Great job Carl and Tyler! This was probably the best rendition of your "Good, Better, Best" series. I love hearing from guys that actually work and beat up their clothing and equipment and give their honest, no BS feedback. Keep up the great content!
Great review! Three cheers for Tyler! As a former Army tanker myself it’s always great to see 19K’s out doing great things in the world. Now get that man into some Nick’s Tanker Pros!
As someone who’s worn just about every level, make, and model of boots, there’s something to be said about having a very high quality boot on your feet and not having to think about your feet while on the job site. It’s a sense of security and provides a safer personal environment. You don’t have to go $500+ but I’d suggest considering it or atleast going mid range and steering clear of the epically cheap boots. When you’re new and starting out by all means going cheap in the most desirable option but once you advance in your trade go for the higher USA made options, you’ll have a tougher break in but it’s worthwhile. I will say with Nick’s the break in hasn’t been that bad in my experience.
Awesome video! Thanks Carl. One thing I would say about the Red Wings is that you can get the 10875 (same exact boot as the 875 but with oro original leather instead of oro legacy) for around $285 U.S. It's a great price for a really solid boot. The oro original is a more tan instead of orange leather. But I've found on the job site it deals better with scuffs and stains. Just wanted to throw that out there.
Nice video. It would be cool if you’d do a follow up where the boots were cleaned up, conditioned and eventually resoled. Especially the Redwind and Nicks. Also do you have any recommendations for steel toe boots as my job requires them?
Great video. I work in a warehouse and hear folks complain on the daily about foot pain. Most are wearing cheap sneakers or light duty ST shoes. I rotate through too many pairs of boots, but it makes a big difference in comfort. I prefer stability, support and firmness of a boot and would never want a lightweight, cushy sneaker for this purpose. Your point about the safety aspect of being sharper and focused when you're not thinking about foot pain is spot on though. When you're operating forklifts and other heavy duty equipment, it's super important.
Great video! Interestingly, I really appreciate how you captured Tyler in a high contrast environment (1:35) without totally blowing out the highlights on his bald head! 🤣 Thank you! Keep up your wonderful work!
This is one of your best videos. I appreciate that you did show the boots after being worn. Hopefully, Tyler is cleaning them every so often. Once the Nicks and Redwings are ready for a resole you should do a video with Trenton and Heath. Next project maybe Tyler should test work pants or work jeans. It is great to see these boots in the real world.
I have two pairs of Nicks (Rangers and Hotshots), but turn to my Redwing 10877s this time of year because of the change between snow and mud every other day.
@scottulrich2725 How are the 10877s for comfort on all-day concrete? Every boot I've had, including other models of redwings have the bottoms of my feet feeling like they've been beaten with a broom handle.
I have a pair of Thorogood round toes im retiring because of a tear after 13 years 3 resoles. They last ok as an IBEW Wiremen unless your doing lots of deck work or working on your knees blowing out the toebox. The Whites Perry premium is a sweet spot for normal construction.
Awesome vid and examples Carl! Super helpful to see the wear and opinion. Is a how to brush and care for boots up next for your documentary star?!?! 😉 I’d imagine a light brush every few days and routine care would really make the boots last!
Definitely not going overboard. That’s actually a great point. As someone who often works next to live traffic, I can tell you from experience that focusing on painful boots, or even an injury caused by your boots can make you less safe. Just as much as complacency. That’s actually a good thing to consider when thinking about boot comfort. Hard to imagine a good or bad pair of boots can make the difference between you going home at night or not. But they can.
Whoa, never been this early to the comments. Love the video man, hopefully gonna use to the sway a few more co-workers to the quality side of the boot world. Thanks for putting in all the work for this, really appreciate it.
I work in construction paving asphalt specifically and I’ve now seen a few people with brunts at work and I’m curious to see how long they actually last. I stepped up from the typical mid level redwing $150-$200 ish to thorogoods 1957 moc toe and it’s the first boot that my feet haven’t been sore in I’m going in to my second season with them and will probably re sole next winter.
I enjoyed the video and the comparison of the 3 pairs of boots. I have contemplated buying Brunts before. I have almost purchased Red Wings before. They do have a good reputation which is good. Never heard of Nicks, nice boots though. It was good to see how they all held up and one persons impression of the different ones.
Im about to start a new job been loving wedges but Im needing something for ladders. Timberland Boondocks are what im pretty set on style. The toe, shank, defined heel, water proof capabilitys. Im looking around $200. Anything I should look at Timberland Pro, Wolverine, Ariat Work, Keen, or maybe Danners. I just got burned on some Thorgoods soles lasted 6 months and luckily got them 50% off. I had Skechers last longer.
For the $300 category i always go with danner. Ive had 2 pairs of their quarry boots and love them. The first pair got left on the truck box and i lost then somewhere on a highway
I am on my second pair of chippewa boots. First pair, with cleaning and oiling lasted 4 years. The new boots are not of the same quality. They are coming apart in a little over a year. Didn't care for any of these but thanks for the info.
I'm not in the trades industry and just wear high quality boots because soft and squishy shoes tend to give me plantar fasciitis. I struggled with this a couple of years ago and once I started wearing boots just about every day I found my feet feeling better and better. For someone like me who works in a lab on tile floors all day, I stick to around $300 to $400 and I'm happy...stuff like Red Wing, Grant Stone, Wolverine 1k, etc. They're good enough for me and my purpose. However, if I needed a well built and more durable boot for a more physically demanding job then I'd have no issue spending around $500 for something that will offer the protection and longevity that comes along with it. Admittedly, I've never tried any of the PNW boots. They're probably way too much boot for me. But I can completely understand the need for them in certain types of jobs...just not for a lab geek like myself haha.
The PNW brands make a lot more than just hardcore work boots. They make a lot of beautiful boots that can be worn casually or in an office setting -- but, with the high quality and workmanship of the work boots. Yes, the entry price is high, but they will last forever and be incredibly comfortable after break in.
Where I work I have a steel toe and metatarsal guard requirement unfortunately I can’t wear the internal met guard without it pressing on a nerve in my foot causing all kinds of problems. I bought a cheap pair of wedge sole steel toes and fitted an external metatarsal to them. 10 days in and minimal pain, having seen success here I’ll wear them out and most likely purchase a good quality pair sbd do the same
I got my very first pair of Nicks a few weeks ago and man the break in was brutal, but afterwards they feel phenomenal, the comfort is definitely unmatched, I still have my old pair of Carolinas that I’ve had for 1 year before they fell apart and my feet started hurting so bad I had to bite the bullet and pay over $600 for a custom pair of MTO boots, best $600 I ever spent, am actually looking to get another pair so I can rotate them, thanks for your great videos, your the reason I got a pair of Nicks 🙏
No mention of the painful break-in period with higher end boots? Also, surprised you didn't feature Thorogood. Aren't they really popular on job sites?
Exactly. I have a few pairs of higher-end boots that are just too nice to wear to work, no matter how well built they may be. On the job, I swear by my trusty Thorogoods. Tough as nails, comfortable as a pair of sneakers, and after my first pair was finally ready to be retired after three years of hard daily wear and abuse, I replaced them with another pair of the same 6" steel-toe moc toes from the American Heritage line without hesitation.
I liked that you brought Tyler back in that was pretty cool of you. It was nice to really get a good look at those particular Nicks. What it really is vs what you see online isn't always the same to me anyway. I do wish you would have swapped out those Redwings for Thorogood's. I don't think any boot is better then Nicks, however I do think Thorogood are a better boot then Redwings.
can i suggest you try foreign boots , like for instance france' s Jallate (specificaly jalbarad) they are 160bucks or so i swear they are better work boots than at least the 875
Great video! I love the look of Nick's. Would you consider doing a good better best on crew neck work sweatshirts? I'm having trouble finding ones built for work.
Hi awesome videos by the way curious as to what boot would you recommend for someone who has to do labor work dig(shovel)/concrete work laborer work etc. ?
I bought some Brunt boots about a year and a half ago. I do have to say they were comfortable right out of the box. But they did get worn down pretty easily, especially the heel. I work in a warehouse so I don't need a boot that's super tough or for harsh work conditions. I am looking for a new pair now. Something for hot conditions.
Is there a boot you would recommend for those of us not working construction every day? Maybe using them two days per week for work around the property? Thanks.
Great video though I will say Id be super interested in getting his feed back between the RW 875 and the RW 2440 Traction Tred Lite which is through and through more of a work boot than the 875. good stuff!
A friend of mine asked the question last week. "Anyone have experience with Brunt work boots?" I quickly sent him a couple videos. One being yours. The other one from Rose Anvil. He responded later with Thanks, you probably saved me. I was about to pull the trigger on the Brunt boots. Great video guys!!
This is a great video, and the perspective of a really good apprentice is a terrific idea. I represent Laborers. The problem we have as a trade is that we get a lot of lome, mortar, concrete, and asphalt on our boots. This destroys the upper faster than the sole. Any suggestions on the type of boots that can hold up to that type of work? I have trouble recommending $500 boots to Laborers only for them to find the premium leather has been eaten through by lime and sand.
Wish I watched this before buying the Marin boots. I think I will return them and go back to redwings. I have the burner xp and they have lasted me for a decent time 1 year so far. And man they still got some life left in them. I think I’m going to be getting them resoled after all. Thanks guys for opening my eyes.
Great video, coming from my background Canadian, honestly "narrow" experience. I was lucky enough to stay in one job for most of my career. Im surprised at the amount of "work boots" that dont have safety toe steel / composite. Heck just for a site visit everyone has to have safety toes as a minimum, where ive been. For my personal use boots i custom ordered Steel toe Jim Green AR8's. They are not technically "certified" but im not actually on job sites anymore. 🤷♂️ When polished up you would never know they are steel toe. Anyways thanks again for the videos!! Cheers, beers and whiskey 🤠 🥃
I'd love to see reviews on boots geared toward the guys in the water department in the dpw. Boots that can hold up to being in mud and water for most of the say. I'm talking which mock toe boots can withstand this type of wear and tear. Everyone in my department swear by therogoods but what other brands can hold up.
I love my thorogood moc toe, really comfortable, they can last a long time with being able to be re soled, and for me personally it can have a safety too which is a requirement for my company
what do you guys think about carolinas my last pair were red wings and i like them about a month into the carolinas and i think they are nice just hoping they last
Could you make a review on nicks newer boot the hardwear pro I've been really interested in buying, but it seems like no one has given a detailed review on it. It's basically a more flexible builder pro.
Great video! I wish you would have cleaned the boots before showing the final because they all looked worse than they probably are. Also, the false tongues not being tight in place bothered me as well.
I would trade out the Redwing with Thoroughgood just for the tumbled leather and out of the box break in. Red Wing doesn't get the comfort level. Nicks would be where the break on period happens.
Just watched your nicks video from 3 years ago. How are the builder pros holding up after 5 years ? I've got my eye on a pair of nicks overlanders but dang nearly $600 is a lot of cash
I'll get a pair of comfortable cat boots for £70 they'll last 5-6 months but my foot is the exact measurements that the boot was designed for which is size 9 were if someone is size 11 or 7 for example the measurements become warped and are probably better off getting a custom boot.
Did he go in blind before his wear? Meaning you didn't tell him price etc, so he didn't have any psychological association with more expensive equals better? I am sure when it comes to this particular product its indeed the case especially between theses, but curious if his opinion was influenced knowing how expensive a boot was?
It’s badass but sometimes I got to step in concrete while pouring or just in general concrete dust eats the leather out. That being said Nicks or Whites would be awesome to own in the near future.
Wore keens when I got into my current job (at a shipyard) 5 pairs in 2 years. been wearing nicks BPs for the last 7 months now, they have been awesome. might not even need a resole for another year or so. I wish I could force some coworkers to watch this video, a fer of them wear Hernan Survivors and they get a new pair every couple months, kind of a waste not just for the feet but the environment.
When will Nicks or Whites or any of the other PNW premium brands make a wedge sole moc toe composite safety toe that's waterproof? Until they do that I can't consider their product(s).
Ya I found the same thing when I went from $200 boots to franks boots. I'd waist a set of boots every yr at 200 250 each vs before then I used cheap sub $100 boots that lasted maybe 3 months.
I used to work three years on construction, where we were doing all kind of work. Concrete, digging, masonry, demolition and drywall. I was always wearing German military BW2000 boots that I bought used on ebay in “like new” condition, and they survived all three years. They were comfortable, water resistant, and protected my feet from sparks and all issues. On weekends I used to wear them on hikes and backpacking trips. I seriously don’t understand the desire to pretend that you really need 500+ dollars just for work. Now I have a decent boot collection, from Iron Rangers to White’s. But it is just like a hobby
I haven't tried Nicks yet but I have to different varieties of Whites Perry boots and the Perry's are so good thatI don't feel the need to pay more. I don't care for the fake Mac toe. I might try the JK 300 or forefront next, they don't offer a mic toe but then neither does Nicks, they just punch unnecessary holes and fake stitches into the top of the boot so if I were to buy Nicks I would avoid the "moc" moc toe.
I really want some high quality steel toe boots, but all the best brands make stripper boots for some reason. I don’t need a 3” heel. I need something tough, with very good traction. Working in the oil field these nicks and whites boots are a no-go. Hope they make. Better model soon. Wedge sole don’t work either.
cool that you 2 are in the same job as i.....getting my 25 year pin next month and 15 more before i joined......nicks were the first i bought but my soles fell apart i thing someone did not build them right....despite this they outlasted the thorogoods from before that and the jks i have now are far superior i think because they use better stitching than nicks.....unfortunetaly i feel i wasted my money on the nicks and they will not do anything.....the leather on the nicks is very nice though maybe when i get a big rabbit haul ill have jk rebuild them the uppers are still good.....
It can be tricky, but look for the small strip of leather (sometimes PVC) where the sole meets the upper. That is the actual welt, but some brands will put a fake on there like BRUNT. So it gives the impression that the boot is made with a much higher quality construction technique, though I find that deceptive...
I have to have the absolute hardest sole boots out cuz of the surface I’m on everyday. Highway diamond grinder operator here so ground sharp concrete roadways. If you don’t know what that is, google it. But it’s sharp and unforgiving, rips any wedge boot apart in a few weeks, and if you drag a heel, they’re junk sooner. Best two boots by far in the thousands of dollars work of boots I’ve tested for this job are….Ariat overdrive xtr round toes and timberland pro endurance. Of course u replace the insole with timberlands orange thick famous insole for both boot brands and you’re set. But if u can’t send a staple into the sole you’re good to go. I’ve tried nicks boots and they were sole less in 5 weeks. Sold them. Red wing many types, sold them too. Danner, etc…no wedge boot ever will last. So it’s only a heel boot type of job, Georgia boots makes some really tough industrial soled boots too, but they’re really heavy. A good test I’ve found is if u can u wear them down with a 60 grit flap disc in a few seconds, they’re junk. U can’t with the two I picked and mentioned and I’m in them 12-17 hrs each day as there are never any less than 10hr days in my industry. Nothing stops our work unless it’s machine issues.
Do work boots not need steel toes in america? Pretty much every place that needs safety shoes in Canada requires a safety toe. Most boots on these sites that have steel toes are like logger and linesmans that are 8"+ height with massive heels.
I have a pair of Nicks and a pair of Whites.of the two I much prefer my Nicks to the Whites. Both however are superior to anything else I’ve ever worn and that includes redwings best. I will never buy another cheap pair of boots again.

Thanks.
Great video though I will say Id be super interested in getting his feed back between the RW 875 and the RW 2440 Traction Tred Lite which is through and through more of a work boot than the 875. good stuff!
A friend of mine asked
the question last week. "Anyone have experience with Brunt work boots?" I quickly sent him a couple videos. One being yours. The other one from Rose Anvil. He responded later with Thanks, you probably saved me. I was about to pull the trigger on the Brunt boots. Great video guys!!
Much appreciated dude! Brunt is absolute garbage
Glad you mentioned fatigue impacting safety. I'm not sure there is any data on it, but there should be!
Yeah, I’d love to see some studies on that.
Can we please get the Carl murawski blooper reel?
Hahahaha oh you don’t want that… lots of cussing
Love your channel sir.
Although I have no use for work boots, this was an interesting real world study.
Are there any recommended boots for winter weather and heavy duty mechanical use against oil grease and abrasion
When polished up you would never know they are steel toe.
Anyways thanks again for the videos!!
Cheers,beers and whiskey 🤠 🥃
I'd love to see reviews on boots geared toward the guys in the water department in the dpw. Boots that can hold up to being in mud and water for most of the say. I'm talking which mock toe boots can withstand this type of wear and tear. Everyone in my department swear by therogoods but what other brands can hold up.
I love my thorogood moc toe, really comfortable, they can last a long time with being able to be re soled, and for me personally it can have a safety too which is a requirement for my company
What are the three boots you have pictured on your video clip. They look like Redwings but I cant find them. Can you help? Love your channel
Great video Carl. How I wish this kind of information was available twenty years ago.
I've had a 99$ pair of Wolverines for years. I've put those things thru hell and they've served me great.
Same. $99 Timberland pros for over 3 years now. Its definitely time though.
Any chance you’ll be reviewing a pair of Truman’s double oxblood moc toes ??
what do you guys think about carolinas my last pair were red wings and i like them about a month into the carolinas and i think they are nice just hoping they last
Could you make a review on nicks newer boot the hardwear pro I've been really interested in buying, but it seems like no one has given a detailed review on it. It's basically a more flexible builder pro.
I’m surprised the red wings soles were not worn out. Mine lasted about month. The supersole x is the best red wing boot.
Carl, it would be great to see a review of the Russell Moccasin's boots!
Great video! I wish you would have cleaned the boots before showing the final because they all looked worse than they probably are. Also, the false tongues not being tight in place bothered me as well.
That's a great looking jacket. It looks like it will be fairly water resistant.
Do the moc toe pro trades program come with 1964 or max support leather
I just got my first timberland pro 6 summit on sale for 100$ can’t wait to give them a try
I like that the boots chosen are agile work boots. I love my White's loggers, but they are just too slow for the average work boot.
Yeah man, that's a lot of leather to move around quickly. Its like trying to do a time attack course in a diesel F-350.
I’ll probably just stay with my tried and proven timberland pros 24/7 for about 150$ last about 6 months in residential framing!
Great vid. Not spending $500 on a boot just yet.
RedWings for now. Tradesman at $240.
Some focus on metatarsal's would be great.
Such a great project! Very honest presentation. Tyler is a solid dude 👊🏼💪🏼
Oddly specific
@@Artemis-v8i The style is pretty popular in construction workers. Particularly in thorogood/red wing and unfortunately brunt
Have you ever reviewed thorogoods? Have a pair on their 3rd sole
Does anyone know what the difference between the nicks moc toe pro and the nicks moc toe wedge other than the 360 stitching.
Great job on the video
Thank you very much!
cool that you 2 are in the same job as i.....getting my 25 year pin next month and 15 more before i joined......nicks were the first i bought but my soles fell apart i thing someone did not build them right....despite this they outlasted the thorogoods from before that and the jks i have now are far superior i think because they use better stitching than nicks.....unfortunetaly i feel i wasted my money on the nicks and they will not do anything.....the leather on the nicks is very nice though maybe when i get a big rabbit haul ill have jk rebuild them the uppers are still good.....
In Asia, construction workers just wear flip flops to work 😂
I'm waiting on my nicks to come in, ordered back in September.
How can you tell if theyre goodyear welted?
It can be tricky, but look for the small strip of leather (sometimes PVC) where the sole meets the upper. That is the actual welt, but some brands will put a fake on there like BRUNT. So it gives the impression that the boot is made with a much higher quality construction technique, though I find that deceptive...
What model of the Nicks Boots was he wearing?
IBEW brother!✊🏼
Most companies have shifted away from steel toe here in the states. If safety toe boots are required, they're often composite or even safety aluminum.
Great video!!
What is a great brand for working on a navy ship
I have a pair of Nicks and a pair of Whites.of the two I much prefer my Nicks to the Whites. Both however are superior to anything else I’ve ever worn and that includes redwings best. I will never buy another cheap pair of boots again.
Once you feel quality, it’s hard to go back!
