What's really sad is that the Met Gala is actually for funding historical fashion preservation because the fashion arm of the Met has to get funds each year to keep going. It's relevant work that has historical and cultural importance, as well as celebrating an art form that we all engage with every day, ie. fashion. They've relied on the celebrity angle so people donate, but the problem is that it's become so about that that most people have no idea what it actually funds and many celebrities use it for less than great purposes. It's one of the reasons that Kim wearing the Monroe dress was extremely insulting both artistically and historically.
@maxsommers6843 this was true before social media, prior to social media they had a mythic air to them, but post social media we saw just how mediocre they truly were.
I remember reading an article stating the Kardashians had killed celebrity culture. It took a while but it’s true. We watched a talentless family rise to the top in dubious ways and finally understood that this was the path most “real celebrities” had taken.
I think social media killed celebrity culture. Reasons are 1) it exposes a lot of them because they do a lot of dumb stuff online where as before social media everything was filtered by the media and 2) it created an entire culture of fame hungry influencers that have cheapened the meaning of what it means to be famous because most of them also have no talent just like the Kardashians.
I think the K's just woke a few people up because the sham was so blatant. Many neurodivergent people don't understand the worship of anyone - celebrity, royalty, religious figures etc - it makes absolutely no sense, it's all pretend titles, costume and construct. So we do a lot of observing of human behaviour. I honestly think the celebrity backlash is due to the economic and sociopolitical environment, our loss of hope and fear of the future. If society was to recover it's equilibrium, the worship would be back as well. But that's just a personal opinion.
I really appreciate you not censoring the word “rape”. I think it’s important to reflect the severity of the crimes but I know RUclips isn’t happy about it

Yeah, I never cared for Oprah either, or any celebrities who act so entitled or live in a bubble of privilege. Oprah just seems to espouse some pseudo spirituality or pseudo psychology that lacks depth, is shallow and superficial, and promotes kind of a materialistic, consumerist view of life. There are a few celebrities out there who donate much of their wealth to worthy causes, and volunteer their time, energy and talent to help people, and don't forget where they came from and their fans, and show empathy and concern in various ways toward the working class and those who are struggling. Keanu Reeves comes to mind. And Bruce Springsteen. Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, etc.
Hate to bring in politics, but celebrity culture did a lot to corrode the prestige of Hollywood, which seems to be ignoring bigger problems -- declining audiences, garbage films, rise of streaming & social media. The Democrats made the mistake of relying on celebrity endorsement, unaware that these people were no longer looked up to.
Remember P Diddy and Paris Hilton’s Vote or Die mess? Paris wasn’t even registered to vote that year and P Diddy was Diddying. I was a tween at the time and knew they were on 🤡 time.
Isn't it ironic that we are talking about the public finally not worshipping celebrities. Yet, this election was won by a celebrity that is worshipped by the majority of his following.
It's not even dying. People just went from having parasocial relationships with celebrities to having one with social media. Famous people. We saw that during this election.
There was a time in Hollywood when a celebrity's image was carefully guarded and controlled. The major movie studios had too much investment in them. Now it's like a free for all.
Hollywood stopped making decent movies. There is no substance, no story, no character building, only heavy use of CGI or shock factor which falls flat.
All the good writers and talent got fired or blacklisted for being white and/or having the wrong political opinion. They will keep this attitude well into Hollywoods grave. What rises from that grave is up to us.
I always assumed the fans and the celebrity were mirrors of each other. After all, most people who need fame are already a little off/ needed to distract from their unpleasant reality.
The real irony of John Lennon's "Imagine" song was that the millionaire (in the 1960's!) songwriter made the video in his mansion on his private estate. Total lack of self-awareness.
Well, that's why Mark David Chapman did what he did....thought Lennon was a "phony" and took it a little too extreme. I mean there is protest, and then there is....
i use celebrities for my own entertainment which is the way its supposed to be, never will i be "influenced" by a famous person, i firmly believe there are no ethical billionaires. most of them are probably terrible people who are extremely entitled
Look into Charlie Weaver (Cliff Arquette). He was a good man. We appreciate what he did for Gettysburg years ago. He helped in saving that town's history. It's a shame his grandchildren are such twits. I seriously doubt he'd be happy with them. And Jimmy Durante did so much for children everywhere. He was another good man. I guess that's why you never hear about them anymore.
I don't understand that. People really judge people by the amount of money they have? Like, if someone is rich it doesn't make them bad person or even terrible. You don't know them. It depends on a personality not money. Poor people can be terrible too
@@ΘΘΝΘ-β5ξ You have to ask yourself what a person has to do to even get to that level of wealth. also, the recent documentaries, memoirs, podcasts, etc. highlighting the realities of being a 'child star' really made me question so much about the entertainment industry and celebrity culture - absolutely wild that children were (and probably continue to be) so unprotected in this mess
Oh absolutely. It’s difficult to enjoy entertainment when the curtain has been lifted on the abuse behind the scenes. I hope that this means a better future for child stars now that there’s more transparency, but progress is slow, as we know.
More like stifled. Progress could have begun earlier, perhaps even decades ago, but it has been thwarted at every turn by La-La-Land’s cronies in the legal system, press, mayoral offices, state and federal governments. And this massive influence is only possible because they have deep pockets. What’s more, the extent of it is so entrenched that removing all of it will be no simple task. That’s not to say that there is no hope. The fact that people are waking up to it is a good sign. However, cutting out this rot in its entirety is going to be a long uphill battle.

True, but my understanding is that it's generally not the celebrities themselves who pay the ticket price. They are invited by different fashion brands to display their designs. I think it's important to note that the Met Gala is a charity event. It didn't always involve celebrities, that is a fairly recent development. It's a highly publicized event and the optics around the timing were horrible, but it's not the most egregious example, in my opinion. It's just possibly one of the most mediatized. And while we direct most of our ire toward influencers/celebrities, we pay much less attention to the billionaires who do far greater damage (very few artists have that kind of wealth). The ones that can afford to keep a low profile (while maintaining the same standard of living).
Exactly. War is devastating countless lives, with children struggling to find enough to eat, while these multimillionaires live in luxury and shamelessly flaunt their obscene wealth in public.
Plus, half the designer items are sold at designer prices while being made in a sweatshop in a poor country by workers who work in inhumane conditions and are paid next to nothing. That's how they are getting richer. The higher-ups have stagnated the salary rise for everyone except the CEOs and board members of companies. Buying the charger which comes in a different box, and extra packing, is that not "harming the environment"??? And don't even get me started on planned obsolescence. Shoddy quality garments, gadgets, and even houses, forcing you to be in a cycle of buying constantly. Boycotting consumption culture and celebrity culture is a good start. I remember seeing right through these celebrities as far back as high school. People often made fun of ME because I didn't understand what made them so popular. All I saw was drama, toxicity, greed being praised as what was cool. I chose to be alone because I wanted no part in it. Now today years later now everyone suddenly wants to realize far too late.
Celebrities had admiration back in the day when their images were carefully crafted. Since they now constantly show their real personalities on social media, we have every opportunity to realize that listening to people who are wealthy and famous for no other reason than being good looking, let's be honest, is bat shit insane.
The 'imagine' video was actually so cringe. They literally have the power to do something real, like help people. But you are right, this cringeworthy video was much needed for us regular folks to re-think how we view celerity culture
The dislike of celebrity culture has now reached all across the ideological spectrum. They did it to themselves with their narcissism and arrogance. It’s now affecting the sales of their products (movies, music, branded beauty products, etc).
now it has gotten replaced with some worse folks who aren't worshiping celebrities, but streamers, youtubers and tiktokers have taken the celebrities' places. They are more dangerous than any celebrity.
In a large part you can thank social media for it. The fans wanted to interact with the stars. However the stars decided to tell their fans how to live their lives which has led to a backlash from their fans. The fans didn't like being told you MUST lesson your carbon footprint and lead a very environmentally friendly life even if it means going without a lot. Coming from someone who worked in Hollywood I lost that “awe” that many people have/had for celebrities. I worked with a handful on personal levels and consider some actual friends. But now when I hear many of them voice their opinions (especially about politics), I am repulsed by their arrogance and out of touch attitudes! Just because they give heartfelt performances that moved you doesn’t mean you should take life changing advice from them.
Thinking about P. Diddy and Harvey Weinstein and *everything* they got away with for decades just makes me so angry for the way Winona Ryder was treated for shoplifting. I'm so glad she's had a comeback.
Even as a kid, I thought it was ridiculous how that was a scandal. She stole, paid for the items, and went to treatment. Also, the shoplifting only became a thing after she refused Weinstein. They had that dirt on her and pushed it to the news to ruin her. Besides, it is well documented that kleptomania is a form of trying to feel in control. I don’t doubt she was already dealing with the toxic industry and acted out that way.
It just made me realize that the reason a lot of celebrities were admired, was because they're every wordthat was recleased into the public, was checked in triple checked and carefully crafted, social media was the beginning of the end for celebrities
I beg to differ about the predicted “end of celebrities” as much as I wished it was true. If I remember correctly the majority of a pretty big country just elected a celebrity as their future head of state.

None of it's happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other [stuff] that they say behind everyone’s back."
it's funny that you mention Sydney Sweeny. I watched a video of her months ago from a RUclips-Creator named Scandy that seemed to uncover a lot of her hypocrisy and made her out be the biggest pick me of them all. She seems to lie about a lof of random things and above all wants people to feel like she is the ultimate relateable queen. While I think that's the smartest road to go down right now, its fabricated and not genuine coming from her.
Not sure if he still holds these beliefs, but Kurt Russell said it best: “There's no reason entertainers can't learn just as much as anyone else about a subject, whatever it is. It's genuinely disheartening that Chris Brown has kept on thriving for all these years despite everyone knowing what a terrible person he is and all the abuse he's committed.
About Mila and Ashton. They were telling the judge how great the guy they knew during those years was in hopes of leniency. Isn’t that like saying “yeah, he was hurting other people, but he was still a great guy because he wasn’t mean to us”?
I think Blake Lively behaviour during her press tour was the last straw. It reminded people of how tone deaf and out of touch these celebrities really are. I feel like gwyneth paltrow didn’t get as much backlash and was even praised in her ski court case because it wasn’t exactly the poor vs the rich, but it was a rich white guy vs rich white woman. Celebrities are out of touch with regular life. The fact that they think they can tell us what to do but have a different set of rules for themselves is hilarious. Like lecturing us about climate change from their private planes and mega yachts.
I was actually in the hospital when the Imagine celebrity video came out. I found it interesting that his song conveys the message that adopting a secular, atheistic worldview was more conducive to inner happiness, when modern studies like a 2020 American Psychological Association one concluded that atheists were actually the least likely to report life satisfaction based on their beliefs regarding the nature of the world and their place in it. The study is “Oneness beliefs and their effect on life satisfaction”.
I've learned to place entertainers where they really are: maybe crafting art that amuses me but at the end of the day they are not be to be put on a pedestal or fawned over at the expense of my life, people I actually know and who support and love me, or general reality. They just distract me from the dystopia for a bit. I've met numerous celebrities I like and gradually learned they're human too. (Thankfully most of them were down to earth and chill. That could have also been another marketing tactic.) They just have more money and are well-known. Hollywood and the music industry are no place to idolize given the number of abuse cases and economic inequality you mentioned.

We ALL are
I’ve been sick of them since the mid 90s.
Ricky Gervais was right at the Golden Globes speach.
Social media had a large reason why, we learned they're not remotely special or intelligent.
The problem is they've deluded themselves into thinking they are.
Kardashian are irrelevant in 2024
I think social media killed celebrity culture.
@ Exactly. The Kardashians showed influencers the blueprint.
🙏🏿 🙏🏿 🙏🏿
I think the K's just woke a few people up because the sham was so blatant. Many neurodivergent people don't understand the worship of anyone - celebrity, royalty, religious figures etc - it makes absolutely no sense, it's all pretend titles, costume and construct. So we do a lot of observing of human behaviour.
I honestly think the celebrity backlash is due to the economic and sociopolitical environment, our loss of hope and fear of the future. If society was to recover it's equilibrium, the worship would be back as well. But that's just a personal opinion.

I can enjoy the media they feature in, but why would I be infatuated with them? Why would I not look to better influences or people who've cultivated a true craft?
Athletes are the only celebrities with talent, actual talent
Celebrities are out of touch with regular life. The fact that they think they can tell us what to do but have a different set of rules for themselves is hilarious. Like lecturing us about climate change from their private planes and mega yachts.
I was actually in the hospital when the Imagine celebrity video came out. I was fortunate enough that I wasn’t there for COVID reasons, but I was the floor down from the COVID floor and it was during a time we still knew so little about the nature of the disease. I was bedridden, half my body broken following a nasty fall, watching these celebs in their mansions singing about unity. It was not comforting.
If I was lucky enough to be a celebrity I would be so hush hush like Keanu Reeves or Adam Sandler.
Or Dolly Parton, she refuses any political questions, she said she would never upset her fans like that ❤
Tom Hardy, Christian Bale also
Yes! I have admired Keanu Reeves for a long time - he is just so under the radar. Not all loud, in your face, his life is private which I respect and, when I do come across something about him on the internet, it is something about how he helped someone or did something really kind. That's someone I respect & appreciate. Plus, I really enjoy a lot of his movies. 😊
@@LadyAevarislynAgreed! If you believe working people in the industry, not the ones on red carpets I mean, he’s also not only not an asshole on set, but a generous human being.
Adam Sandler tributing his friend Chris Farley will never not have me in tears. He seems to be a true mensch.
We complain about celebrities but we support their lifestyles by buying their music and movies and products…
What turned me off from celebrity culture was during the MeToo movement when renowned, Oscar winning actor Kevin Spacey was exposed for years of fondling men and young boys. That immediately sent me down a rabbit hole for years to come
What turned me off was that everyone KNEW and did nothing about it....not just Weinstein...but everyone else. While at the same time, people who just asked a girl out, and left when she said 'no' are being crucificed just for trying to get a date. Every movement goes both ways. Remember, "Just like Saturn, the revolution always eats its children."
It’s not aspirational because they don’t buy the things they review or push down our throat. They get gifted Cartier bracelets and Birkin bags while people are living paycheck to paycheck, with cost of living being higher than ever before and the wealth gap widening
and that's just the SWAG bags....
I completely cleaned up my Instagram page by unfollowing every single celebrity because I am so sick of them. So sick of how fake and privileged they are how they think they're above the law and how they want to tell me and all of us who to vote for
Good job 👏 you have earned your right to go straight to heaven!!
I don't care for them because they seem to think they are experts on every subject just because they are celebrities. They have so clearly demonstrated they are not that sharp.
True! That's why I wish people would stop demanding celebrities be political. I don't want to know what they think about the economy because they sure as hell aren't impacted by it like we are.
@@StateofKaityes!!!
To be fair.....most people are like that lol. Most people give their opinions on subjects that they have little knowledge about but believe it is true anyways
@@la6136 My thoughts exactly! We recently saw how every Tom Dick & Sally became immunologists, virologists and epidemiologists while sitting on the loo for 10 minutes, scrolling through internet headlines. Soon after everyone knew everything about international relations (Russia vs Ukraine) and then about Middle-East conflicts. These are just a few examples, every day provides many more. With everyone shouting over one another in the eternal arguments that follow, the voices of the (few) real experts just get drowned out - alas.
You couldn't find a group of people on earth less worthy of worship.
I hold these Hollywood people completely in contempt. My admiration for them at this point has utterly evaporated.
Brilliant video! I agreed especially with what you said about how the oversaturation of social media with celebrity content has made movies less immersive for audience thereby further widening the perceived gap between celebrities and ordinary people. Even the Barbie clip you added signified this to me which sounded so preachy to me when I was watching the movie. Whereas messaging in older movies would resonate more because of the mystery around the actor delivering it.
Yes! It's increasingly difficult to separate the art from the artist.
I've been watching youtube for almost 20 years now and I'm still amazed at how there are so many massive youtube stars will millions and millions of subscribers that I've never even heard of even though I watch this site almost daily.
Exactly, social media careers rarely crossover into real fame
Agreed. Smaller channels with really great content as well that I have to search for because they do not show up..but I see the same old videos come up again and again
@@StateofKait but people still have a very unhealthy relationship with them at this point it might be worse than relationship most had with these celebrity
That did not use to be the case even 7 years ago
Celebrity culture can’t die fast enough. I’ve hated it and frankly never understood it. I’ve been shaking my head since the early 80,s when I was a child, think about that, I recognized it when I was 8, and hated it then
Hopefully, Keanu Reeves is never change and still be humble, appreciative and respectful.
Guy has lost his best friend, River Phoenix who was also Joaquin Phoenix's brother and then his ex wife who was pregnant with his baby at that time and he had to go to a long hiatus. But, he came back as John Wick and still being awesome as he is.
I read somewhere that back in the day, south pacific tribes used to build up their celebrities to worship and then throw them in a volcano. Unfortunately, we seem to have kept only half of the tradition.
I stopped giving 2 shots about what celebrities said or did in my teens when I realized that my life was nothing like theirs. So just because they could pretend really well to care about my wellbeing, it didn’t mean they do. Anyone with an IQ over 5 would never care what they say about anything.
We find out things so much faster because of social media. It's just way harder to sweep things under the rug anymore.
Imagine! How perfect! John Lennon, a wife beater, took a very public pic with Yoko during their "bed in" to protest against The Man, where they're waiting for their maid to clean up, totally blind to how ridiculous and hypocritical that pic would be.
I have been boycotting Hollywood for 10 years. I hope others will join me
I've learned to place entertainers where they really are: maybe crafting art that amuses me but at the end of the day they are not be to be put on a pedestal or fawned over at the expense of my life, people I actually know and who support and love me, or general reality.
I'm glad celebrity culture is dying out and being recognized for what it is.
I stopped caring what celebrities think as soon as I grew up. When I was a kid and a teen? Sure. I loved my favorite band, or actress.
But, as soon as I grew up, I did not care.
Sure, I may enjoy singers, actors, movies, and other forms of entertainment, but that is as FAR as it goes. I do not care what they think or have to say about everyday life.
And I think we are ALL sick and tired of celebrities claiming they are "fleeing the country" if their chosen politician does not win. How self important do you have to be to think ANYONE will care. We don't. If anything, it further goes to prove the point of flaunting their wealth. Everyday people can't just up and move whenever they please 😒. So out of touch, while all the while claiming that they care. Smh
I've NEVER worshipped celebrities, I didn't even have pin-ups growing up in the mid 80's & definitely NEVER understood the crying, screaming & fainting at the mere sight of them😂 I appreciate & admire good musicians, but movie stars & the like, never. Thats why this whole thing is so interesting to me.
Yeah, I've wondered about the "crying, screaming & fainting at the mere sight" of pop stars too. Why hasn't scientific research been done on this????
Because the scientists don't want to waste their time on nonsense?
Good riddance to out-of-touch celebrities!! 🤮
Sorry, but what do these people actually do? Pretending to playing someone else, Singing, or just acting to be the most beautiful. Why did we gave them thia status? We should celebrate people who give to society not narcissistic psychopaths.
I've never had an idol, I've never ever waited in some line or queue to see a so called celebrity. Why would I want to do something like that? It's insane.
Same. Never “followed” a celebrity in a line or a social media platform.
