makes it odd because we cant disassociate it

The train crossing ding ding to me sounded first like an alarm when a storm is coming or something. Which given what Mario, the drummer, is able to play here is fairly accurate imho

I kinda like it more with that. Adds anxiety to the track (HA I SAID TRACK AND WE'RE TAKING ABOUT TRAINS HAHA)
He does it throughout their entire discography... multiple times in fortitude even. Mario keeps a consistent beat of 4th or 16th notes on either his snare, ride bell or kick drum to keep a head bang feel to his rhythm. The ride bell has become his signature sound.
Personally I love The Chant, reminds me of The Shooting Star
It was one of my favourites on the album, shocked that melon thought it was bad
To me that's exactly the problem with that track. It sounds like a reheated Shooting Star without Shooting Star's amazing main riff.
yea, because the two are related in theme, lyrical and musical, like pink floyd's pigs of the wings I & II
The Sepultura influences are really there in Amazonia. When i saw them live they even played Territory like 2 times at the end of the show
I love the pounding and spiraling guitar riffs on Another World as well as the pure emotion behind Joe's harsh wailing vocals! Gojira to me is like Death, Tool and Korn combined. Truly Gojira is one of my favorite bands! Fortitude is emotional, powerful, complex, just overall crazy good. Gojira is a force of progressive metal nature.
Excellent input
Thank you :)
Though another world is just a worse version of global warming.
It’s gotten to a point where I can tell what the score will be based on the shirt melon is wearing
well, that's more or less the point... that's why he has certain shirts for certain scores. He's been doing it for years now.
The least you could do was learn the bands member’s names. Mario’s drumming style is iconic.
Ya that kinda pissed me off
Isn't that the point or am I missing something?
That’s silly. He’s here to review the music. I think Mario is one of the greatest drummers of all time and a huge inspiration for me but it’s not like Anthony is obligated to learn every band member’s name of everything he listens to, regardless of their talent.

Awesome that Anthony can appreciate Gojira’s approach. Their melodic material is fantastic, making up for the move away from Death metal with huge atmosphere & emotional depth. Not as good as pre-magma but still Gojira

The Chant is the rock/metal earworm of the year.
Pretty decent album, not totally blown away, but it's a grower. Needed a few more blistering Mario drumming tracks tbh. Fortitude is a Diet Magma, a Magma Lite...
Stealing this, I've been calling it Magma Pt. 2 but that's a more accurate description.
The only gripe I really have with this album is that Joe’s Vocal tracks are too quiet, I wish his vocals were more present in the mix

06:19 The drumming on this track, especially the herta groove, is probably my favourite on the record. I actually like the sound of the ride.
True, although I think I like magma better tbh
if MTBMB was the most positive 5/10, this is the most negative 7/10 on his channel hands down lol
I think it just seemed so negative because the things he was pointing out that he didn’t like are actually kinda small and won’t ruin the song he’s just gotta be critical so it seems worse than it is
@JRK10 exactly
The Trails is one of the most beautiful Gojira songs, or in general. Soothing and creative.
Dude what the hell, The Chant is one of the highlights of the album
Disagree, The Chant is by far the weakest track Gojira has ever made.

Weird to hear someone talking about Gojira and call Mario "the drummer"
It’s a critic reviewing to pull views not necessarily to pull substance from the music
I feel like fortitude took everything I liked about Magma and just made it better by adding some of their old sound back into the album.
I love it.
You can tell Another World really grew on him.
Honestly I wasn’t super into it when it first dropped either, but in the context of the album I like it a lot now.
It grew on me so hard. Listened to it hundreds of times before the album dropped and still repeat it once the album dropped
my favorite on the track, such a mesmerizing psychedelic guitar progression
I've interpreted the "Train crossing" sound to be because when a hurricane, or a storm if you will, gets closer and closer it sounds like a train. Only gripe with this is that hurricanes sound like "Chuga Chuga" not "Ding ding"
Never in my life did I think melon would do a Gojira review, and even less expect it to get a good score
