Painting with Egg Tempera - monochrome barn window study

- Hi there and welcome to this video where I am painting a monochrome study of a barn window using Egg Tempera paints. I also introduce some silverpoint drawing later in the study.
This was great fun and I learnt so much about how the paint handles. I will certainly do more egg tempera work as I absolutely loved creating the different layers of paint and using the lifting off techniques.
I used Sennelier egg tempera black and white paint in tubes.
My paper was Arches hot pressed that was glued to plywood and gessoed with my homemade recipe.
Metalpoint was a 'Zecchi : Lead-Tin Stylus for Drawing : 8mm diameter'
I also used a genuine Zecchi 2mm silverpoint for some smaller details which wasn't included in the video.
Thanks for watching - bye for now
Andrew

As always......love the video again. Wonderful subject to draw. Love your way of layering. Love the monochrome drawings you made in past years. Tempera is for me a long time ago...Really admire your art and the book I look into it almost every day. Inspiring sruff! Greetings to you!
Thank you so much Jan 😀
So, so good 😍. I could watch you paint for hours - oh, hang on…I do 😊. Thanks so much for posting. It must take a lot of time and effort. Very much appreciated though.

Such a lovely video so well filmed and absolutely stunning work, thankyou Andrew
Thank you very much Anita
To me, they are the PERFECT medium. Especially for plein air. Thanks for the video, there are not many egg tempera videos on yt
Thank you very much. I really enjoyed using egg tempera

Hi Andrew another very inspiring video. Called in at the gallery at Rowsley the other day I only live about 40 minutes away to take a look at your paintings they looked great it's the first time I have been able to see your work live, keep up the good work 🙂
Hi Keith, that's brilliant. Thanks so much for taking a look at the exhibition. All the best - Andrew
Hey Andrew I really like how this turned out.. Iv never tried egg tempra so I may just give it a try soon 😊 anyway great video great art all the best 😊👍
Hi Johnny - it's a beautiful medium to use but will take some time to master. I have only just begun to scratch the surface
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt thanks for the info mate… I’m sure it will take some mastering… I will give it a go anyway… hope your well buddy 😊
Very clever. Inspired me to think about some black & white style artworks. Love this style, brilliant job.
Thank you very much
Very interesting video again! I had to Google what silverpoint was as I have never heard of the term.
Glad you liked it Cindy. I've always liked the idea of trying silverpoint drawing. The old masters (a long time ago) used it
Ce n'est pas qu'un tableau
C'est une chasson d'amour ❤
Merci beaucoup 😃
Hello Andrew. This is a beautifully filmed demo…and the music was awesome.
I am dipping my toe into egg tempera. I bought Sennelier tempera too. Do you absolutely have to gesso the paper for maximum effect ?
Thank you very much Francis
I originally gessoed the paper to try silverpoint but it also came in handy for egg tempera. I would Google the best way to work with this paint to get the best out of it 👍🏻
Hi Andrew - Really enjoyed watching this beautiful artwork develop. Your barn windows are always just exquisite. Loved this video as well as it’s beautifully crafted and the music is perfect. This video a work of art in and of itself!
@@lisakunish936 thank you so much Lisa. I really appreciate your kind comments
Belíssimo
Thank you 😃
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt no probs 👍 🙃
What surface are you working on mate?
Hi there - this is gessoed plywood
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt thank you
Great demo of egg tempura. So it reactivates when you add water I.e. it’s reactivating when you lift it out after it’s dried?
Thank you Roger
it does seem to reactivate (lift off) when dry but it is easier to control then. I love it - so far!
Though it lifts off in the short run, in six months time it is more permanent than oils. I tell people that is like leaving your egg yoke on the plate for several days and it is difficult to remove.
Andrew this was probably your best video yet and I am a big fan! I would love to see more of this.
@@judithslawter372 Thank you very much Judith
@@judithslawter372 that makes sense now. I would like to try making my own sometime
