The Doug Anthony All Stars were an Australian musical comedy, alternative rock and vocal group who initially performed together between 1984 and 1994. The group were an acoustic trio, originally comprising Paul McDermott and Tim Ferguson on main vocals and Richard Fidler on guitar and backing vocals. Peace out.

Omg!! This is a throw back! These guys are crazy! I grew up watching DAAS! Their comedy was completely outrageous that you often forgot that under that outrageousness was real musical talent. I miss the Big Gig!
Ah, Paul McDermott. The voice of an Angel, with the most acerbic wit you will ever hear and a genius mind to go along with it. #sigh These guys were filthy (in every sense of the word), anarchic, hilarious, chaotic and just so, so talented. I miss DAAS.
This is the exact reaction you should have "I don't know why this works but it does". Those who watched this when it aired just stopped in their tracks, gobsmacked. Wasn't this the one where they tried to insult everyone so they'd go away, the screen went back, and then they said, "yeah, I think they're all gone" and the camera came back up into this? Or was that another serious song? But I absolutely loved their version of this. Their voices blend so beautifully.
DAAS stands for Doug Anthony Allstars- a joke in itself which probably only Australians of a certain age would get. They were hilarious, irreverent and thoroughly outrageous, and then in the middle of their anarchic act would drop in a song like this, delivered with purity and soul ( and then perhaps segue into something like, and I kid you not, “I Fuck Dogs” - which itself is a must-see!). My favorite straight cover of there’s would be the Hunters and Collectors song Throw Your Arms Around Me - simply gorgeous rendition.
Absolutely loved Paul McDermott on the GNW New Years special in 97 doing Throw Your Arms Around Me, absolutely fantastic. Saw DAAS at the Brisbane Powerhouse a few years ago, not sure if it was a plant, but Paul spotted a guy in the 3rd row wearing a shirt that said I Fuck Dogs and they completely lost it :D :D :D
Don’t take them too seriously. They didn’t take themselves seriously at all. Just a great musical comedy group that would always throw in a proper song somewhere in their set.
Yup. What was the one about Jesus? I can't remember. But do remember it was outrageous and would offend Christians everywhere. Even so it's absolutely brilliant!

Oh wow, I used to love the Doug Anthony All Stars back in the day. They used to give me a good laugh. Gladys Knight and the Pips version was actually the original. Marvin Gaye’s version was the second to be recorded, but notably the most popular.

The brilliant Doug Anthony All stars ..All fantastic singers but Paul McDermott in middle iv seen live in concert twice in his later years and he has the most belt it to the choir, gospel sounding voice .They done alot of Crazy stuff ! Happy Birthday for tomorrow Nick .
Dude. So glad you got to cover this. Used to give me goosies way back in the 90’s. These guys have a brilliant approach to this. You are sorta missing out. There is an extended version of this and people in the crowd tear up. Keep up the vibe with the random mixes. Rock on. Supercruiser.
Holy shit! Was shocked and happy to see who you were reacting to in my list that I totally cut out on a show I was in the middle of watching lol. Effing awesome, you’re a legend whoever picked this one! Love DAAS. Had such a thing for Paul McDermott when I was younger. He still has such a killer voice. Be good to see what he thinks of those old favs like throw your arms around me and the old triangle.
As others have commented, Doug Anthony All Stars were a comedy musical group out here. The guy on the guitar is Richard Fidler. Richard hosts a daily conversation hour program on ABC radio out here and he's absolutely brilliant. The man could have a conversation about the mating habit of a Tibetan Tick and every moment of it would be enthralling!
Glad you got a clip of this of just the song, there are other versions with their comedy routine prior to breaking out this song in the act and if you saw the routine before the song, it would have made no sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love DAAS however this moment in their spot on the big gig always never made sense to me as they were being wild and crazy and then they stopped and started singing this There was also a rumour that the lady in the audience with the tear on her cheek was planted and the tear was not real. Don’t know how true that is but Paul mcdermott’s voice is beautifully haunting in this song
So context i everything:It's the 90s. They're a comedy trio -who happen to sing. It was a fashion back then for artists to do 'lounge' versions of pop songs. These guys did all kinds of satirical mashups - but this is a Kingston Trio style... They are showing you what the song is without soul. (Kind of showing you how white singers oftenobliterate the soul of the originals they cover) They put a different spin on their covers. They also had a lot of clever originals. They're in their 50s these days & don't perform together much any more just on special occasions. The lead - Paul McDermott really has a beautiful voice that can bring people to tears. Watch this one for another DAAS reunion performance from 2003 ruclips.net/video/q1fy9HY4gmE/видео.html
@@suave-rider Andrew Denton is a pioneer of that. Got all sorts of bands, including DAAS with Barry Crocker, to cover Stairway to Heaven when he was doing Money or the Gun, then had his 'breakfast show challenge' on MMM, which produced all sorts of weird & interesting covers. Incidentally, I just checked how old they are, and tomorrow is Paul's 60th birthday.
Ooooh! A DAAS reaction video, never thought I'd see one! I saw so many of their gigs, met them and still have a signed page of their... art? So talented.
love the Doug Anthony All-stars, DAAS. Aussie comic geniuses that only broke up when Tim, the tall one found out he had MS. They were most humour but did some great covers, Paul who is in the middle has an amazing voice. they reformed a few years ago without Richard who was the guitar player, Tim now in a wheelchair which that absolutely take the piss out of. I have been waiting for a PayPal day to request these guys, they do a sensation version of the Hunters and Collectors Throw your arms Around me, but it is their humour that one the fans over
I highly recommend them doing Throw Your Arms Around Me. It is my absolute favourite version of that song, gives me goosebumps everytime. Paul McDermott is an incredible singer.
OMG I never thought I'd see anyone reacting to DAAS. How wonderful. They used to throw beautiful songs into their act just to completely unbalance the viewers 😂 Paul has the most heart meltingly beautiful voice. Tim once described it as " the voice of an angel coming down off a bourbon bender" ... Seems apt. I could see their "Throw Your Arms Around Me" clip as the next clip and I wished you'd just played it straight after. DAAS are phenomenal, everyone should know about them 💜💜💜💜
DAAS = The Doug Anthony All Stars who were a comedy trio but musically talented. Creedance Clearwater Revival (CCR) did a cover of this as well - but in swamp rock style
Yeeew ,,, The DAAS were ahead of their time !! Awesome vocalists and satirists / comedians too !! And sad to say Tim , the tall fella is going thru a hard time with Multiple sclerosis , good luck legend !!!
It's fascinating that someone without any context of who the Dougs are still gets that exact same feeling of 'this shouldn't work, but it does'. Can't wait for you to discover more of their genius in the future.
These boys are Australian Comedy and Musical ROYALTY. I remember being in the audience at one of their shows when I was 13 and getting that absolute SHIT ripped out of me by Paul because I had the Jason Donovan Bouffant Mullet and it was the absolute highlight of my teens. Performances like this, from them especially, were such a shock to so many viewers because of how they'd made their name, NOBODY expected them to have the pipes they have and I love it. It's almost like learning about Tim Minchin through songs like Prejudice and The Pope Song, then learning he does stuff like Not Perfect and White Wine In The Sun.
I can't believe this has made it overseas!! I saw them 3 times live as a teenager (I'm from Melbourne). Paul McDermott is an incredible singer. He would never be in the music industry though. Good on you doing this! 👍✌️🇦🇺
Love DAAS, loved the Big Gig, a huge part of my teens 😁 I saw them live in Cairns back then, and still have DAAS Book on the shelf. Such loose cannons 😆
The Doug Anthony All Stars did a cover, with another Australian singer, of Stairway to Heaven for a show called "The Money or the Gun". In fact there were a number of acts to cover that song on that show, and an album produced called "Stairways to Heaven". One version, by a children's entertainer, actually made the top 10 in the UK charts.
The DAAS were really big in the 1980’s. They won numerous comedy awards including the Edinburg Fringe. In the 2018’s they reformed sort off and did gigs. The guitarist Tim was the butt of all their jokes and was picked on. He is now a broadcaster with ABC ( our national broadcasting corporation), Richard who was on the left, suffers from MS, and still performs. Paul (the middle) is the most underrated singer this county has ever produced.🐨
Absolutely LOVE the Doug Anthony All Stars! oh and I know exactly what you mean about liking it, its a particular skill these guys have. They really are unique, and very talented.
Australia. What can I say? Our comedy is absolutely unique and when you take Monkey Boy (Paul) with the voice of a choirboy and mix it with the amazing Tim and Richard … this is what you get. DAAS ROCK!!
Y E S !!!!!!!!!! YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!! 😃 THANK YOU!!!! I am so so so so soooo happy you found these guys and LIKE them (but then you love Tim Minchin so it stands to reason!) DAAS (Doug Anthony All Stars) is an in your face political satirical comedy group! and in the middle of their (not for children) content, they pull out masterpieces like this! Please check out these 5 songs at least > "The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan is Dead" "The War Song" "Throw Your Arms Around Me" "Auld Triangle sans triangle" (a newer much more comical version) and because it's the leading singer Paul McDermott's 60th is today ( May 13th) I hope you'll check out his latest solo original song "Slow Ride Home" CHOOKAS!!! 💖
PS I found out this dropped through Tim Ferguson (the tall dude singing high harmony that's now on wheels with MS) He's an acquaintance of mine (friendly rival of my brother) and HOPEFULLY he will contact you! 🥰 CHOOKAS! 💖
Oh man the Dougs. There's a sleeper of a related video sitting there - their The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan Is Dead medley is not well known but really showcases their talent, absolute beauty you wouldn't expect from a group with their style of comedy, but that's DAAS.
There is a 5 minute DAAS comedy routine that leads into this song, outrageous and funny. This video is nearly 30 years old. Their other songs are great too, look them up. Brendon Behan Is Dead, I Fuck Dogs, Throw Your Arms Around Me, World's Best Kisser, Stairway to Heaven with Barry Crocker.

If they were starting up in the US today, they might go with something like Mitch McConnell All Stars, similar genre of politician.
Surprise sha la la la , la la lala I hope you get the reference 🤣 there was a group of us left the melb comedy festival singing it as we walked down the street lol
Wait until you hear their little gem. “I f@&k dogs”. Truely inspiring. Lol
@@jeremymaitland-smith6553 lol someone got my reference 🤣🤣🤣
OMG! Can you imagine DAAS having a go at US politics?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
OMG! Such a throwback to the 90s (I remember still being in high school when DAAS called it quits) and I never expected to see you reacting to them 🤣
CCR Creedence Clearwater Revival also had a huge run with this .... DAAS - you rarely knew what you were going to get... talented and hilarious ... I guess if you didn't grow up with them they could be an 'aquired taste' haha...
Oh wow, I used to love the Doug Anthony All Stars back in the day. They used to give me a good laugh.
Gladys Knight and the Pips version was actually the original. Marvin Gaye’s version was the second to be recorded, but notably the most popular.
I will never forget watching this when it aired. I felt it. Even now when I hear Marvin Gaye’s version this version comes to mind and the feelings that were evoked that night return. Love DAAS
Paul McDermott's version of I Kissed a Girl on Good News Week is a must watch😂
Thank you for reminding me this existed!
Yay!! I love DAAS! Amazingly messed up comedy then they go into serious mode and these voices just come out and surprise you 😍
Oh you want another one of their songs to check out? Serious or funny? Throw Your Arms Around Me for serious and I F*ck Dogs for funny 😂
Do The Dead Elvis for another funny
@@kevkoala 'my babys going to jail" for some old school laughs
Ah man RUclips is now sending me down a rabbit hole with DAAS, Big Gig, DAAS Kapitalcand GNW 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I forgot about these shows hahahahahahahahaha
Oh wow! I’m amazed that DAAS came up! Paul’s voice is like an angel!
I fkn KNEW I'd see your name here!!!
@@philjaensch8731 Glad I didn’t disappoint you! 🤣
Thanks so much for your reaction! And a special thanks to the person who requested this!!
Glad you got a clip of this of just the song, there are other versions with their comedy routine prior to breaking out this song in the act and if you saw the routine before the song, it would have made no sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love DAAS however this moment in their spot on the big gig always never made sense to me as they were being wild and crazy and then they stopped and started singing this
There was also a rumour that the lady in the audience with the tear on her cheek was planted and the tear was not real. Don’t know how true that is but Paul mcdermott’s voice is beautifully haunting in this song
Actually right before this they had demanded the whole tv audience switch off their tv’s 🤣
If this freaked him out, imagine if he watched the Kansky Sisters!!!
Never thought I'd see the valiant crew of the Shitsu Tonka on this channel 🤣
Does anyone remember the line right before the start of the song? "What a pack of wankers!" 🤣🤣🤣
Pioneers of "Like a Version"
@@suave-rider Andrew Denton is a pioneer of that. Got all sorts of bands, including DAAS with Barry Crocker, to cover Stairway to Heaven when he was doing Money or the Gun, then had his 'breakfast show challenge' on MMM, which produced all sorts of weird & interesting covers.
Incidentally, I just checked how old they are, and tomorrow is Paul's 60th birthday.
Was not unusual to see them busking in the early years ,great talent
"I don't know why this works but it does" is everything about Doug Anthony All stars LOL
I remember when this aired. When it finished I stood up and applauded I. My living room. Totally blew me away the. As it still does now
Haha... good to see you've discovered the Doug Anthony Allstars :-)
Ohhh- welcome to DAAS!! Paul McDermotts version of Oops I did it again from Good News Week is amazing! 💗💗
OMG I never thought I'd see anyone reacting to DAAS. How wonderful. They used to throw beautiful songs into their act just to completely unbalance the viewers 😂
Paul has the most heart meltingly beautiful voice. Tim once described it as " the voice of an angel coming down off a bourbon bender" ... Seems apt. I could see their "Throw Your Arms Around Me" clip as the next clip and I wished you'd just played it straight after.
DAAS are phenomenal, everyone should know about them 💜💜💜💜
I was wondering when you were going to come across DAAS. One of my favourite comedic groups ever. Please do more.
DAAS = The Doug Anthony All Stars who were a comedy trio but musically talented. Creedance Clearwater Revival (CCR) did a cover of this as well - but in swamp rock style
Check out their "we fuck dogs" - a classic!
Paul McDermott has an amazing voice.
Now do “throw your arms around me”
Also look for them on "The Big Gig" and "Don't forget your toothbrush"
Yeeew ,,, The DAAS were ahead of their time !! Awesome vocalists and satirists / comedians too !! And sad to say Tim , the tall fella is going thru a hard time with Multiple sclerosis , good luck legend !!!
This was good but its hard to pick a favourite from " Funk You ' " I want to spill the blood of a hippie " and "Commies for Christ" ... I love D.A.A.S
Joan of arc....
Oh snap! DAAS! For their time one of the most outrageous comedy acts around. Great to see a react to them!
Our boys. 💕🥰 This is why I know the words to this song, because of this performance. Paul McDermott in particular is amazing.
Welcome to DAAS bro. You're welcome 🤣
Was going to suggest this, glad someone already did it.
It's fascinating that someone without any context of who the Dougs are still gets that exact same feeling of 'this shouldn't work, but it does'. Can't wait for you to discover more of their genius in the future.
Been following these guys since the Big Gig. Been to so many of their gigs. Paul has the most amazing voice.
I missed Christmas with my family to stay just to watch this show
These boys are Australian Comedy and Musical ROYALTY.
YAaaaaaaaasssss!!!! These guys were and still are amazing.
You got it arse about. Richard is the guitarist and Tim has Multiple Schlerosis. Tim and Paul still perform together.
@@kerrimarchingo3420 With a little help from the great Flacco I believe....
@@adwood201 after Richard left yes
Absolutely LOVE the Doug Anthony All Stars! oh and I know exactly what you mean about liking it, its a particular skill these guys have. They really are unique, and very talented.
I’ve always thought their ballads have a choirboy feel. Paul’s voice especially
Oh wow I saw them back in the early 90s while I was at university 😀 they are sooo good
The Doug’s are legendary! My childhood icons!!!!
I am so so so so soooo happy you found these guys and LIKE them (but then you love Tim Minchin so it stands to reason!)
DAAS (Doug Anthony All Stars) is an in your face political satirical comedy group! and in the middle of their (not for children) content, they pull out masterpieces like this!
Please check out these 5 songs at least >
"The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan is Dead"
"The War Song"
"Throw Your Arms Around Me"
"Auld Triangle sans triangle" (a newer much more comical version)
and because it's the leading singer Paul McDermott's 60th is today ( May 13th) I hope you'll check out his latest solo original song
"Slow Ride Home"
CHOOKAS!!! 💖
PS I found out this dropped through Tim Ferguson (the tall dude singing high harmony that's now on wheels with MS) He's an acquaintance of mine (friendly rival of my brother) and HOPEFULLY he will contact you! 🥰 CHOOKAS! 💖
PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🥳🎂🎈💖 CHOOKAS! 💖
Bloody hell! I made that programme, back in 1991! Still grouse.
Yes Doug Anthony All Stars were very different I used to watch them every week on the Big Gig back in the 80's, think it was thursday nights on the ABC here in Australia, they were comedians first and foremost but the little bloke Paul McDermott in the middle is a very accomplished singer. Cant believe this was neatly 40 years ago. Now I feel old.
Paul McDermott has the most angelic voice.... from his days as an alter boy
Jack - RUclips
No images just pure soulful voice.
