Ironically, any “calming” breathing techniques that involve holding my breath make me more anxious. It’s not like I think I’m going to die in those 4 seconds, but it aggravates whatever anxiety is already there and it just builds. I can absolutely see how this would work for a lot of people for all the reasons you stated; it’s structured, gives you things to focus on in several different ways, etc… appreciate I just have an abnormal reaction to it. My therapist says she does come across this occasionally (so I’m not the only weirdo in the world, lol) so we just focus on doing really deep breaths and not the numbers or holding. I find that, after a couple good breaths, I start to hold a little bit between the in and out naturally, so I guess I’m still doing the same kind of thing, in a mini version, just getting there in a different way. Isn’t it funny how everyone is so different? I know tons of people who swear by this technique and I’m so glad it works for you all! 😊

I actually struggle to hold for four as well...I usually hold for two or less!!! I get anxious any longer, so I'm trying to push myself. There is no "normal" here... we're all just trying to do our best to survive! 🥰

@@ChronicallyBeautifILL Well I guess it’s not just me, haha! Maybe it’s just something I need to work up to. We are all indeed doing our best 😊
