DAAS stands for Doug Anthony Allstars- a joke in itself which probably only Australians of a certain age would get. They were hilarious, irreverent and thoroughly outrageous, and then in the middle of their anarchic act would drop in a song like this, delivered with purity and soul ( and then perhaps segue into something like, and I kid you not, “I Fuck Dogs” - which itself is a must-see!). My favorite straight cover of there’s would be the Hunters and Collectors song Throw Your Arms Around Me - simply gorgeous rendition.

So context i everything:It's the 90s. They're a comedy trio -who happen to sing. It was a fashion back then for artists to do 'lounge' versions of pop songs. These guys did all kinds of satirical mashups - but this is a Kingston Trio style... They are showing you what the song is without soul. (Kind of showing you how white singers oftenobliterate the soul of the originals they cover) They put a different spin on their covers. They also had a lot of clever originals. They're in their 50s these days & don't perform together much any more just on special occasions. The lead - Paul McDermott really has a beautiful voice that can bring people to tears. Watch this one for another DAAS reunion performance from 2003 ruclips.net/video/q1fy9HY4gmE/видео.html
@@suave-rider Andrew Denton is a pioneer of that. Got all sorts of bands, including DAAS with Barry Crocker, to cover Stairway to Heaven when he was doing Money or the Gun, then had his 'breakfast show challenge' on MMM, which produced all sorts of weird & interesting covers. Incidentally, I just checked how old they are, and tomorrow is Paul's 60th birthday.
Australia. What can I say? Our comedy is absolutely unique and when you take Monkey Boy (Paul) with the voice of a choirboy and mix it with the amazing Tim and Richard … this is what you get. DAAS ROCK!!
The brilliant Doug Anthony All stars ..All fantastic singers but Paul McDermott in middle iv seen live in concert twice in his later years and he has the most belt it to the choir, gospel sounding voice .They done alot of Crazy stuff ! Happy Birthday for tomorrow Nick .
These boys are Australian Comedy and Musical ROYALTY. I remember being in the audience at one of their shows when I was 13 and getting that absolute SHIT ripped out of me by Paul because I had the Jason Donovan Bouffant Mullet and it was the absolute highlight of my teens. Performances like this, from them especially, were such a shock to so many viewers because of how they'd made their name, NOBODY expected them to have the pipes they have and I love it. It's almost like learning about Tim Minchin through songs like Prejudice and The Pope Song, then learning he does stuff like Not Perfect and White Wine In The Sun.
Yay!! I love DAAS! Amazingly messed up comedy then they go into serious mode and these voices just come out and surprise you 😍 Oh you want another one of their songs to check out? Serious or funny? Throw Your Arms Around Me for serious and I F*ck Dogs for funny 😂
CCR Creedence Clearwater Revival also had a huge run with this .... DAAS - you rarely knew what you were going to get... talented and hilarious ... I guess if you didn't grow up with them they could be an 'aquired taste' haha...
The Doug Anthony All Stars did a cover, with another Australian singer, of Stairway to Heaven for a show called "The Money or the Gun". In fact there were a number of acts to cover that song on that show, and an album produced called "Stairways to Heaven". One version, by a children's entertainer, actually made the top 10 in the UK charts.
Absolutely LOVE the Doug Anthony All Stars! oh and I know exactly what you mean about liking it, its a particular skill these guys have. They really are unique, and very talented.
Love DAAS, loved the Big Gig, a huge part of my teens 😁 I saw them live in Cairns back then, and still have DAAS Book on the shelf. Such loose cannons 😆
Yes Doug Anthony All Stars were very different I used to watch them every week on the Big Gig back in the 80's, think it was thursday nights on the ABC here in Australia, they were comedians first and foremost but the little bloke Paul McDermott in the middle is a very accomplished singer. Cant believe this was neatly 40 years ago. Now I feel old.
The group took its name from Doug Anthony a conservative Australian politician and former Deputy PM of Australia. Their musical comedy was outrageous along with their original takes on songs. One of their Darker songs was "I want to spill the blood of a hippy." Ahh happy days. Edit currently Richard Fidler is doing an oral history project called "The conversation hour," and written a number of books, Paul McDermott is still doing stand up comedy and Tim Ferguson is battling MS and is now confined to a wheel chair.
As others have commented, Doug Anthony All Stars were a comedy musical group out here. The guy on the guitar is Richard Fidler. Richard hosts a daily conversation hour program on ABC radio out here and he's absolutely brilliant. The man could have a conversation about the mating habit of a Tibetan Tick and every moment of it would be enthralling!
I loved the Big Gig. Tuesday 9:30 on ABC. So many great Aussie stand up and the resident cretins DAAS. On the occasion Flacco would perform with them. Fantastic. That was 30 years ago and I still remember Jean Kitson reading the news.
DAAS version of 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' by Hunters and Collectors is ICONIC! Paul and Tim (and Flacco) are still touring with DAAS but Tim has MS, so Paul pushes his wheelchair. Richard hosts an interesting show on ABC Radio called 'Conversations', and Tim has been a guest twice.
Oh man the Dougs. There's a sleeper of a related video sitting there - their The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan Is Dead medley is not well known but really showcases their talent, absolute beauty you wouldn't expect from a group with their style of comedy, but that's DAAS.
Glad you got a clip of this of just the song, there are other versions with their comedy routine prior to breaking out this song in the act and if you saw the routine before the song, it would have made no sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love DAAS however this moment in their spot on the big gig always never made sense to me as they were being wild and crazy and then they stopped and started singing this There was also a rumour that the lady in the audience with the tear on her cheek was planted and the tear was not real. Don’t know how true that is but Paul mcdermott’s voice is beautifully haunting in this song
The belt buckle, yes it says "sex" Haha. They were a comedy trio and usually sang shock-comedy. One of the first and best ever of their type with that. They have some great original songs like Broad Lic Nic and Funk You. This was always a weird inclusion to their songlist, but they have a serious of their own also that is called, Brendan Behan and it is just absolutely beautiful.
Dude. So glad you got to cover this. Used to give me goosies way back in the 90’s. These guys have a brilliant approach to this. You are sorta missing out. There is an extended version of this and people in the crowd tear up. Keep up the vibe with the random mixes. Rock on. Supercruiser.
Whoever requested this threw you a major softball on this group. Paul McDermott has one of the best voices you'll ever hear, and yes I know you've already heard John Farnham
love the Doug Anthony All-stars, DAAS. Aussie comic geniuses that only broke up when Tim, the tall one found out he had MS. They were most humour but did some great covers, Paul who is in the middle has an amazing voice. they reformed a few years ago without Richard who was the guitar player, Tim now in a wheelchair which that absolutely take the piss out of. I have been waiting for a PayPal day to request these guys, they do a sensation version of the Hunters and Collectors Throw your arms Around me, but it is their humour that one the fans over

I was wondering when you were going to come across DAAS. One of my favourite comedic groups ever. Please do more.
I can't believe this has made it overseas!! I saw them 3 times live as a teenager (I'm from Melbourne).
Paul McDermott is an incredible singer. He would never be in the music industry though.
Good on you doing this! 👍✌️🇦🇺
Pioneers of "Like a Version"
Happy Birthday
Yay!! I love DAAS! Amazingly messed up comedy then they go into serious mode and these voices just come out and surprise you 😍
Oh you want another one of their songs to check out? Serious or funny? Throw Your Arms Around Me for serious and I F*ck Dogs for funny 😂
Do The Dead Elvis for another funny
@@kevkoala 'my babys going to jail" for some old school laughs
Haha... good to see you've discovered the Doug Anthony Allstars :-)
Oh wow I saw them back in the early 90s while I was at university 😀 they are sooo good
Oh wow! I’m amazed that DAAS came up! Paul’s voice is like an angel!
I fkn KNEW I'd see your name here!!!
@@philjaensch8731 Glad I didn’t disappoint you! 🤣
Was going to suggest this, glad someone already did it.
Doug Anthony All Stars... popular comedy group back in the day. One of my faves - loved them. Edgy and funny. Great for the 90's.
This clip has to be about 25 years old, they were a popular political, satirical comedy trio.
I’ve always thought their ballads have a choirboy feel. Paul’s voice especially
Paul has the most beautiful voice in the world
Bloody hell! I made that programme, back in 1991! Still grouse.
"I don't know why this works but it does" is everything about Doug Anthony All stars LOL
Now do “throw your arms around me”
OMG! Such a throwback to the 90s (I remember still being in high school when DAAS called it quits) and I never expected to see you reacting to them 🤣
Was not unusual to see them busking in the early years ,great talent
These guys were a comedy group 😃🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Doug Anthony All Stars, heard this live in the 80’s on the “Big Gig” show. Moved me
This was good but its hard to pick a favourite from " Funk You ' " I want to spill the blood of a hippie " and "Commies for Christ" ... I love D.A.A.S
Joan of arc....
Glad you got a clip of this of just the song, there are other versions with their comedy routine prior to breaking out this song in the act and if you saw the routine before the song, it would have made no sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love DAAS however this moment in their spot on the big gig always never made sense to me as they were being wild and crazy and then they stopped and started singing this
There was also a rumour that the lady in the audience with the tear on her cheek was planted and the tear was not real. Don’t know how true that is but Paul mcdermott’s voice is beautifully haunting in this song
Actually right before this they had demanded the whole tv audience switch off their tv’s 🤣
Those outfits were their look. They wore them in every performance (and reportedly didn't clean them between gigs either 😳)
This has always been my favourite version
The belt buckle, yes it says "sex" Haha. They were a comedy trio and usually sang shock-comedy. One of the first and best ever of their type with that. They have some great original songs like Broad Lic Nic and Funk You. This was always a weird inclusion to their songlist, but they have a serious of their own also that is called, Brendan Behan and it is just absolutely beautiful.
LOVE DAAS
Hahaha It’s because their Aussie!!! Growing up with them I looovere DASS Doug Anthony Allstars were my life at 16!!!!
Dude. So glad you got to cover this. Used to give me goosies way back in the 90’s. These guys have a brilliant approach to this. You are sorta missing out. There is an extended version of this and people in the crowd tear up. Keep up the vibe with the random mixes. Rock on. Supercruiser.
This is unique. Such a kind way to say they're crap. 😂😂
They also did a great cover of Misunderstood, but, yeah, most of their songs are comedy originals that are VERY explicit.
They did good news week 😊 such a good show :)
hehehehehe patsy bisco book reading segment just relived itself in my memory
Whoever requested this threw you a major softball on this group. Paul McDermott has one of the best voices you'll ever hear, and yes I know you've already heard John Farnham
love the Doug Anthony All-stars, DAAS. Aussie comic geniuses that only broke up when Tim, the tall one found out he had MS. They were most humour but did some great covers, Paul who is in the middle has an amazing voice. they reformed a few years ago without Richard who was the guitar player, Tim now in a wheelchair which that absolutely take the piss out of.
I have been waiting for a PayPal day to request these guys, they do a sensation version of the Hunters and Collectors Throw your arms Around me, but it is their humour that one the fans over
Paul McDermott has the most angelic voice.... from his days as an alter boy
