I think many perfumes throughout history were meant to be used in combination with the concentrations. You would splash the cologne on without abandon, all over. The eau de toilette or parfum would go on places like arms, behind knees, chest, maybe neck. The pure parfum would be applied with the stopper or just your finger to your pulse points, behind the ears, collar bone, and probably private areas
I loved that you talked about appreciating a synthetic fragrance. Since I smelled Gucci rush.... Omg that's a whole experience and made me understand a synthetic fragrance and what it can be. Dacob I simply live for the way you experience fragrance! I started more and more to use perfumes at home for myself because of you and wow, what a wise choice... I'm feeling closer to the fragrances I love and discovering sides of them I didn't pay attention before. God I live this channel!!!

What I would advise beginners is to buy a back up of a current perfume you really love, for the future. Preferable if it is still the OG version. If it gets reformulated or discontinued in the future, you can still sniff it and reminisce and by then it will be vintage without spending the extra money trying to hunt down a bottle online 😅

I remember back then when Poison was launched, I was in high school and I constantly came across the poison ads on fashion magazines where you can peel back the edge of the page to reveal the scent. Such a vivid memory.

What a wonderful video, Dacob. This is so educational. I totally understand, but now many EDTs are not even the same fragrance as the EDPs in designer and expensive fragrances. This amazes me. Also,...L'Oreal bought Muegler and let's see what happens here. Estee Lauder bought Le Labo.....I fear that is done too. My Godmother wore Fleurs de Rocaille. I bought it recently. Not even close.

I miss being able to try samples before purchasing. Also I am disappointed at the consultants lack of knowledge at places like Sephora and Ulta.
The lack of knowledge from sales associates is kind of rampant these days on most levels and in many sectors.

Okay, you are definitely the perfume friend I need right now. My collection is a bit unruly. I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by my gusto for perfumes, a bit over-influenced to keep adding too much too quickly & fighting the feeling of being a bit ashamed by it all. BUT, at the same time I’m actually also very satisfied with my new fascination & want to dissect my collection into a more meaningful experience. Samples are a huge help in my opinion too buuuut they can also be tricky mind manipulators as they can trigger fomo in some cases. 😫😫😫💖

You can’t go wrong with Chanel No 5! My favorites are EDT and Leau. Make sure to give them time to develop on skin because once the aldehydes fade they are gorgeous and timeless.

I agree with everything you've said here! collecting perfume can be a verrrrrry expensive hobby! but tbh I don't mind splurging on something I really really like. collecting perfume, tbh, kinda gave me trauma. you know when you have that one holy grail and then boom, suddenly it gets discontinued. and you don't even have spare bottles for back up. that's so sad! I have a bad habbit of hoarding holy grails now. who knows next time they will change the formula or worse discontinued....
They always get us with the discontinuation/reformulation fomo don’t they! Its definitely an issue for me too.
Great informative video and all points are on point! Wish I had had these pieces of advice when I started my perfume journey. Although I kinda stole from my mum her attitude towards getting back-up bottles to all of her favourite perfumes. This is why she still has discontinued jewels she keeps sealed in their boxes.
I love getting backups of perfumes I love too. Its awesome because they reformulate perfumes a lot and having the first batches later on makes me feel safe. Haha. 💖

I am STUNNED by your knowledge. I was sort of trying to find a place to get information on fragrance. I found 'Jeremy Fragrance' he's O.K. but you are so knowledgeable and explain thoroughly I learned something about fragrance. Being a fragrance fanatic I thought I knew ALOT! I worked at Neiman Marcus here in Vegas and Stalked the fragrances. I miss the days of beauty/fragrance classes and I even got to travel to Trish McEvoy's home for training in her line! Way back in 2004
Jeremy doesn’t stack up to Dacob. He doesn’t get too deep into it like Dacob does.
Wow, thank you for breaking this all down. You have answered so many questions that I have had. I have been trying to figure this all out. I’m a huge perfume lover and have been since I started wearing Love’s Baby Soft in 7th grade, on to Anais Anais, Halston, Obsession, Youth Dew, I hit all of the Esteé Lauder, and then I moved onto Chanel. I have been a person who likes what she likes but also have a huge love for patchouli. I am not a fan of vanilla and musk.
Covid lockdown got me more and more interested in discovering Niche brands like Histories, Imaginary Authors, Etat Libré de Orange, and Peniholigans. There are some incredible ones that have captivated me and my senses to whole other level. I have purchased their discovery sets and then bought bottles from them.
I did just purchase a small sample from Scent Decant of Oud For Greatness because I have heard so many wonderful things about it, but it is heavy and quite masculine smelling. I learned that I am with you and am not a fan of the Oud.

Cologne 4711 is wonderful. My kids have used it since they were in their teens and love it.

So smart to break it down this way instead of just rattling off the same few "beginner" fragrances as most people. I really like this concept of categories not only to get to know different types of perfumes and discover what you like, but also to understand how the perfume business works.
P.S. I'm one of those few that actually wears CDG "tape" regularly especially in spring. I actually just bought a backup because I found one half off (hint: ssense private sale).

Loved your content. I’ve always had a very acute sense of smell and have followed my own scent journey. I wished I had gone into the business . Thank you, this was informative esp clarifying the EDP, EDT EDC etc . This made a lot of sense. Over the past year I’ve dabbled in niche and found a very different path yet. still true to my nose. My heart is Coco Noir , I love Le Labo Labdanum, Musc Ravageur, Roja Elixir , and Xerjoff Richwood . Coming from decades of Shalimar , Madame Rochas, Laura Mercier Ambre and my Coco Noir ..I feel I may have a pattern 😍😂. Still learning the notes but again, this has been great Dacob … 🧡 Stani 🧡

As you spoke about Chanel No. 5, I remembered I had a couple from years ago (my husband loved the fragrance on me). So, last night I looked around and I have a spray bottle of Chanel No. 5, Eau Premiere, Eau de Parfum and the small black and gold purse spray that is Eau de Parfum. I don't even know how old these are, but I'm breaking them out again. I don't have a desire for a Chanel bag, but I do love the Parfum. I didn't hear you mention the Eau de Premiere, so I thought you could tell me where that fit in. I do seem to prefer musky scents and there was a Gucci one I liked (mostly the bottle), but I should have kept the bottle because they don't have it anymore (I am a sucker for packaging). When you mentioned Bois des Iles as Sandalwood, I thought that might be one for me. I'm learning so much.

Thank you Daiva 🙏🏻🥰 a great delicate lilly of the valley scent is Chanel’ Paris Biarritz and Dolce & Gabbana’s first red cap perfume from 1991. Chanel Sycomore is an amazing vetiver. Chanel Egoiste is an amazing sandalwood, together with Bois des Iles. Also Guerlain’s Samsara is a wonderful sandalwood but you need to hunt down a vintage bottle of that one as the current formulations are not that good in my opinion. Also Lorenzo Villoresi’s “Sandalo” is an amazing sandalwood.

Do you think it's worth getting vintage bottles in the second hand market in order to compare them with newer formulas and batch numbers?
Can imagine, it may be hard to track down certain fragrances, you mayb eventually find the bottle, but the inside, who knows.

When I was dehoarding my condo a few years back, I think I threw out ALL of my Burberry and Moschino perfumes 😢😢😢. I had 6-8 of each brand.

Thank you for such an informative video in regards to start our own collection. How would you identify what notes you like or hate when a perfume has so many notes? For example, I tested Chanel's Jersey exclusif as I liked the smell on the tester paper over Cuir Russie for a leather based perfume, but there was something there I don't like in the dry down on my skin. How do we know the individual notes? Find ones with less notes/simple perfume so we can recognize them?
There are a few data bases online for perfumes where notes are listed for many perfumes. Some perfume houses also list notes on their own websites for each of their fragrance products. As for our noses discerning the individual notes and ingredients in each perfume… that takes a lot of time and a lot of trial and error. The more we get used to the perfumes we wear and the more we start to recognize each note within the perfume. It also helps to try and detect similar notes within different perfumes where those same notes are listed in. Also can help to go to a good perfumery (mostly niche) and ask if they have available for a sniff the pure raw individual materials like pure tuberose, orris root, musks, labdanum and so on. This also helps our noses isolate each smell and remember it for the future. Its very fascinating but like any art, this one too takes its good time before we can come anywhere near mastering it.

I sometimes wish I could smell the old Obsession once more. I believe some of us are born with a passion for fragrances, of any kind. The way a city or a hotel smells when you travel, for instance, an old monument, an old book... it has always been hypnotizing for me ever since I was a child. My parents used to say it was easy buying me a present. They knew it was a perfume.

Some perfume ingredients are like a fine wine and only get better with age, such as many resins and woods. How do you know if a fragrance is better because it has aged, rather than it being better because the original formula was just better?
My sense of smell has changed… have just discovered I can’t stand burning smoked type or smoky kind of scents. When I bought Dior Oud Isaphan I loved it.. now I can’t stand it or fireplace smoking scents. Makes me feel sick. Going to have to give away my oud Isaphan and a few similar other scents
