- There is new research from the journal Environmental Science and Technology that is raising concerns about toxic chemicals coming from the seats inside of cars. Most seats are treated with flame-retardant chemicals because of a federal fire safety standard. The new study found those chemicals in the air inside of cars, which means drivers or passengers could be inhaling them.

Remember getting excited about the new car smell?
Lol
yeah and we all survived with no issues
@@alexanderkennedy2969 I highly doubt it. Cancer rates are higher than ever. There is nothing good to chronic exposure to any fume. Plastic is plastic.
@@raulacevedo-esteves9493 okay but its all over the place. they cherry pick certain things they want to regulate and control, and ignore other things that they make money on. what about all the plastic we eat food and drink out of? what about cell phones? the list goes on
That fabulous formaldehyde vapor from the vinyl & plastics. Yum. So good.
Nothing new or surprising to me. Aside car seats…..glues, plastics, carpets and paints will give off fumes inside the car as well. The problem is that a lot of these chemicals are not well regulated.
Government is just getting " getting out of the way"... isn't that what conservatives have wanted for decades?
Precisely, but we are getting normalized to being exposed to nasty chemicals. We live with PELs, that is the new normal. In reality nothing should be permisible, but we accept it to have nice things.
@@Callsign_Sturm the feds are responsible for power seats, power windows, power locks, touchscreens, heated seats, heated steering wheels, climate control? No they're not.... that's short sighted people who complain about how cars don't last when 5hat stuff breaks.
@@Callsign_Sturm today's engines last just as long as the old ones with better horsepower and better gas mileage. Junkyards AR loaded full of classic cars that barely have 100k miles.
Don't forget lubricants. Every moving part is lubricated from the factory.
Toxic chemicals are everywhere bruh 😭
flame retardants also still burn, itsn't it weird?
@@eewilson9835 its suppose to be resistant not proof.
Wait until you get diagnosed in the clinic with cancer
@@imrytebeehyneu just grow old, its a matter of living long enough.
@@eewilson9835
IF you live long enough...
Brace yourself, the smell from new carpets and paint in your home isn't healthy either.
Paint is usually gonna be largely VOCs, solvents and such. Thats known to be bad, its why painters wear respirators.
What did y'all think the "new car smell" was?
Thankful to have an old used car!
I have old stale car smell with a hint of leaking heater core mixed in. Delicious.
@@luigi55125😅 You might want to get that fixed though, as you don't want the engine to run out of coolant.
@@mjblue84 I have a 26yo Honda I bought from the second owner. It still has that new car smell the first time I drive after I leave it sitting for a few days.
Not a physician but I am a retired auto technician. It is very important when the cars interior is hot that you roll the windows down immediately. I used to work on new cars all the time and the smells were making me sick!! Rolling the windows down also helps cool down the interior faster and save on running the A/C as much. Also never run the recirculating air button…always use fresh air.
I was an automotive pre-production quality engineer and we had a specific test called the “Smell- Glass Fog Test” a test sample of the plastic was placed in heated water with a glass plate on the top, if the deposition rate on the glass exceeded a certain amount over a set period of time, the plastic batch was rejected.
So should we panic or nah...
it's everywhere , in our air ,food, water...smh
I don’t like new car smell, makes me nauseous. So exposure to flame retardants by inhaling can increase our risk for cancer ?? I’m worried.
I never liked new car smell either. I don't usually get carsick anymore, but I've noticed that it's always a newer model vehixle whenever I did. Never had any issues getting nauseous in an old car.
Where's the class action lawsuit?
First, a study will have to be done linking people getting cancer to this. Give it ten years.
Oh don't worry, it's coming!
The clothes you ware the Tupperware and all plastics release chemicals
What do people think that new car smell is? It's the off gassing of all the rubber and plastic inside the car and although most people like the smell it is actually toxic.
i’ve never understood how people think it smells good
My vehicles are 20 years old. I presume the outgassing is greater when the car is newer, but is there a lessening over time? (Another reason to buy a used car instead of new?)
More complexities in cars is doing more damage than good. Bring back the stripped down simple economy car without all the complexities
Your comment applies to more than just cars. The same could be said for many things nowadays.
They used to use toxic wallpaper.
I was looking over types of flame retardant and fire retardant and all that I saw were highly toxic.
Should test a van conversion in the middle of summer! That thing is "off gassing" for pretty much the lifetime of the van. You get to pay big bucks to huff gas!
@@Callsign_Sturm Yes, if you can build and have the time, knowledge, shop, tools then do it! Just like a home cooked meal; you know what you're cooking with!
Chemicals everywhere
Chemicals in cars!? No way!! 😮
Nothing like a little fear mongering.
I’m so glad I have an older Lexus with real leather and wood. Another reason for me not to buy a newer car.
Real leather is treated with bad chemicals unless beeswax was used
Probably most of the flame retardant is in the foam cushion, not the upholstery.
Did the article state that leather seats aren’t treated with flame retardant?
Who’s going to tell them 😂
Only Bentley’s and the likes come with real wood today.
Imagine when people realize those toxic fire retardant chemicals are in their mattresses that they sleep on for a third of their lives..
I was looking for this comment. Thanks California for keeping us safe.
3rd generation prius is an "electric" car now
everthing is toxic nowadays
My car seat is toxic from all of my farts
Where's my bike
Mazda & many RVs had this issue years ago Formaldehyde CH20
People are practically living in there cars not just driving them
I've always liked my windows down. I guess now I know why...
I only eat natural food for past decade and whenever I smell artificial perfume of fumes from synthetic products I get extreme headaches. Most people don't know how much damage they're doing to their body when you lose your natural immunity from toxic food intake.
I love how they mention “EVs”, as though that has anything to do with these chemicals. There seems to be a relentless campaign to bash EVs.
Wow ! Are we really surprised... ? everything contains chemicals: from home furniture, paint, plastic packaging of many products to hair dyes, cosmetics, eye lashes.
There is a real price for using chemicals everywhere 🌎
There are definitely toxic chemicals coming from my seat! I usually just roll the window down and they’re gone after a few minutes.
Great they are finding this
That's NOT an electic car!
if you think that’s bad definitely don’t Inhale the hot smoke coming out your muffler.
If you want to know how much chemical outgassing you get from the interior of a new car, just keep count of how many times you have to clean the chemical fog from the inside of the windows, particular in hot weather. It will probably be a dozen cleanings before it lets up. Now realize that your skin and lungs get the same deposits.
When you get into a hot car, wear a mask until you open the windows. Wait for a few minutes until the hot smell dies down
Why do you think that “new car smell” comes back on a hot day sometimes
New cars get haze build up on the inside of the windshield. What do you think it is? WHEN THE CHEMICALS IN THE NEW CAR GAS-OFF IT CONDENSES ON THE WINDSHIELD. OH AND IN OUR LUNGS TOO,😅
Every 10 or so years this is an emergency. It’s not new.
MIGHT be breathing them in??? Just what did you think that 'new car smell' always was? Car manufacturers don't use perfume.
A PRIUS IS NOT AN ELECTION CAR!
She wasn't driving an electric car. She was driving a car with a combustion engine
Prius is not an electric car and in the good old days we had leather seats now we get plastic seats.
I’ll stick with my old Chevy, I know I will have it for years if not decades.
bro some people be sniffin gas fuel😂
So me airing out my cars all the time isn't wasting my time. They get a bit dusty from pollen inside, but I do like to air out my cars for a day a week.
Between this and the dangerous gases that I emit when I'm in my car I'm surprised I'm still alive
I wonder how long these smells last? Stay curious...
The 2 times i bought a new car I had to let the cars sit in front of my house with the windows down for a couple of days before i could drive them.
The new car smell makes me nauseous and get an instant migraine
yup, I get sick easily when getting in new cars.
Not chemicals causing problems 😱
if it is a older car is it better
Interesting how many regulations are on cars and this just slips on past everyone.
Tell me about the chemicals in our food.....
With no rain water safe to drink anywhere on Earth this is what they're worried about because there's money in it
they put flame retardants in the cars, which still burn anyway
I kid you not I asked this question about 16yrs ago okay wow I feel old anywho... I was told "that's not a thing". My thought was if it's hot isn't the chemicals being leeched into the air in the car? Funny how they looking into it now
Its always something these days
Throw the whole country away....
Most kids stuff like play tents, tunnels, some cloth chairs, etc. contain flame retardants too. Stuff is everywhere. Anyone use those car air fresheners? Those are great for your lungs.
And now we know why non smokers still get lung cancer !!
So, they made this video to tell us about the chemical but not about the car makers that use them? I smell bull 😑
Heller, 95 % of things are petroleum based..
Imagine when they do a research on radiation that EV gives to people 😭
Toxic zombies 🧟
This research could have been done like 20 years ago.
its been known
That lady is Indian. I would like to love on her.❤
surely the Ev cars must be more than toxic the plastic fumes
What next !
Better than the old stuff the ate away your bones and caused osteoporosis :/
Everything they make is messed up, just go back to using natural materials.
New car smell, new home smell et al off gassing. Children and baby clothes with fire retardant. Micro plastic in the air and our blood. Yippy!
We've only known that new car smell are petrochemical carcinogens for decades. Where you've been, CBS? LOL
"Drives an electric car to help the environment"...how about child slavery in the cobalt mines?
another toyota scandal in the making
to be fair - need a study on before, during and after farting - before and after letting down the window
Ok …. I will see myself out 🚪⬅️🚶🏻
I appreciate this information thank you. AND please don't interview, showcase, people with vocal fry. Vocal fry is a preventable disease found most commonly among the Millennial generation however it can afflict anyone careless enough to let it take root. Those with vocal fry must work to instill new vocaluzation habits to eliminate the fry. Notice the clear smooth timbre of the journalist's voice vs the car owner. Thank you.
👃🏽…ahh yes… that new car smell….
Yea, I’ve realized a while back, all these lovely smells we enjoy, are all carcinogens! You know that wonderful freshly washed laundry scent…. that’s all chemicals being inhaled.
No, I’m not switching to all natural fragrance free detergent.
Yikes! The seats in my car have roc chemicals: the world is basically at war, AI targets people to unalive for war & Wendy’s has dynamic pricing depending on the time of day. lol. Maybe man give me the flip phone again. Things are wayyy too complicated today.
Can i sue? I am a salesman at a dealership for many years. I can just imagine how much carcinogens i am intaking. We have to get together and see the damages
Let's go back to raw hide
Hyundai Seats are made with Soybeans.
you guys never stop with the fake news
I mean this isnt totally new, we've all known for a while now that the "new car smell" is just all the glues, plastics, and paints off gassing. Not good to breath in but such a nice smell.
These are observational studies which means they didn't find any causal link b/w the chemical and cancer. Also, these studies are always about raising your risk for a specific disease. But this doesn't mean you will get the disease by that percentage. For instance, let's say being exposed to something increases your risk of developing a disease by 30%. This doesn't mean you have a 30% greater chance of developing that disease. It means if your risk, which is a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors, of getting that disease is 25% then the exposure will bump up that risk from 25% to 33%. In short, genetics are out of your control. But what is in your control is lifestyle factors. Obesity is the #1 cancer causing lifestyle factor today exceeding smoking and alcohol. Start eating right, exercising, and don't pay too much attention to these observational studies....
Thank you. People always freak out about these things without knowing much about studies. EWG comes to mind as they are notorious for bad/alarmist/causational/skewed studies and the media eats them up. Flame retardants are on mattresses, furniture, etc. However, I do think they should reassess the chemicals used for this in cars like they did for the items mentioned above. I know cancer is scary for a lot of people, but you are more likely to die from injury and violence than any other cause, including cancer, regardless of age, race, or economic status (source CDC). But as you said, your best bet for health is to maintain a healthy weight, exercise, eat well (watch sodium intake, try to avoid added sugars...I know this can be difficult, which is why I say "try"), don't smoke/drink (this is why in most states have an excise/vice tax for these items and keep raising them as a deterrent)
Gotta I love that new car smell ...?
even if it kills you😮
Is it from too many Taco Bell meals that they shouldn't be eating?
This is why cars are getting expensive .. Like has that ever killed someone .. Gosh they don’t want us to drive cars anymore ..
People need to stay home
I will be the first to admit it, i myself put chemicals into my vehicle willingly. Coolant, motor oil, all kinds of fluids. Carwash fluids, wax, shine.... The list goes on, dont forget the 🌲 freshener with that new car smell. 👍
Electric cars
stop. please just stop. 😮💨
....this may well be the dumbest reporting ever done ~
Toxic chemicals are nothing but farts with the windows up.
Does beer urine neutralize the toxic chemicals, asking for a friend?
Comical at the least.
