My hometown! Grew up here in the 1950’s. Tommy, you did a beautiful job showing off some of the most beautiful parts of the Monterey Peninsula. We, Dad, Mom, my brother and I enjoyed salmon fishing in the bay. In 1956 or 57 Mom won the sport’s mans derby with a 56 lb. salmon. We caught crab in crab nets off the fisherman’s pier next to the pier you highlighted. They were so good! I kept my horse at a stable that was in Pacific Grove, but right next to 17 mile drive. We rode our horses all over the drive and some of the roads were trails back then. We especially enjoyed riding the trails along the ocean. One year we even watched some of the Crosby, (now AT&T Pro/Am ) Golf Tournament from horseback.we even enjoyed picking huckleberries up on a hill close to highway 68. There was a 25 meter swimming pool with low and high diving boards at PG beach next to Lover’s Point. There were also Glass bottom boats for the public to take rides on too. Last but not least, our high school band teacher was Glen Miller’s brother. He not only taught a marching band that performed in parades, but also had a pep band for football and basketball games, and a dance band for school dances and proms. There were a few students who had musical careers. Thanks again for the great vid!
Jane! What an incredible story you just shared with me. I could see your life unfolding in my imagination as you went crab fishing with your family to being in the high school band with Glen Miller's brother as your instructor (I searched who Glen was and it was fascinating to see the time frame your life took place in this part of history). I very much enjoyed your wholesome story. I wish to share more curious places with you guys and I'm happy my video inspired you to share your story with us here. Thank you oh so much Jane.
Herb Miller was our band leaders name. He tried to teach me the French Horn. Big mistake. We used to use coffee cans, with nail holes poked in them for a wire handle, to put our huckleberries in when we were up there picking them for my moms wonderful huckleberry pie. My little sister, brother, and myself used to walk down to the PG Plunge almost every day in the summer. Did you catch Tom Cod off the pier too, with a drop line you could buy at the pier’s bait shop? I remember diving off the end of that pier and swimming out to the glass bottom boats, all the time keeping an eye out for that dorsal fin slicing through the ice cold water coming my way. Terry Winn and I once swam out through the kelp to the rocks off of Marine Hopkins to see why they were so white. That was before I knew that Sea Lion was a delicious meal for great Whites. We could smell what made the rocks Whites before e we got there. Don’t know why it didn’t bother the hundreds of Seagulls and Pelicans that lived there. We also used to crab off the warf. We used a bicycle rim with discarded fish net from the sardine boats, tied to it with string, and a length of hemp rope. Wire a couple of fish heads to the center of the net for bait, which we would beg from the fish cutters right there on the warf. I guess everyone did that back then, before the Marina was put in, and the water became polluted. Did you ever ride your horse from the Jack’s Peak Stables? My sister worked there once upon a time. Wasn’t Betty Green a corker though. Tough as nails that woman. Back then “End Of The Lane Stables” seemed like it was at the end of the earth not just the end of David. One of my fondest memories was leaving the PG theater, walking across the street to Hector DeSmet’s bakery and buying a steaming hot loaf of French bread straight out of the oven with Terry and Fatboy. A loaf we would tare apart , our mouths watering in anticipation of the warm sweet delicacy, and share walking home in the dark. That was after watching a typical double feature, with cartoon of course and getting out about 10pm. Remember the sand dunes, replaced by something called Spanish Bay something or other. Terry, Fatboy and I used to take a 1X6 board about two foot long, plane one end up to create a lip prow and then wax the bottoms with paraffin. With that home made sand surfer we would climb up the dunes and ride down. The problem with that was that when you reached the bottom of the dunes you would hit the pine needles and keep going at high speed. Actually the problem was the Monterey pines at the bottom of the dunes. At that speed most of the time you had to tumble off the board to keep from smashing into a tree trunk. The real root of the problem of course, being honest, was that we were boys, and being such, invincible.... and supremely Stupid!
Hey Jim. Thank you taking the time to share your story. It's so cool to know that you and Jane had the same, talented teacher, small world! I also enjoyed the last bit about your adventures with your siblings.
@@tommyinsane9932 Not at all Tommy. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane that you inspired. I’m 75 now and those memories are so dear to me. It felt good putting them down for others to see a little of what it was like in those days. Since then they’ve fenced in Stanford’s Marine Hopkins marine research beach that my dog used to swim out to the barking sea-lions beyond the surf and swim with them. That’s the beach my friend Terry and I swam from to the bird rock from only to find out that the white on the rocks was the same thing you find on your windshield after seagulls have made a bombing run on your car. When I went to elementary school the canneries were in full operation. Both of my parents worked the canneries, my dad kept the giant machines running and my mother cut and packed sardines. What you see now is what’s built on the skeletal foundation of what was the sardine Capitol of the world. If you’ve read any Steinbeck you may have read about huckleberry hill where I grew up, or Cannery Row. Major Berry, a dear friend of ours that lived around the corner, caught frogs for Doc. My grandfather lived across the street from Steinbeck. Grandpa said he didn’t like him much, but I was too shy to ask why, still that stuck with me. One day the sardines just went away. I don’t know why, but that was Monterey‘s main source of income. That and For Ord basic training. Slowly, still too fast for me, the Monterey Peninsula became one big tourist destination. That’s what kept it alive. Back then Lighthouse St. was a two way street, not the traffic nightmare (for me) that it has become. We used to play in the Presidio. Then they even had a rifle range that we could pick up spent cartridges and pull bullet heads out of the targets back wall. Oh yeah before I forget we used to go under the canneries from one end of Cannery Row to the other. That was pretty tricky. Some of the boards were loose and off you made one small mistake you could end up in the ocean with no one to pull you out. A pretty scary consideration, but then as I said we were invincible and supremely stupid. Anyhow Tommy, I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to have shared those happy memories with you, and glad to pass them on.
I spent a year at Fort Ord, right there. I had a car and spent many hours exploring Cannery Row, onto Pacific Grove and of course Carmel beach. I drove and walked all over that peninsula. This was 51 years ago, and the area still holds my heart.
I can't imagine how much change this area went through in 51 years and the differences you see now and then. Thanks for sharing your story with us James
Great Video. I just Been There couple of days back and this place was so beautiful. I can't Describe in words and the Sunset at Carmel beach superb Beauty.
Was just there for a mini getaway for my husband's bday. We love visiting this area. Kids enjoyed Dennis the Menace Park, playing on the beach, bike rides and adults enjoyed the food. Yummy clam chowder.
I used to live here. It was beautiful. The cutest little stores. The houses were charming. I lived in the Carmel Highlands. The cutest little cottage. Carmel was like living in storybook land.
GREAT TOUR!! ,,...and I live here!! Thank you so very much for such a wonderful tour to send to my friends, elsewhere!! The VERY BEST Tour on line!! You did a MAGNIFICENT job covering the area!! Thanks AGAIN!! I hope that you make more tours of different areas in California!!
I’m grateful that you left an inspirational comment, especially as a resident! I have tons of places to share with you guys so I’m super excited about that. Thank you again for the compliment!
I grew up in Carmel and even went to college at CSUMB. Your video was such a good representation of the peninsula and all the gems it holds. After school we'd find ourselves at the bakery eating huge pretzels. So it brought a smile to my face seeing u enjoy the flavors of my childhood. Thanks for the video. Sending love from Los Angeles💜💛
Thanks Sara. A compliment from a local always means a ton to me. I also grew up on pretzels (cinnamon mmm) so I'm glad my childhood appetite brought you a smile :) hope Los Angeles is treating you well ✌️
Awesome video Tommy. It's been great to see a younger tourist crowd discover more of the Monterey Peninsula recently. I came here to mention that you went to the wrong beach in Carmel. River Beach is stunning and a local hangout, but Carmel Beach (the "Main One") is really the showstopper. I hope you'll come back and explore more of the Peninsula soon!
I live here! 20 years. Thanks for showcasing the places you highighted, your commentary was perfect. Made me happy to see you enjoying yourself with everything this area has to offer. 🙏🏻😊
That’s amazing and thank you! Are there other places you would recommend checking out? I’m looking at going back to find all the hidden passageways and courtyards 😁
Great video! It was fun watching you enjoy everything you saw. We honeymooned there 20+ years ago. What good memories. I especially liked all the detail you put into the part about Carmel. Good job
Thanks for bringing back memories of Monterey. I was stationed at DLIFLC at the Presidio for all of 1980. I love the beauty of the area. Much has changed since I was there it seems. Fort Ord was still operating, Monterey Bay aquarium didn’t exist-lots can change in 40years. I want to visit again and show the area to my wife who hasn’t seen it.
My bf and I went there this past weekend mainly for the aquarium. I left there more in love with the area than I ever thought I would for a place. I loved that everyone was so friendly, how calm it is compared to LA (where we live), the weather - just everything about Monterey is amazing and beautiful. Hope that we can go back for another weekend and explore more areas!
It's sooo much more relaxed than LA that's for sure. There's a peaceful, homey, vacation vibe I feel every time I visit. I'm happy you got to experience it for yourself and the AMAZING aquarium. Hope you get to visit again!
Another excellent vlog! You really captured Carmel and Monterey. You may need to go there again to capture some places you missed. There is Marina State beach where folks can go hang gliding and so fun watching them take off, Carmel Mission the 1st Mission of California, near the Monterey wharf is the 1st theater of CA, Dennis the Menace park where people can paddle boat and Seaside beach where you'll see many flying some cool kites. Wow, the memories! So nice growing up there. Carmel and the beach is also very pet friendly from what I remember. Gorgeous to watch the sunsets! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the tour. Many memories with the wife in our younger days exploring all around there. We sold our house in Cupertino in 2003 and headed east for an early retirement.
My favorite place in that area is Lover's Point. I stayed at a hotel across the street from there and it was awesome having my coffee there every morning. I'm going on a drive up the coast to Monterey soon so thanks for the video.
That was very beautiful we were just there this weekend it was really nice thank you for exploring we didn't go to far into it next now I know very beautiful views
Hey Tommy. Great tour, really enjoyed every min. The dunes were something else you look like you were flying at that summit. My fav visit was Carmel. You could just feel the vibe.
Nice! Visited this area back in my younger years. All are blessed to have lived there. It would be Heaven to be able to live or heck least visit again. 💖
Thanks for sharing, My daughter was stationed in the Monterey area while in the army and decided to stay in that area after she got out. I live in Illinois and haven’t had a chance to visit yet so loved the tour!
this video brought back precious memories...thank you, Tommy! I lived there for a short 18 months back in 2000 and loved it! Was also a volunteer visitor-guide at the Monterey Bay Aquarium🙏💗
What an experience you must’ve had Nicole, and working inside that majestic aquarium too! I’m happy to have been able to bring those memories back for you ✌️
I was born in Carmel in 1959. The hospital is no longer there. Grew up in Monterey/seaside. Spent many hours climbing the rocks on the beach, checking out the tide pools and playing in Dennis the Menace Park.
I lived on the Monterey Peninsula for over 10 years, and I miss it so. Thanks for this wonderful video! I'm going to have to subscribe to your channel...
Hi Tommy, The University was the best! What a great location. Santa Barbara has a really nice Fisherman’s wharf too. I hope you were able to visit it and have some good Sea Food. So much fun to visit all the places along the coast. See you in the next video.😊
Hey Joyce, The university’s beach access was the best eye candy. Speaking of Fisherman’s wharf, that’s where I went the next day and got seafood so lookout for that video next! Santa Barbara was a lot of fun so I’ll see you there in the next video 😄
Great video. I'm preparing to go on a road trip from LA to San Francisco and your video gives me a lot of good ideas of places to visit along the way. Thx!
Your video gives me more insight on where to go. Wife and I already plan on going there for a couple days for our anniversary. Thanks to you it seems that we made a good choice
Thank you for sharing. My sister and brother-in-law live in Aptos. When I visit, they take me there and I look forward to it. Next time bring some folding chairs and just sit at the beach and enjoy!!!!
This was a great tour, it almost made me feel I was there, and you didn't rush through it or have overpowering music. Also I liked the way you went to little out-of-the-way places too, giving the viewer a real 'feel' of the place.
@@tommyinsane9932 Good Morning Tommy, YES this is really a very lovely place there to live. Sooooo calm harmonic simply beautiful!!!! The BEACH is a DREAM the Ocean the Sand there, all. WOW. Carmel and Monterey is very interesting and nice with a special CHARME. And You Tommy does this Video great, Compliment!! 👍See YOU 😊. MANY THANKS AND GREETINGS ❤️
@@tommyinsane9932 Good Morning, super news Tommy from California. YES, show more about the beautiful Places there in Cali. I really love it. GREETINGS 😊
We love Carmel and Monterey. Prior to COVID, we make our yearly trip up there with family. It's beautiful. Hopefully, when all of this is over we can start making those trips again. Thanks for sharing Tommy.
@@tommyinsane9932 Yes we love the beautiful beaches. You were right there on Ocean Ave. where there's that white sand beach. Then there's Moss Landing with what looks like an endless distance of seashore. Most of the time there are few to no one so it's like a huge beach to yourself. We stayed at Asilomar Conference Ground. Almost like the mountain on one side with roaming deers and on the opposite side is the beach. Some miles south of Carmel on the 1, is the Pfeiffer Beach with purple sands.. it's beautiful. Again thanks for sharing, we are lucky that we don't have to go far to enjoy the beauty of the California Coast.
Moss Landing and Asilomar Conference Ground are on my list now, thank you! I went to Pfeiffer Beach and the rocky cliffs from the bottom looking up is really unique. I agree with the luck which is why I make these videos as I know other people can't easily reach these beautiful places like we can
Amazing video, Tommy! Felt like I was there with you almost. Really, I've seen a lot of videos of the area now, since I've been planning a trip there, but yours is the best one on RUclips I've seen yet. Amazing quality, excellent and extensive view of each site, and you made it just feet like a really good tour. Thanks! Like I didn't even know there was a little beach at Lover's Point there--will have to check that out now. Thanks again!
Phillip! Thank you for commenting inspiring words of feedback. I’m honored to know that I was able to help with your itinerary ideas. The beach at Lover’s Point is definitely a good break from the usual beach crowds. You’re welcome and I hope your trip turns out super fun!
Wow. Thank you for inspiring me to get out more to explore what’s in my own backyard. Wish I could join you on your next adventure so I can hold the camera for you as you point out landmarks and hotspots.
I'm happy to have inspired you to want to explore your backyard Cindy! (pretty envious btw) a camera person would be pretty nice for me to roam freely :) As for pointing stuff out, it's whatever catches my eyes!
Tommy, I loved your video. You have a wonderful, easy and relaxed way of showing others what you enjoy in your travels. Quite different from other travel videos out there that are more about video wizardry and 'look at me, I'm so great' attitude. That said, I would love to know more about the gear you used to make this video. Thanks.
Thank you for the encouraging words Sandeep. I do my best to focus the videos on you rather than myself by guiding you throughout this landscape we call California. I plan to make a video about my equipment but for now I used a Panasonic GH5 and Lumix 12-35 F2.4 for this specific video ✌️
I enjoyed your video as it brought back a lot of memories. I wish you had pointed out more of the history, as you were standing right in front of the Old Customs House but were pointing at some shops in the opposite direction. Lover's Point is actually in Pacific Grove and PG has a really nice rock museum if it is still there. It was nice to see some other things like trees and beaches for a change as a lot of DYI videos never get past the Craft & Crap Shops and look more like advertising than a tour. Sand City back in the day was next to Fort Ord and we used to see the Navy Seals training on the beach. I am going to check out your Big Sur video next. Keep it up. Thank You!
I'm not much of a historian, but find little facts here and there to be cool to know such as the old customs house. It collected duty fees on foreign goods at the bay as it was california's main point of entry vs today which is San Francisco. Also, Monterey was the original capitol of California!! Thanks for telling us about Fort Ord and the Navy Seals, that must've been amazing to have witnessed. And thank you for taking your time to post your personal thoughts on my video Dosan, have a great year!
Oh awesome ! I’ve been there since last visited 2015 I’m hoping getting married go onto 17 mile drive with my to be husband and my disabled sister together and explore all over wonderful places I loved the seals among others as for dining at Bubba Gump! I’ll be missing the aquarium a lot 😥 ... Thank you Tommy for doing that and really encouraged me !!!! Stay healthy 👍🏻
Congrats Dianne! It sounds like you guys are going to have a great time there, 17 Mile Drive, seal watching, and Bubba Gump! As for Monterey Bay Aquarium, they reopen May 15th! Glad I encouraged you to explore that beauty of a place ❤️🌞

Thank you! I definitely missed all those places you mentioned and now I know what to see on my next visit. Can’t wait for summer! 🏖️
Thanks for your video, pretty useful and interesting.
Your comment inspires me to make more, thank you! and your most welcome ✌️
Thanks for the tour. Many memories with the wife in our younger days exploring all around there. We sold our house in Cupertino in 2003 and headed east for an early retirement.
Sounds like you guys had a blast here in California, before moving east. Congrats on the early retirement, I'm happy for the both of you!
Oh wow , i have a trip planned for monterey in August! After watching this I can't wait to see it in person !
August should welcome you with perfect weather and Monterey Bay Aquarium will be open by then. Have a great adventure!
Superb 🏖beach n amazing 🌊waves
Yes!!
I grew up here, I miss it so much, such beauty it's amazing, home sweet home
Very amazing area, I hope you can see it again soon
My favorite place in that area is Lover's Point. I stayed at a hotel across the street from there and it was awesome having my coffee there every morning. I'm going on a drive up the coast to Monterey soon so thanks for the video.
That sounds like a dream and I’m glad it brought back memories for you. Enjoy your trip!
@@tommyinsane9932 thanks. I am excited to be returning to California for some visiting with family and traveling.
Welcome back!
That was very beautiful we were just there this weekend it was really nice thank you for exploring we didn't go to far into it next now I know very beautiful views
I'm happy to know that you and your family got to experience this beautiful place
Hey Tommy. Great tour, really enjoyed every min. The dunes were something else you look like you were flying at that summit. My fav visit was Carmel. You could just feel the vibe.
Glad you enjoyed my tour of this amazing place. It's a whole other feeling than other beach towns that's for sure
Nice! Visited this area back in my younger years. All are blessed to have lived there. It would be Heaven to be able to live or heck least visit again. 💖
Hope you get to visit again ✌️
Thanks for sharing, My daughter was stationed in the Monterey area while in the army and decided to stay in that area after she got out. I live in Illinois and haven’t had a chance to visit yet so loved the tour!
I'm happy I was able to give you an idea of where your daughter lives Susan! Hopefully you get to visit her soon so she can show you around herself ✌️
We are going to Monterey on Monday for a week. I can’t wait to check out all of the places you went, especially that bakery in Carmel.
A week, nice ! I hope you guys have a blast and enjoy the bakery !
this video brought back precious memories...thank you, Tommy!
Excellent video. I've done this trip a few times over the years from San Francisco to L A.
That’s a great route for a road trip, haven’t done it myself
I lived on the Monterey Peninsula for over 10 years, and I miss it so. Thanks for this wonderful video! I'm going to have to subscribe to your channel...
Wow 10 years! That's a lot of memories of a beautiful place I bet. Thank you William! 🙏
Great video Tommy I was there 20 years ago. From Suffolk, England
20 years ago wow! I'm happy you got to see it again. Thank you Vicci
I love how you didn’t stick to a script and let yourself naturally talk. I laughed out loud when you were talking about Ghiradelli
That word gets me every time haha glad you enjoyed my random talks nick!
Really good 🎥 I been working around area for years. Fantastic place to visit
Working there especially with good weather, I bet! Happy you enjoyed the video 👍

Thank you ,. Hello from Rancho Mirage California 🇺🇸
Hello Southern California! Glad you liked the video ✌️
Hi Tommy,
The University was the best! What a great location. Santa Barbara has a really nice Fisherman’s wharf too. I hope you were able to visit it and have some good Sea Food.
So much fun to visit all the places along the coast.
See you in the next video.😊
Hey Joyce,
The university’s beach access was the best eye candy. Speaking of Fisherman’s wharf, that’s where I went the next day and got seafood so lookout for that video next! Santa Barbara was a lot of fun so I’ll see you there in the next video 😄
That’s awesome! The trees and the ocean are so beautiful!
Right?!
I'll visit Monterey next week. Thanks I need this good intro... I feel I wanna go now!
Spring is here and the weather is bright and breezy. You should totally go soon Francis!
Great video. I'm preparing to go on a road trip from LA to San Francisco and your video gives me a lot of good ideas of places to visit along the way. Thx!

Thank you for sharing. My sister and brother-in-law live in Aptos. When I visit, they take me there and I look forward to it. Next time bring some folding chairs and just sit at the beach and enjoy!!!!
How nice of them to show you around. Ah the chairs with the views/sounds plus sunny weather is oh so magical!
Thanks Tommy, I'll be going to Monterey tomorrow! Looking forward to a great time!
Dude I hope you have a blast!! ✌️
Loved it all. Carmel looks like a pretty town.
A pretty beach town without the beach town vibes, very different. Thank you for watching!

I'm happy you enjoyed the Doan, thank you!
Very cinematic I respect your effort and hope to see great things from you👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I've got lots of cool places in mind for the future so stay tuned!
Will be visiting next month. Thank you for the video.
I wish you guys a great time with amazing weather ☀️
This was a great tour, it almost made me feel I was there, and you didn't rush through it or have overpowering music. Also I liked the way you went to little out-of-the-way places too, giving the viewer a real 'feel' of the place.
Thank you for your constructive feedback Emily, it helps to know what things to keep or take out in my future videos ✌️
MEGAAAAA SUUUUPER 👍👌I LOVE IT GREETINGS Thank's for showing such beautiful Beaches / Places there. TOP FACZINANTE
Thank you for your amazing compliment 🙏❤️ I'm happy you found this place as beautiful as I did when I first saw it
@@tommyinsane9932 Good Morning Tommy, YES this is really a very lovely place there to live.
I'm super happy you enjoyed the different sights and sound of Carmel and Monterey Daniela. I plan to show more beautiful nature places in California 😊
@@tommyinsane9932 Good Morning, super news Tommy from California. YES, show more about the beautiful Places there in Cali. I really love it. GREETINGS 😊
Native of California and Carmel and Monterey are my favorite cities. Have been here at least 12 or more times and love it.
Are you me? That's how I feel + San Diego
I love this place. So miss the highway 1 cities. Peace and joy 😊 thanks 8888
Have a good day ✌️
We love Carmel and Monterey. Prior to COVID, we make our yearly trip up there with family. It's beautiful. Hopefully, when all of this is over we can start making those trips again. Thanks for sharing Tommy.
If you don't mind me asking, what activities do you guys enjoy at those places? I'm wondering if there is anything I'm missing. And you're welcome :)
You’re welcome and I hope your trip turns out super fun!
this is a good video. pleasure to watch.
I'm happy you enjoyed it
Very well made video and commentary. Thank you.
Thank you for the inspiring compliment
Great video Tommy! I plan to visit the area in September. Can’t wait:)
Happy you enjoyed it Tony! Apparently September is the best time to visit Carmel because of warm, clear weather (thanks Google) Great plan!
Wow beautiful view
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!
Right?! You're welcome 🙂
Thanks for the Staycation 😊👍
You're welcome ✌️
Beautiful!! Carmel is beautiful
Very much!!
Sure is.rog.

Heading up here in a few weeks! I can’t wait
Hope you have a blast at this magical place!
Great video..well.be there in a few hours !
Thanks and have fun!
Thank you for a great video, been there before but this video will help me in my next trip soon
I do plan to make another video focused on this place and thank you 👍
awesome video! thank you so much!
I'm happy you enjoyed it! You're very welcome ✌️
Awesome beach spots!
Very much agreed!
Love your videos!
That means a lot to me thank you Malizza 🙏❤️
Carmel Bakery is my must do spot whenever I pass through Carmel, then down to the white sand beach to watch the waves roll in and out.
Are we the same person?? That's my go to as well!
Born and raised in Monterey county❤️
Loved Carmel and lovers point
The best places !
