If Iwata did contribute to make Bank for preservation purposes then I understand it (although ironically shutting down servers is making it obsolete). The shutting down of internet on the one side feels like “fans now have to pick up the slack that Nintendo left behind”, whilst the other side of the argument being “Nintendo is just managing their server budget so that little is wasted”
But my main concern is Pokemon
Instead of providing an in-game post-game transfer system for free, they decided to have it part of a paid service that is dependent on an existing internet connection, and it doesn’t look like they are even considering of any type of compromised method to get Pokemon from gen 5-7 onto Pokemon Home

    • @jpaytonk

It’ll be the first time since the transition to the Gameboy Advance that we won’t be able to bring past generations to current games. The ability to bring the old forward has long been a big draw to many collectors and competitive players so this is not a small thing in the case of Pokemon. Especially considering Gamefreak has always intentionally put rare or exclusive Pokemon in specific games to encourage trading. Like you mentioned - by offering no new alternative they are effectively disconnecting players from 20 years worth of their games, something they’ve always worked to circumvent. The in-game transfer system should be an unlockable in every Pokemon game.

I kind of want to start a DS club thing at a local librarby, and I think it would be really cool to set up a Raspberry Pi to provide silly little experiences for DS/3DS users. One of these would be a StreetPass Mii exclusive to the club. The Mii would have something different about it each time, such as shirt color or hat, and would also have a single random puzzle piece for every individual StreetPass tag. This way, on the *next* session of the club, everyone has a different puzzle piece and they tag each other and get a bunch of them. I also think it would be really cool to do Pokémon giveaways/battles against a custom AI and stuff like that. The shutdown of the online services might be a good thing for this specifically, because it means I don’t have to worry about enabling people to cheat in online games with my custom experiences.

I think for me, the main issue I take with this plan is the fact it’s so soon after the eShop shutdown.
As you said it makes sense, but it also makes it seem extra harsh that they’ve only given it a year after that happened.
I mean imagine if you bought a game back in March, just before the shop closed, and it either utilises or is dependent on online functionality.
At best, somebody who did that now only has that year to actively use the game, as well as any other games that are in a similar boat.
They also reassured everybody that even though the eShop was being retired, online functionality would not be going away anytime soon and would remain “for the foreseeable future”.
And to me, personally, it doesn’t seem reasonable to consider exactly a year as the definition of “the foreseeable future”, although that’s really just my own opinion :T

Meaning that you won't be able to transfer any Pokemon from Gen 3-7 and virtual consoles games to the newer games. The Pokemon games commitment to bringing any Pokemon you caught to any generation is super impressive. I mean what other video game let's you use a character you trained twenty years ago, and still use it currently.
I don't know if this is technically possible but I would love if Gamefreak made a peripheral that let's you put a Gameboy/GBA/DS/3DS cartridge and then let's you transfer your Pokemon to Pokemon Home. Basically having a local way to transfer your Pokemon.

Fact is, the vast majority of games these days have an online gameplay component. And like Arlo pointed out, some of these games are almost entirely online-focused (like the Splatoon games). If you remove access to that component, you're removing access to something that your customers paid for when they bought those games. To say that that's not cool is putting it mildly. It should be illegal in my opinion. In an ideal world, we would have laws stating that companies must issue a full refund if they remove access to any portion of a game's gameplay functionality after it has been purchased.
But that's ridiculous! Why would any company ever create an online component for a game if they know they're going to be required to support it in perpetuity? Well, that would be their problem. They SHOULD have the integrity to support online functionality in perpetuity, so it's sad that that support would have to be forced. And if this were to result in fewer online-focused games hitting the market, so much the better. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over some predatory live service projects being cancelled.

From my understanding the Blue Pieces can be bought at random with coins or streetpassed. While pink ones you can only get through a streetpass. The random spotpass was for one of the pink pieces per puzzle. You should still be able to get them off someone that already has them.

While I wasn't a wii u fan, the 3DS will always live on for my as one of my favorite things Nintendo ever did. The game library really should be saved for a potential switch 2 with how many gems it had. 3DS had a rough start but then once we got Mario Kart, Pokemon, and Smash, it was amazing until the switch came. It will be missed for me.

As someone who played streetpass plaza basically everyday since I got my 3ds, I did complete all puzzles (not region locked ones at least) a while back.

For me personally, every new development with 3ds shutdown feels bad. I know it hasn’t been in the limelight for a good many years, but the dual screen Nintendo systems were truly something unique to every other game console. Switch is great and all, but there’s something kind of special about these old handhelds. Many of my all-time favorite games were made for these systems. Call it nostalgia, but I really feel sad seeing the end.

Well with the servers being shut down, that means the netcode won't be updated anymore . . . so on the upside they'd be easier to rebuild for local matches and tournaments, but on the downside any server reliant game will effectively be lost unless someone datamined the source code before the shutdown.

I think I know exactly what Nintendo is doing here. They're trying to shut all this stuff down because they really wanna do a bunch of 3DS rereleases and remasters on Switch. They've already shown their hand by remastering a funky game like Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. They want it to be as expensive and inconvenient as possible to access their old content so they can resell it to you.

No, they simply don't think, it's worth it to support the 3DS and WiiU anymore
This would've happened regardless of any Remasters

I get your thought process, but personally, I haven’t played my 3DS in years because I simply hate how it feels in my hands, so I would buy a lot of remakes if they ever came (shinier graphics, ideally smoother gameplay and framerate etc.). I bet there’s quite a few people who feel the same.

Bit sad to me, the 3ds was the first console i was able to get online with.
Kinda saw it coming though, when i booted up a new 2ds i bought it did just make me feel sad with how all the old features have faded away and the fact it just reminds me of my lonely youth when it all used to excite me

I kind of anticipated this. It is certainly another reason to mod you 3DS and Wii U consoles for that pretendo network. As long as I can still play things like Splatoon and Smash Bros online, I'm happy. Hopefully there's some way to keep those Mario Maker levels up, although I kind of doubt it unless some insider at Nintendo were to share where those levels are stored or something

Only thing I fear is once they do shut the servers down, they might try and release another update for both systems to try and crack down on modding more, just like shortly after eshop was killed

If Nintendo messes with pretendo (which I’m unfortunately almost SURE they will), it will just be so dumb. They’re only hurting their most supportive fans. I’m talking like they’ve already sent a cease and desist, because it’s almost a guarantee.
P2P servers and fan networks for dead servers is such a cool thing because you know the niche rounds of games that you’ll play will be filled with a lot of sentimental gaming. I haven’t been in one of these but I’ve played in dying servers before and it’s cathartic to run into the same usernames over and over again. You don’t even need to message but you’re essentially spending time with a friend over a shared hobby, or should I say lobby lmao.

Spotpass is used in FE Awakening and Fates for so much. Not just online play, but also summoning teams, and getting bonus items. Shutting the online down takes off a huge chunk of those games' functionality. It's awful
