Specifically the link alive. It brings a bombastic and ferocious energy to songs from The Link that was missing because of the sterile mixing. Remembrance is one of my favorite Gojira songs because of it.
They are among the best bands when it comes to live mixing. I suppose there are gigs where the setlist and convolution because of festival scheduling can prevent them at times from getting a good mix, but when they do (e.g. gojira at red rocks, brixton academy, Pol'and Rock, The Link Alive) it makes their studio albums look weak in comparison.

Did you happen to catch them at The Mod Club in 2009 with Dillinger?? That was my first time seeing either band, and one of the best shows I've ever been to. Holy Shit Snacks.
A 3.5 on the link is definitely deserved. It seems a lot of reviewers here on RUclips don't like it but I've truthfully always just felt they all influenced each others opinion on that album and didn't really give it a chance lol. A very solid heavy more death metal sounding gojira record with hints of their future sound sprinkled in. It's the perfect middle ground album between terra and mars
I saw Gojira in 2017 opening for Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica in Vancouver! This was the year after Magma was released! By the way, you gotta do a Reviewing Every Bolt Thrower album video sometime.
Yes fortitude is equivalent to the black album. But let's be honest. Each of those albums in their respective sounds. Has some absolute bangers. Grind, Sphinx, New Found, and Amazonia
very he’s to say, but personally 1. from mars to sirius 2. the link alive 3. Le’nfant sauvage 4. terra incognita 5. the link 6. the way of all flesh 7. magma 8. fortitude (their whole catalog is outstanding)
You mentioned “Amazonia” being Gojira doing metal for the radio. I come across this often. So here’s my perspective - I live in Greece. There’s absolutely no way any Gojira song would play on the radio here. No Slipknot , no lamb of god , no screaming or thrashing on the radio . That’s why some people not from Greece talk shit about Slipknot being Radio friendly , and here were like “wtf are they talking about? I d give anything to have Slipknot or Gojira on the radio here!” Seriously the Rock stations of our country just play the same Gun n roses, Rory Gallagher, oasis , rem, nirvana , Rhcpeppers - you get the idea - and it’s the same fkn songs too , absolutely no deep cuts !
Well said! I always wonder what radio station people are listening to :) The slowest and lightest Gojira song would be the heaviest thing on the radio where I live.
My favorite Gojira album changes with my periods of listening. I always come back to Gojira but like to mix it up and have gone from Mars to Sirius to Terra Incognita to The Link to Way of All Flesh back to L'enfant Sauvage. The last two are special and I love a number of tunes on them but definitely lean to earlier heavier - without dissing them in the least.
When fortitude came out I honestly hated it, but the more I listen to it the more I like it. I've always liked songs like born in winter and low lands, and I've come to realize fortitude is basically an entire album of songs like those
The only albums I revisit once in a while are From Mars to Sirius and The Link. I’m not a fan of them, but they’re definitely talented and respectable guys.
Back in 2019 when I had first started my channel, I did a review of From Mars to Sirius and I gave it a 4.5 out of 5. Actually, I think that review was the 3rd or 4th video I had ever put out. I love Gojira and have seen them twice!
Nice, seen 'em 3 times myself. Once in 2014 with Mastodon and Kvelertak, again in 2016 with TesseracT, and then in 2019 with Slipknot and Behemoth. They're so good live.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Me and my dad were at that 2019 show at the Bud Stage! They were awesome (but I still think somebody like Cannibal Corpse should've played before Slipknot instead of Volbeat).
@@wheelsofmercury Yeah Volbeat DEFINITELY stuck out like a sore thumb on that line-up. Watching tons of Volbeat fans be visibly repulsed and freaked out by Gojira and Behemoth was super fun though.
Hey, love the video, but I would like to say that from the looks of it you listened to the original master of The Link and I recommend you listen to the 2005 remaster. It's a lot less muffled and I'm really lucky to have listened to the remaster the first time I listened to it. Now, obviously I have my own biases but The Link is my favorite album out of everything Gojira's done. For me it keeps a lot of of the brutality and rawness of Terra but sound very different from everything else. For me there isn't a dull moment in this album and I love it so much that I'll be getting my first tattoo of this album, which will be specifically the tree from the The Link Alive album sometime after Christmas. If you browse reddit keep an eye out and you'll definitely see how it turned out.
From Mars to Sirius, magma and the way of all flesh is my top 3 ! You forgot to mention the huge Influence Korn had on Gojira. I’m kidding . But I’m not. But I am . But I’m not 😛 Love your take on Magma too , I fell in love with that record instantly, I felt the natural progression of the band here , and it’s really funny people claiming they “sold out” here. I send “stranded” to a normie girlfriend I had and she freaked out …. I don’t get the gatekeeping metal heads do , so no melody is allowed whatsoever ?
I tend to like brutal or gory death metal and one would expect that I liked more the early Gojira but I prefer their selling out phase, Magma and Fortitude being my favorites! ;-)
L’Enfant may be my new favourite, along with Sirius. Flesh needs a bit of trimming in my view. The album tends to lose its grip on me around two thirds of the way through.
I think your right around how I'd rank them. The only changes I'd make for my list is switch your rankings for L'enfant Sauvage and Magma and I'd rank Fortitude a 3
It's so funny how every gojira fan has different favorite albums, some fans love FMTS, some fans love Magma, some fans love The Link, some fans love L'enfant
So how you feel about L'enfant Sauvage is how i reacted and feel about Magma. There are great songs on there, but the midway looses me. Besides that, Gojira's discography has a consistency similar to that of Converge. They are all good! Just pick the one your listening to today. Hails Also Happy release day to Misþryming's "Með hamri" streaming on Bardo Methodology
1. From Mars to Sirius 2. The Way of all Flesh 3. L'Enfant Sauvage (completely disagree with you on this) ------------gap------------ 4. Fortitude 5. Magma 6. Terra Incognita 7. The Link
Interesting. Gojira is a band I'm kind of torn about. I think I like them for the most part. Interesting that you emntion Korn at one point though -- think someiems I hear the same thing and it puts me off a little, personally. But sometimes they ahve thsi weird hypnotic groove, anda n interesting production.
Gojira, easily my favorite metal band of the last 15 years bar none. Here's my ranking: 1. From Mars to Sirius 2. The Way of All Flesh 3. Magma 4. L'Enfant Sauvage 5. Terra Incognita 6. The Link 7. Fortitude
The Link may actually be my favorite, and it definitely has one of the most deliciously weird breakdowns I have ever heard. Yeah, I guess I'm on the Magma hater end of the spectrum. To me, that album sounds very generic and dull, with very weak vocals. Having heard you explain it's background does help contextualize it, but I think the attempt to come as sad introspective comes off more as dreary and listless. To me, Fortitude was a huge step up, as that is where they fully committed to the streamlined sound, whereas Magma always felt like an awkward bridge between two sounds.
Ive only heard one song by them. It was on the radio and im not sure how I feel about it. Always wanted to give one of their albums a try but just havent yet. Which one should I try first?
Very good review, you make very good points and i actually share a lot of what you’re saying. I’ve been late to the party, discovered them in 2017 and i’m still in awe of how talented these guys are, especially the live stuff is where they completely blew me away. I think it was Silvera that i heard first, and instantly as a non-metalhead, i felt they did it differently, i could totally feel it. I then with the years kept on going back in their catalogue and it’s the early heavier stuff that did it for me. Terra incognita to me as a debut album, is absolutely incredible. Heavy riffs, great production. 9/10 The Link, and this is where i totally agree with you, the flow is great, but the production or mastering hasn’t been done with care it seems. Bass kick doesn’t hit, sounds really weird, too tribal-y maybe and just overall flat. But these songs live man, probably one of, if not their best. If this had TWOAF production, it’s a 8,5/10, now i’d give it a 7,5/10 From Mars to Sirius, weirdly enough, apart from 3-4 tracks like the heaviest matter, In The Wilderness and From Mars + To sirius, there are too many tracks that don’t do it for me, and actually, even though still a beautiful album, might be my least favourite… 7/10 The Way of All Flesh, what started out with the one i liked the least, even though that was my opinion after only hearing 10 songs or so, has now probably become my favourite album. These songs need time and many listens before you’ll keep playing them. Those are most of the time, also the ones that will keep on being good for a longer time than the ones where you you get the instant pleasure. Great album, 1-2 songs like All the tears and Esoteric surgery that i would skip, the rest is gold. 9,5/10 L’enfant sauvage, again, i totally agree with what you’re saying, first 3 tracks, maybe 4 totally kickass, especially live, but after that, it’s indeed less creative. Production is on par with TWOAF, incredibly well done. 7,5/10 Magma, i dig it, it’s different. Do i love it, not really. Still great tracks on this one and gave them a little more recognition or more radio plays, and fair play to them. 7,5/10. Fortitude, this is where i still after almost 2 years don’t know how to feel about. First half is great, middle meh and last 2 are great as well. Born for one thing, new found (the ending on this one is some of their best stuff actually) and the trails are the standout tracks on this one. Vocals good have been louder in this one though. 7/10 I cross my fingers that the next one will be more of their older stuff. I heard in an interview it could actually really go in that direction, which is super exciting. I can’t wait for more, probably 2024-2025. Let’s give them time 😎
I love Gojira sooo much! Terra Ingcognita (2001) 4/5 Great start, badass metal core album The Link (2003) 3.5/5 Similar to Terra Incognita, but doesn’t hit as hard for whatever reason for me From Mars to Sirius (2005) 5/5 A complete masterpiece, one of the best albums of all time! So many great riffs and heavy songs The Way of All Flesh (2008) 4.5/5 Almost on par with FMTS L’Enfaunt Sauvage (2012) 4/5 Great album, that’s all Magma (2016) 4.5/5 Certainly not as heavy as their early work, but lots of great riffs and prog sections Fortitude (2021) 4.5/5 This was my first new Gojira album, and for a while it was my favorite!
7. Fortitude Bland and commercial sounding. Was an immense disappointment for me upon release. I hope they don’t continue this direction. Also WTF is this Alt Metal on “The Chant” and “Hold On”? Complete cheesiness. - Fav: Grind 6. The Link A weird mix between Technical Death Metal and some more mainstream elements. The songs are fine on their own, yet overall this album is too samey. Plus way too many interludes. - Fav: Remembrance 5. Magma Also in the same commercial vein as Fortitude but with more atmosphere to it and vastly superior production. Again the two instrumentals are a waste of time. The band called this their “Black Album”. I hope they don’t continue the direction of Metallica. - Fav: Magma 4. The Way of all Flesh Probably their heaviest record along with the debut. The middle drags a little. Still the last five tracks are among their best material. - Fav: The Art of Dying 3. Terra Incognita An underrated debut. It is closest to actual Death Metal than everything else they did. I also adore the guitar tone and how relentless it is. Morbid Angel meets Pantera meets Meshuggah meets experimentation. Again most interludes are useless here except the bass solo. - Fav: In the Forest 2. From Mars to Sirius Rightful classic which has its drawbacks. Normally I like raw production but I feel like this doesn’t fit the album here. The first album by them I ever listened and my gateway to extreme metal. It shrank a little in recent years. - Fav: (From Mars) To Sirius 1. L’Enfant Sauvage Perfect mix of Gojira heaviness and groove with the more mainstream elements of latter day Gojira (without the cheese). I feel like this has also the best atmosphere in their catalogue. - Fav: Mouth of Kala
I have to disagree with you opinion on the Link. Yes not as good as FMTS, but very very good . Morbid Angel worship to spare. My second favorite Gojira album. Third being TWOAF. 1. From Mars To Sirius(Perfect) 2. The Link (Almost Perfect) 3. The Way Of All Flesh (Excellent but a bit of a mixed bag) 4. Terra Incognito (Brutal, heavy, but there’s something missing) 5. I am immense, I am awake, renewed
WOO-HOO!
I've wanted you to do this for quite some time!
Grind, Sphinx, New Found, and Amazonia
very he’s to say, but personally
1. from mars to sirius
2. the link alive
3. Le’nfant sauvage
4. terra incognita
5. the link
6. the way of all flesh
7. magma
8. fortitude
(their whole catalog is outstanding)
S - From Mars To Sirius, The Way of All Flesh
A - Magma, Fortitude
B - Terra Incognite, The Link, L’enfant Sauvage
C -
D -
You mentioned “Amazonia” being Gojira doing metal for the radio.
I d give anything to have Slipknot or Gojira on the radio here!”
Seriously the Rock stations of our country just play the same Gun n roses, Rory Gallagher, oasis , rem, nirvana , Rhcpeppers - you get the idea - and it’s the same fkn songs too , absolutely no deep cuts !
Well said! I always wonder what radio station people are listening to :)
The slowest and lightest Gojira song would be the heaviest thing on the radio where I live.
My personal rankings would go:
7. The Link
6. Terra Incognita
5. Magma
4. L’enfant Sauvage
3. Fortitude
2. The Way Of All Flesh
1. From Mars To Sirius
I've always liked songs like born in winter and low lands, and I've come to realize fortitude is basically an entire album of songs like those
My all time favorite gojira song has to be the gift of guilt off l'efant sauvage. But toxic garbage island is a close second
Solid as always! Do one of these on Gorguts!
Now THAT is a good idea 👀
I will never understand the L'Efant Sauvage being the weakest, but i respect the opinion
That middle section in The Heaviest Matter in the Universe has caused more gains in the gym for me than any steroid could dream of doing.
Fucking mood.
Gojira in general is my gym jam. The power of it.
The only albums I revisit once in a while are From Mars to Sirius and The Link. I’m not a fan of them, but they’re definitely talented and respectable guys.
Embrace the World remains my personal favorite song from them. It hasn't been topped.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial ahahaha yeah that must've been funny to watch.
But I am . But I’m not 😛
Love your take on Magma too , I fell in love with that record instantly, I felt the natural progression of the band here , and it’s really funny people claiming they “sold out” here. I send “stranded” to a normie girlfriend I had and she freaked out ….
I don’t get the gatekeeping metal heads do , so no melody is allowed whatsoever ?
1. Whale
2. Skeleton
3. Sausage
4. Illuminati ⚠️
5. Fetal position
6. Soldier
7. Tree 🫡
I tend to like brutal or gory death metal and one would expect that I liked more the early Gojira but I prefer their selling out phase, Magma and Fortitude being my favorites! ;-)
I couldn’t imagine listening to a single Gojira album, let alone all of them.
L’Enfant may be my new favourite, along with Sirius. Flesh needs a bit of trimming in my view. The album tends to lose its grip on me around two thirds of the way through.
I think your right around how I'd rank them. The only changes I'd make for my list is switch your rankings for L'enfant Sauvage and Magma and I'd rank Fortitude a 3
Lmao I was listening to their discography yesterday
awesome ranking great band my favorite gojira album is the first one terra incognita
L’enfant Sauvage has been an album i’ve wanted to get into… too bad spotify doesn’t have it in my region..
FUUUUUUUUUCK!
get RUclips Music
More magma love! Less Fortitude love!
i would love to see a album review of the ocean discography please
I am the only person that prefers L'Enfant Sauvage to From Mars to Sirius.
I listen to both equally (along with TWOAF), and they’re all ridiculously amazing.
Terra has become burned into my brain over the past year as well.
It's so funny how every gojira fan has different favorite albums, some fans love FMTS, some fans love Magma, some fans love The Link, some fans love L'enfant
Killer rating.
So how you feel about L'enfant Sauvage is how i reacted and feel about Magma. There are great songs on there, but the midway looses me.
Besides that, Gojira's discography has a consistency similar to that of Converge.
They are all good! Just pick the one your listening to today.

6. Terra Incognita
7. The Link
Terra Incognita 4/5
The Link 3,5/5
From Mars To Sirius 5/5
The Way Of All Flesh 4/10
L 'Efant Sauvage 5/5
Magma 4,5/5
Fortitude 5/5
What’s wrong with TWOAF?
Evergrey next maybe? :D
Magma seems like the Black album much more to me.
i would love to see a ranking of immortal are you a fan of immortal robert
Nope
@@themetalmeltdownofficial why amazing band what about Marduk
Fuck yeah
Interesting. Gojira is a band I'm kind of torn about. I think I like them for the most part. Interesting that you emntion Korn at one point though -- think someiems I hear the same thing and it puts me off a little, personally. But sometimes they ahve thsi weird hypnotic groove, anda n interesting production.
❤❤❤❤❤
Gojira, easily my favorite metal band of the last 15 years bar none. Here's my ranking:
1. From Mars to Sirius
2. The Way of All Flesh
3. Magma
4. L'Enfant Sauvage
5. Terra Incognita
6. The Link
Definitely "From Mars To Sirius", its their best album.
Magma is an easy entry point and then go to Mars and Way
Hell yeah
Very good review, you make very good points and i actually share a lot of what you’re saying.
I’ve been late to the party, discovered them in 2017 and i’m still in awe of how talented these guys are, especially the live stuff is where they completely blew me away.
I think it was Silvera that i heard first, and instantly as a non-metalhead, i felt they did it differently, i could totally feel it. I then with the years kept on going back in their catalogue and it’s the early heavier stuff that did it for me.
Terra incognita to me as a debut album, is absolutely incredible. Heavy riffs, great production. 9/10
The Link, and this is where i totally agree with you, the flow is great, but the production or mastering hasn’t been done with care it seems. Bass kick doesn’t hit, sounds really weird, too tribal-y maybe and just overall flat. But these songs live man, probably one of, if not their best. If this had TWOAF production, it’s a 8,5/10, now i’d give it a 7,5/10
From Mars to Sirius, weirdly enough, apart from 3-4 tracks like the heaviest matter, In The Wilderness and From Mars + To sirius, there are too many tracks that don’t do it for me, and actually, even though still a beautiful album, might be my least favourite… 7/10
The Way of All Flesh, what started out with the one i liked the least, even though that was my opinion after only hearing 10 songs or so, has now probably become my favourite album. These songs need time and many listens before you’ll keep playing them. Those are most of the time, also the ones that will keep on being good for a longer time than the ones where you you get the instant pleasure. Great album, 1-2 songs like All the tears and Esoteric surgery that i would skip, the rest is gold. 9,5/10
L’enfant sauvage, again, i totally agree with what you’re saying, first 3 tracks, maybe 4 totally kickass, especially live, but after that, it’s indeed less creative. Production is on par with TWOAF, incredibly well done. 7,5/10
Magma, i dig it, it’s different.
I cross my fingers that the next one will be more of their older stuff. I heard in an interview it could actually really go in that direction, which is super exciting. I can’t wait for more, probably 2024-2025. Let’s give them time 😎
You should go over avenged sevenfolds discography
Good is good see Opeth Mastodon Metallica
Remembrance. A metal breakdown that elitists can respect
Thank you sir. May we have another?
Sirius
Flesh
Sauvage
Incognita
Fortitude
Magma
Link
Nothing below a B. Top ten metal band for me.
I love Gojira sooo much!
Terra Ingcognita (2001) 4/5
Great start, badass metal core album
The Link (2003) 3.5/5
Similar to Terra Incognita, but doesn’t hit as hard for whatever reason for me
From Mars to Sirius (2005) 5/5
A complete masterpiece, one of the best albums of all time! So many great riffs and heavy songs
The Way of All Flesh (2008) 4.5/5
Almost on par with FMTS
L’Enfaunt Sauvage (2012) 4/5
Great album, that’s all
Magma (2016) 4.5/5
Certainly not as heavy as their early work, but lots of great riffs and prog sections
Fortitude (2021) 4.5/5
This was my first new Gojira album, and for a while it was my favorite!
To me personally, the band has done absolutely nothing for me since The Way of All Flesh 🤷♂️
7. Fortitude
Bland and commercial sounding. Was an immense disappointment for me upon release. I hope they don’t continue this direction. Also WTF is this Alt Metal on “The Chant” and “Hold On”? Complete cheesiness.
- Fav: Grind
6. The Link
A weird mix between Technical Death Metal and some more mainstream elements. The songs are fine on their own, yet overall this album is too samey. Plus way too many interludes.
- Fav: Remembrance
5. Magma
Also in the same commercial vein as Fortitude but with more atmosphere to it and vastly superior production. Again the two instrumentals are a waste of time. The band called this their “Black Album”. I hope they don’t continue the direction of Metallica.
- Fav: Magma
4. The Way of all Flesh
Probably their heaviest record along with the debut. The middle drags a little. Still the last five tracks are among their best material.
- Fav: The Art of Dying
3. Terra Incognita
An underrated debut. It is closest to actual Death Metal than everything else they did. I also adore the guitar tone and how relentless it is. Morbid Angel meets Pantera meets Meshuggah meets experimentation. Again most interludes are useless here except the bass solo.
- Fav: In the Forest
2. From Mars to Sirius
Rightful classic which has its drawbacks. Normally I like raw production but I feel like this doesn’t fit the album here. The first album by them I ever listened and my gateway to extreme metal. It shrank a little in recent years.
- Fav: (From Mars) To Sirius
1. L’Enfant Sauvage
Perfect mix of Gojira heaviness and groove with the more mainstream elements of latter day Gojira (without the cheese).
1. From Mars To Sirius(Perfect)
2. The Link (Almost Perfect)
3. The Way Of All Flesh (Excellent but a bit of a mixed bag)
4. Terra Incognito (Brutal, heavy, but there’s something missing)
5. Magma (meh)
6. L’Enfant Sauvage (eh)
7. Fortitude(Disappointing)
Exactly, The Link with TWOAF production would be in my top 3.
The only album by them that I never understood the hype was The Link. The rest of their discography is almost perfect for me.
My personal ranking is:
1. From Mars To Sirius (people who doesn't have this album at first aren't people to trust) 5/5
2. Fortitude 4.5/5
3. The Way Of All Flesh 4.5/5
4. Magma 4.5/5
5. L'Enfant Sauvage 4/5
6. Terra Incognita 4/5
7. The Link 3/5
Hell yeah here it is 🤘💯
