For people who don’t know about Florence Price, she was a black American composer that lived 1887-1953. She was the first Black woman to have symphony performed by a major US orchestra. Although her music was well received, she fought an uphill battle to have a career due to the discrimination towards women and people of colour.
Her music is often described as mixing romantic European composition styles with the spirituals of Black American churches. Similar to many prolific composers of the time, she mixed her cultural upbringing and heritage with traditional orchestral writing techniques.
Price’s music has seen a major renaissance in the past few years. Many lost scores were discovered in a family property that were unknown and this rediscovery has led to orchestras all over the world to start performing her music.
