I grew up in extreme DV. My bio dad beat my mother and my sister, myself until one day my mom was at work, my oldest sister at school. He got high and angry, shoved my baby sister in her crib in the closet. I hid behind a chair, he passed out. I crawled to her crib to sit by her. Are cried for hours. Till she puked, snd peed through her diaper. 10 hours later my mom returned from work. She freaked out, we left that night. Blake is privileged. Insensitive. Ignorance. I went on and chose relationships that lead to DV. Because it’s what I knew. I eventually broke the cycle. But you aren’t the same ever again.
You’ve been through so much & you were protecting your sister during such a vulnerable age you BOTH were. Also, so proud of you for breaking the DV cycle. You’re a warrior & deserve all the peace in the future. ❤
The PR of grab your girlfriends, wear your florals to watch me get thrown down stairs...WTF?? I left my abuser 3 years ago. I was so mentally abused I didn't recognize myself. I went to the police after a S/A. The police were a joke. The abuser took out a restraining order against me...the female judge sided with him, he has a friend as the police Sargent. I saw the movie. Ryle's character...that charisma, that charm...recognized it. It's intoxicating. He played his character well...and when he changed into the abuser...his eyes changed. Know that all too well. Blake is so wrong. She missed an opportunity to bring so much more awareness and support to IPDV.
Honestly even "grab your friends" is too far for me. I had what I consider a mild terrible relationship in that I'm not sure whether to say he was toxic or whether he was 'really' abusive. And even then, I had no friends off the Internet for multiple years. My emotional reserves were so depleted that I didn't even have it in me to give advice to a sibling about a situation with one of our parents. I wouldn't have been able to watch something like this for several years. And I still can't watch videos about people that remind me too closely of my ex (ie I can only watch the first half of hbomberguy's plagiarism video because watching videos of James Somerton, especially in distress, is triggering for me)
You are absolutely right. She had an opportunity to educate and advocate for women (and men) who experience DV and the social stigmas around it and completely dropped the ball.
My heart go out to everyone who has ever had to deal with DV (ans really and form of abuse) throughout their lives. Wish you the best and hopefully you'll be able to let go of all the scars inflincted on you❤❤
I cringed so hard when Blake said “But I wonder if they ask men about the clothes” since she makes being fashionable her entire personality. She was really trying to create her Scarlett moment while starring in a Woody Allen movie
@@NachoAE360Good point, but very few people remember that... And I get the feeling Blake would like to be thought of as a "serious" actress that tackles very deep issues, but just like the promotion for this movie, she's showing that she cannot talk about deep issues. She just comes off very shallow.
I just want to say- my mom enjoys Blake. My mom is a DV survivor. She went to see this movie when I told her not to because she just went off of the way this was marketed by Blake. My mom didn’t listen- went. Left in tears because it was too similar of experiences she had. Should my mom have done more research? Yeah. But should Blake should have marketed the movie correctly? ABSOLUTELY.
Wait ?! So the movie was supposed to come out in February, around Valentine's Day ? A movie about DV coming out on the day dedicated to lovers ? Well, that's not insensitive at all.
It wouldn't be the first time. 50 Shades of Gray were also marketed as Valentine's Day movies - although the content is basically a rich abusive and controlling weirdo entrapping an inexperienced and naive intern/virgin.
I know that must be so painful, but thank you for the reminder that literal lives are on the line. Of all our social problems, this one goes on the ACT NOW & END THIS list. Thank you for reminding us we fight for our friends, our moms & sisters & aunties & cousins, and we fight for our own lives. I’ve seen the most confident, high powered women turned upside down & devastated by just one new relationship. We who haven’t experienced it often think we know how to avoid it - likely we’ve just been lucky. It’s a lifelong job to keep ourselves safe.
Thank goodness someone said it. Her hair doesn't look healthy. It was boggling to me that she was promoting a hair care brand. She's delusional about her hair being anything special.
I guess the algorithm brought me here and let me tell you that this is one of the best videos I’ve watched about this subject. Clear, direct and informative. Great job 👍🏼👍🏼
Blake is solely led by her ego, she was never going to be able to play this role. Having read the book (which reads like a wattpad fic)its clear that only Justin Baldoni tried to do it justice. I hope to see him in more stuff!!
i enjoyed the film a lot. i think it was made well and i appreciate the overall message. it does, however, have a bunch of clichés and the drama around the promotion of the film detracts from the real issue of DV. justin is doing it justice but everyone else has severely dropped the ball.
Blake taught everyone why she isn’t taken seriously because she’s not a serious person, she comes across as airheaded, shallow and self interested. Justin is an actual artist who’s passionate about his work, Blake is a commercial player who is passionate about herself and the light fare that interests her is fashion and beauty and that’s all she can really handle intellectually imo.
I used to like Blake after Gossip Girl, for her look, always successful red carpet performance, and somewhat whimsical wittiness. I also was aware that she’s was not intelligent enough to be a top actress, although I was hoping age and experience add some weight to her character. But after so many years, she stays in the gossip girl vibe, with not so much growth in acting or intelligence, but more self-assumed commercial shrewdness. It’s a pity..
This is why I love Julia Roberts… Sleeping with the Enemy… she got it, she had empathy, and she understood the impact her platform had. Blake… sit down - you didn’t deserve that role and the way you have made a joke of DV is disgusting.
...the same Julia Roberts who has been infamously known throughout her career to be one of the most horrible and ego-centric people to just about everyone? THAT Julia Roberts? 🤔
@@katw.6519 I've never seen and heard Roberts being disrespectful and rude to anyone (unlike B. Lively), and have no time for unsubstantiated rumours, but she obviously took her role in Sleeping with the Enemy seriously. Her portraying of a physically and mentally abused woman was impeccable, and I do not recall her giggling like a teenager when interviewed about the movie, and trying to shove her haircare and ALCOHOL brand down our throaths either.
@@katw.6519 I have never heard rumours about Julia Roberts being a horible person (thought that does not mean that she isn't). Having said that, her answer was so incredibly nuanced and million times better than what Blake does. Maybe you haven't seen Sleeping with the enemy so you don't know why her reply was so significant?
My first relationship (14yrs old) was emotionally abusive in so many ways. My boyfriend who was only a year older, would tell me he would kill himself if I ever left him, pretending one time that he had cut his wrists and was bleeding out while on the phone with me. So of course being 14 I believed him, I thought if I EVER left him he would meet his maker, and it would be on me. I put up with his crap for about a year, he lived an hour or so away so it was long distance, but he manipulated me so much to the point where I wouldn’t hang out with any friends who were male, and even stopped hanging out with my girl friends because it became too much of a hassle to explain to him WHY I would want to hang out with friends (because he didn’t like them). Called me fourty something times once when I accidentally left my phone home. That type of shit was a regular thing. One day I was crying (because of him) and my friends older sister saw me (I was at the beach by myself) and asked me what was wrong, so I told her essentially everything and how I wanted to leave him but I was terrified to do so. She was beyond pissed what he was doing to me, took my phone from me and called him and did it for me, stayed with me for I don’t even know how long because he kept calling back after she told him it was over. I WAS SO SCARED OF HIM and he didn’t even live anywhere near me, the emotional abuse that can go along with physical/psychological abuse is intense. Thats what a lot of people don’t understand, you don’t feel safe anywhere. Even if you do leave, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out. I will forever be grateful for my friends sister for doing that for me, for helping through something it took me years to even understand. Domestic violence isn’t just physical, and when Justin said “the question shouldn’t be why don’t you leave? It should be why do men (and women) choose to harm?” That really hit home for me, if it was ever as easy as just “leaving” it wouldn’t be such an issue. It makes my blood boil hearing her changing the subject to teeth when talking about something so serious and misunderstood. This ones for you Blake 🖕🏻
That is so very important! I was in an emotionally abusive friendship and there was always the threat of: "If you leave, I'm going to end myself." She had attempted it before and also harmed herself, so I took that seriously. Boundaries were pushed slowly and it took me years to end the relationship. It's not easy to just stop caring about being responsible for the death of someone you also have/had good times with.
Dude, I relate so much, my ex was emotionally abusive to me and told me he’d kill himself if I ever left. He’s in the army so it’s a long distance relationship but he was unhealthily clingy, he would call constantly and sometimes if I couldn’t talk to him enough in one day he’d lash out on me and it was exhausting. He verbally abused me, at one point even threatening to hit me but would always apologize after, and I loved him so I stayed (not to mention I was terrified he’d commit suicide if I left) but about after a year I just couldn’t take it anymore. I never told anyone about what was going on but I finally told my sister and my friend about it. My sister was shocked and couldn’t believe how he treated me, and eventually my friend finally blocked him on my phone. All of this just happened a few days ago, and even after all the thing he’s said to me, I still miss him because I really did (and still do) love him but I had to come to terms with the fact that how he was treating me wasn’t right, and the relationship had to come to an end. It really does break you down
No one. No one can be THIS repeatedly tone deaf without being somewhat narcissistically empty and malicious. That she and Taylor are besties makes so much sense. And no, Blake isn’t known for her great hair.
Totally agree! What's with the obsession to buy their products! There are so many companies out there to choose from. Why is it have to be a celebrity product???
She's basically Serena. Rude and entitled. She's not even a great actress and is mainly known as someone's wife 😂😂 It's about time she was exposed for being rude.
She’s definitely not just known as someone’s wife. Not sure what type of rock you’re living under but she was very well known way before she ever even met Ryan. You must’ve missed 6 years of gossip girl
@@stephroblejo she definitely ain’t. She would’ve been successful without Ryan too. If anything, Taylor gave her more of a boost than Ryan. Y’all act like she was some unknown random girl before she met him.
People obsessed with narcissistic hollyweird entitled fake people actually creep me out. Like I truly worry about their sanity and well being. Well I used to, now I'm more aware of the masses swimming in the shallows, and that observation has solved a lot of my confusion
The silver lining of this scandal is that the subject of DV is getting more attention. I was shocked to learn from a news interview of a woman running a shelter for battered women that in the state of Texas 1 in 3 women suffer DV! That’s an insanely high stat.
And tbh, there’s no reason that Texas would be an outlier. Those numbers are on par with national data (there are endless ways to measure this, which is why there are so many different stats, but 25-33% lifetime DV experience seems very accurate. Except on reservations where rates go up to 40%. Race of partner doesn’t matter, it’s not cultural, it’s about wretched law enforcement & how poverty makes everything even worse. States like Florida & Texas just seem to be full of nutters, irl, they’ve both experienced massive population booms & we just arent used to how many people live in those states. It’s a mistake to ever correlate politics with DV, btw, conservative vs liberal has little impact on actual behavior in a relationship. A huge percentage of MMIW are victims of DV who were completely failed by a complex judicial system that requires careful, expert change to protect victims AND not strip indigenous nations of their sovereign status. All women deserve protection, but our native women are at extreme risk & need our voices to boost their volume.
I feel like Setting Up a foundation where I will teach Girls as Young as Nine or Ten years Old and Women of ALL COLORS, RACES, ETHNICITIES, BACKGROUND about how to be Confident, Tough, and Defend themselves Not just Physically, but Psychologically as Well. The Red flags Are Always there, but Women Stay because of Our nature of Nurturing.
DV is not about expensive shoes, floral patterned clothes, a launch of a bad hair care line, a booze line, or an actress with her head up her a$$…it is about hell on earth, it’s about a tortured life. The real meaning to this movie has gone right over Blake’s shallow head. She doesn’t have the depth of character to play a part in this movie, or to discuss it later. Blake, volunteering at a DV shelter would do you a world of good! You don’t give a crap about DV victims…”it’s not in your realm of understanding”.
She seems like the pretty and spoiled mean girl in school. You know the one who would for whatever reason would get away with being mean. Who used her looks to make people think that she’s nice when she really isn’t.
THIS is what aggrevated me the most in this whole video...when the blonde interviewer asked about the costumes for the (Woody Allen) movie and what it was like to be able to wear that era's clothes during the movie, Blake says "everyone just wants to talk about the clothes. I wonder if they ever ask the men about the clothes?" Blake, the only thing you EVER talk about are clothes!! Do you not see your own hypocracy? You're asked about the themes of the movie and start talking about teeth crystals. You're asked about the themes of the movie and mention how the Louboutins you were wearing in a dance scene where a close up of the shoes were shown, actually belonged to you. If you can tear yourself away from looking at yourself in a mirror for five minutes, if that's at all possible, start thinking about the REAL women who have dealt with horrible DV and are going to see this movie, and realise the very LAST thing they care about are floral dresses. Your entitlement and your vapid self obsession are not doing you or your career any favours.
Yes. She was trying to again attach herself to a legitimate problem is a very problematic way. Clothes are not a good topic for all interviews, and women often *are* treated unfairly with this, but it was DEFINITELY a good topic for this one. I felt soooo bad for that interviewer. Blake can't have it both ways like that.
This is a really interesting dive into the really messed up world of celeb brands. And also, extra Thanks for making a non alarmist and clear video about the Blake/ends with us situation. It's the best I've seen :) you handle the nuances of a messy situation really well!
Girl, i don't know you or your brand, but i was impressed by the amount of research and care you put into this and noticed you did not just want to start something, but were very balanced. Subscribed
Justin-I have a back injury. I need to make sure I don't hurt myself during this scene. Blake- He is fat shaming me! Interviewer- Congrats on your little bump Blake- congrats on *your* little bump Not only did Blake fat shame the interviewee, but the woman was also someone who struggled deeply with infertility.
Very obnoxious. Sometimes there is a good reason to keep a narcissist out of the limelight!!!! It’s all cringe for sure. I’ve never really heard her before, and oh my lord I was shocked how she was promoting this movie???? How did the author react when she was treating this very serious topic, happens to so many, I know! They need to get her off these interviews. Isn’t a Disney flick with gumdrops and rainbows. I am curious if this is her personality 24/7 or she’s portraying an airhead stupid shallow chick
And even if Kjersti didn't have fertility issues, why would she say that?!! That FACE she made just before saying it was creepy af. Like Blake was staring THROUGH Kjersti. I don't know if other people felt that way.
@@sarahporter9979 I agree with you, when I saw someone playing the clip I had no idea why, or what was going on but thought what’s wrong with this chick
The interviewer was rude referring first to the "bump" and traditionally asking sexist superficial questions to actresses !! That is why Blake was sarcastic ! Other actresses have the same reaction !!
That clip made me wonder if this was Blake’s first time being pregnant because if no, then she should know that someone saying „Congrats on your little bump.“ means they say „hey look at that! Your kid is growing so fast, how adorable.“ Like how can mistake someone complementing you for becoming a mom for fat shaming?
I can’t fathom Taylor Swift or Ryan Reynolds being so dense as to encourage her to market the movie the way she has. Justin’s point about why we ask “why do women stay” instead of “why do men harm” is SO spot on. As a survivor of DV, I am beyond disappointed in the marketing of this film. “Grab your friends and wear your florals” … WHAT?!?? Trash
The really crazy thing is there are people in Hollyweird who make a career out of keeping people like Blake from outing themselves - people who literally coach the stars on how to give empathetic responses: so how did her entire team miss out on the need for that?!?
Excellent point about consent. On the opening weekend in London, at a major shopping centre, they set up a flower stand, with the girls handing out flyers wearing florist aprons. It looked like an Interflora stand. In no way would a person think this movie was about DV. It was terrible optics. With all the money Ryan has, you would think they could have afforded a few marketing experts and run past their ideas through a DV charity. Christy Turlington has a charity in this space.
Kait, you have touched on so many good points here in such an articulate, engaging and thoughtful way. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak on so many women’s truths and shed light on the very possible but disappointing overlooked motivations of Blake Lively.
I am a survivor of DV and Blake's flippant attitude in her interviews really tick me off. I am on permanent disability due to my abuser, soon-to-be ex-husband. She has no idea the depths that DV damage causes someone especially mentally. It will take years to try and heal from the layers of hurt and pain. She should have been focused on educating herself on the subject of DV instead of promoting herself and her brands. When you said that you believe she didn't intentionally try to cause harm I have to disagree. It's obvious that she genuinely doesn't care. Because if she had one ounce of sensitivity to the subject she wouldn't have taken the route that she has. She is too self absorbed and self centered.
I think so, too - DV is a polarizing topic and that's why she chose it! No adult in their right mind would promote it as if it was a romcom, especially since she seems to think that romcoms don't make her look like a "serious" actress...she wanted that validation but she couldn't care less about DV and its survivors, as you can see by her flat affect throughout the promo interviews.
This initially wasn't on my radar of concern UNTIL I learned that Lively was promoting her alcohol brand WHILE promoting her movie about DV. I'm like "ma'am, excuse me???" Both my parents were alcoholics and my father was a mean, violent alcoholic. Honestly, how is Blake Lively so excruciatingly tone-deaf and unaware of herself? I can't imagine the privilege of being so oblique. I think you did so well explaining the issues surrounding her behavior in this self-created mess. More commentary videos would be a nice addition to your channel imo.
I’m so sorry. I’ve had my own experiences with alcohol and abuse and this whole situation has disgusted me. I’m definitely leaning towards more commentary videos since that’s what audiences are watching, so I’m glad that you like them!
You have eloquently stated how inappropriate Blake Lively's marketing of drinks and mixers is on the back of this film. What makes it worse is that Lively actually named one of her mixers after the abusive character, Ryle. How she could not see the inappropriateness of that, I will never comprehend.
You've got to be one of the most intelligent and thoughtful commentators. I loved your video. Was not predictive, biased or boring. You appear credible, get straight to the point & I agree with you on this topic.
My stepdad beat the crap out of mom and then me. Sa my younger sister. We lived in fear for 12 years. My sister committed suicide due to the trauma. I’m now 57, and I still have nightmares, still react as if it was still ongoing. Single, since I don't know how a healthy relationship works. It does define you. She is so out of touch. She did no research at all.
I'm so very sorry you loved through all that. I grew up in a DV home as well. When I was 16 my dad passed away. And it sounds crazy but it was such a relief. Then when I was 25 my sister committed suicide due to all the trauma we lived through. I'm 31 now and still have yet to find a decent guy to date. I'm afraid of men. I totally understand where you're coming from.
I am so sorry for what you went through. I hope that you are safe now. I know the grief from losing your sister will never go away. May you find some healing from the horror you had to endure.
Her hair looks like real hair. Real hair that you get when your nearly 40 and have been bleaching it for your entire life. The hair you see in most beauty campaigns isn't indicitive of the kind of hair you'll actually get from the products. I bought her line because it was marketed as being a drugstore alternative to Keratase and it fits that bill and smells amazing. The nourishing shampoo being a clarifying shampoo actually makes sense because a conditioner/mask isn't going to penetrate if your hair is dirty but you don't need to use that kind of shampoo for every wash so you switch to the other pair which is a milder shampoo and a mask with more protein. Moisturizing and protein conditioners are different kinds. So it makes sense even if it ends up being more products that the usual 2 step shampoo and conditioner. But not every product is going to be for everyone. Also lets be real she's not making the formulas herself.
Agreed, I think she did so well in Gossip girl because she herself is the out of touch aristocrat she played. It’s a struggle for her to play a very human roll with real human turmoil. Because many of these topics like you said, she doesn’t have empathy for.
I so appreciate how you are talking about this, with such grace and considering the varying aspects. A very wholistic approach, without shaming. Thank you for diving into this!
Isn’t this why we (people who had read the book prior to the production) were all so upset when it was released Blake was playing Lily? We knew this was coming, she is not a serious actress. She laughed the whole way through the movie, in every scene she’s giggling, smirking or just acting as she does in day to day life. I’m just so over seeing and hearing her name.
Also, I’d like to add Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez & Elizabeth Moss never acted so recklessly during the promotion of ‘Sleeping with Enemy,’ ‘Enough’ and ‘The Invisible Man.’ Blake has no excuse for her behavior! As I noticed some people keep saying she’s just an actress. It’s unacceptable behavior.

@@Romy2112 Ryan's attitude fits his roles, Deadpool is sarcastic etc, also Ryan takes shots at himself all the time, and hyper-exaggerates. Plenty of women have this character like Anna Kendrick and Audrey Plaza
@Romy2112 don't agree, when Ryan does PR for his kid movies, he tones his stuff down and knows the temperature of the room. How does Blake decide to promote a movie about DV as if it's the notebook. Even Deadpool would turn toward the camera and say, hun, wear you florals and watch a movie about DV, because DV is such a fun romantic story, right hun?
The first time my ex abused me was while being drunk. He would also often drive under the influence while me and my daughter were in the car with him. The fact that she promoted her own alcoholic line is just wild and outrageous. This is so beyond her and canceling her or the cast or whatsoever, it's the fact that she's so blind about everything she's done wrong and with such blunt insensitivity
She's also teetotal, which makes her alcohol line even stranger to me. I am not sure how I feel about celebrities launching products they would never use themselves. If there's a reason you don't use it or don't want to use it, why launch a branded version of it?
@@werewolfcountry her response to the backlash of launching an alcohol brand while famously not drinking herself was something along the lines of "I'm the ultimate host and love making drinks for other people." I was in an abusive relationship. I got out before it got physical. Actually, I got physical several times to snap him out of the mental and emotional abuse he used to inflict. He would follow me around and never let up until I would lock myself in a room and scream at him and almost broke my foot kicking the door when he stood on the other side. I was afraid of who I was allowing myself to become. I always thought of myself as strong and independent and intelligent. Insidious is EXACTLY the right word. He tried to bring me down and make me insecure in small ways at first that I hardly noticed. When I woke up, I couldn't believe I had allowed it to get as bad as it did. That she wants to make a movie about DV an them promote herself, her businesses, , pretty clothes and accessories, and recommend drinking?? This is appalling. She has no conception of the disrespect she is showing to everyone who has ever survived an abusive relationship.
Reactive abuse I believe is the term used and I've been there too, they pick and pick and pick at a wound/nerve until your fight or flight kicks in and if you can't get away from them in time you snap. Im sending you so much love as someone who has been there before too, took me years to get out of the guilt and shame loop. He's now doing it to the next one. I'm so sorry you went through this, you're not alone ❤️🩹 thank you for sharing
Im so sorry you went through this. Mental abuse is a horrible thing to endure, it never needs to be physical to take a toll or change us. You deserved better.
People who commit abuse are often doing so under the radar and are gradually manipulative, so please remember it is not on you. You did not permit someone to do that. It takes awhile to pick up on. I was in a similar situation, and the moment I woke up and made a safety plan with a professional was rough, but I look back proud that I did it. You are strong, independent, and intelligent. I felt the exact same as you and got gaslit to hell like I needed to calm down and some assholes decided to frame it like this 'I knew it' thing that they somehow never mentioned to me. My dad told me I 'allowed' my abuser to do it, but that could not be further from the truth. It's such as slow drip that to realize what's going on is torment, and becoming reactive is a survival mechanism. We are not to blame for not detecting it before it reaches our conscious radar. Wishing you all the best.
Hi. I'm a first-time watcher, and I want to share that I really like the way that you tell a story. You speak directly to me, the viewer, as if we were conversing face to face in real life. I would describe it as very down-to-earth.
Good job! As a victim of dv I've been so beaten down so much for so long, it has become a life long problem now. This is my favorite video you have made. This feels well thought out. I can tell you put your heart into this. Thank you ❤
I’m so disappointed that BL is so vapid and flippant about it all… stupid retorts and snotty comments when interviewers are asking real questions-this matters for people who suffered DV. What the hell.
i feel like she's copying her husband's style of answering questions. its so ryan reynolds coded but the thing is, he isnt in a movie that focused on DV in most of his funny interviews. there's a time and place to act sarcastic just to be charming. but then again she with how she acted towards other interviewers and that one time calling her costar a monkey...well..
@@farahjichi4617 It’s not about her “insight”… clearly she has none anyway-but when playing a serious character in a serious situation, there should be a level of respect for the real live people who dealt with it. @@farahjichi4617 nobody is looking for insight from her. What is expected is for her to recognize the gravity of the movie's topic and to be RESPECTFUL of it. Clearly she's incapable, so she shouldn't take serious roles if she can't display sensitivity to the struggle of others.
An issue is that Blake’s attitude toward the story and subject matter match the vibe of the book/author and its readership fanbase. A lot of us in the book community don’t really engage with CoHo or her fans because they romanticize abuse. So it’s not even that Blake’s tone throughout all this is “wrong,” because it matches the story that the book thinks it’s telling. That said, it costs nothing to try to be better…unless she fundamentally doesn’t understand the issues and reads the book as a love story, which lots of people do.
Yes, I’m glad you brought this up. Book reviewers have noted that the books promos and description of the book don’t prepare the reader for the nature of the subject matter; instead they portrayed it as a romantic story. A lot of people don’t like this author for exactly that reason.
Watching Kjersti Flaa trying to interview Blake reminded me of my narcissist ex, who always turned every phrase back on me. “Did you cut the teak for the shelves?” “Did *you* cut the teak for the shelves?” Like a petulant child, she takes no responsibility for her behavior, is shallow and self-involved, only wants to talk about clothes and makeup but then gets peevish when Kjersti tries to throw her a softball question about her costumes. She is supposedly promoting her film, but seems put-upon just having to be there. By all means, Blake, if it’s too onerous for you, feel free to step aside so another woman with more talent and empathy and less peroxide and plastic surgery can do the work. Now she’s in a film about a domestic violence victim but hasn’t learned anything about the issue. She does more harm than good by repeating the same victim-blaming narrative and focusing on deeply inappropriate tie-ins with her hair-care line and her alcohol brand. It’s obvious that profit is her priority, not art. Maybe Kiera Knightly could have promoted train travel along with “Anna Karenina.” Perhaps Sandra Hüller missed an opportunity during her “Zone of Interest” junket to be the new celebrity shill for Miele ranges. “Grab your friends and your genocide victims’ fur coats and head out to the cinema tonight!”
She's talking about fashion because she doesn't use a stylist. She chose all her outfits for the press tours, events and even directed her character's wardrobe for the movie. It's either all about her or shutting others down.
Actually she took over the characters wardrobe bc photos from the st were leaked and people said Blake looked frumpy. That word struck a nerve and she brought her Louboutin shoes and pretty clothes to set. This only proves she isn't a real actor. She is just a model that is put in movies and TV shows and she cares more about her looks than her performance. She had a lot of plastic surgery too, she is not naturally beautiful. So shallow.
Oh that part about the cocktails. All the times I was attacked it was when he drank, I was an alcoholic during and after. I'm sober and in a healthy relationship now but my God. This is the worst thing. Selling drinks named after an abuser. Absurd.
Blake once told Bazar magazine she doesn’t drink alcohol because she “don’t like the effects”. This statement plus the World Health Organization stats you drop you can’t help but ask WHY ON EARTH she has a booze brand and why that brand is sponsoring a DV movie. So hypocritical
As a dv surviver and how she has not talked about the real story of the movie and book is very sad and only caring about flowers, clothes, and her products. I have been living with ptsd and short term memory loss from my ex husband trying to unalive me that one night. This was a great opportunity for her to speak up for survivors and victims that didn’t survive from their abusers.
@@StateofKaitAgree. I wondered the same thing but let’s face it…..they worked hard on the movie and they don’t want it to tank. So, their only choice is to try and support her/the movie so that their careers won’t go up in flames like Blake’s will
@@grnddesign While I disagree with how the cast handled it, I have empathy for them. They worked their butts off and none of them have the financial success or power that Blake and Ryan do. If you get blacklisted, it could impact your entire career and certainly cost you an appearance in the sequel.
I guess they had do that because its no easy feat to want to stand against people what have power. I mean it could sabotage their potential future opportunities. BL and RR are quite popular and have a good network. Sad to say its human nature. This PR disaster for Blake was quite unexpected so most times and for a long time the public have always favoured her. The people in the cast would have to take great risk to go against the flow.
Don't usually watch this type of content but i was very impressed with everything. Well presented, explained, tastefully thorough, and you have incredible insights on culture and marketing 👏. Well done
Yes Kate!!!!!!! Thank you! As a DV survivor I love every word of support from you!!! My 11 year old daughter was the one who actually told me how the author is so problematic in how she portrays DV. It is up to all women and Men too! to stand against portraying any DV relationship as romantic. That is the worst description that romantic could have. DV is life crippling and those of us that have been able to escape will carry our trauma forever
I rarely comment on videos and usually tend to fast-forward through most of them, but I’m so glad this one popped up on my feed-I watched every second. I truly appreciate your effort and applaud you for not shying away from steering the conversation in the direction it was meant to go. Your willingness to address the tough topics head-on is both commendable and necessary. I also couldn’t help but notice how you highlighted JB’s mention of resources for DV in his bio, and how you consciously included similar resources in your description. This thoughtful consideration not only shows your deep commitment to the subject but also reflects the care and responsibility you took while discussing it. Your attention to these details speaks volumes about your dedication to making a positive impact. Thank you for using your platform in such a meaningful way.
Great video! I was 100% completely engaged the entire time. I truly love every single one of the videos you make❤ I feel like some celebrity beauty products aren’t bad. Celebrity makeup is a good example. Makeup is frivolous, vain, & fun-which showcases the image of “celebrities” perfectly. Celebrity hair-care is completely neutral to me. It can easily go either way. Though chances are the celebrity brand is going to cost more for absolutely zero reason. Celebrity skincare on the other hand? Absolutely freaking **not**. It’s all TERRIBLE. Never trust a skincare product with a celebrity’s name on it if you care about the health of your skin. I ADORE skincare, & I avoid them like the plague.
honestly, if blake lively had gone with justin baldoni's posters and film cut and everything... i CAN believe that she would've had her "cultural moment" because of how impactful (in the positive sense) and how wide reaching, etc.
@@NatashaEstrada it obviously was a mistake not to given that she's made it clear that her goal was to turn a dv movie into a flowery summer flick rather than take the subject matter seriously
I was invited to go to this movie with friends not knowing what it was a few weeks ago, and I’m so glad I looked up what it was about as someone who went through an abusive marriage. No one even seemed to know what it was about they just knew Blake lively was in it. So so glad I didn’t go
DV is not a joke. I'm offended they are treating it like one. It has been 10 years since I left my abuser and I am still not okay. Thank you for addressing the real issues we have with BL and this entire mess of a movie/book.
This video was very well organized compared to others I've watched on this whole situation. Structured and concise, but also added supplemental commentary from others that articulately supported the points made in this video. I subscribed 😊

23:19 I think I saw a comment on one of the videos you shared pointing out the “how should people approach you” question was most likely the interviewer giving Blake Lively a clear runway to set some boundaries and/or bring up some of the organizations that help DV survivors. So it makes it even worse to me that she got weirdly aggressive with him for asking that question. Just showing a real lack of empathy or understanding.
That particular answer solidified to me, not only that she doesn't care, but that she's also kind of stupid as well. No intelligent person would respond this way and then laugh awkwardly and try to save it with "I'm a virgo so...".
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have always been pretty sus even before they got together. This is unfortunately not remotely surprising behaviour from her (nor Ryan's shady rewrites of the script)
This really was a fantastic video! I'm a DV survivor: I was with my abuser for 12 years. Though he almost tried to kill me, I am so happy to share that I have a remarkable husband now and my miracle baby girl. That being said, I fought harder than most people will understand to heal myself to get here, and it's still a daily battle. The scars from my abuser will be with me forever, no matter how happy or healed I become. Seeing Blake's interviews made my skin boil. It's only shows how it is more important for her to be relatable/likeable (and is trying so obviously hard to convince the audience/consumer that she is) vs. taking opportunities to give a voice to DV and the epidemic of men being excused for abuse while women/partners are blamed for being abused. The deeper thoughts regarding celebrity culture, capitalism themes, and consumerism was so refreshing to hear someone with a platform speaking on. 100 out of 10!
I read the book and just saw the movie. Since I live overseas, I had no idea about the controversy surrounding Blake Lively and her marketing campaigns. But I was uncomfortable with the film itself down-playing the DV. My male friend was confused by the ambiguity of the abuse sequences - I think her acting was too "sunny' and flippant. I sensed a lack of sincerity.
I saw a good point from a DV survivor that the reason the movie was effective was because it was vague. A lot of women on tiktok said it’s easy to look at overt abuse and think “oh that’s not me, that’s not my relationship,” but a lot of women left the film and realized they were in abusive relationships specifically because the movie echoed their experience. I haven’t seen the film but based on what I’ve heard, they didn’t downplay it to be more palatable, but rather to show the insidious nature of abuse and how it can completely creep up on you. I value that perspective.
This video was very well done. Julia Robert’s perspective on her character in “ Sleeping with the Enemy” was so honest and compassionate. I’ve seen that movie but never saw that clip of her interview until now.
Josh did a great job promoting the film and talking about the issues. Blake Lively simply does not have the acting chops to control a movie like it appears her and her husband did.
Thanks for pointing out not just Blake’s lack of awareness, but also Justin’s efforts to do the right thing; I had been aware of what Blake (wasn’t) doing, but have not seen as much about what he was doing.
I never had any issues with Blake but had some doubts about how authentic she is. After seeing so many mean girl moments from her resurfacing and seeing her behavior surrounding 'This ends with us' I have to be team Justin 100%. She still hasn't shown any response and respect to the journalist that she treated horribly. Talking about her 'little bump' which was actually fat shaming and a deeper hurtful comment because the journalist isn't able to have children. I've grown up in a home with DV and it's absolutely horrible and will scar you for life. I can't get behind any of Blake's behavior, like promoting an alcohol brand while alcohol often leads to so much more DV. She's so out of touch! Apparently this type of character was way too much for her. Also, let's not forget she stole Scarlet's husband... Team Justin all the way, he's shown nothing but education, respect and class.
Going to play devil's advocate and say it's kinda sexist to assume that she "stole" someone's husband, as if the husband in question had no autonomy to cheat/leave his wife. There's plenty of reasons to criticize Blake, but she should not be held accountable for her husband's actions.
@megancastle5573 That is absolutely true and I really do get what you're saying however she should have stayed away from a married man. It takes two to tango.
@@StateofKaithi, I love the video but I feel like we should be making more videos about Justin since his response centres more around the actual issues and has a lot of resources. As in the pro response❤
She's always struck me as vapid & ignorant. Petty, but I hope this ruins her. 😅 Not really, but I do agree with you Kait, it would be great if she decides to make a giant donation to a dv cause, at the very least.
Stumbled over this clip/your channel, went somewhere down the rabbit hole about BL - and am pleasantly surprised. Very thoughtful, serious, well researched and referenced. Good work.
she didn t fail anyone, actually she did exactly what you re suppose to learn, you should not worship not put on a pedestial anyone, yet we take ppl as rolemodel is one thing ( you can look at ppl for inspiration) but blindly follow them is another, it denies you!!!!! each time you do so you deny yourself!!!! it s normal it s going back fire yet she is not to blame, you are!!!!
Shame on her!!!! I was an abused by my first boyfriend and my ex husband. This is so sad … I really liked her, but I won’t ever see this movie! I was able to break the silence and talk to friends and family, as to what I was going through.
26:23 I agree with you on that she doesn’t have the right people around her. What kind of team would allow this? I refuse to believe that nobody told her this is not ok. Also, that interview when Blake suggested to share her location…Very aggressive response, but more importantly could have been handled in so many other ways. She could have said to DM her on social media (even if she wouldn’t respond or someone else would reply for her), she could have offered professional help and share some resources/info, or said “let me check with my team how to better organize it”…anything but that. It not only shows that she doesn’t care about her fans but also that she is not willing to help the cause in any way. And that’s more problematic given the fact that she willingly decided to participate in that movie
I think that the fact Blake is best friends Taylor Swift, Taylor’s performative and capitalistic (ahem, white) feminist is…what it is, and this whole calamity is happening are inextricably linked 😂
She really thought she had a grab on us with that hair routine gatekeeping factor... Good hair is mostly due to genetics and hormones. I legit use a solid shampoo bar I buy from a market, and I have thick wavy hair, always had it, I've loose a bit due to vitamin deficiencies but nobody is gonna sell me on that she is doing something special. Besides like you said, her marketing move was sort of shaming her potential consumers, wth with that!
Thorough analysis of Blake’s situation and also of celebrity brands generally. You might have given Blake a bit more credit than she deserves though - I can’t imagine anyone doing a movie about DV and behaving the way she has. But - who knows. The fact that you gave her the benefit of the doubt is one of the reasons why I’ve become a fan of your content.
Thank you! I always try to keep in context that we’re all humans who make mistakes, we have no way of knowing the full picture, and the internet is quick to have a black and white reaction. I don’t ever want to be mean for the sake of being mean.

Hey I’m so proud of you for breaking the cycle.
I'm so sorry you had to deal with that trauma ❤
You’ve been through so much & you were protecting your sister during such a vulnerable age you BOTH were. Also, so proud of you for breaking the DV cycle. You’re a warrior & deserve all the peace in the future. ❤
@@BKME19agreed.
I don’t know you but I’m proud of you. That takes incredible strength ❤
She missed an opportunity to bring so much more awareness and support to IPDV.
you have got to have ZERO common sense or you’re just so narcissistic to make a DV movie and then push yourself ….. just woooow. 💀
Completely agree. My ex was the same way. I felt crazy.
Yeah you could tell she was trying to get a viral clip about how much of a feminist she is. Her whole brand of feminism is performative.
It makes sense she wants that moment being that Scarlett is Ryan’s ex wife
@@NachoAE360Good point, but very few people remember that... And I get the feeling Blake would like to be thought of as a "serious" actress that tackles very deep issues, but just like the promotion for this movie, she's showing that she cannot talk about deep issues. She just comes off very shallow.
@@StateofKait Well, that video got viral. Not for the reasons she wanted to though LOL.
yea it's like she wants to talk ab costumes/ clothes all the time but when someone asks her ab it they are now sexist?? blake, get a grip..
I dont think Blake Lively was right for the role. She wasnt emotionally invested in it. It was all self-interest and self-promotion.
All that plus she's over a decade older than the character in the book 🙈
Plus her acting skills are horrible
Good point! So many other actors would've done the role justice.
ABSOLUTELY.
I was completely unfamiliar with Justin before this movie came out. I really hope he has a long & successful career.
He’s so hunky in Jane the Virgin!
Same here, I really like him and have been moved by how much he seems to care about doing the right thing.
He speaks like Neil Gaiman.
I'm sure men who vocally advocate for women's issues are all true allies.
I agree, coming from an old lady he is nice to look at. Also, something about him genuine
Even if he wasn't genuine, he still promoted the movie in the right way, definitely more professional than Blake
Wait ?! So the movie was supposed to come out in February, around Valentine's Day ? A movie about DV coming out on the day dedicated to lovers ? Well, that's not insensitive at all.
Yuuuuuuuuuup
So creepy.
Can't blame Blake for that
I noticed that too
It wouldn't be the first time. 50 Shades of Gray were also marketed as Valentine's Day movies - although the content is basically a rich abusive and controlling weirdo entrapping an inexperienced and naive intern/virgin.
Thank you for addressing this. My friend died from DV on February 17, 2017. RIP Alicia
I'm so sorry, I can't even imagine. Sending you gentle hugs.
May Alicia rest in peace. 😢
RIP Alicia!❤
RIP Alicia, never forgotten 🖤
IKR?! Her hair looks stressed from decades of bleaching and in every promo pic I see dusty split ends 😑 grl, plz.
He's from Jane The Virgin - one of my favourite shows and I love his character growth❤
Making any Coleen hover book into a movie is utterly bad idea.
I hope he doesn’t sell the rights to the movie so she and her husband can destroy the sequel.
i enjoyed the film a lot. i think it was made well and i appreciate the overall message. it does, however, have a bunch of clichés and the drama around the promotion of the film detracts from the real issue of DV. justin is doing it justice but everyone else has severely dropped the ball.
@stolio223 how is there a sequel? Does she go back? I've only seen the movie
Touché. She’s self-absorbed, flippant and rude. She’s disgusting.
Well said. I agree 100%
Exactly… but if you ask her about fashion, she’ll bite your head off and shame you.
❤❤❤❤
This is why I love Julia Roberts… Sleeping with the Enemy… she got it, she had empathy, and she understood the impact her platform had. Blake… sit down - you didn’t deserve that role and the way you have made a joke of DV is disgusting.
What also stands out is the level of thoughtfulness Julia showed at 23 versus Blake at 37.
...the same Julia Roberts who has been infamously known throughout her career to be one of the most horrible and ego-centric people to just about everyone? THAT Julia Roberts? 🤔
Julia isn’t that girl either. She’s an entitled, insufferable Karen though better veiled than Blake. Both are 🗑️
@@katw.6519 I've never seen and heard Roberts being disrespectful and rude to anyone (unlike B.

The silver lining of this scandal is that the subject of DV is getting more attention. I was shocked to learn from a news interview of a woman running a shelter for battered women that in the state of Texas 1 in 3 women suffer DV! That’s an insanely high stat.
Absolutely, there are positives that have come out of this. I’ve seen quite a few TikToks of women saying they left their partners bc of the film.
She needs a call from Jane Fonda.
I never knew the statistics…. That’s absolutely heartbreaking 💔

Exactly.
Very, very well put
So well said ❤️
I agree with most of what you said, However, Blake volunteering at a domestic abuse shelter ? God forbid.
Well said!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Never been a fan of Blake. Always thought she was non authentic. When she tags along Swift, it gives me mean girl, middle school vibes.
She's always seemed so fake to me too! I guess she reminds me a little too much of my school bully
Same!
Yep! Totally Agree she rubs me the wrong way and now she's coming off just plain obnoxious and dislikable.
She seems like the pretty and spoiled mean girl in school. You know the one who would for whatever reason would get away with being mean. Who used her looks to make people think that she’s nice when she really isn’t.
It was the "dream plantation wedding" for me.
THIS is what aggrevated me the most in this whole video...when the blonde interviewer asked about the costumes for the (Woody Allen) movie and what it was like to be able to wear that era's clothes during the movie, Blake says "everyone just wants to talk about the clothes. I wonder if they ever ask the men about the clothes?"
Blake, the only thing you EVER talk about are clothes!!
YES. THIS. 👏
Interviewer- Congrats on your little bump
Blake- congrats on *your* little bump
Not only did Blake fat shame the interviewee, but the woman was also someone who struggled deeply with infertility.
Blake seems to be clueless or just doesn’t care… disgusting.
I agree, this has been really upsetting to see.
I don't think she's much of a thinker, to be honest. Not because she's incapable, but because she just doesn't really care.

@@FreeSpirit5150 seriously. It’s WILD the way this was being marketed as a whole. Basically everyone except the director majorly missed the mark.
Oh thank you, I appreciate it
I am a survivor of DV and Blake's flippant attitude in her interviews really tick me off.
So sorry for your suffering and the insensitivity of this celebrity. I hope and wish you to get your life, strength and happiness back very soon!
@@ElaAusDemTal Unfortunately you are probably spot on.
Isn’t it ironic that the man in the movie was more emphatic than the womN
My abusive husband also 😢
That was the same straw that broke camels back for me… naming a new drink AFTER THE ABUSER in the film, too!

My stepdad beat the crap out of mom and then me. Sa my younger sister. We lived in fear for 12 years. My sister committed suicide due to the trauma. I am glad someone mentioned her hair is not all that pretty. I also find it "dry looking"
She one of those people that equates long+blonde=beautiful. Healthy hair be damned, I guess. 😒
He hair was very pretty.. about 10 years ago. Now its definitely looking a little dry
Yeah, the irony of a hair care line developed by someone with hair that always looks damaged.
@@berthachavez7911not a little dry, but a super dry
Blake so obviously lacks the empathy required to be a serious actor, and it’s never been more apparent than in her role as a producer on this movie.
Agreed, I think she did so well in Gossip girl because she herself is the out of touch aristocrat she played. It’s a struggle for her to play a very human roll with real human turmoil. Because many of these topics like you said, she doesn’t have empathy for.
Makes sense that she is besties with taytay. Immature. Clueless self absorbed.
Well done! You broke this down so well! Your authenticity is refreshing. You were professional, kind, but also didn’t pull punches. 💪💕
It's par for the course with Colleen Hoover. They are both vapid. Her books are just as tone deaf.

Yes!!! That's the whole reason I don't like her novels at all ( and bc of her flat writing.. At least I dont like it..)
Yes, I’m glad you brought this up. Book reviewers have noted that the books promos and description of the book don’t prepare the reader for the nature of the subject matter; instead they portrayed it as a romantic story. A lot of people don’t like this author for exactly that reason.
Great video, One of the best I have seen on the topic
Watching Kjersti Flaa trying to interview Blake reminded me of my narcissist ex, who always turned every phrase back on me.
“Did you cut the teak for the shelves?”
“Did *you* cut the teak for the shelves?”
Like a petulant child, she takes no responsibility for her behavior, is shallow and self-involved, only wants to talk about clothes and makeup but then gets peevish when Kjersti tries to throw her a softball question about her costumes.
Maybe Kiera Knightly could have promoted train travel along with “Anna Karenina.”
Perhaps Sandra Hüller missed an opportunity during her “Zone of Interest” junket to be the new celebrity shill for Miele ranges. “Grab your friends and your genocide victims’ fur coats and head out to the cinema tonight!”
She is not a serious actress and should not take on serious roles. Definitely cash grab.
She's talking about fashion because she doesn't use a stylist. She chose all her outfits for the press tours, events and even directed her character's wardrobe for the movie. It's either all about her or shutting others down.
Omg, this seems like what Meghan Markle does.
So shallow.
Boo hoo.... normal people dress themselves every day.
If we had her money we'd look like princesses
She could use a stylist, desperately.
Oh that part about the cocktails. All the times I was attacked it was when he drank, I was an alcoholic during and after. I'm sober and in a healthy relationship now but my God. This is the worst thing. Selling drinks named after an abuser. Absurd.

23:19 I think I saw a comment on one of the videos you shared pointing out the “how should people approach you” question was most likely the interviewer giving Blake Lively a clear runway to set some boundaries and/or bring up some of the organizations that help DV survivors. They gave her every chance and she butchered it every time. That interview showed that she clearly doesn’t care about survivors.
I absolutely loved this video. You’re amazing. Please do more of these. ❤
Thank you! Will do!
I wouldnt call Ryan A List. He only ever plays himself; thats not acting.
A list isn't about acting or talent, but their place in Hollywood. He is considered A list.
More narcissism when we need generosity and sincerity.
She seems immature.
@@megancastle5573yeah reynolds to blame there
Tbh i dont trust any male feminist or guy who speaks too loudly about women's issues. Look at Neil Gaiman.
@megancastle5573 That is absolutely true and I really do get what you're saying however she should have stayed away from a married man. It takes two to tango.
@@angelrose7451I agree they’re both at fault. The person they’re cheating with is only not at fault if they’re not aware.
I love the way you analyze the situation, I thought it was fair, no mean girl vibes from you, and I hope you’ll do more of this.
Thank you! Any topics you like me to discuss?
She's trying so hard to be like Ryan. She thinks she's just as funny and on the same level as him.
She’s not. She’s emotionally immature, flippant and self-absorbed. Those poor kids of hers.
He is also a man. The same tactic cant and wont work for a woman
She's above him in Hollywood. She's a nepo baby, born into a family of Hollywood actors

This video is so very well constructed and articulated. You’re a lovely discovery ! New subscriber 🤍
Thank you so much! Lots more pop culture videos to come.
Your commentary videos are a delight to watch! Thanks for all the work and research you did for this video :)
Thank you so much
Agree!!! ❤
Thank you for your wonderful video, you did a good job at highlighting inappropriate behavior without being mean about it.
