@@Lisaghoov I avoid labels like good and bad. There are various reasons why I might not relate to a content creator’s opinion. Beauty, fashion etc. all have age related factors, not to mention body types, skin types etc. My time is valuable so I only watch those influencers that I trust and have things in common. I did watch Marlena’s video yesterday. I appreciate your perspective. I will continue to make my own decisions about who I watch. I didn’t recognize many of the faces in the thumbnail, but a few I did know are ones I quit watching. Integrity will pay off in the long run …always.

@@RapK-fu2sh you’re misinterpreting the point, I have no issues with affiliate links, promo codes, or sponsorships. I do all of them myself! My issue is when ads are not disclosed and take advantage of viewers. As for promo codes and links, I said multiple times that I don’t have a problem with this, but that viewers need to be aware that it’s a sales tactic. It’s supposed to be a video that helps viewers to be more aware so they can take content with a grain of salt.

That was the perfect time for the mom to teach her daughter that you don’t need materialistic things to make you feel good or fit in. There’s always going to be something that other kids have that you don’t. Will the mom go out and buy the new “it” thing each time this happens? When you do that you reinforce to your child that yes, you DO, need these things to fit in. When I was growing up I really wanted a denim two piece outfit (super cool in the early 2000s). My mom did not go out and buy the outfit. Instead, she taught me how to create my own unique style instead of trying to fit in and look like everyone else. It was challenging to deal with as an 8th grader but it taught me to be an independent thinker. And now, I have such amazing style compared to my peers. I’m constantly complemented on my fashion and I owe it to my mom. It’s ok to make your kids uncomfortable, as long as their basic needs are being met. And a stanley cup or my denim outfit, are not basic needs. They’re wants.

I’m in my 30s and I feel the same way, I prefer watching smaller creators that disclose whether something was sent to them and discuss the price point, ingredients etc. I’ve noticed the huge beauty influencers use sensationalism and fake energy to grab attention/views. I’m glad many of us are catching on. I do think the target audience are the teens and college kids that may make impulse purchases.

I think it's also about the environment you have grown up in your life. I'm 34 and never fell for influencers, I have always been very skeptical too. Still, I've grown up with these influencers around, but I think that having a certain way of thinking in my family really helped me to stay away from them, so I think that the family we have plays a big part about how much "gullible" we're gonna be. My parents have always been very strict about buying things (we're poor people, never had money to throw away), and even though I have suffered from it sometimes (I tend to be maybe too much frugal like, sometimes I don't buy even things that are really necessary) at the same time it helped me to not buy things just because and to really think about it

It absolutely grinds my gears when someone is very clearly doing an ad, or was at least gifted products from a brand, but they never verbally state that it's an ad, it's never mentioned in the video, and at the VERY BOTTOM of the description/caption: "brand x kindly provided products/this video was in collaboration with brand x", etc.
Like I have zero issue with people doing sponsorships. But I have major issues with not properly disclosing relationship you have with brands. Imo whenever someone isn't upfront, it instantly discredits any recommendations they give.

I've said this elsewhere, but the system is broken. I've seen influencers receive PR and say things like, "I wanted so badly to like this," "I tried so hard to make this work," "I love the team at this brand, so I feel bad saying something negative about this," "While I don't like this product, I like these other products from this brand." There's an obvious influence on a creator's review if they receive a product for free.

    • @StateofKait
      @StateofKait  5 месяцев назад +4

Definitely, but there's an extra layer that adds context to this. Yes, influencers don't want to sour their relationships with brands, but it also concerns online judgment. We get hate if we aren't overly nice about a product. You'd be surprised by how many people will absolutely flip out if you don't like a product or brand that they like. At the beginning of my channel, SO many people accused me of being a b*tch because I was completely unfiltered in my thoughts. Now, I have more of a "customer service" mindset and I think that's relevant to the conversation too. All of it is at play.

They want to be sent the free stuff, they want the brand trips, they want the sponsorships and brand deals. For not a lot of work, you can get paid thousands upon thousands of dollars for a simple Instagram ad if you are successful enough at social media. Never did she mention a sponsorship or put the flag about a paid sponsorship or even say she partnered with the brand at the start of the video. I looked in the description box and you had to HUNT for it. It was buried in between a bunch of other text that indeed the video was sponsored. I think influencers like to test out if they get more views and hits on their links if they don’t reveal it. Lisa also does reveal it in other videos, but that one she absolutely did not. I also believe she filtered out comments with key words like sponsorship. Lisa is a super “trusted” influencer and if she did that who else does? That was some months ago, but probably was not more than a year ago. She knows full well the requirements. I will not follow her anymore.

Ya, I’ve found her to seem disingenuous as well…I too stopped following her
Having her brushes and videos involved with so many other “creator/friends” made me really feel cringe about her

@@AliseL22aweee Lisa is a very nice person. I met her at a meet and greet in Vegas a few years ago. She is really a good person. I’m simply a follower and she continues to reach out and reply to my stories or simply sending a birthday wish. Sure, she may know how sell things but I feel she’s honest with her reviews.

You’re one of the only influencers who is open minded about k beauty. Often times ingredients are overlooked and they mostly produce clean beauty so I like your non biased take on it 🙆‍♀️

I was so put off the July Amazon prime day from the huge amount of videos I was seeing pop up - it really felt inflated this time. And especially one face spray serum - when I see the same product getting the same talking points and love at the same time I’m like …. really? Think I’m much more cynical of the space now than when I started consuming this content a decade ago

Agreed, the sales were very underwhelming too. Most stuff was 10-20% off max and that was only if you went through the curated pages. I’m not in the US though so that could have contributed.

LOL I just got a YT ad while watching your video talking about how perfect and amazing a particular shirt is and how I need to buy it. While I know ads are shoved in our face constantly, your video is still such a great reminder of the influencer culture we live in and how to be more conscious of it. Well done! 👏🏻

You just earned yourself a new subscriber! LOVED this!! I love makeup and skincare and I really only watch two people on RUclips who I believe honestly LOVE makeup and skincare! One of them being Emily Noel. Just her sheer excitement at trying a new blush excites me! I can’t stand the filters, all the fake things they’ve done. Can’t we just get on here and just get honest reviews?! Thank you for this, well done. I am so glad this came across my feed!

As always, your sincerity and genuine commitment to intellectual honesty and not deceiving or manipulating your audience's trust is shockingly a rarity and a critical fiasco in terms of professionalism, integrity, and also not misleading people who often are desperate for a solution and instead, are being used as a cheap sale. The aspirational and ideal lifestyle aspect resonated truly with me as well - it pulls so much on the heart and the yearning and dissatisfaction, its haunting and garners such a sense of dissatisfaction and bitterness and often leads to financial and mental ruin. Thank you for your efforts and voice regarding this and urging awareness and also a call to quality and dignity in terms of how we consume and for those who view others as a way to profit

I get suspicious any time someone seems too happy about a product but there's no sponsorship tags which sucks bc sometime people do genuinely like things without being paid to say it but there's just so many ads everywhere now that I don't feel like I can trust anyone unless they explicitly say they aren't sponsored

This was excellent! Living in this world AND being critical of it is the only way to do it ethically. This system is so much bigger than any individual and it’s a delicate tightrope of how much to “play the game” cause you can’t change it and how much to set boundaries and not waver, no matter how tempting!
