In this video I show the Dragonfly Wingman Deer Fly & Horsefly Repellent given to me by my daughter for Father's Day www.leevalley.... www.amazon.ca/...
Nova Scotian here! When I ride my mountain bike in the woods my helmet mostly protects me from the horse and deer flies; but they are annoying. When the dragonflies come in it’s like getting fighter jet support. We have LOTS of dragons this year it’s been a treat! 🎉
With things like that, it really does not matter how goofy one may look, bottom line is does it work. So if you determine that it works, goofy looking is perfectly fine and totally worth it. :O)
I will wear two of them if they work...that will look silly for sure but only the flies will see me...maybe they will die laughing. Thanks for commenting Lonnie
Been rolling around with a sticky trap coated white or blue safety helmet when outside mowing/yardwork and you're guaranteed to trap most of the ones that are after you. If you wear a Neck Gaiter/Hunting Buff/scarf any that land on that will invariably land on top of the helmet. It obviously works differently than this device, but it speaks to the lengths people are willing to go to avoid being a blood meal ;)
LOL...actually I have tried duct tape on my hat and a product called Deer Fly Patch. No luck with either. I have a closing review video I will be releasing soon. Thanks for commenting
You mean deerfly, I'm sure. As opposed to "dearfly". Dragonflies are amazing creatures. Late August every year, they come out en masse in North Texas and patrol the back yards. I maintain one aspect of my marksmanship by plinking with my BB gun in my back yard. I can shoot marble-sized objects at 25 yards with ease and entertain myself by shooting flies off my dog's bowl. I say that because I was astonished at the agility of the dragonflies. They can actually dodge a BB coming at them at 600 FPS. They have incredibly fast reactions. They pull up when a BB is coming and drop ack when it is past. I never hit even one, and I was "right-on" hundreds of times. So there is a good reason why deer flies and horseflies are scared to death of a dragonfly. Not only can dragonflies dodge a bullet, but they could also outmaneuver and catch anything they want to eat. There is a good reason why scientists pattern weapons operation after biological systems. Dragonflies - visual, bats - echolocation, dolphins - sonar. The pattern recognition ability of their brains holds the result of millions of years of evolution.
Yes, I see I misspelled the "deer fly" in the on-screen comment. I was amazed the first time I saw thousands of dragonflies hunting over a salt marsh. Bobbing up and down as close as two feet from me and I could not touch them. Cool experience. Thanks for commenting Jim
I have a similar pin that looks like a dragonfly that I wear in my Tilley hat. Like you, I'm not entirely convinced but if it keeps even a few away, I'll take it! Enjoy your trip to NB
I use to walk my dogs by a cemetery and the gnats were always horrible. One day I noticed no gnats, and then I saw the dragonflies. About 10 of them came in the cemetery to eat and while they are there absolutely no pests. So this might work.
I hot glued a ping pong ball to a spring and twisted the spring on to the button on the to of my ball cap, the trick was sticky foot trap stuff smeared on the ping pong ball. the deer flies are attracted to the waggling ball. and they stick there not able to continue there relentless attack. I like the concept behind the dragon fly. Love dragon flies dive bombing for snacks.
Mark Young 😄. I’ve heard about that before actually, not tried it. Friend of ours tells us they have little clip on dragonflys they put on the back of their hats and that it works pretty good.
We have gone to Kouchibouquac every year for the last 25. Because of COVID, this may be the first year we miss. Will be sad if we don't get to go. Thanks for commenting
I’ve always said when I’m in the bush I don’t care what I look like as long as I’m comfortable, & bug free is Comfort. Maybe it’s just the movement, Compare it with something else. As in wrap the dragon fly in a paper towel or 🧻 & see if it still works. I’ve been on many fishing trips when the sky is full of dragon flies, it’s Great and they are your Friends when the bugs are bad.
My goodness I hate them. Does this work in the end mark? I live in NB in the Shediac area, and when my girlfriend and I go out to garden, within seconds they are on me, and they leave her alone. I've bought a full mesh suit for bee keeping and my neighbors think I'm nuts, but I hate how aggressively they swarm my head. Also, love to see locals on RUclips! You've got a subscriber :D
It does work, to a degree. The deer flies still buzz me but I get bit less often. I am planning a follow up video on this and other things to try and stop them from biting. Hope this helps. Wanted to mention we go to Kouchibouquac national Park each year. That is where I really get eaten by the deer flies. Thanks for commenting
They bite because they are attracted to motion from what I know. Bug sprays hide your scent, which works on mosquitoes. But the flies like motion. It’s the females that bite too and not everyone has a reaction to the stuff they inject in us.
Interesting that you say horseflies and deer flies AREN'T attracted to heat as there are many videos that claim they are and promote "manitoba" type traps as a way of catching them using heat (and motion).I haven't had any luck with the manitoba trap yet, but the videos I've watched show them in the traps so it's a conundrum. The only luck I have had is by putting some very sticky duct tape (doubled up) on a baseball cap and catching them that way.Best of Luck!
Found this on deer flies. Also other sources www.dept.psu.edu/nkbiology/naturetrail/speciespages/deerfly.html#:~:text=Once%20a%20female%20deer%20fly,to%20cut%20open%20a%20wound. I always thought duct tape was not worth the effort but I will be using it this year. Thanks for commenting
@@MarkYoungBushcraft Thanks for the info!I happened upon Deer Fly Patches in my recent research for a "cure" which are essentially a double sided tape that you put onto the back of a hat with a REALLY sticky side facing out. They seem to work based on the videos I've watched and aren't expensive, but aren't cheap either if you will be using a lot of them.I have had great luck with basic grey duct tape, but I think mine is super sticky just because it is old and has been out in a shed deteriorating for many years.Take a look at this video....ruclips.net/video/X4gyfTPftgc/видео.html....he had great results using window fly trap tape and it's much less expensive than the patches.Give em hell, they sure give us hell.
A friend of my wife sticks a small branch with some leaves still attached down the back of her collar so it dangles over her head. she swears it helps. I puff backwoods cigars. None of the little bitters like smoke. And every few minutes I stop and kill most of them. Yesterday I must have killed a hundred or more horseflies while reishi hunting.
@@MarkYoungBushcraft That's true. If working outdoors in blackflie season I'll burn a smudge pot and or my fire pit. Anonther thing that works great is spent chaga. While foraging I'll pick dead chagas (if the pack is light) and burn them for smudge. They smell great too.
deer flys are the worst i recently learned they are attracted to blue. With that said if you put a blue solo cup with sticky tangle foot on top of your hat they will get on it and wont come off.
If it works I would use it. I did try the super sticky tape on my hat. Did not work for me. I would sooner repel them than trap them. Thanks for commenting
@@MarkYoungBushcraft Tanglefoot works way better than tape it's much stickier. Trapping works better in my opinion because you're killing them. Never to be bothered by the dead ones again.
It would be somewhat subjective as opposed to objective but if I start off by being attacked, then put the dragonfly on and the attacks stop... I am good with that. Thanks for commenting
You can watch my long-term use review here ruclips.net/video/qCocKuQsdo0/видео.html
Let's assume this works partially. Then can you imagine just how much more effective would be an entire dragonfly costume?
That would fun🤔. Thanks for commenting
@@MarkYoungBushcraft so what is your overall review?
@@crazynaska Check this video ruclips.net/video/qCocKuQsdo0/видео.html
Ha, it would probably repel women as well though.
I'm like you a total magnet for the deer flies. I absolutely hate going outdoors when they start. They come right at my face and get around my eyes.
Oh man. I feel you pain. They have not started here yet but will be out soon. Thanks for commenting

If it works I would make a double shoulder mount for both sides . 2 team Wing-man and that should do the trick! Down here the flies go for the face!
I have considered exactly that. If it works I may do it. Thanks for commenting
